I love the friendly staff. They offer you many choices to sample the soups. Greek lemon chicken is my most favorite. I have also has the buffalo chicken soup! And chicken noodle. All of them are delicious. Turkey Reuben was awesome! Not a big fan of the bread roll that comes with the soup. But I will eat a few bites. Glad that they are on James Island!!!! One complaint is that the soup is sometimes not very hot when served to you. I would expect my soup to be pretty warm ... Not scalding but warm. I wish I could give this place lesser stars. I was expecting much more more from what people have told me. It did not measure up and that's the short of it and here's why. We got 4 different soups and were so excited bc we saw so many rave reviews. We got the baked potato soup, the she crab soup - a charleston staple, turkey chili, and tomato soup. All of these were awful. There was so much sugar and flower you could taste it in all the soups. I was frankly embarrassed to serve this to my friends on Sunday. It was definitely below average, and I will not come to this place again. Maybe they had an off day, but I sincerely doubt it if it was 4 soups that weren't up to par. Yummy soup, good sandwiches. But UNDER STAFFED! Every time I'm here the staff is scrambling and stressed, telling customers they're short staffed. Love this place for lunch! It's not exactly cheap, but it is really tasty. My favorites are the herbed cream cheese + veggie sandwich with Greek lemon chicken soup. I've also had the broccoli cheese, She crab, and chili soups, and a couple of grilled cheeses. Healthy portions, and they have a drive thru! First of all let me say the food is ALWAYS delicious here. I enjoy the soup at every location, but I will not be returning to this location for the following reasons. The older lady who has taken my order every time is one of the rudest people I've ever dealt with in the food industry. She speaks to you as though you are inconveniencing her in every way. This should not be the case. On top of that, the lady continuously coughed into her open hand which is not what anyone wants to see before being served their soup. I saw several comments from other Yelp friends that made me remember I had a groupon and decided to give it a try. I live near it and did not even realize it was there. But I have to say, I went, I tried it, and wow, really impressive, especially the friendly service. Really appreciated the lady who insisted we try as much as we wanted. We tried 6 different soups. Our Groupon gave us half sandwich, 12 ounce bowl of soup, and a drink so they got no money(except tip) and they still treated us great. I saw a post by Scotty who said they just started giving bread with their soups and that is good but not great bread. I concur. But since I got the sandwich I did not need the bread. And the sandwich bread was fantastic. Texas toast type, just melted in my mouth. Our server took great pride in suggesting different sandwiches depending on the soup. I got the Turkey bacon Griller with Bean soup with Ham! Outstanding and filling. My wife got the Ladles Grilled Cheese with the special Vegetable soup and it was equally fantastic. So, give it a try. Easily the worst customer service I'vehad on JI. I had my dog with me so I went to drive thru. Older lady came to the window and told me it would be 20 minutes for a pimento cheese sandwich because there were 10 order ahead of me. Then proceeded to tell me I should not order at the drive thru because they don't advertise it for that. It's for call ahead pick up orders. Once I told her I called 3 times and kept getting an answering machine she said "I told you, we are busy!!" I can't imagine how you are so busy while being so rude. Consider yourself a little less busy because I won't ever be back. (The food is marginal at best) You got one star because this app won't let me do zero stars. read more

The SO and I are soup FIENDS! A perfect lunch for us is a cup of soup - hot or cold - and a salad. This place is the spot! They have TONS of soup to choose from each day and have plenty of soups and sandwiches to pair with them. We got the tomato gazpacho and Greek lemon orzo with chicken. Delish! We live out of town and I am kicking myself for not getting a quart of each to take home. We did soup and salad and it was so much that we both took home leftovers. I generally enjoy the food at Ladles on Kiawah, but was disappointed with my first trip to the James Island branch. My boyfriend and I had decided to pickup a late lunch on Sunday afternoon. We came just after a lunch rush, and waited for some time at the counter before being invited to order. The quality of our sandwiches were fresh and good, but they forgot to add the bacon we requested for my boyfriends egg salad sandwich. My Von baren ladles sandwich came as ordered, but I was most disappointed with the tomato soup. It had been significantly watered down and was lukewarm upon delivery. I will say the atmosphere of the James Island branch felt more cozy, but I would hesitate to return for a future meal. By comparison, the Kiawah ladles offers a better food product. read more

I ate here for lunch one day with my Wife and my parents while on vacation in Folly Beach. I have to say I was disappointed in the soup. I had the Gumbo (it was a special) and a half a sandwich. The Gumbo lacked any flavor what so ever and the sandwich was ok. My wife got the vegetable soup and felt that it had no flavor as well. She felt that it tasted like a canned soup. My parents liked their soup so maybe my wife and I ordered wrong, but I probably will not be going back to find out. read more

I went to ladles this afternoon to pick up soup for the family because we are all sick. I orderedloaded potatoe, she crab and buffalo chicken. My husband liked the buffalo chicken it had a nice texture and kick to it. The potatoe was gelatinous and did not taste good we couldnt eat it. The she crab soup was also gelatinous and had a spicy kick that Im not accustomed to in she crab soup. Definitely the worst She Crab soup in Charleston! read more

I'm in love with this Ladles location. Not only is the food awesome every time but the staff is what really makes this place extra pleasant! They always remember my name and my usual order when I come in, really feels like seein family when I walk in (the kind of family you enjoy seeing, like grandma or that one crazy aunt you only see at Thanksgiving, not your in-laws haha). I dine in or grab to-go a few times a week from here. Soups are always fresh and the specials are unique. On my latest visit I ordered the special, which was a jalapeño cheddar cream cheese griller, which I added bacon to along with a side of fresh tomato basil soup. The meal was spectacular and to see how happy the staff is to be there as well really just makes my day. I came back later that evening and ordered the same special to-go so I could enjoy it at home, it was that delicious! I highly recommend this Ladles location. Every time I've been here I've had a great experience. The sandwiches and soups I've tried are delicious and a steal for what they charge.

I'm going to preface this with the fact that I am eating a yummy bowl of turkey chili. The food at Ladles is good; the service is absolutely horrible. I went to ladles for a quick to-go lunch at about 12:20 today, and at 1:10 still did not have the bowl of soup and club sandwich (note: not a complicated order) I ordered. I understand being busy and slow on days when the restaurant is crowded, but 4 people that came in after me were served before me. This is the second time in a row that this exact situation has occurred. Plain and simple, the staff is incapable of performing when there are more than 4 customers in the restaurant. read more

Arrived at 12:20 and stood at the counter for more than 10 minutes and never got to place our order. There was no line; we were the only customers at the counter. Finally, the lady behind the counter acknowledged us, but said only that she would be with us shortly. After watching her amble around and do nothing for a couple of more minutes we left. We decided to stop here for lunch and immediately Jah and Logan struck up friendly conversation and made some excellent suggestions. I ordered the turkey bacon griller and buffalo chicken soup and my expectations were far exceeded. The soup was by far the best that I've ever had! After eating, we spoke to Jah and Logan once more to let them know just how much we enjoyed our food and experience and mentioned that we'd be back before we left and they even gave us a coupon for our next visit. Okay, so I tried Ladles for the first time last summer and I really loved it. Soup and sandwiches is one of my favorite things. I have always been pleased with the Tomato Basil soup and the Ruben. It's hard for me to not order it. The service is usually okay but I have been turned off from going back since the last time. The person at the register was not very professional, had her friends hanging out around the store and they were constantly snickering and trying to get her attention. It drove me crazy. It took way too long for us to get our meal and she got our order wrong when it came. I think it was because she was more focused on her friends than the customers. I really didn't appreciate it... but that was one bad apple. Regardless, excellent food. read more

Food was good, the service was beyond comical. At one point we thought that we were on candid camera because the actions of the staff was that unbelievable. We arrived at ladles on a cold rainy night ready to eat some delicious warm soup. We were greeted by a very nice guy who was clearly busting his ass to do the work of 3 people. He said to us "I'll be right with you" literally five minutes we had to stand there until he had the capacity to take our order, they only had him and the girl in the kitchen working. We finally sat down after ordering and continued to watch this poor kid run around like a chicken with his head cut off taking, filling and ringing up orders all while apologizing to customers for the long wait. Then a girl who had been sitting down eating (we assumed was a customer) got up and started wiping down already clean tables and carrying around a broom (not actually using it). Ahhhh she must be the 3rd employee, this should help that poor kid. NO such luck. She proceeded to chat with the only girl in the kitchen who was cooking. Then enters the girl in the kitchen's boyfriend ... She leaves the kitchen with orders still coming in and proceeds to stand in the middle of the restaurant giving her boyfriend an incredibly long and extremely awkward 3 minute hug. Finally, she returns to the kitchen and fills some of the orders while the kid in front continues to apologize for the long wait. My advice - make sure to have someone over the age of 18 supervising your workers! read more

Good food, awful service. One staff member constructed sandwiches in the back, while another rang up orders, dished out soups, bussed tables, and clean tables. Since at every step we had to wait for the cashier/busboy/server/food prepper to do her other 3 jobs, the whole process took about 4 times as long as it should have. The tomato soup was impressively thick and creamy with a rich tomato flavor, but if I have to wait forever and a day to get it, no thank you. I will not be back again. read more

I had to go to ladles the other day because a friend really wanted to go. This time I just got a sandwich and we went after lunch time (it was closer to 2pm) and it wan't terrible.
