The sausage burrito had just the right amount of Mexican food flavor and the red salsa had the perfect amount of smokiness and sweetness to compliment it. I usually hit this place up for lunch if I am nearby for work. I usually only get the tostada Grande with chicken or al pastor. I was here about a week ago and got the tostada. As usual, the meat is well prepared and the sour cream is really good. The shell is was cooked to perfection. The only issues are the mens bathroom is a little rough and if you sit outside a little breeze always wants to blow stuff around. Was driving thru Ventura to get to Ojai and craved some quick Mexican. This place was the closest to my gps location but the reviews were so-so. Drove by anyways and the place was pretty packed (outdoor seating), and all the clientele looked local. Don't let the drabby exterior fool you, their food is pretty good. I ordered the Lengua Burrito and was pleasantly surprised. Out came a burrito the size of a fricken baby, and boy was it good. Lengua was super tender and the remaining ingredients (rice beans salsa onions etc) were cooked right on/fresh. At first I was disappointed that the salsa in the burrito was a red one, as I prefer the traditional green salsa if youre having lengua, but the red salsa complemented it very well I usually don't knock places on their decor but for heaven's sake update your community message board. I work in the area, and I've been to lunch at Lalo's many times. It's not the "best" but it's pretty good. I've tried an assortment of the menu items. Every time I go there I get overly full fast, because the portion size is pretty big. I live in Oxnard where I can find amazing mexican food for the same price, so this gets just an "OK" from me. On the avenue there are several other mexican places to eat at. Many are very good, and some even better than Lalos. But, for the price you are going to get more food from Lalos. And, I think that's what people like. Especially men who have a hearty appetite. I personally would prefer to eat at some of the other places, but that's only because I grew up in Oxnard where there are so many amazing Mexican food spots to eat at. For me Lalo's is just Okay... I keep going there for lunch because it's close by and cheap... but I never feel like I'm completely amazed by any of their food. It's just good, and cheap. read more

My first time there. Pastor soft taco, good flavor, a little dry. Nice presentation with sliced radish, lime wedge and chopped onion. Carnitas hard taco was marred by the stale shell and inferior guacamole. The carnitas burrito, at $5, was impressively large, and had spot-on rice and beans and flavorful carnitas of the dry, chewy variety (a good thing--sometimes carnitas is too moist and greasy). Red salsa coulda been spicier, but was adequately flavorful. The green was kinda smoky and very flavorful. Looking forward to trying a chile verde burrito next time. Service was quick. read more

This place is off of highway 33 I believe heading towards Ojai. We were actually looking to go to another restaurant in that little community but that place was closed. On our way back we spotted this restaurant from afar, bright colors and a lot of people outside. When we got there I loved seeing the menu in great detail, pictures described what we would expect to be ordering. There was a lot of seating area in and outside. We ordered two fish tacos, a fried potato taco, an order of beef taquitos with guacamole, a al pastor torta, a shrimp taco, a lemonade, orchata and a tamarindo drink. My torta was delicious, my wife said that the said that the potato taco needed some seasoning, my daughter enjoyed the shrimp taco and the taquitos were also lacking a bit of flavor. I believe that the drinks are not house made we did not enjoy the orchata, tamarindo and lemonade. The Price for all of this was about 43 bucks not to bad for three people. I would have preffered a salsa bar instead of getting up and asking for salsa. Bathroom was slam and very dirty, my wife took my 9 year old daughter in there and she said it was pretty nasty in there. The indoor seating area was too hot to be in, it needs some fans or an ac unit. Over all I would recommend this place for people wanting to get a quick bite to eat. read more

I've always gone to Lalo's for their shrimp cocktails. Yesterday, i phoned in an order, 2 small shrimp and abalone cocktails. They took my order wrong and only made the cocktails with abalone. We did not find this out until we were already home (OJAI). We called them right away when we realized the cocktails had no shrimp! The girl who took the order quickly answered with "I was having a hard time hearing you" and "I remember you confirmed to only abalone". She immediately blamed us and did not apologize for their mistake. We drove back to get this corrected. They took the cocktails back and only threw in a few shrimps and topped if off this fresh avacado. I thought they were going to make us fresh cocktails after driving with them in the car for about an hour. This has been the worst experience ever with Lalo's. Not forget to mention, their prices have gone up ALOT!! read more

In door & our door seating now, beautifully done 2 mimic the rustic old Spanish theme of Mexican heritage & the ladies at the front remember u, the chef line is quick & serves the food on point. They will provide u with chips & salsa if a seafood plater is ordered which i think is fare.
