This was the first brewery I've ever tried and it really got me into discovering different brews anywhere that I go now. Let me say, however, this one reallyset the bar high. I love the set up of tables and layout of everything. It was a little confusing to find because the sign wasn't too visible from the street but it's right in the front of the building. On my way to the bathroom I found out that there were board games and that was such a bonus for me. The staff was beyond friendly and really added to the relaxing and welcoming atmosphere. The last few years have been exciting for a beer lover on the island of O'ahu! Lanikai is one of the newest breweries, and is already producing excellent brews. Situated mauka of the main part of Kailua town, it's easy to find amid all the shops. They have no parking, so the best bet is nearby Safeway. Located in an old warehouse next to a wonderful smelling wood shop, it has a stark sense of a modern and clean brewery. Large brew kettles line the walls, with kegs and equipment are stored neatly. I liked seeing the small bottling machine; you can see how small-scale the operation is when they can only fill about 6 bottles at a time! It made me appreciate the care that goes into each of those big bottles that have been slowly finding their way into grocery stores around the islands. The signs are welcoming and the art on the bottles is reflected in the accoutrements in the office and tasting room. The bar has just a handful of stools, but that shouldn't be a problem as people come and go frequently. They have a small tap with four types of beer; their production three plus limited releases. On my first trip, I got to try the Hamakua Sunrise, which was more delicious than I thought it would be. Their production beers are the Moku IIPA, Pillbox Porter, and Route 70 Saison; all Kailua namesake beers. I always love when places have a sense of local and a well defined platform. Bottles are large and cost about $10. Samples of everything is available for $2/glass. There is no limit on samples. Growlers are available, and is the only way to buy any of the limited releases in large quantities. Be sure to take a look around the brewing facility. Talk to the staff; they are very friendly and love what they're doing. I look forward to releases of new brews in the future, especially with how easy it is to stop by for a sip and head on your way. Their view of the surrounding marshes and mountains is incredible. This is the perfect stop on a beer tour of the island, for locals and tourists alike. Cheers! read more

So, so disappointing. Tried all five of their beers. Of those, only the saison was finishable/drinkable but really not good. The other four were quite awful. My friend and I, no kidding, each took one sip of the two IPAs, one red ale, and one more (forgot what it was), and then pushed them aside. Kudos to the server who only charged us half price for these. Still, awful tasting local beer. I have to say, these were the worst-ever microbrews I've ever tasted. And really, a charge to taste awful tasting beer? Shouldn't be that way... read more

It's hard to find this place, as their signage is hard to see. There is no parking. You have to park on the street. (Try to avoid getting run over by over zealous drivers as you cross the street. It's poorly lit and no crosswalks.) Their beer selection is small, maybe 4 or 5 on tap. Unfortunately, every one of their beers, which I believe they brew themselves, are non-standard fare. They add an ingredient, like vanilla, pikake, lemongrass or flowers. I wanted just an honest old plain beer and if that's what you're after, go elsewhere. There is no air conditioning and it's a really old place, so it's noisy and somewhat dirty. Most of the patrons were 20-something kids from the mainland. This ain't no bar. read more

Out of this world delish. We were stopping by the Naish shop and stumbled upon LBC on accident. I grew up on Oahu and I'm so stoked that cool places like this are opening up. Definitely check it out! Just came in to the brewery and tried both of the brews; the imperial IPA and the Pillbox Porter. The pillbox had some nice vanilla undertones and the double IPA was out of this world. I don't mean to compare brews, but the IPA had the same flavorful taste as a dogfish head 90 minute and the 90 minute is one of the best IPA's in the game, IMO. Anyways, Dan O was one of the founders and poured my fiancée and I 6-8 ounce samples of both the IPA and the Porter. He was the man and very knowledgeable and passionate about his craft. I respect that. Our favorite was the Imperial IPA, which is a double IPA. We bought a hat and a bottle of the imperial and we're feeling nice after those samples. Highly recommend checking this place out. It's a little hard to find but its in the back of the shopping center right across the street from Midas and definitely worth hitting up. read more

I've lived in Oahu for 20 years, after living for even longer in the Bay Area. There are three things I missed from the Bay Area great; Mexican, Szechuan, and beer. Well, the search for great beer is over. I drive-in from town once every couple of months to meet friends. I can say, the beer here keeps getting better. From your standard IPA bursting with bold flavors to their innovative pilsners often made with local fruits, like Lilikoi or Mango, and to the dark creamy stout. Lanikai Brewing is paradise for beer lovers. The menu is constantly changed so just try what looks interesting. you won't be disappointed. The staff is friendly and attractive and the owner, Steve is the nicest host. Only two issues are parking can be a bit scarce, and they don't serve food. The good news is one of Oahu's finest taco trucks is parked outside most evenings. Street tacos and beer don't sound like gourmet food, but it is here. read more

This is BY FAR the worst service in Kailua. I have resisted writing a BAD review the LAST FOUR times I have attended, out of restraint. But geez, this last one took the cake. It took one hour and forty five minutes for our pizza to arrive to the table! And I'm there for a beer, when my glass is approaching empty, perhaps I may want another? Especially when I have to wait so long for food. However, it takes a hand wave on my part and/or a gesture to get someone's attention LONG after I have actually finished my beverage to get another one ordered, which takes way too long to come to me. Not really sure who exactly is running the "efficiency" department here but everyone I know has the same sentiments about the service. If the pizza wasn't so good, I don't know of a reason to return. read more

I love checking out new brewpubs. Visiting cousins in the area, so we all decided to check out this one. First off... parking sucks. That said, we were greeted with enthusiasm and easily found a table. Decor was nice, wooden tables and lots of light. A good number of customers without being crowded and noisy. The beer list looked interesting... the brewers obviously wanted to use local ingredients, which I applaud. Unfortunately, a little too much for my taste. Tried Flagpoles (a witbier made with lilikoi) and the Pillbox Porter (made with Hawaiian and Tahitian vanilla). The witbier was VERY sour and, unfortunately, I hate sours. Couldn't even finish half (I tried). The description should have mentioned it. The porter was okay but nothing special. I had just had the Black Porter from BeerLab, which I thought had more substance. My cousins had similar issues. Flavors too strong (a little goes a long way) or just okay. Would we come here again? Probably not. A little too frou-frou for my taste, but others may like it. read more

Beer was good, pizza was amazing, waitress was great! I even bought a shirt. What killed it for me was the absolute rude lady working at the bar. As I was leaving I needed change for a $20 and when I asked she gave me a look of disgust and said I'm going to have to wait. I just spent over $100 and tipped our waitress well and you treat a guest like this. Anyway I spotted our waitress and she gave me change on the spot. Excellent craft beer tucked along the marsh! I love this place for many reasons. First and foremost, Lanikai Brewing produces a high quality product that is consistent throughout every flavor. The establishment is powered by 10 hard-working local folks who are committed to excellence. High standards matter! Second: I love Lanikai Brewing because they are painstakingly committed to using local products. Lilikoi foraged from the valley? Yes. Strawberries from Maui? Yes. Pikake plants from the neighbor? Yes. Cacao from Hawaii island? Yes. If you didn't already know, using local ingredients cues a long federal process of evaluation because our goodness is not often on their "federally approved list" of regular stuff...this process can be so long that it can cost a craft brewery more overhead just to go through the whole gamut. That being said, Lanikai Brewing has committed to going through that process time and time again to ensure that you get the most amazing mac nut brew or an exceptional delivery of hibiscus in an IPA. Third: Lanikai Brewing is backed by REALLY NICE AND GENEROUS people. They even let us do yoga and drink beer on their property for a one-of-a-kind event. This place is a hidden gem! I LOVE BEER, and this place had made it to the top of my list of Oahu Breweries. I've thoroughly enjoyed myself everytime I've made it down here. I kinda want to tell you otherwise though so it's not crowded next time I go, but I won't to them. If you love beer, then stop by and check them out. It's kind of a small tasting room, so expect standing room only. They have three regular brews and three seasonal brews. Their saison rocks! The porter is well balanced.
