After standing in line, I overhear a person order "can't decide" which makes my mind spin as to was it a chocolate or vanilla base. Surprised that I found the ice cream to be pretty average if not kind of mediocre due to the artificial taste in one of the scoops we had. My husband loves coconut milk/cream and coconut flavored stuff as well as sweets in general so he was very excited to try this place. My husband was interested in the coconut macadamia nut fudge and coconut. He asked if the base of them were coconut and the person helping him said yes. To him that meant the base of the ice cream was made using mainly coconut milk so I double checked and asked if it was dairy free. And we were told no, all the ice creams have dairy except the sorbets. We were told that if he wanted coconut flavor base that the coconut macadamia nut fudge and plain coconut were the two that had that. So that's what my husband chose. 2 scoops on a cone. He thought the cone wasn't as good as other house made waffle cones he'd had, it didn't seem as fresh as other yelpers had said and that maybe it was slightly stale. The coconut macadamia nut fudge tasted very much like artificial coconut flavoring and not like actual coconut. I did not like it at all. My husband regretted getting it later on. The plain coconut tasted more like real coconut milk but not 100%. There were a total of 28 flavors to choose from. 5 of those being dairy free sorbet. I am an ice cream connoisseur. I was very excited to try Lapperts ice cream, I have seen many good reviews. The ice cream itself is nothing special. However, It has interesting flavors that they are able to pull off. I got the banana sundae and was not impressed. The ice cream was all melted into liquid since they put so much hot fudge on it. I don't even know if the two flavors I got or good or not. However, the toppings, such as the bananas, macadamia nut, chocolate dipped waffle cone piece, and whipped cream were all very good. If you do end up getting the banana ice cream sundae, I recommend monitoring how much hot fudge they put on your ice cream. The staff was nice, however, one of the boys who worked there had an AirPod in their ear. It wouldn't have bothered me, besides the fact he would not stop asking each individual what flavors they wanted. Ordinarily i would give Lapperts a 5 star rating. When we are on our annual trip to Kaua'i with our 4 grandchildren and their parents, we go there every day for one or two scoops for each of the grandkids. I have noticed that the servers are invariably morose looking - they never smile! Possibly they don't like serving to all of the tourists, but it would be better for business, if the young ladies were more friendly or just learned to smile. Today's "adventure" took the cake. We arrive at 5:10 p.m. and the store was closed with no sign about when it would reopen. The nice couple sitting and waiting patiently, said that the store had been closed for about 10 minutes. So the grands went window shopping while I kept our position among the numerous people who came by and were disappointed that they couldn't get their afternoon fix of Lapperts. At about 5:30, a young lady worked put up a sign saying that they would reopen at 5:50 p.m. Since we had already waited a considerable amount of time, I tapped the window and a young woman with heart shaped glasses (maybe also pink tinted), came to the door and said, "we just closed (which I know wasn't true at all) and the reason for the closure was that they had to work until 8:00 p.m. Her response was not the least bit customer friendly. There were many ways to have been customer oriented and for the young ladies to have a break. Since she said that there were 3 of them, they could have each taken a separate break and rotated in and out. Her response to my concern about the large number of people's business that was lost, "write to corporate." I didn't think about driving my grands to Koloa because we stay on Poipu every Xmas and it is the best and the closest. I would like to see someone from corporate address the issues posed here - very unfriendly young women servers, although they give generous portions; closure when the business probably lost about 25 customers or more. Omg I can still remember how great this place smelled. The aroma of the waffle cones grabs you by the nose drags you into their shop. So many delicious flavors to choose from. I live on Oahu and it's one of my favorite ice cream shops at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, so of course I had to stop by when I was in Kauai. My favorites are the Heavenly Hana, Kauai Pie, and now the Aunty Lilikoi's Passion Fruit Sorbet. Lilikoi is one of my favorite flavors and it was just amazing- so tart yet so light and refreshing! I love the heavenly hana for the marshmallows and chocolate almonds- always satisfies that chocolate craving. For a bit more coffee flavor, I love to get the Kauai pie (a classic!). I just absolutely love this ice cream shop and love that their flavors have so much stuff in them (whether it's mac nuts, chocolate chunks, almonds or more!!).
