I'm always craving good Pollo a la Brasa, but there aren't many places that do it well in the area. I usually have to go far out of my way. I had some free time and came here for a late lunch/early dinner. I remember reading mixed reviews. I often come to this plaza when I'm in the mood for a burrito from La Azteca. Since I was craving rotisserie chicken, that's why I came in. I was disappointed not to see chicken cooking on the fire and saw the oven empty and seemingly out of order - not a good sign. The server greeted me and asked where I'd like to sit. I sat by the television and window, but ended up people-watching. I wanted to order a half chicken, but the server checked with the kitchen and said they only had quarter chickens. That's kind of odd, since the restaurant's name is "a la Brasa". Another red flag. I ended up ordering the 1/4 Chicken with Rice and French Fries ($15.99). It was a pretty good deal, but when she totaled the bill, I saw $20.07 and asked about a service fee. The service charge was 15% and considered gratuity. I don't mind it, as I always tip 20%. The rotisserie chicken was pretty good, but not the best I've had. They serve it on a very large plate, which I felt was to make the portion seem larger than it was. The presentation was nice, with parsley sprinkled on the plate. The rice and French fries were good. The rice had a garnish of parsley and tasted like chicken rice. The fries were golden, perfectly cooked, and salted, served with ketchup. The chicken came with a green aji sauce that had a nice, mild spice. I asked for something spicier, and they brought out a habanero sauce, which was perfect. Proceed With Caution -- Serious Food Safety Concerns & No Follow-Up I visited Las Brasas on Friday around 5:30 p.m. with my boyfriend, hoping to try a new Peruvian spot. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant was empty when we walked in.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We asked for a rotisserie chicken and were told they had run out of whole chickens, yet somehow still had chicken for all other dishes. Odd, but we ordered plantains, cassava strips, chicken chaufa, tallarín saltado de pollo, and chicha morada. Our server Teresa was extremely sweet and polite -- no issues with her at all. When I asked about the automatic 15% gratuity, she was kind but couldn't say much; that's clearly an owner decision. The food itself raised concerns. The chaufa was a huge mound of soggy rice with very little chicken and none of the typical ingredients. My tallarín came with a thick, unusually dark sauce that tasted extremely sweet with a bitter aftertaste -- not the traditional flavor profile I've known and cooked for 25+ years. After two bites, I stopped eating. The bill came to almost $93, including a mandatory 15% gratuity added even for a party of two, which is highly unusual. Within about an hour and a half of eating, I developed stomach cramps that progressed into diarrhea and nausea that lasted through the weekend -- all while I was preparing for surgery on Monday. My boyfriend ate some chicken too, so it wasn't the chicken. It was the sauce. I had only eaten an egg sandwich earlier that day, so there was no other food source. On Saturday, I called the restaurant to report what happened. Teresa answered and said she would pass my information to the manager, Sandra, but she almost hung up before asking for my number. I never received a call back. It is now Wednesday -- still no follow-up. As someone who works in food safety, this lack of response is extremely concerning. Because they failed to contact me, I will be filing a report with the local health department so they can inspect and ensure guest safety. If you choose to dine here, please proceed with caution. Highly disappointed. I went in on a Monday, which was my biggest mistake apparently. It was empty except for one other table. Decor is ok. Not traditional, just looked like some bbq spot. But I don't care about decor as long as the food is good. I ordered the quarter chicken, salsa criolla, plátanos, and had to order the rice and beans separately. First issue, they don't let you order rice and beans as a side to your chicken. That is completely bogus. That's a standard side! I've never been to any Peruvian spot where they did not have that as the main option to go with your chicken. So because I hard to order separately it was an exaggerated bowl of beans with about a cup of rice. They need to change that asap. I told the waitress, who by the way was sweet, that I didn't want the fries that come with the chicken but when she brought it out it came with fries. I told her she can take them and she told me that I can just take them home. Why would I want to take home some food I didn't want in the first place?? I took the chicken off the plate and told her she can take it back. She came back with the plate again with just the basic ice berg lettuce on it. I told her again that I didn't want it. Who eats iceberg lettuce still? I haven't since 2008. Secondly, my chicken was clearly old and dryer than a popcorn fart. It had a weird taste almost like old pork. Idk. The rice was also hard/chewy. Not like it's been overcooked or undercooked but like it's old rice sitting in back of the fridge for weeks. I was so heated. I understand it's a Monday and not a busier day, but why do I have to suffer cause Mondays I have some free time and I'm spending my hard earned money?? If you know your food is gonna be trash on a Monday then close the restaurant that day. Waste of money! The only thing that was decent was the plátanos and the only thing that was good was the salsa criolla and that Peruvian green sauce I love. A very delicious Peruvian lunch with colleagues here. It is a fast food Peruvian place, Covid ready with plexi between tables and a very helpful waiter. She gave us water right away and was informative about the menus and what's good here. So we tried her 3 favorites and none of us was disappointed. We ordered roast chicken, ribs and a shrimp wrap. The food is actually really good at this place. No complaints about that. It's unfortunate that I had a very bad experience with the serving staff one day. I had eaten dinner and had walked out of the restaurant and left my jacket. Someone quickly came out and gave it back to me. Not until I got home did I notice my airpods were not in their case which was in my jacket. I tracked my airpods and saw that they were still in the restaurant. I called the next morning and asked if they had picked them up yesterday. They said no and said I could come and check. I did and as I got closer to my airpods they stopped me and said I couldn't continue without the police. Obviously somebody had placed them in the rear of the restaurant and weren't cooperative. I decided to give this place a chance and see what Peruvian food can be like. The service while not horrible did leave allot to be desired, like getting to pick your own dish. I wanted to get something simple and quick in order to give them the best chance and tried to order some salchi-whatever fries. She almost refused to give me that plate saying that I needed to try the played because they were better and actually meals and not just small plates of fries. I explained I wanted to try the shrimp as that was what looked decent. She once again said that I wouldn't like it and that I should get the (obviously more expensive plate) lomo plate. In the end I asked her if it was possible to Atleast add the shrimp to the plate since thats really what I wanted. She said no problem didn't explain she would ring up a complete different item and came back a few later with my food and drink. All in all the food is no where near worth the prices that are being charged. No matter how many ways you dress up fries at the end of the day they are still just fries. 35$ for a one person meal at a location where your clearly using frozen fries is outrageous. Now I don't know if this server is asked to do this but not only was I charged a service fee on top of being expected to leave a tip she never explained that she would be charging me for a 3 meat plate and then not provide me the 3rd meat. By the time she told me my total was 35$ my phone was already over the scanners and I had to ask for a receipt just to figure out what I ordered. All in all if what your craving is fries not only Might you not be able to order them, they might not be that great. read more
