I thought about deducting one star for a long wait time, but I am going to give all five and here's why: 1. Food - WOW: there is nothing more terrible after waiting a long time for your table at an eagerly anticipated dining experience than to have the food be subpar. That was not the case at Late August. My sister friends and I have reservations on a Saturday during HRW. Yes, there was a wait. I admittedly was underwhelmed when reading the HRW menu. But thank goodness the food itself far exceeded the written word. Starting with the Fried Roots. Please do yourself and your table a favor and order these. There are French Frie' mature and healthful cousin. Then came the1913 Salad. It was a refreshing combo of sweet and spice, with watermelon, sesame seeds, cucumbers and a piece of fly bread. This won my heart, because I thought it would be lackluster. It was not. I was torn on my entree because I'm an aspiring pescatarian. I went vegeterian this evening and had the Chili Relleno. YUM. It's stuffed with beans and has a bit of spice from the poblano. And finally dessert. I had the chocolate custard. It reminded me of a dessert you'd get in Europe - not tricked up and overly sweet, just good. 2. Ambiance - this joint is tiny. It's like the family room in a big house. It only accommodates a small crowd. There is another dining room in the back that I believe is reserved for those choosing a Chef's Table experience. But the space is lovely. Our waiter told us that a less crowded time to dine is prior to 5 pm. Noted. 3. Service - While it was a long time to get our table ( and mind you, we finally chose to sit outside), the service was great. Each of our waiters were attentive, fun and knowledgable of the menu. I'll add that each of my sister friends opted for drink pairing. Three chose wine and one the mocktail pairings. SF was blown away and continually exclaimed how good each drink was. I have mixed feelings. The chicken sandwich I got was delish. It came with cucumber salads but the amount of tajin and lime that was on it slapped me in the face. I ate it cause I love this normally but I couldn't finish. And I always finish so that says a lot. Crispy chips...it's in the "ion district" so it was very fancy yet very hollow. All in all I really enjoyed dining at Late August up until the end. Let me start by saying the restaurant is very chic, warm, and trendy and the service was great. A friend and I dined here a few weeks ago and ordered the Texas Caesar, LA BBQ Seafood, Strip Loin and of course had to order the Navajo Doughnuts for dessert. Everything came out coursed well and tasted devine. I loved the fun twist on the Caesar salad and we devoured the Strip Loin, the Yucca Fries and sides on it were very tasty! They had a great wine selection also and I was happy that the sommelier helped advise on what to order to pair with our food and even offered a few tastings for us. Everything was great until the check came and we tried to use the InKind App (which is advertised on their website when you open the webpage) to pay. The InKind App has you download the app to get $25 off $75 total and we asked to split the bill so we could both do this as we both downloaded the app. Our server didn't understand or didn't do it, I'm not sure, but when I asked to speak with the manager to explain it, it went downhill from there. I was basically in a low scale argument with the onsite manager about the validity of the app and he stated it was a 3rd party. In which case it should not be advertised the moment you open up the webpage. They did honor the discount from both of us downloading the app but the way the manager fought me on it was ridiculous. read more

I think I'm just waking up from a beautiful dream. I was fortunate to dine at this sophisticated- cool restaurant/bar last week. I was mesmerized by the very original tasting service! The Afro-Hispanic fusion based menu was out of this world. The 7 tastings were as beautiful to look at as they were to eat. The service was exceptional with knowledgeable servers and hosts. I tried the Cabrito soup and was beyond disappointed. I ordered a to-go version and was FLOORED when I saw the smallest portion of soup for over $30! It should be a crime for a restaurant to think this is okay. But they do, so here we are. Now if the soup was mind-blowing, my regret would fade, but it was just off. I'm from the islands so I love goat and know it is also not the most expensive meat, so their up charge is insane! Ok, still getting over the smallest amount of soup I have ever had for over $30! . The soup is more of a thick sauce that you would coat in a pasta. They rendered the soup down too much, where the sauce thickened (most of the liquidy broth in the soup was gone), so it just has a thick salty aftertaste. I eat a lot of soup and it needs to be flavored enough, but not to the point where it is hard to keep going back. I LOVE some seasoning and can take pretty seasoned food, so if I say salty (not in a good way) it's salty! That was not a soup. It should be a sauce for something. And the to-go container they put it in was diabolical! I had 3-4 pieces of goat, in a thick/overly rendered/salty sauce with a few other veggies. May give them another try... but was not impressed by this $30 dollar thick sauce! Oh! The service via phone was great! I appreciate the gentleman who explained dishes to me. read more

But unfortunately service fell short. I'm not sure if our waitress was new but she completely forgot items we ordered and then charged us for a drink we never received which was removed when we informed her. We had a fantastic lunch at Late August! The restaurant is pretty (located in that relatively new development near the Sears); the service is great; and the food is what puts it over the top. The food is a combination of Southern with some creole and is just delicious. Here's what we tried: -Cornbread: The bring out complementary cornbread, with a butter that has corn and peppers in it, and it was great--a wonderful start to a good, southern meal. -Field pea hummus: Our table shared the hummus as an appetizer, and it was absolutely fantastic, my favorite part of the meal. The hummus was a little tangy and so savory and topped with chorizo. On the side there was fried bread, which is exactly what it sounds like: bread that is fried and a little doughy, so good. -Gumbo: This gumbo was surprisingly fresh--the veggies in it were crispy (not smooshy), and it wasn't greasy at all. If you want a fresh, modern take on gumbo, this hits the spot. read more

Could not sleep without submitting this review of my experience tonight at Late August, the newest restaurant/concept by Chef Chris Williams/ Lucille Hospitality Group. I love Lucille's and was excited when I found out there was a new offering with unique menu items to try. Had a rare evening to myself. So, I visited for a solo date. Atmosphere: Complimentary valet parking, with a short walk up to the stunning restaurant entrance. Love the modern vintage appeal of the furnishings/decor, definitely giving relaxed but cultured/refined. Upon entering I was greeted by friendly staff and was seated immediately at a cute table in view of the kitchen. It was a nice treat to watch the artistry in action as both head chefs took turns plating. (Yes, Chef Chris Williams was present and actively presiding over the kitchen). Service: I really hate that I forgot my waiter's name as I would have loved to give him his flowers in this review alongside the General manager and sommelier Danny Davis. They were both knowledgeable, courteous and kind. Both checked on me frequently, but not so much that it distracted from the experience and each spent time telling me a little about their backgrounds and the things they loved about Late August and Chef Chris Williams' social/charitable/community impact. I'd read about/witnessed most of the things mentioned but it was heartening to hear them as part of the rapport building while at the restaurant... it solidified the deep sense of pride that I felt upon entering the restaurant. Make sure to ask your server about the commissioned artwork by Robert Hodge. I could go on and on here... but the bottom line is that the service I received was outstanding. Food: I had the Texas Ceasar, Smoked Chicken Drumettes, A1 Basted Strip Loin and Navajo Doughnuts. All excellent! All beautifully plated and contrary to some of the reviews I've read I feel like portions are generous for the quality and price point. -Texas Ceasar - The overall freshness of the ingredients was the highlight of this dish, not only the fruits and vegetables, but the croutons! The croutons had a unique taste unlike any I've had before and just set the salad off. They could sell these separately as a snack/ gift item. I typically order my salad dressing on the side and appreciate that the greens were not tossed/drenched with the dressing. The dressing was nice and light in flavor, highlighting the quality produce. -Smoked Chicken Drumettes - Holy Mole! LOL... the mole sauce on these was marvelous, full of complex flavor/spice, but not heat. Loved the addition of the crackling garnish for a little variance in texture. -A1 Basted Strip Loin - This is the best steak I've had in a long time (possibly ever). I ordered the steak medium well and the chefs new the assignment. Typically, when I order this cook at restaurants I am offered a basically burnt grey/brown steak which I accept because I prefer this over a bloody steak, but not this time. Gorgeous crusty exterior and buttery (but not bloody) interior with subtle, soft smokey sable pink center ombre-ing into brown - and the steak was not the sole highlight for me. I loved the chimichurri sauce and the pickled cucumber and tomato - reminded me of my favorite summer salad/garnish growing up. I could eat the cucumber and tomato garnish all day every day, definitely elevated a refreshing, nostalgic flavor for me. The Yucca steak fries hit also. They were perfectly crispy on the outside and fluffy/tender on the inside. -Navajo Doughnuts - Reminiscent of both a beignet and a version of sopapilla that I've had... like the choice of chocolate and fruit as a garnish over cinnamon. Beverages: Running out of space. So, I will just say that if you are a sweet wine/cocktails/white liquor/bubbly kinda lush like me you will thoroughly enjoy the Highway vodka & cherry cocktail and the Biancospino Moscato D'Asti. I know that this is going to sound cliche, but I truly wish I could give this restaurant more than 5 stars. This place deserves to be as packed as Lucille's. My experience was phenomenal and I hope that my pictures and words do it justice. I used Open Table to book a reservation through Maps on my iPhone and experimented paying with the InKind app. Can't wait to make the haul from The Woodlands to go back and try more things! read more

Well the service was spectacular. Everyone was so nice. It is a really nice restaurant and I brought a toddler so I was nervous even though we've been taking him out to eat at nice places since he was a few weeks old. Food was prompt and there was a bit of a wait for the main dish but that octopus was worth it. The field pea hummus with the fry bread was really tasty. And this two year old of mine loved the field pea even with the grasshoppers and that octopus was so delicious to him. The coco mojito mock tail was just wow. I love a place who doesn't just mix three things together for a mock tail without any thought and this was so tasty. I've been appointed as the designated person in the marriage to vet out new restaurants and Houston Restaurant Week is the perfect time to do that. I was only sad the website for HRW said gumbo but the paper menu clearly didn't. However we would have missed out on that field pea hummus so I think it all worked out. read more

We were looking for dinner that wasn't too far from our hotel and the Michelin guide for Houston recommended Late August. Our party ordered the smoked drumettes, fry bread, octopus, memelitas, tomato salad, fried chicken, chile releno, and the half rack. Everyone tried everything and apart from the children not liking octopus the meal exceeded expectations. The flavors in each dish were amazing. The drive back was spent debating a favorite and in the end it was agreed there were too many amazing dishes to pick a single one. I don't leave a lot of yelp reviews but I really enjoyed everything about this restaurant and hope the great people of Houston appreciate what they have. Cheers! read more

Understand this is my third time eating here. Service was subpar and the food is inconsistent. The staff needs to be updated on what is on their menu. Unfortunately tonight my encounter with the hostess wasn't the best. She was adamant about our table leaving for a 730 reservation and it was only 6 o'clock. If you have set time limits for a reservation state that on the booking. We notified the waiter of the hostess's notification for us to leave and he did nothing but state that was unusual. We continued to order other items on the menu, however the hostess came back again at 7 to let our table know our time was coming to a close. Mind you the establishment was not packed whatsoever. I do not appreciate feeling rushed at an establishment where I'm still ordering food and drinks. read more

Yummm. Food and service here are great, and the ambiance is elevated and inviting. Nicholas was our server and he and the rest of the staff did a great job taking care of us. Seems like everyone's excited about this place! Love seeing restaurants that have really thoughtful menus with just enough variety for everyone but keeping it limited in a curated way. Some faves: smoked chicken drumettes, A1 basted strip loin, and the cabrito stew which Nicholas recommended we pair with the fry bread. If you've had Taiwanese cuisine before, the fry bread was light and fluffy similar to youtiao. Also tried the special jerk spiced branzino that was butter in our mouths. The oxtail stew was fabulous. Not pictured are the appetizers and the A1 Steak, which we all tried and enjoyed. The greens lacked flavor and maintained more texture than most cooked greens. The fried chicken was overcooked, as was the burger. There were great comments on the yucca fries, the seafood platter, and the drinks that our group ordered (not pictured). You could tell that they used quality ingredients with the appropriate amount of seasonings. The redfish was delicious and flaky and HUGE! The pickled vegetables really made it. Three Couples Date Night The Seafood BBQ was very tasty with the seasoning soaking into the Fry Bread. My hubby enjoyed the Smash Burger with Egg. The rest of our party enjoyed their Steak and Oxtail Stew. The Navajo Beignets are great along with the Rice Pudding. All of our cocktails were on point. I really liked the Highway 288. The cocktails and wine off the HH menu were also very good. Location, at the Ion, is convenient. There is street parking near or a parking lot for a fee just out front. I had high hopes for this place but was utterly disappointed. We went for pre-dinner drinks and were told we could order at the bar and grab a table outside. That wasn't the case. The bartender told us we had to sit at a table and order from a waiter, so we tried to. After sitting for 20 minutes with no one stopping to ask us if we needed anything or give us water, I stopped someone. He went and asked who our waiter was. Regardless, we sat for another 30 minutes with no one offering to serve us. We continued to watch waiters and busboys pass us and several other tables without asking if anyone needed anything or filling water glasses. We tried to stop one waiter and he flat out shook his head and said he's not our waiter and refused to stop. All in all, the place is a pass. Very disappointed in something that needs to iron out the internal communication and processes. read more

Must admit we wanted to go to The Lymbar but it was closed for a private party :-). We were not disappointed. The food was excellent. We each had the gumbo which was delicious. It gave me more of a West African vibe than Louisiana but it was still quite good. We shared the field pea hummus and kitfo which was a steak tartare. Both dishes were tasty. The prices are on the high end but the portion sizes were large. The service was good. My only complaint is that the server did not tell us about the happy hour wine prices until we hesitated to buy wine by the glass. I felt like she should have led with that information. Extremely overpriced for the sub par quality of food, poor service and overall disappointing restaurant experience. We went for Houston Restaurant Weeks. It took time for the server to greet us and when asked for simple things like utensils, we had to ask again because they forgot. Food came out very slowly, timing was not well paced and that's not on the server but more so the kitchen. The food was really underwhelming for what we paid for. Typically I've had good experiences with HRW but we did their HRW menu with cocktail pairing and it was NOT worth it. First I had a crudo that I understand is a simple fresh raw course but this was so tiny! Then I had the steak which was cooked well but it came with overly salty yuca fries and this cucumber and tomato salad with tajin that felt like I could make it at home. My friend had the ribs that should have come with house-made corn tortillas but she just received replacement flour tortillas. I'm not sure how you can run out of elements for your dish by 8pm on a Friday night. For dessert I had the rice pudding brûlée which was pretty good. My friend had the doughnuts which looked dense and unappealing like sad sugared fried bread. First cocktail pairing was lychee martini which was overly sweet but to each his own. Second was a mezcal drink that was ok, would have been nice if our server discussed/explained our food and drink more. And for the last cocktail we actually didn't get a cocktail because the server said the bar was done making drinks (although we could clearly still see the bar open with a bartender making drinks). So we were given sparkling wine instead. Drink pairings cost more depending on if it's mocktails, wine, or cocktail pairing - each being more expensive. So to receive a sparkling wine instead of a cocktail because the bar didn't want to make another drink feels like we got bamboozled. Overall I would not recommend this place and would not come back unless they absolutely revamped everything - service, kitchen/food, etc. read more
