My husband and I went with a dear friend to celebrate her birthday. This was our second visit to Laura and the service was just as warm and welcoming as our first visit. We purposely tried different dishes this time and they were just as delicious as our initial visit. We shared the pizza Blanca as our appetizer. My hubby had the lasagna for his primo course. My friend and I both chose the bucatini, I had mine with shrimp and she added meatballs to her pasta. Everything was simply delicious. We skipped the secondo course and headed straight for dessert, I had the straciatella gelato (mouth watering), Diane and Kevin each had tiramisu (quite a large helping and delicious)! We were feeling like trying somewhere new and Italian sounded great. We came on a Saturday afternoon for lunch and it was a beautiful day to sit in the outdoor seating. Our service was terrific and we got the meatball appetizer, Agnolotti with scallops, the scallops entree, and the blackberry lemon cheesecake dessert. Everything was terrific! The scallops were cooked to perfection, the agnolotti was delicious and somehow light, which is not a word I would usually use to describe pasta. Everything was great and I will be back but the main event was the cheesecake. My dining partner said they would rank it as possibly the best dessert they've had in a restaurant, which is about the best compliment I could give. If you're thinking about dessert, do it. Great service here. Second time visiting and the food never disappoints! They recently changed ingredients to some of the dishes. My husband got the Bucatini and it was different last time. Of course I tasted both times and they were equally delicious. The Laura drink is my fave; don't know if I'll ever try something different. Last time I ordered the lasagna. Yum! Excellent restaurant! The service was impeccable from the moment we sat down, and the staff worked seamlessly. Our server Aiden was very attentive, kind and provided helpful suggestions with the menu. The environment is cozy and intimate, yet modern. We loved the beautiful pictures along the walls, and the sweet story behind the naming of the restaurant. The iced tea is a must-try, since Summerville is home of sweet tea! Really enjoyed our impromptu patio brunch recently. Service was great and the salmon ricotta was phenomenal. I've had many smoked salmon dishes in the area and this was easily among the top 3. The patio is covered and facing the street, but there is not much road noise. A heads up to focaccia or burrata lovers - the "burrata" comes with a focaccia based dinner roll now, so ask for the daily focaccia bread instead. The roll was unexpected (it's not listed on the menu as a roll at the moment) and is nice, but it's not great for sharing the burrata if that was your thought. However, they serve the daily focaccia in the cute square pan that it was likely baked in and it was delicious. Looking forward to our next visit! read more

Had really been looking forward to trying Laura since they opened and finally chose it for a birthday dinner this year. Sadly, I was really underwhelmed. Beef carpaccio was okay. Nothing wrong, nothing memorable. For an entree, I ordered the baked flounder with pistachio pesto, and this is where it went downhill...fast. The fish was really over cooked and fishy/not fresh tasting. The pesto on top had no flavor and did the fish no favors. So much so that I just pushed the flounder aside and ate the risotto underneath. Fortunately, the spinach and mushroom risotto was fantastic and filling. My mom had the scallops, and like the carpaccio, they were just okay. She also had a delicious risotto under hers (different from the spinach and mushroom) that saved the dish. I realize we didn't try any pizza or pasta, but for downtown Charleston prices, I expected polished and well-executed seafood dishes if they are going to be featured on the menu. The service, though extremely friendly was SO slow on an empty Wednesday evening. The ambiance is lack luster and not memorable (which wouldn't matter a bit to me if the food was fantastic and prices matched the ambiance a little closer). First time here...firstly, let me explain, our original reservation was for Thursday night but because of a death in the Laura serving family, they cancelled and rebooked all reservations for that Thursday in memory of that fallen employee...total respect for that!!! Upon arrival for our 6:30 reservation, I was seated 20 minutes early, which is great!! Hubby parked the car and I got a drink!!! Yummmm...blood orange martini! Hubby came in and ordered his vodka tonic...he said it was good...man of few words...I got the focaccia bread with anchovy butter...it was tasty, a little thicker bread than what I'm used to but the anchovy butter was tasty...sometimes a little fishy, but other times it was all good...hubs got the carpaccio...he said it was great!!! I ordered a bottle of rose Prosecco...yum!!!! Hubs got a sweet/unsweetened tea with lemon and said it was the best he'd ever had in the low country...so that's a positive! I was thoroughly enjoying my Prosecco... I ordered the bucatini cacio e Pepe...with a side of roasted potatoes...mainly saving those for my breakfast this weekend! totally yummy!!!! Hubs ordered the lobster trottole...it's a cream sauce and he's not a fan on cream sauce because 'all pasta should ONLY have a red sauce' but he enjoyed it! I am giving Nico's restaurant a 2 because of our amazing server Ray. Best server I have ever had. Bread $5 dollars a square not a loaf. No candles or atmosphere. Unbreathably hot. Nothing really to look at. Appetizer was the only good item we ate. Mine had tiny shrimp very over cooked. And the sauce was drenched in too much lemon. Wine average. My son and his wife think my Italian cooking is much better. For $180.00 for three people extremely overpriced for what they serve. The owner Nico could do much better. I was very disappointed in this restaurant. Menu extremely limited. Nothing at all for child. Pasta is extremely cheap to make. I grew eating it every day. We won't be back. Great dinner! Our table was ready at our reservation time. Johnny was our waiter, he was on time and knowledgeable. We had tomato tart and carpaccio for appetizers both prepared perfectly and plated beautifully. Entrees were serves piping hot, lobster gnocchi and pork milenease. Dessert was strawberry shortcake cheesecake and espresso. Also enjoyed a nice bottle of white wine from the great wine menu. The restaurant was clean and well appointed. From our past experience we did not order a lot of extras b/c the portion sizes were more than ample. But this time we left hungry. I have no idea whether everyone giving 5 stars truly has no palate or we got them on a VERY off day. Got 3 appetizers, 2 entrees and 2 drinks. The only thing good was the 1 Laura drink. Everything was very dried out. Meatballs were very dry and had an awful sour taste to them. Gnocchi were SO disappointing. Not sure if they were mixed wrong or just over cooked but they fell apart like bread. Portions are very undersized for the prices. Scallops came out cool(not quite cold yet). Spent $150 and went to McDonalds on the way home. I absolutely hate to leave this review given I was super excited for a new place in Summerville but given the strong hype I think its fair for people to know its not worth the wait for a reservation and certainly not worth the money. The couple next to us ordered a pizza, each took a few bites of 1 piece and asked us if our food was as as bad as theirs. We went to celebrate our 50th anniversary. This is a wonderful place for a special dinner. The staff is superior. Our waitress made our evening exceptional. We had Caesar salad (a little too rich for my taste), pasta bolognese (very meaty), and scallops (done perfectly). We shared each course which is how it is intended. We liked that way of serving. I hesitate to write this as we showed-up without a reservation on a Friday night during the second week they were open. I want to give a five-star review but after a few weeks I'm still disappointed and plan on giving it another go, making a reservation and giving them another try. I needed to preface with this long explanation as I'm one of those "yankees" from NY, (Italian-American) who takes her Italian food seriously and was so looking forward to trying Laura. As much as I LOVE the food in the Lowcountry and have the few additional pounds to show it, good Italian food like the offerings on Laura's menu is scarce here. We've only lived here six months so again, still searching and want to make Laura our "go to" right here in our chosen hometown of Summerville. We were accommodated outside at the bar, which was fine, as it was a pleasant evening and we stopped-in spur of the moment. The menu is extensive and I was pleased it wasn't the usual "Chicken Parm and heavy, run of the mill" pasta dishes. Laura is upscale with regional selections of an extensive variety and a beautifully descriptive menu. We started with two of the cocktails - they were ok, but not anything remarkable that we were expecting to make them stand out. The waiter/bartender was a little aloof and not terribly personable. Questions were answered with one word answers like he couldn't be bothered to make suggestions or upsell anything. He didn't seem to have a vested interest. There were three couples seated at the bar including us. I'm not certain he was making drinks for the entire restauraunt because he appeared to be simply waiting on the six people at the bar (we were all dining as well as drinking) I had the blood orange martini and my husband had the Old Fashioned. I wanted to order several things to try, but we don't eat much so we only ordered two entrees. I had the Casarecce"LauraBolognese" and my husband chose the lasagna. Both were excellent and generously portioned. We each took more than half of our meals home. The sauce on mine was delectable and I was looking for the bread to "mop" up some of that lovely sauce, but there was none to be found. I asked the bartender if there was bread. He answered with, "We SELL bread, but no. There is no bread provided." And he walked away. That did it for me. I didn't see the pictures adorning the walls up close because we were outside, but I guarantee in those homey old pictures with grandma presiding over the family dinners shown, there was bread somewhere on the table! I understand it isn't your run of the mill saladontheside kind of place, but a little plate of bread? We don't mind paying the upscale prices, but bread on the side is an expectation that I can't overlook and I'm drawing the line if I have to buy it and have an attitude from the person who waits on us about it. The desserts looked great, but we'll try them another time as we wouldn't have had room. We brought the remainder of our dinners home which were delicious reheated, and we had plenty of crusty bread (not from Laura) which completed the meal. I'll try again, but I will be cautious to order something that doesn't require bread unless I see it comes with it like the octopus which looks phenomenal and I want to try. read more

Tried Laura for the first and the food was pretty good. The Caesar salad, the signature drink "The Laura," and the burrata were the stars of the show for me. I had the Laura Bolgenese and my friend had the white pizza. Her pizza was better than my Bolgenese but it wasn't bad. It just needed a bit more salt. I can't say enough about the staff as they were very helpful. My biggest gripe was nothing really the restaurant could've prevented. We sat outside on the outside patio as that was the only place we could get a reservation. I only wish that they had more fans as everyone was miserably hot and sweating and that includes the poor servers. Overall it was not bad and I will go back... as long as there is inside seating available. read more

I'm blown way. Finally, a quality Italian restaurant that has a well trained staff, damn good food, and reasonable prices. Eat your heart out Charleston, we have the premier Italian eatery in the low country. And, we didn't have any of the main courses- appetizers, sides, and dessert for the three of us. We had the ricotta toast, artichoke, calamari, and mussels. Not being a fan of anything squid-like, - none of that deep fried stuff with a side of marinara- even I enjoyed the tender, fresh, and tasty calamari. The mussels were large and the broth well seasoned- my only complaint would be that we didn't ask for more bread to sop up the juices. Though the artichoke meat was a bit tough, everything else about it was tasty; just make sure to get to the center which was filled with a wonderfully flavored ricotta stuffing. For the sides, we ate the broccoli i and asparagus which is chopped to nice bite sized pieces, the gnochetti and cannelloni beans had very similar tomato based sauces but where the beans were swimming in the sauce, the gnocchetti was lightly sauced. Both delicious. For dessert, the sorbet and the semi freddo rounded out the meal were such pleasantly sweet- the sorbet was strawberry fresh and the mousse and cream made a spectacular semifreddo . Limoncello was fragrant and tasty, even though I felt it could have been a bit colder; and the espresso...well, let me simply say, this is one of only a handful of establishments outside of the ethnic restaurants of New York City that make a proper espresso- no bitterness whatsoever. Laura is a must go to restaurant. Next time, it's pasta for sure. read more

So you see 2 stars & you're reading this & asking yourself "this place is brand new. Does it really deserve 2 stars already?" I'll elaborate where I'm coming from. I'm half Sicilian. I've gone to hundreds of Italian restaurants in my time. For the most part I have a distinct radar for quality Italian cuisine, on many levels & many types. Northern & southern. And what Laura presented on the whole, I feel was not worth the price of admission. I came with my wife & we really had high hopes to find a new regular haunt. They present the menu, which had a good range of options, yet still felt like a cohesion was missing in some respects. I'll chalk that up to maybe this is still trial & error for the owner. They present this menu though as "ala carte". Like a steak house would do. But then also tell you that second dishes are designed to share to make up for this system. Ok sure. I was eyeing a few things & well, 4 of the dishes were already sold out. Not off to a flying start. So backups selected. First course was a minestrone soup & a beef carpaccio. The soup was very good small cup, wife ordered it. The carpaccio was about 5 bites of paper thin beef with some small slices of Parmesan. Tasty but brief. Second was the "shareable pasta". This dish came out in a 4"x6" iron plate & was gone in about 3-4 spoonfuls per person. There wasn't much to share. Then third course, my wife had a $26 fish that I would at best estimate to be 3 ounces. No sides. Literally 3 ounces of fish. Mine was a good sized pork chop for $28 but was largely forgettable, lacked much sauce & had a mustard crust but dry with no accompaniment on the plate. I'd ordered a $6 side of potato that was flavorless, dry & unimpressive. Dessert was cannoli. Possibly the worst I've had. Dense shell & rather than a proper cream cheese filling had what I can only guess was a mostly melted whip cream foam lacking any real flavor. My wife got an espresso, which is already a very small cup of coffee. Well that tiny cup wasn't even half full. I spent $180 after tip, left hungry & had a peanut butter & jelly sandwich when I got home. I think this place is operating on a certain pretense I'm used to seeing at maybe a chefs tasting or a French spot (and I've eaten more food at those). But value for cost against experience & quantity & I'm not sure why people would be motivated to return. The place looks very nice & the wait staff on point & courteous. But 80% of the experience is the food & I didn't leave there feeling any true satisfaction in that regard unfortunately. read more

The pasta was super fresh, lobster was cooked great, but I felt that there was wayyy too many veggies that overpowered the dish itself. From the moment you walk in the door, you are greeted with friendly faces and Professional personalities. I believe the reservation system has allowed the flow of a grand opening... to provide five-star service from the moment you step in the door. We were attended to at every moment but never interrupted during conversation or with a bite in our mouth. They waited till the right moment to offer you more to drink or to see if you needed anything to make your dining experience perfect. Our waiter explained the menu, and recommendations, which made it that much easier to make a decision from their impressive and plentiful menu. We started with the recommendation of the artichoke, which was cooked to perfection, and the focaccia bread. I also started with a cappuccino, which was ordered with no expectations. Their cappuccino was amazing. By the end of the evening, I ended up ordering two. My main course was lasagna, my sister had the meatball pizza, and our friend also had the lasagna. Every bite was mouthwatering and satisfying. We also ordered the muscles, which were made to perfection. The flavor, the temperature, and the plethora of options exceeded my expectations of this restaurant. We ordered the Lemon Sorbet, but we were a bit too late to the choice...as they were already sold out, so we opted for Strawberry Sorbet which was a perfect end to a perfect meal!!! I cannot say enough about every element of my meal. If you have guests in town or want an upscale night out, the decision to go here would be unforgettable. Thank you to the staff and the cooks for an over-the-top evening and the longing to return very soon. The focaccia bread was one of the best I have had nice and airy. Had the tiramsu for dessert and was awesome. Two cons though. Parking. I had asked for them to omit the peas if possible, but I guess not putting something in was too difficult or they had it premixed. Sill was tasty though.
