Jiang's Kitchen was very delicious, and we really enjoyed celebrating our Valentine's dinner here together. Our favorite dish by far was the lamb skewers -- they were so good that we ordered them twice. They were juicy, perfectly seasoned, and easily the best value on the menu. The General Tso's chicken had good flavor, but the batter was a bit too thick, making it overly crunchy with not much chicken inside, so it wasn't my favorite. We also ordered the sizzling beef platter; while it tasted fine, the portion didn't quite match what was advertised in the menu photo, which was a bit underwhelming. In terms of the service it was okay, they definitely need more waitstaff as the restaurant was busy and they were running around so it was hard to grab their attention. The ambiance was okay as well not a fine dining establishment by any means but the food definitely makes up for it. The restroom was also very cold with no heat but clean. On a freezing Friday evening in St. Marks, Jiang's Kitchen fed our large group of 8 pretty fast and served us the most authentically-flavored Chinese halal food. I would give 6 stars if I could! We ordered an assortment of dishes from hot and sour cucumber [5/5], sauteed cumin lamb [6/5 - would highly recommend], diced chicken with hot peppers [6/5], baked buns topped with lamb ribs [6/5], and a couple more that I can't remember. I mean it when I say that all 8 of us were thoroughly impressed by the meal and enjoyed every single dish. Although all the dishes border on the saltier side, that's my taste preference so I thought they were seasoned perfectly. The dishes at Jiang's walk the perfect line between spicy and flavorful. Everything we ate had the taste of authentic Chinese cuisine. By the time we finished our meal at 8PM, the restaurant was completely full and had a line out the door. I had Lamb Shumai, Hot and Sour Cucumbers, Wood Ear Mushrooms with Chinese Vinegar and Chili Oil, Hand-rolled Noodles with Spiced Minced Beef, Salt and Pepper Jumbo Shrimp, Xinjiang Big Plate Chicken with Noodles, Sautéed Noodles with Cumin Lamb, and Sautéed Vegetables with Rice Cake. Generally, the food was quite good. The stand out dishes were the Salt & Pepper Shrimp, Hand-rolled Noodles with Spicy Minced Beef, and the Sautéed Noodles with Cumin Lamb. Clearly cumin lamb is the house specialty and I would advise ordering more of that, such as the lamb ribs or other lamb dishes. The hand-rolled noodles are excellent, as are the rice noodles. I would avoid the rice cake, but that is a matter of taste. I found the Big Plate Chicken to be tasty on top of the included flat noodles, but a little dry and not as good as the lamb. I've been meaning to come here for a while because I love big plate chicken and there aren't a lot of Chinese restaurants in the city that I know of that do it (other than Spicy Village in Chinatown). I also love northwestern Chinese food and cumin lamb and wish there were more places like this in Manhattan. Many dishes are rich in cumin flavor and were inspired by Uyghur and Mongolian cultures. Considering it was our first time here and not being too familiar with Northern Chinese cuisine, it would've been great if the waiter explained the menu a bit to us and told us what the highlights or popular items were. He only came by once we were ready to order and drop off food. The Wood Ear Mushrooms had a very punchy flavor - it was citrusy and gingery which was a nice contrast from everything else we ordered. The Steamed Beef Shumai were a great try because it's rare to find halal shumai in NYC. The beef filling was nicely seasoned but the dumpling wrapper definitely needed to be steamed for another 1-2 minutes as the top was dry and hard making it less enjoyable to eat. I enjoyed the Sizzling Rice with Beef - it's very cumin and onion forward but savory and satisfying nonetheless. When the Sautéed Lamb with Cumin entree came out, it literally looked like a larger version of the Sizzling Rice we got. Had I known that, I would've just gotten 2 orders of that with beef and lamb for ~$18 less. I will say of the two, the lamb is the superior choice. Moving on, I never knew you can mess up General Tso's Chicken until now. Don't get me wrong, it was beautifully crisp, nicely coated with sauce, but it's almost entirely breading. There is barely any actual chicken in each bite. I was extremely disappointed by that. I love supporting Muslim-owned/run businesses and I really wanted to like Jiang's Kitchen but I left wanting more and with my craving of good Chinese food unsatisfied. Didn't know a halal hotpot restaurant exists in Manhattan. You have to ask for the hotpot menu, otherwise, you'll get the regular menu. The min order for hotpot is $50 & it's not all you can eat. This place is also closed from 3:30-5 on weekdays. Anyway, we got steamed beef shumai (6pcs for $10) & sizzling beef rice ($16). The shumai is scalding hot, so beware unless you want a burnt tongue. This is basically like xiao long bao btw. It's good, I liked the flavor. The sizzling rice with beef has a very strong cumin smell, meaning it smells like armpit. Once you get over the smell, the beef is actually pretty good. It's flavorful. I just wish it had less onion & more beef. The beef to onion ratio is off. It was mostly onion with rice. read more

Located on St. Marks but not in the popular section between 2nd and 3rd, this is an excellent Northern Halal Chinese spot specializing in Xinjiang/Uyghur style food with a few dishes from other parts and a few Shaokao/BBQ skewers. I've been here twice with a group and both times we shared a bunch of dishes having lamb mostly. The food is well flavored with plenty of cumin of course. In terms of hot meat appetizers, the best of the bunch is the Lamb Shumai. They are plump and super juicy with plenty of meat inside. They come with 6 per order and they have the usual slightly sour sauce with them. Also tasty are the Lamb Buns which is the Uyghur version of samsa; a meat filled bun found all across Central Asia. The crust is a little bit different than samsa being almost more buttery and thicker but still tasty. Just like with them, there is plenty of meat along with a bit of cumin though I would say that they aren't as juicy as there aren't enough onions compared to some other spots such as Farida's. I would still recommend them though as they are still tasty and worth the price but the shumai are better. For vegetarian dishes, the Hot + Sour Cucumbers are tasty. The sauce has a nice sourness and a hint of heat with a good amount of garlic. If you like them from Szechuan places, you'll like it here. In terms of other veggies, we have also got the Shredded Sour Cabbage. The portion size was nice and similar to the cucumbers, they were lightly pickled and went well with the rest of the food. The Sizzling Glass Noodles With Cabbage is a slightly more filling version of the prior dish with a new texture from the noodles and were also tasty and would be a filling vegetarian dish. The Sauteed Shanghai Bok Choy was probably my least favorite of the vegetarian dishes being just a little bit too bland but the portion size was decent. For larger plates, the BBQ Lamb Ribs are the most expensive thing here but for good reason. The dish comes with plenty of large very meaty lamb ribs and is good for sharing. Otherwise on the plate, there's some chili powder, cumin, and salt for dipping as well as some pita on top of some lettuce. The meat falls off the bone and is extremely well flavored and I think 2/3 could share this along with another dish or two and leave happy. The Xinjiang Big Plate Chicken/Dapanji is also very tasty. This is available both in a smaller and larger size as well as with or without bone. The meat was slightly sweet with a good amount of cumin like most dishes and the potatoes in there were delicious as well having soaked up the same sauce. The only complaint compared to some other spots would be the noodles on the bottom which were fine but lacked some of the chewiness but this is a really solid version overall and an absolutely massive portion size. There have been a few other main dishes we have ordered such as the Fried Hand Rolled Noodles With Spicy Minced Beef from the northern noodle specialties section. Compared to the noodles in the other dish, these had a much better texture having good chewiness. There was plenty of beef on top but it could have been a bit spicier but the portion size again was good and the flavor was very tasty and I would recommend it overall. There was also one of the signatures, the Crispy Cumin Pancake With Lamb which was tasty. The lamb again was tender and the crispy pancake consisted of chunks of lightly fried bread with a good amount of cumin of course on top. Finally, the Sizzling Rice With Cumin Lamb was also tasty though I preferred the other dishes as I liked the texture more from the bread and noodles compared to the sizzling rice but again it was solid. In short, there are a couple definite standouts such as the excellent shumai and the food in general is just good. Nothing really felt like a throwaway which is rare for a menu this size. I'll go back here again either by myself or with a group to share more of their tasty menu. I can imagine them being quite more crowded if they were a block away but at least their location means I can always stop in here and get some excellent northern Chinese grub. I liked the ability to combine various noodle types with different sauces. The tomato sauce and traditional sauce had distinct and interesting flavor profiles. My friends and I decided to stop by here around 2 pm on a Friday - the place itself is super spacious but I believe it does get busier during the night time. You can make a reservation in advance if you do have a large group and plan to come during dinner time. One of my friends does eat halal and this place has been on her list for a while so we decided to come here. We decided to go with the hot pot option - you do have to ask for the menu separately. The hotpot menu does come with a $50 minimum. I will say the hot pot menu is really small - they have a limited amount of veggies and meat. The meat was really fresh though. We decided to get the split pot of clear soup and spicy soup. The spicy soup was quite delicious if you like to eat spicy foods. The clear soup was really lacking in flavor though. You also have to pay for sauce which I was not expecting since I'm use to going to the AYCE type of hot pot. We also ordered the lamb siu mai - this was actually flavorful and delicious. I think that next time I would want to come back for their other dishes - their noodle and rice dishes looked and smelled amazing. I did not think that the hot pot was worth it though - I would prefer to go to AYCE hot pot instead. read more

I really wanted to love this spot. Halal hotpot is so hard to find !! Unfortunately their hotpot has very limited options. I was able to get my usual sliced lamb and fatty beef which was great but the vegetables were very limits. No corn, broccoli, bock choy, enoki mushrooms or udon noodles. They did have vermicelli noodles which wasn't bad but not preferred for hotpot. Felt like all I ate was meat and potatoes which didn't do much to satisfy the hotpot craving. What I also didn't like is the options for the sauce. You pay an extra $5 for a few sauces. It wasn't the usual hot pot sauces. No hoisin, fish sauce, soy sauce or even siracha. Like I previously stated the hotpot options here were very limited and not as enjoyable. The general tsao chicken wasn't bad. The portion was nicely sized. I chose the Northwest dishes selection, where I had Rice noodles with traditional sauce, beef as protein, and a medium level of spice. A solid find for quality halal Chinese food in the city. We got the lamb dumplings and sizzling beef on my first trip. The dumplings were steamed just right and the meat inside was cooked and seasoned very well, I would come back again just for the dumplings 10/10. The beef was impressive in presentation with the sizzling, in terms of taste it was a 7/10. Although not pictured, I got the general tso chicken, lamb and beef skewers, and stir fried noodles on my next visit. The lamb skewers were seasoned so well and very tender, I could taste the cumin distinctly, could have ate an entire skewer myself honestly. Full disclosure - I love lamb. And when lamb is cooked really well, it is a culinary treat like no other. Now, if you love lamb and you haven't been to Jiang's to try their Barbecued lamb ribs, then you don't know what you don't know. Arriving on a large, rectangular stone plate, the deep brown lamb skin is lightly crisped and the mouth-watering aromas are unlike any other. Pick up a rib and you can feel the meat quietly trying to slide off the bone. One sumptuous bite and you can taste the artisanal preparation that went into this elevated meat dish. Presented with three finishing spices - an orange spicy salt, a savory cumin rub, and white table salt - you can customize the flavor profile of each rib. Trust me, while its not inexpensive, and you will have to wait 20 minutes for it to arrive at the table, this is fine food. The lamb, albeit the star of the menu, is not the only great dish at Jiang's. The Cumin Beef with rice is served on a sizzling platter. The combination of cubed beef, diced onion and a generous serving of perfectly steamed rice all in a delicious cumin sauce make for a great accompaniment, or alternative to, the aforementioned BBQ lamb. Another must-try at Jiang's is the Hot and Sour Cucumber appetizer. Unlike standard preparations, which rely more on sesame oil and rice vinegar, Jiang's offers a much more robust, reddish sauce where the flavors explode with every bite. Whenever I'm near the East Village, I make it a point to stop at Jiang's for a great meal. I know Jiang's is a cult favorite for those in the know, and I'm sorry for publicizing their outstanding food, but I felt compelled to share. Enjoy! read more

We got the siu mai (which were more like soup dumplings without the soup), the hand rolled noodles with beef, the lamb cumin, and the crispy chicken dish. Everything was out of this world, mainly the entrees but even the dumplings had a different taste than normal Chinese dumplings. You could taste an extra hint of spice and a kick from them.
