Shocked at the 3.7/5. Like are people just that picky now? Also let's clear something else. This place is no longer a Michelin Star holder. It WAS one of the first Malay restaurants in NYC to be awarded the same. Let's talk about the place- it's small, cute and vibey. I personally loved it. The food ? For context we ordered the Tandoori Satay, roti Canai , Martabak, pad kra Gai, Mee Goreng & laksa. Each dish was delicious and authentic in my experience. Service was attentive. No pork on the menu. Will definitely go back !
Visited this place while visiting some friends. We made a reservation and were seated quickly when we arrived. The restaurant was small, cute, and clean! My favorite dish was the Roti and the Curry. For me personally, I thought the noodles and rice dishes had too similar flavor, so I would choose just one of those next time. I also recommend using the InKind app for additional discounts on your first meal!
Stopped in for lunch, and it was a cute little spot near Union Square, just off the subway. We ordered off the lunch menu and the regular menu, and enjoyed the chicken satay, beef Rendang and Hakka crispy chicken. There was so much food! There were lots of people in for a Monday, so service was slow but steady. No issues on our end. Absolutely enjoyed and would recommend!
Really good food here that's kind of on the expensive side but it's pretty big. The roti with curry was extremely delicious. Roti was flakey and the sauce was spicy and yummy although a big runny. However the curry laksa was also yummy and I loved the egg noodles. The flavor was unfortunately a bit lackluster compared to the curry sauce with the roti. And the tofu had a strange aroma to me. But everything was fresh and the service was good as well. The coconut water was refreshing and delicious too.
This place was overall very delicious and I would definitely come again. It's a fusion restaurant with many options. One thing though, would definitely make a reservation. We made a reservation and it was very crowded. We arrived early and it still took us 20 minutes to be seated. The curry roti and mi goreng were flavorful with layered spices. I would recommend these dishes and would get it again. The curry laksa wasn't really what I expected and the noodles got soggy quickly. That might've been my mistake getting the wrong noodles. Vibes of the restaurant were nice, dark and dim lit. I did feel that it was a bit cramped and people sitting next to us kept knocking into us and almost knocked over our dish.
Solid food but nothing amazes me. I think it is good if you are craving Malaysian/Thai food. The price is reasonable. Everything is well seasoned. The fish dish has a sweet and sour sauce. The noodle is very Thai. Roti canai is good with flaky crepe and the curry has a little kick to it.
Anthony Bourdain's dish was super spicy to me and I sort of regret getting it. It had a wonderful mix of flavors that I haven't really tried before - tangy and spicy. If I could tolerate the spice better I would've probably liked it just as much. The skewers were really good as were the roti canai. The coconut dessert was also really good, probably my favorite especially after I had such a spicy main dish, but I wish I was able to get a metal spoon to scrape out the insides of the coconut so that I could get at the meat. Everything came out pretty quickly. Don't really understand why people were so tough on this place - solid food and nice service. Not super difficult to get reservations either, so long as you book in advance.
We made a reservation for weeknight dinner right when the restaurant opened at 5PM because that was the only reservation available for the day. There was no one else there so it seems like most of the seating is reserved for walk-in customers. The restaurant decor and art on the walls are very vibrant and I liked the long, golden table. We had the roti canai, pineapple fried rice, and the curry laksa. Everything was good and the portion sizes were decent as we were not too hungry. Both the roti canai and the laksa had strong coconut milk flavor. Overall, Laut is a vibrant restaurant I would come back to for a casual dinner or small group meal!
Had a reservation for 5 on a friday at 6:15 PM. It was quite busy in the restaurant and a little bit loud, so it was a but difficult to hear each other without shouting, but the food came out very quickly. We ordered the papaya salad, roti canai, and the satay ayam for appetizers. We also ordered the curry laksa with chicken and thin egg noodles and the nasi lemak for our main dishes. We found this to be just enough food for all of us. My favorite bite was definitely the satay. The chicken was incredibly tender, and the peanut sauce was delicious. Other members of my party also really liked the roti canai. It was good, but I think I've had better versions of the dish elsewhere. I found the nasi lemak to be very unique, and I liked the flavors in the sweet coconut rice. It felt a bit disjoint, but the textures worked well together. The papaya salad and the curry laksa were also decent, but not as memorable. Overall, it was a decent malaysian meal, but a bit on the pricey side.
This review is coming from a Malaysian so maybe a bit harsher.. but it was ok. Definitely didn't feel Michelin worthy and not special. I don't think I'd come again tbh, but ofc had to try while I was in the city. Maybe we got the wrong things? Teh Tarik martini (4/5): good concept but nothing crazy. Gin was def prominent Chicken satay (4/5): didn't like how they put the peanut sauce on the satay for you but overall flavor was good, chicken was tender and probably the best dish. Nasi lemak (3/5): so mid. rice was fragrant and love the fried peanuts/anchovies but everything else was meh. Curry laksa (2/5): biggest let down and everyone else said it was good. The soup had a strange taste to it (I'm not usually picky like that) but we couldn't finish it and it was lukewarm when we got it. Ambiance was fun and service was decent but overall it was so so. I'd go back to the smaller mom and pops for Malaysian food.
Came here for girls night. Highly recommended making a reservation. Friendly staff and small restaurant. It felt very cramped inside. We ordered drinks and a bunch of appetizers. The food came out before the drinks did. We felt very rushed throughout the whole meal. Most of the food was just okay. It was quite an expensive meal. The standouts were the chicken satay, the peanut sauce was amazing. The soft shell crab had good flavor but we wish they were meatier. The drunken noodles had a nice kick to it. The laksa was our least favorite. We've definitely had better at a much cheaper price point. Overall we enjoyed the meal but not sure we would make another trip out to the city for it. The duck curry was surprisingly a huge potion.
We made a reservation in advance for lunch here on a Friday and I'm so glad we did, because it was packed! It's fairly spacious inside, and I never felt like we were too cramped. Our server was friendly, and the food came out at a decent speed. We shared a few dishes among our party of three, and since it was lunch, we all got spring rolls and cups of soup before the entrées came. We ordered: - Nasi Lemak - this was quite good and came with both chicken and shrimp. - Indo Nasi Goreng - this one was not as good as the others, but not bad. I liked the fried egg on top. - Curry Laksa with flat rice noodles - I really liked the noodles (very wide and flat) and we also got this with tofu and vegetables, which all tasted so good with this dish!
Laut's menu spans southeast asian cuisines. My friend has been there a few times, so we went with her top recommended dishes. The place was packed even on a weekday evening. Just a heads-up it's pretty loud inside, and the tables are pretty close together. The prices are definitely on the higher side so come prepared for an elevated malaysian meal. ＊Satay Chicken $16/4pcs ** This isn't your regular satay chicken skewer because the peanut sauce is next level! So rich, nutty, and savory, with even more crunch from crushed peanuts on top. ＊Roti Canai $11 Flaky yet pillowy, served with a vegan curry sauce. The curry was a bit watery, but still paired nicely with the roti. ＊Ultimate Curry Laksa with Mixed Seafood $28** The broth was SO GOOD we couldn't stop sipping it! We went with the recommended egg noodles. Chewy, bouncy, and perfect for soaking up the broth. You can choose different proteins, and we picked mixed seafood which came with shrimp and squid. ＊Nasi Lemak $30 Of course I had to try the malaysian national dish here. The coconut rice is lowkey addictive, especially with the rendang curry chicken. Though the portion felt a bit small for the price. We only got 3-4 small pieces of chicken. Worth noting it's cheaper ($25) during lunch. ＊Coconut Pudding $16 A light dessert after a rich meal. I was surprised it comes in a whole coconut! The silky, jiggly coconut jelly was fun to scoop straight from the shell, but nothing impressive flavor-wise. ＊Teh Tarik (Pulled Tea) $8 ＊Sweet Thai Iced Tea $8 Both were very sweet and pretty strong on caffeine. I definitely felt it later and it kept me up all night...I preferred the malaysian pulled tea over the thai iced tea.

I love the food over at Laut! I first heard about Laut from the curry laksa dish so I've been interested in this restaurant since. I also had the roti canai, satay chicken, and basil fried rice. I like the satay chicken and didn't find it to be dry. The peanut really made it stood out! I loved the roti canai as well! I like the curry that came with it, but I did wish that it came with more things though such as chicken or potatoes. I also loved both of my entrees but the curry laksa is definitely one of my favorite curry dishes I've ever had! read more

I came here with a group of 9 people for lunch. Service was great, food came really quickly but I also think it wasn't too busy for lunch either. We started with the satay and papaya salad. I would skip out on the satay, it was a bit dry and normally it comes with a sauce but they said their dish does not come with a dipping sauce. We also ordered the roti and interestingly, it was more like a roti pancake that had filling inside. Not what we were expecting but it was pretty decent. Now the stars of the show definitely was their noodles and rice dishes! We ordered the char kway teow and drunkin noodles. Both were super flavorful! We also ordered the tom yum noodles and the Anthony bourdain's recommended laksa noodles. For the tom yum noodles, we chose the big flat noodles and those were really fun to eat. Tom yum was flavored well so no surprises there. But the laksa noodles, these are a must get!! A much thicker broth, a little sweet, a little tart and a little spicy. Big bold flavors, I really enjoyed this noodle a lot and have never tried anything like it anywhere else. Another must get the indo mi goreng, a really good fried rice to switch out the different textures compared to the noodles. I would skip out on the Hainan chicken because it didn't really taste like Hainan chicken. The essence of the dish was missing like your scallion and ginger. Laut manages the rare feat of feeling both like a trip home and a night out. The staff here couldn't be warmer--welcoming in a way that immediately puts you at ease. The atmosphere walks a fine line: touches of Malaysian street-food charm, yet set in an environment polished enough for a proper evening out in the city. I ordered the curry laksa, which holds a permanent spot on my list of all-time favorite dishes. It did not disappoint. Rich, aromatic broth, perfectly cooked noodles, and a balance of flavors that had me nearly scraping the bowl clean. My Malaysian mother would have been proud--though, to be fair, she would've preferred an extra hit of spice. Still, the essence of home was unmistakable. Yes, the prices lean higher than what you'd expect to pay for Malaysian food, but that's the exchange for finding such authentic comfort right in the heart of NYC. For me, it was worth every penny. This is one of those rare places where the food, the service, and the atmosphere all conspire to transport you--if only for a meal--thousands of miles away. This was disgusting display for take out and I have done dine before so I was shocked by the quality. Unfortunately I won't be returning or trying the Indian restaurant across the street ... My street noodles had 2 types noodles ? Flat noodles and lo mein noodles! Maybe I read that wrong ? They were exceptionally greasy and was just barf. The roti was decent and the curry was lovely but that won't bring me back. read more

This place was insanely cool! I came in for dinner with two friends and while there were only a few items on the menu that were vegan - they were delicious! We got roti canai, Curry Laksa, Coconut Shrimp(?), and Our server had great recommendations. The place itself is very popular it seems, so it's best to get a reservation. It can also get quite loud and seems popular for celebrations. That night we saw 2 birthdays - and let me tell you the way they celebrate is so cute. I'll leave that one a surprise. read more
One of my favorite dinner spots! I love Laut and it's one of my go-to spots! Let us with family or with friends, can always be assured that the food and drinks and service will be of the highest quality! The cocktails are amazing and the menu changes slightly each year but most of the drinks and food options are constant. Food- my go to is roti canai, the satay, laksa curry and the spicy crab curry (this one is my absolutely favorite). These are 4 dishes I ordered each time we go in addition to their other appetizers and main course! Please do also try their amazing noodles and rice dishes in addition to their signature specials! The food was really flavorful. Went for the chilli thai crab, but not only was it a little on the sweet side, also wasnt presented as a whole crab, was sort of deepfried and broken into pieces. The drunken noodle with tofu is the best i've had so far. The beef rendang was yummy, but the curry/sauce was a little too cinnamon heavy, and meat was too fatty. The nasi lemak with shrimp was pretty good. The curry for the roti canai was the best, the flavors were balanced, and it was well seasoned. The teh tarik cold chai drink was pretty good, not too sweet. The ambience was ok, our particular service staff was cordial. Heres where they lost the stars. We had a reservation for 6pm, we were not seated until 7pm. There was a birthday party when we went, which they seemed to give more attention and preference to. That party clearly overstayed their time, but the restaurant was in no rush to seat the 20or so ppl that had accumulated at the narrow entrance, all waiting to be seated for their reserved time. Honestly it's pretty hard finding amazing Malaysian food in NYC, especially after going to Malaysia recently, but this place wasn't bad. The nyonya fries were amazing, fried perfectly and seasoned so well--and the dip that came with it adding a more salty/umami profile that really complimented the fries. 6/5 stars. The roti canai was disappointing and just not right. Roti is supposed to be soft, fluffy, and slightly flakey, but the one here was packed flat and kind of dense with no dimension. The ultimate curry laksa was pretty good. The ones I've had in Malaysia were incredibly creamy and spicy (can be a bit overwhelming sometimes), and the one here is a pretty mild version. It's not spicy at all, to me, but still creamy and flavorful. 4/5. Would come again for the fries, laksa, and to try the other appetizers. But I would skip the roti. read more

We actually stumbled onto this restaurant by accident. It was late and almost closing time, but they still welcomed us in. First time trying Malaysian food and it did not disappoint! Every dish was flavorful and delicious. The restaurant has a warm, welcoming ambience, and we enjoyed trying a variety of dishes--all of which were great. Our waitress was very helpful in guiding us with the ordering, which made the experience even better. read more

This was our first dinner out during our trip to NYC, and since we love Malaysian food, Laut was our preferred choice. We ordered several dishes: papaya salad, roti canai, curry laksa, pad see ew, and chili crab. Everything so delicious! The roti canai was soft, chewy, and slightly sweet, and the curry sauce on the side was flavorful. The papaya salad was fresh and had a nice balance of sweet and sour flavors. The pad see ew came in a cool stainless steel wok and was packed with flavor. The chili crab was the highlight! It was sweet, tangy, and just the right amount of spicy. The crab pieces were crispy and super tasty, and the sauce was so good that we made sure to soak up every last bit with the fried bread and steamed rice. On top of the great food, we liked the vibe, and our waitress was friendly and attentive. If we visit NYC again, we'll definitely be back to try more dishes! read more

I really enjoyed my meal at Laut! I went with a group of 5 with a reservation and was seated shortly after my time. Everything was so flavorful and I didn't want to stop eating. We started with the roti canai, the roti was so crispy and soft in the best way and amazing with the sauce and pickled onions. The noodles were the perfect texture, and the soft shelled crab had a great sweet and slightly spicy sauce. I really enjoyed the steamed buns as well. Everything on the Nasi Lemak was very tasty and a great variety. I am definitely coming back! read more
Super cute restaurant with flavorful food, I ordered the sambal belacan and it was great! Lots of flavors and just the right amount of meat, and the coconut rice was perfect. I also had some of the calamari, and the seasoning on top was SO GOOD. We also split the mango sticky rice which was alright, though I would probably pass on it if I came back. Recapturing my trip from Singapore with their signature chili crab dish. This soft shell crab was exact in texture as I remembered when going to the country's crab restaurants. You can't enjoy this dish without expecting a big kick from it. I had this with the coconut rice and it was a nice fusion of sweet and savory. Even their bok choy dishes were cooked right with that veggie crunch. This place has been on my list since my trip there and I would love to come back to try their other appetizers on an empty stomach. Because once you finish the signature crab off their checklist, gotta make room for the others to capture the Hakka style essence. Service was really good here and very attentive. My hostess and I also connected about board games too because this meal was prep before hopping to the board games too cafe not to far. We were able to make a same day reservation. The restaurant is casually decorated, the tables very close together, and it was busy when we arrived. The service was fast. We were in and out shockingly quickly because the food came quickly and it felt a bit rushed. I got the Masak Asam Pedas which is a classic malaysian clay pot soup with tamarind broth infused with ginger flower, laksa leaf, and turmeric, and it also came with rice. I thought the flavor was unique, and it was definitely a bit spicy. I'm not a huge spice person and most of the items here were spicy. The portion was small for the price. read more
What a meal! I was late to my reservation and ended up having to wait 10 minutes for a table to be available - not an issue, was my fault! They were very nice about me being late ... just call them if you're running behind! My partner and I shared a couple things : nasi lemak and the asam laksa. Seemed like these were popular dishes so we decided to try them. Both were amazing! The soup was spicy and tangy at the same time. If you're sick, this will clear your sinus! The nasi lemak was really good, so flavorful, had different textures, and the coconut rice with it was yummy!! It's a cute little place and it seems like they recently renovated. SERVICE - located in the flatiron district very close to union square park - recommend making a reservation ahead of time, even on seemingly off days - small lobby waiting area - dimly lit interior decor provides a more intimate ambiance - good for groups of 4 or less people - service is very quick - QR code menu only MENU - malaysian inspired selection of appetizers and entrees - vegan options available - slightly pricey ($21 per entree) FOOD - vegan curry laksa (8/10): spicy coconut milk broth with choice of noodles, fried tofu puffs, soft tofu, broccoli, and snap peas. I went with the wide rice noodles, but you can also get thin rice noodles which may have been a better option since mine stuck together. The broth is very flavorful and comforting, perfect for a chilly winter day. The spice is not overpowering which is nice. I would have liked the broccoli to be cooked as it felt like it was just put in the dish raw. I also would have liked there to be more variety of vegetables, perhaps some mushrooms or add umami flavor. The best part was the tofu puffs which soak up the broth and are like little gems at the end of the meal. WOULD I GO BACK? Yes! Ummmmmm please make time to go! It is a hole in the wall kinda spot but every dish you get is delicious and taste different from the one you ordered. From the chicken skewers, roti cani with the veg curry (which straight up tastes like chicken curry without the chicken), the crab legs to the perfectly spiced drunken noodles...it was absolutely worth the 8:30pm booking. Nasi lemak 1/5. Not authentic, not good, and very few quality ingredients despite being $30. No otah, crispy chicken, sambal chilli, fish cake, grilled mackerel, and sunny side fried egg. Very little ikan bilis. Curry veg was not curry at all but sweet. If you were going to charge that much, at least chip in relatively cheap ingredients listed above. Very disappointing. Overall rating: 4.7 Price: $13 on HH w/ tip I walked by looking for a happy hour & stopped by without a reservation. Had to sit by the bar which was a very tight squeeze if you were shopping before. The bartender was very nice & I just got a mojito. It was very good! The food looked delicious. Definitely want to come back and try the food with a friend at a table! This place has been on my list for YEARS I'm so happy I finally got to try it; and for good reason, it's one of the top meals I've had in the city. We didn't have a reservation but were able to slide in at 6pm on a Sunday for 2 people. The roti with eggs inside was really good with the sauce. But the famous Rendang curry quickly overpowered the roti with its intense flavors of exquisite spices paired with a rich coconut flavor over basmati rice. The sauce alone I would lock up in a jar and save it forever. I can't really even explain the flavor profile but it was warm and I couldn't get enough. We went with the chicken with was really just a protein vessel for the sauce and rice. I'm sure it would be good with any protein. The inside had a nicer vibe but we went after a workout class and were fine in our casual attire. It had an upscale yet casual decor with the street style signs hanging around against the gold wall art. We were seated with a one hour warning so we felt a bit rushed eating our food quickly but other than that it was attentive friendly service. read more

It's quite a small restaurant and it's hard to get a table but I'm so glad my friends and I were able to! Starting off, the service was pretty good, the wait staff was very attentive and friendly and did a good job managing the completely full restaurant. We shared the Roti Canai, baby bok choy stir fry with garlic sauce, and the curry laksa noodle soup with thin egg noodles! Not much to say about the roti canai or the bok choy stir fry- they were both good but nothing crazy. I was really excited to try the curry laksa noodle soup, especially since I saw it on Buzzfeed Worth It, and it honestly did live up to the hype! The broth was rich and super savory, unlike anything I've had before. We chose the thin egg noodles but perhaps the normal egg noodles or some other choice would've been better- they offered rice noodles, flat noodles, and two thickness levels of egg noodles. (I'd like to note that the picture I included of the curry laksa noodle soup was taken after I already dished out some of it to my friends, so the bowl would look more full initially lol). Regardless, still amazing, and the three dishes we got were pretty filling for a party of 3! I'd love to come back sometime to try their other dishes too. read more

The best things we ate here were the roti canai, tandoori chicken satay, the beef rendang (just like grandma's), and the soft shell chili crab. The hainanese roasted chicken was dry, but the rice was flavorful. The broth was heavily flavored with pandan. For $78, the chicken should be better. The laksa was ok. I wasn't fan of the type of rice noodles. I was hoping it would be a thicker round or flat rice noodle that is chewier. There also wasn't any lime or sambal to add to it. The squid was nicely poached in the soup though. The green curry was ok as well. I was hoping for a little more herbal and pepper flavor, but it was overpowered by the coconut cream. When people celebrate a birthday, the lights turn all the way down and a recording of happy birthday plays while half the restaurant claps. Otherwise the restaurant is medium loud. It's a little hard to hear your table mates. This is a personal pet peeve: servers cleared dishes before we were done. read more
The spicy night market noodles single handedly earned this place its 5 stars. I would give those noodles a 1000 stars if I could. When I think of delicious spicy flavorful noodles, this is what I think of. They were just an explosion of flavor in the bestest way possible. By far one of the best noodle dishes I've eaten in my entire life. The roti canai was also perfect. The roti was melt in your mouth, crispy layers that was just what I wanted. Both the laksas were sadly very underwhelming. The Asam laksa might just not have been my taste because I didn't enjoy it at all. It was very tangy, a little too painfully tangy and very very lemony. I think it was just not the right flavor profile for me unfortunately. The curry laksa on the other hand was a lot more promising - the coconut broth base was quite creamy and had a lovely base flavor. But I just wish it had some more of a complex flavor profile, it was a little too simple for me, I expected something with more flavor honestly. The place is super cool though, loved the decor! Came here for lunch. Great basil fried rice (def our fav dish) and the chicken satay had an overly sweet sauce but was cooked tenderly. The complimentary egg rolls and soup with the lunch special m were not worth eating. I was not a fan of the sambal chicken either. read more
the lunch special here doesnt really feel like a lunch special cost wise and the quality / portion doesn't stand out enough to make up for that cost. the soup and spring rolls that came with were not memorable at all. I got the nasi lemak for $25 and it was solid but not good enough that i would order again which I maybe expected because of all the signs on the walls reminding me nasi lemak is the national dish of malaysia. ive had nasi lemak in singapore thats more memorable. coconut rice was good but not sure about the other parts of the dish here. this restaurant will probably always be pretty busy because of their location and history. read more
