I cant believe I'm only now writing a review of Lavash. I've been going to this establishment an average of 1-2 times/month since they reopened a few years ago. The food is amazing. The staff is friendly. There is a magical outdoor parklet with string lights and great music (think Ella Fitzgerald) with the cutest little "flower room" that you can sit in. I bring all my guests here, both locals and tourists, and Lavash never disappoints. It's the culinary highlight of the trip every time. It's family-owned and the owners are so lovely. A note in case anyone searches the word "gluten" or "celiac" on Yelp, my friend has Celiac Disease (the REAL kind...not the made-up one people do for attention), and he has never been cross-contsminated at this place. They take it very seriously, so please know that you're safe here. If you have Celiac Disease, you obviously know what not to order (i.e., lavash bread), but just let them know and you won't have so much as a cramp after eating here. read more

I have been dying to try some good Persian food and went here with my roommate, who is Persian, and some other friends. We let my roommate order all of the food for us because she knew all the good stuff. We ordered Sabzi panir, yogurt salad, tahdig with ghormeh sabzi, zereshk polo, shashlik, and the taste of persia. Ok listen... everything was incredible!!! The sabzi panir was given to us complimentary and was a refreshing assortment of herbs and veggies which I ate with the yogurt salad that we ordered. The yogurt salad tasted like greek yogurt mixed with garlic and herbs. I do wish that it was a little more garlicky but still, it tasted great. Tahdig is one of my fav persian dishes, put simply it is crispy rice. And we had it served with ghormeh sabzi which was a tangy stew with herbs and beans. This has such unique flavor, I cannot even describe it but I would highly recommend trying it. Ok, onto the meat dishes... the zereshk polo was some of the least dry chicken that I've ever tasted, and the barberries that accompanied it were addicting to eat. Shashlik was a beautiful lamb dish that was actually seasoned to perfection. I think it's the saffron that really does it. I wish it was a little bit less well done, but in any case it was delicious. And lastly, the taste of persia was WOW. It's the perfect sample of meats and I think one of my favorites was the koobideh which is a mixture of ground beef and lamb. Anyways, we didn't stop there and got dessert as well. We tried baghlava which is similar to Baklava in other middle eastern cuisines. It was good, pretty standard but what blew me away was the Makhloot. I don't think I've ever tasted anything like it. This persian style gelato was sweet and tart and had a really good balance of rose water and lime... I know, sounds strange but it works SO well. Lavash serves a refined take on Persian food and is one of the few places in SF to offer this cuisine. We started with the Sabzi Panir, an abundant plate with lavash flatbread squares, sliced Persian cucumbers, sliced tomatoes, grapes, walnuts, blocks of feta cheese, and a mountain of herbs. The little squares of lavash were perfect for making little wraps with all the other ingredients, which were fresh and delicious. We continued with two dips, which also went nicely with the lavash: the Borani, or yogurt mixed with roasted spinach, garlic, and onions, topped with walnuts and saffron; and the Kashk-e-Bademjan, a warm purée of roasted eggplant, garnished with yogurt, sautéed onion, roasted black garlic, mint, and saffron. My favorite dish was the tahdig, made of layers of insanely crispy saffron rice topped with a choice of khoresh (stew). We tried both the Fesenjan, a sweet and sour ground walnut and pomegranate stew with chicken; and the Ghourmeh Sabzi, made of chunks of beef stewed with red kidney beans, herbs, and dried lime. Both the stews were delicious, but the best part was definitely the crispy rice, and ordering the tahdig was a great way to try smaller portions of the stews without having to order the whole entrees. Finally, we had the Taste of Persia, a combination plate of kebabs for two people. This platter came with a skewer each of barg (sliced beef fillet), joojeh (chicken breast and thigh chunks), koobideh (ground beef and lamb), and vegetables (bell pepper, zucchini, onion, tomato), all served with two plates of saffron basmati rice. The skewers were a bit over-charred but were flavorful and tasty nonetheless. Best Persian food! Good price too. I'd keep ordering the salmon dish and it was done perfectly every time: broiled on the outside and soft but fully cooked inside. Sorry no picture because I ate half of the dish before I remembered about taking picture. Oh well! Our server was very nice, showing up whenever we needed help but did not hover. This place always hits the spot. I love the lavash because unlike most mediterranean/persian places with "thick" pita bread, the lavash is thin and it allows for more room in your stomach! We ordered: - KashK-e Bademjan: Roasted eggplant dish with so much flavor, the roasted garlic really was the cherry on top because it went really well with the eggplant. Also the yogurt helped to balance the flavor out really well. - Lavash Special for 2: Came with joojeh which is their chicken skewer, koobideh which is there beef and lamb skewer, vegetable skewer, and Shishlik which were 2 lamb chops that were super flavorful. The chicken was super moist and flavorful, but the koobideh was probably the best thing I tasted there! It was not too salty, flavored well, the meat was extremely tender as well. Oh. My. Gosh. This place was AMAZING. The hype around this resto is so real. The dishes we had were so delicious we haven't stopped thinking about it. The interior is well designed and beautiful. The wait staff is so friendly and helpful when giving recommendations. The dishes we got were more than enough for two of us (though we ended up finishing everything bc it was too good ). The kookoo sabzi was sooooo delicious with the mast-o musir (we asked for the name of the labneh dip bc we NEEDED more!!!!!!!). We also shared the combo plate with chicken, beef, and lamb. Oh man was that meat platter crazy. All the meat was so well seasoned and juicy AF. My bf and I concluded the lamb was probably the best meat we've had in our lives. The tenderness, the flavor, the texture - all incredible, all perfect. Though we sat inside, we're looking forward to coming back and sitting in the outdoor seating! read more

Oh gosh... oh my gosh!!!!!! I love this place My partner Ali and I made reso for 7pm on a Sunday. They were quite busy when we arrived. We walked in and stated that we had a reso. The owner, Nazilla, was shocked as she thought we had cancelled our reso so she gave our table away. We stated that we didn't cancel our reso. She was apologetic and quickly found another table for us in their garden (small room full of flowers). After we sat down, she offered me a blanket, asked us if we wanted to be moved somewhere else with a heater, and continued to be apologetic as she was unsure if what had happened to our reso. She then later came back and stated that someone with a similar name called in to cancel their reso so she thought it was for us. Although we were absolutely fine as we were happy that there was availability for us.. let alone in the beautiful garden, Nazilla was so sweet and kind to investigate until she knew what had happened to our reso. We greatly appreciated her efforts. Ambiance: warm, inviting, home-y, elegant, classy, vibey Food: I just want to come back already! The Tadig With Stew (Ghormeh Sabzi) is the best I've tried. The tadig was so perfectly made (fresh, the perfect amount of crispiness). The Shiraz Salad was refreshing. The Kashk - e Bademjan is also the best I've tried and I will be ordering one for myself next time because my partner hogs the plate . Lastly, the Koobideh.... SO FREAKING JUICY!!!!! Like I can't even explain. I don't know what kind of sorcery was used but wow. My tastebuds and tummy were so happy. To top it off, we got the Mahkloot, a mixture of bastani and faloodeh, which was on the house because of our reso mix up and oh my goodness.. we were already so satisfied!!! It just made our night even more. And just when I thought it couldn't get any better than the experience we've had in the hour that we were there... Lavash then give me a bouquet of tulips in which I took back with me to SoCal. So so precious. Ali and I truly felt like we were at a family aunt's house. Hope you see you again, Lavash. My first time trying authentic Persian food, and it was so delicious! I would highly recommend trying the kabobs (which comes with bread and rice!). We got the joojeh (mixed ground beef and lamb) and barg (beef fillets - kind of like a better strip steak) -- both were great and u want to come back and try them all! Also, the eggplant appetizer and the Bastani (rose gelato) were some unexpected favorites of ours! Such a great spot for a light and healthy, yet hearty meal! read more

The quality of meat here is really good. The service is also very attentive and nice. That's the quick version! The longer version is, I do wish there was some kind of sauce or liquid flavor to accompany said dishes. And the amount of rice they give you is kind of too much for me. Often times, I am used to having less rice and like a side of vegetables or hummus. Onto the quality of the meat! I like how they give many combos of the meats so you can try them in almost any combination you'd like. The beef was my favorite, followed by the chicken. I try to stay away from the ground meat even though it's traditional because I just feel like, you get more value from the whole pieces of meat. But if it's your personal preference! The lamb pieces were much bigger than I expected, and they were pretty good too! Lastly, we wanted to try the really weird dessert but I guess so did everyone else because they ran out. I've been here many times as it's a favorite Persian restaurant but recently I came here the other day and the food quality isn't as good as it used to be. We ordered koobideh, chicken kabobs with rice and 2 appetizers. The kaskh bademjoon was pretty good but seems like there is less in amount and they flattened it on the plate to make it seem more than what it actually is in volume. The borani which is spinach and yogurt dip was extremely sour tasting which isn't normal. I've made this plenty of times with plain yogurt or lebna and it has a little tartness as regular yogurt would be. This dip tasted like it was going rancid but they served it anyways. The rice on the entrees were undercooked and lukewarm. They felt like pellets instead of light and fluffy as basmati rice should be. Usually when I make Persian rice, you first parboil it and then steam it and when it's served it's piping hot served over a dab of butter. The rice was not hot enough to melt butter so that was not up to my standards in terms of what I expect for price and restaurant type. Koobideh didn't have enough onion for meat mixture prior to grilling and seasoning was bland. Chicken was ok but breast was a little on the dry side, thigh is better but it seems like they mix both dark and white meat. Overall disappointed at this last visit. Hopefully they can improve otherwise there are other excellent restaurants in the city to choose from read more

Over all my visits, I've never had one negative experience or mediocre meal - a Lavash experience is wonderful every time! We thought we had found some great places - but this place knocked our socks off. You know it's good when after the first couple of bites, you're already planning the next two return visits. We will be regulars I know. First of all, yes make a reservation. It's a busy, local place with a huge take-out business. The stews are cooked in advance and are served very quickly. My hubs has had Fesenjan in 2 countries/6 states and countless restaurants (its his fav) and says this is one of the very best ever. I had the Bademjan (lamb) and it was fabulous! Had to ask the server about the vegetable as I didn't recognize it - it was melt in your mouth tender eggplant. Could only eat half - and the other half reheated perfectly at home. Lavash is one of our favorite restaurants in the city as it checks all the boxes: great food, wonderful service, and a unique atmosphere with all the fresh flowers. It's the place we go to for special occasions and we often order the special plates for 2 people that have various skewers of rice and veggies. The last time we went was on Mother's Day and we were given a free appetizer plate with lavash, feta (French!), and herbs. The flowers were so pretty - despite not being much of a picture-taker - I took photos of our family in front of them. But what was really pleasant: when the bill came we found that all costs were included in the price of an item! Something we really enjoyed in Europe. The price you see on the menu is the price you are charged, including tax, SF mandate tax, and so on. Tip is left up to you. I wish more restaurants would do this. Sure, I can whip out a calculator but it's a nice extra. read more

I'd noticed this place on a Friday night several months ago and vowed to try it someday. Finally came for lunch on a Wednesday afternoon. Delicious shrimp and salmon kabobs! The salmon was tender and so flavorful! We had the meal for 2 which included 2 salads but server subbed one salad for rice so we had a wonderful complete meal! We ordered a tiramisu to share and enjoyed tea with it. Service is warm and friendly. I know it gets very crowded in the evenings but not at lunch . We'll be back! read more

I have been going to this restaurant for 20 years and i find it lovely. Its family run which makes it better. I had not been there for years actually and i finally went back (its out of the way for me) but i remembered why i loved it. I regret ordering the feta/nut/cucumber/Tomatoe platter. I only did so because i was worried that they no longer offered that as the "bread/olive oil" but they do! Just a smaller version! Which would have been wayyyy sufficient. The vegie kebab is my go to. I love it and even the rice is good lol. The problem is that this time the onions were not cooked which takes all the fun out. I love them charbroiled. Next time Im taking away a star for that lol. The dish my "other" had was a rice dish with chicken and nuts and it was also yum. The pom juice is lovely The service is good! Loved this restaurant..... mostly for the kind, sweet service and of course the food being delicious doesn't hurt. I made reservations months ago to have a table for Mother's Day. We were promptly greeted at the front desk check in and seated almost immediately. Our server was a wonderful young man. He made recommendations and offered suggestions quite nicely, everything was spot on. The appetizers; borani, salad shiraz and mast o mosir were great!! I ordered the lamb chop and Luleh combo, the shah kabob, it was fantastic. The lamb chops were delicious, juicy and tasty. The zereshk polo was also amazing. They had a delicious pinot that I enjoyed and lovely mouth watering desserts. Our whole party was happy with our evening so we are grateful for the warmth of the staff, including the son and owner chatting with us on our way out. They brought out a complimentary plate of herbs,cucumber, tomatoes, and feta w/ lavash bread, the mint and basil leaves were a perfect and refreshing combo. We shared a green salad that was fresh and crisp. They we nice to switch the bell peppers for tomatoes. For our meal we ordered The Taste if Persia. I was impressed how juicy the chicken kabob was and perfectly season with flavor. They served a generous portion for 2 and even got to pack some to go. It was a perfect Mother's Day meal, and look forward to introducing my foodies here, as long as they let me join! ;) read more

Solid Persian food, especially for a casual pop in kinda place. We got their noodle/lentil soup, lavash with mint and feta, cucumbers, plus pickles and their spinach yogurt dish which is more a dip. The real star was their chicken stew, Fesenjan a tangy dream with walnuts pomegranates, chicken cubes with saffron rice, really fragrant. Everything was satisfying, but if you come here do not miss their Fesenjan. I've had this in other Persian places, but this is a magnificent creation which god only knows how long it took them to make it: a velvety texture, tangy but balanced and a perfect blend of spices with nothing too overwhelming. If you love the Mexican chicken mole concept, you're gonna love this more. Their execution and ingredients is a showstopper. The service was friendly and helpful, especially when we needed help in deciding between two dishes. Btw., the Fesenjan could've used more rice--next time, I'd order a side of rice only because there's so much sauce, we could've used another rice or bread to sop it up. No matter, I loved having leftovers :-) The interior is warm and cozy, with terrific art work, glittering chandeliers, even during the daytime, it has an oozing sexy vibe. So disappointing. First the good. It's in a nice neighborhood. Parking around the corner makes it easy. Nice decor. The rest is not so good. I have had worse Persian food, but I've also had much, much, much better. Worst part though was the service. Our waiter took so long even to get our drink order. And then turns out his friends were sitting at the table next to us. So our food comes, and the rest of our meal all we get is the backside of our waiter as he's too busy smooshing with his friends. Not once asking us how our meal was. I don't see too many Persian restaurants, and I love their food. So it was just a total bummer as my wife and I had been looking forward to it, and instead we agreed we'd never go back. read more

ZERO STAR! Food was tasteless, bland and low quality! In our group of 8 everyone of us had some problem with the food. Only Barg and kashk-e-bademjoon was okay. HOWEVER, The chicken kabob was super tough and smelly! The ash reshteh had no noodles and tasted like watery vegetables. The lamb shanks were so not marinated really and the cook of it was just not what we wanted. Kotlet was the worst part. It was mush and bland. Rice was super dry, not cooked enough and again bland. There was a hair in my food as well Some of us even felt sick after having the food. This will be our last time in Lavash and we'll make sure to warn our friends and family about this place. read more

YES THEY ARE BACK!!!! So happy they are back (and they said it's the same family the owns and operates it as before so yum!). When they shut down from a fire years ago I was so sad and there has been no other restaurant like this. The food is amazing. The service is friendly. I'm just so happy to have them back - yes it's only takeout and delivery now but it's still just as good. It looks like prices are higher on Grubhub so if you're picking up - just call them direct or order on their website directly. My favorite sounds boring but it is just so good - the chicken breast joojeh. and the mast-o musir (yogurt/onion like sauce - I think it's listed as a salad but it's really more like a sauce/spread/dip). Backlava and chocolava is good too. I have to go back to my old reviews to see other food I liked but the joojeh is still so spot on. So good. I will be back again and again and again. I really want them to survive this pandemic - they are a serious jewel in this city. And covid stuff: hand sanitizer available, masks on everyone, there's a table in the front door so you stand outside while you wait, ordered online so no payment exchanged. read more
