I ordered a BBQ Chicken Plate Served with Rice + Mac Salad $13.82 (including tax) and was disappointed. The chicken was dry, and needed a lot more sauce. The cabbage underneath is basically raw. The white rice was also dry. The only good thing about this meal was the macaroni salad. The food was unappetizing and I only ate a little bit and took home the rest. This is my go-to place for lunch after work on Saturday's. The portions are plentiful, and the prices are good. I'm trying to control how much carbs I'm eating right now, and increase the protein in my diet. This place allows customization with the sides, so it works out perfectly for me. I usually get the plate sized food here for the bigger portion sizes because I'm a big back that burns a lot of calories lol. The Loco Moco & the sauce is delicious, the beef curry is tasty, and the Lau Lau ain't bad either. When I come it's usually the same two ladies working the cash register all the time and they provide friendly and fast service. My food always comes out in less than 10 minutes. I'm not sure how long this location has been around, but truthfully I was in the area and planning to go to a different place a couple doors down from here. Suddenly I noticed several folks wearing scrubs stopping in for their lunch break and figured, why not try something new? I'd consider this place a hole in the wall that offers a variety of Hawaiian options! We went for a loco moco and a couple unique masbuis. The loco moco was an outstanding size! I got the Hawaiian Plate ($17.50), which included Kalua Pork and Lau Lau (butterfish & fatty pork cooked in 2 different types of leaves, like a fish/pork tamale without the masa), plus white rice and macaroni salad. I also ordered a Spam Musubi ($2.50). Total came out to around $23 w/ tip included. The best word I can use to describe the overall flavor of everything was "old." It just didn't taste freshly made. This place caught my eye as I was trying to find something to eat. There's plenty of parking in the lot but it can be very busy during peak times as there is a Target near and other places to eat including a tea place. I got their Mini Loco Moco with a sunny side up egg and with gravy smothered on top. This was ($9.50) and came with a scoop of rice and a scoop of mac. I also got this to go. The gravy had this weird taste after eating it with rice. I actually didn't eat most of it because of the weird taste it had. The hamburger patty also had no flavor but I ate all of it. And the mac had some flavor, but it started giving me a stomachache so I stopped. Honestly, I ate almost all of it minus most of the mac because I needed to eat something. Dont get deluvery from this place, the peoole dont pay attention. I ordered from Grub hub. So if they screw up the order there is no way for them to fix it. I ordered the katsu curry. Item came with no curry so the meat was dry, they also didnt pack my kimchi. I called them and they said I could go there and pick it up, but there was nothing they could do. This place is small and has a total of 5-7 tables inside I believe. It's not super packed the few times I've gone, and so you're likely to get a seat in here. I ordered the chicken katsu and curry with rice. I've had Japanese curry and so I assumed that is how it's going to taste. Do not get this! The chicken katsu is ok. I don't know why but it tasted like a gian chicken nugget for some reason. The curry has no salt. It was just a strong curry seasoning flavor, but it's like they didn't add anything else. I purchased the beef bowl and got really sick. I got food poisoning. I called and told the owner and he said that he couldn't do anything about it. I told him they need to be more clean and careful with the meat and how they cook and prepare the food so other people don't go through want I went to. He refused to help in terms of a refund. This is a solid choice if you're trying to avoid the VA cafeteria. It's relatively affordable and the portion sizes are good. I got the "mini" plate and it was more than enough for one meal. Went in and place a Togo order and paid $15 for the bbq combination plate with bbq beef , beef ribs & chicken . Drove all the way home and my order contained no beef- just chunks off fatty chicken pieces as seen below. LB Hawaiian Barbecue - All chicken ! Gross - Hawaiian Near Me - Long Beach, California

While at the Cal State Long Beach campus, I got a recommendation to try LB Hawaiian Barbecue which is located in the same shopping center as the Target on the corner of Bellflower and 7th street. I was also told that LB was similar to Hawaiian chain L&L barbecue as this location used to belong to L&L. With these expectations in mind, I felt inclined to try it out. Given this place is a quick service restaurant, I decided getting takeout would be the best course of action. To try as many items as I could in one dish, I chose to order the barbecue mix which cost 14 dollars before tax. The menu listed beef short ribs, barbecue beef, barbecue chicken, rice, and macaroni salad as the contents of the dish. Opening up the box, I was a little disappointed. Though the chicken was of good size, there were only one thin piece of short rib and one medium-sized piece of beef. Comparing to other Hawaiian Barbecue places, I'd expect there to be one or two pieces more. Because of this shortage, I'd argue the price to portion ratio was not justified for this particular dish. The flavors of the dish weren't very superb either. To start on a high note, the macaroni salad was pretty good with a good amount of mayonnaise on the the macaroni. This allowed there to be a good balance of sweetness and savory flavor that did not overpower the rest of the dish. Moving on, I feel the chicken was on the right path as it had a smoky flavor. However, it lacked moisture that I would usually expect from a dish such as this. The chicken needed the moisture from the rice to make it easier to eat. The chicken also lacked seasoning which made the flavors mediocre. The beef was average too, tasting like a simple teriyaki sauce. The piece of beef was also more dry than a piece of beef should usually be, which made eating it alone hard on the tongue without water or rice. Finally, the short rib was quite....short. The piece had a good sweet flavor. But because the piece was so thin, it tasted more like a piece of thin brisket. The texture was also not very moist either. Flavor-wise, it was just okay. There are many areas that I feel could be improved in components across the board. LB Hawaiian Barbecue is only getting 2 stars from me as for a holistic dish, the barbecue mix failed to capture really any special aspects of the restaurant. The price was heavily overinflated for the amount food given. On top of that, the food tasted pretty lackluster. I will say though that if you're looking for food with less sauce and more of the general charred flavor, this is probably for you! If you're near the Cal State Long Beach campus or are a student there, this is one of the only options directly around the campus. I'm not saying LB Hawaiian is terrible...but just know that you can get better food for better price elsewhere. read more
