One of my favorite restaurants in NYC. Incredible service and food. The duck entree was amazing.

When the sun goes down, Fidi in Lower Manhattan becomes a much quieter place. Office workers commute home at the end of the day and the streets become dramatically emptier. Tourists generally will make their way uprown for dinner and theater. This gem of a cafe restaurant reminds me of a classier Pastis or a quieter more intimate Balthazar. Bully, bully for Bouley. We had a nice corner table where we were blessed with a nice view of the dining room. I must admit, with the classy digs, I felt underdressed in my plaid shirt. We preordered the month special veal stew. We were surprised when shortly after the bread was placed on the table, our orders came all at once. As often is the case with French cuisine, the dishes were beautifully plated and presented. The bread came in an abstractly sculpted twisted form in a nicely crafted bag? I appreciated how the basmati rice was served on the side of my stew so as to allow the grains to absorb the flavors without feeling overly saturated and soggy. My wife's branzino, as was everything, prepared perfectly with delicate satisfying flavors. The gratin dauphinois comme marie was served in a dish that kept it warm as I finished my stew. The menu described it as Bouley's mother's recipe. I was wondering how great it would be to have this prepared for you as a child growing up. It was shared between the two of us and is a specialty to be savored. read more

I booked a table at Le Gratin almost immediately after it opened in the spring of 2022, partly because I've usually enjoyed Daniel Boulud's restaurants, but primarily because of its potato-centric menu -- when it comes to comfort food, my wife worships at the altar of the almighty spud, and so I knew she'd be thrilled with a fancy feast of taters in all their finest forms. And our inaugural visit was indeed a memorable meal from top to bottom. For the food, the richness of the Dauphinoise potatoes and moules frites was tamed by big bowls of pristine greens adorned with lump crab and garlic-mustard dressing, with everything washed down by racy, high-acid white wine. And the ambiance blew us away, from the bistro-chic decor to the convivial vibes and spacious booths. It was such an impressive experience that Le Gratin was the first place that sprang to mind when we decided to eschew our Feast of the Seven Fishes tradition and head out on the town to a classy joint for Christmas Eve dinner a couple of weeks ago. And it was as if nothing had changed during the past 18 months -- if anything, the food was even better and the vibes were even livelier. We once again ordered the aforementioned Dauphinoise potatoes and moules frites, as well as a bonkers special of barely cooked scallops with lobster broth, yuzu kosho, sea beans, maitake mushrooms and more. But my favorite dish was a new addition to the menu: artichokes with glazed root veggies. Holy moly, it took some truly brilliant classical cooking technique to make this so extraordinary. If I ate meat, I'd definitely try some of the more adventurous dishes, such as escargot tempura with pig trotter croquettes or the charcuterie (for which Daniel Boulud is rightly renowned). Fortunately, any dietary preferences -- potato-obsessed or otherwise -- will find satisfaction at Le Gratin. read more

Excellent service from everyone, maitre de (sp?), waiter Valentin was really good, all the other people that helped as well. Not on top of us in that cloying way that we dislike, but in a friendly way and when needed. Attractive restaurant, comfortable seating (not like Massara or Rezdora with their wooden benches without any type of cushioning), soft lighting, and music that is behind the scenes at a nice volume allowing for comfortable conversation. Rest rooms a little bit inconvenient (down stairs in Temple Bar which is next door and there is a doorway connecting it with Le Gratin) but not too bad. And the food was great. We loved it all. After the baguette, Crab Marie Rose salad 10/10 nice size, very tasty, plenty of crab Le Gratin Burger 10/10 loved the multiple flavors and the fries were terrific. Recently been to Au Cheval, Minetta Tavern, Polo Bar and others, tried the burger at each, and this one at Le Gratin is at least the equal of the best of those Half Poulet a la Rotisserie 10/10 terrific flavor, terrific jus just wow Mushrooms 10/10 so good Creme Caramel 10/10 every bite kept getting better Glaces (2 scoops) with chocolate sauce 9/10 the chocolate sauce was great but the texture of the ice cream was not ideal for our preferences We will for sure return to Le Gratin. read more

We had a wonderful dining experience for brunch/lunch, and I have to say it was amazing. The restaurant struck a balance between being upscale and formal yet casual, which made the Sunday brunch vibe perfect, especially as we were celebrating my best friend's birthday! The live music was a great touch. Our server was very pleasant and friendly. We were not rushed to decide on our lunch, which we appreciated. The food was outstanding! Everything we ordered was superb. For our appetizer, we decided to share a beet salad that had a nice crunch from pistachios, along with a selection of cheeses we enjoyed with some bread. My friend also had foie gras and a must-try dish, Chef Daniel's famous Le Gratin potato. The flavors were incredible, and I couldn't stop thinking about them! For our entrees, I had a lobster roll that came with fries, just like my friend, while her husband chose the Le Gratin burger. We made excellent choices for brunch. As pastry chefs, my best friend and I were especially excited for the best part of the meal--dessert! We indulged in profiteroles filled with chocolate hazelnut, gianduja ice cream and topped with chocolate sauce. We also tried crème caramel. The selection was fantastic! Came here a few days ago for Valentine's Day and overall had a good time. Really cute place and with great service that was very fitting for the day. Food was good too - It was good to try some French dishes I don't often usually see at other places. I'd be curious to come to try again in the future. read more

Met a fabulous NY'er here for dinner on a recent trip to the City. We started at the bar for a glass of wine, while we waited for our table to be ready. Once seated, we sipped our wine, enjoyed the ambience of the beautiful space, and perused the menu. I chose the Magret de Canard Au Poivre Vert with glazed vegetables and green peppercorn sauce. My friend decided on the baked cod, with a paprika crust , and seasonal bean fricassee. We shared a side of Gratin Dauphinois Comme Marie which according to the menu, is Chef Daniel Boulud's mother's recipe. Everything we ate, was delicious. Unfortunately, neither one of us had room for dessert. Next time for sure! I was only in NYC for the weekend and therefore only had the opportunity for three dinners. Some things about this restaurant were wonderful - the ambiance, which feels exactly like an upscale Parisian bistro, and some of the dishes we had, like the beet salad, the chicken liver pate, and the sole. However, it felt like there were still some glitches to be ironed out - they didn't seat us until 40 minutes past our reservation time (I think they sat walk-in favored patrons before us), my husband's liver came out almost raw, and there wasn't enough broth to flavor the mussels, which made them taste quite fishy and feel grainy in texture. Service was indifferent at best, but I do give them credit for recognizing their mistakes - like our delayed seating, and the raw calf's liver - and trying to make up for it by comping us our first round of cocktails (which were stellar) and also the calf's liver. I want this restaurant to succeed, so am hoping that it irons out the kinks in the future. read more

A colleague of mine took me out to Le Gratin for dinner after work and everything was spectacular. We started out with some lychee Martinis and deviled eggs for appetizers. Moving on to mains, we shared the Poulet Fermier (half rouge chicken with garlic jus). Okay this was good but the true highlight was DB's Mother's Potato Gratin. Super creamy deliciousness with a cheesy crunchy crust. Muah I could have some everyday. Ending the night with a mouthwatering array of desserts, my favorite was the chocolate profiterole. read more

Lovely French restaurant located near the Financial District made by Daniel Boulud. The vibe of the restaurant is kind of a dimly lit French bistro. The menu has your French bistro classics but the highlights are the Lyonaise inspired items. Of the various dishes we had I particularly enjoyed the tempura escargot and the duck, which was cooked perfectly. The gratin was also incredibly rich and delicious. I think this may be one of the more interesting French restaurants in the city and it's definitely one of the best restaurants in its neighborhood. read more

We were lucky to stop in at opening on a Friday afternoon for brunch. We had the place to ourselves and had incredible service and food. The waitress was lovely and happy to share her suggestions. Eh, not too hot about this restaurant and there's really nothing special here that'd make me want to come back. French onion soup was pretty solid and drinks were tasty in the moment, but so standard that it wouldn't be worth coming here. We were a big party and I was pretty unimpressed with how rushed and frustrating the service was, especially the confusion from management leading up to the reservation. They have space available for bigger reservations (10+) so I guess it works if you are in a pinch, but you can do better with some planning next time I think read more

Solid French food! We ordered the deviled eggs (dbl for $17), gratin, 10 oz New York Strip steak frites, and duck breast. The deviled eggs filling was great with the caviar, nice balance. The steak and duck were cooked well and had good flavor. The gratin was a little too heavy for us, too much cheese/butter, couldn't finish it. Service was amazing and the interior was nice!! Le Gratin is Daniel Boulud's new restaurant in the Beekman Hotel. In the space that previously housed Keith McNally's Augustine, Boulud focuses on food from Lyon where he was born and raised. While not the intestine heavy dishes that one associates with Lyonnaise cuisine, Boulud has served up some outstanding food with a food to his childhood. Had a great dinner at Le Gratin earlier this week. Food and service were both excellent. We started with the mushroom tartelette and the tuna crudo. The mushroom tartelette had many different types of mushrooms and had an incredible umami flavor. We then had the baked cod and roasted duck. Both were perfectly cooked and well executed. On the side we shared the gratin dauphinois potatoes. I love gratin potatoes and these were a really great version - just the right texture with melty cheese. For dessert we shared the tarte aux pommes with calvados ice cream. The pastry was buttery and flaky like a croissant, and the calvados ice cream was well balanced. The service was great. It was a busy night but our waiter was attentive and observant. Another table was sort of blocking us, but our waiter made sure he still checked on us, poured our wine, etc. read more

The roasted chicken, steak tartar, mussels and frisée salad with chicken livers...best in class. I actually ordered the homemade bread with homemade butter for desert is was so good! You MUST do the potatoes, duck, half chicken and spaghetti. The desserts are the perfect ending. YUM. It was a walk to the bathroom, but worth the excursion. It's like opening a door and walking into a cross between a speak-easy and library. We will definitely be back! read more

I've raised my children in some of the finest restaurants in the world (of course with the understanding you must leave if a child dare acts overwhelmed or frustrated with a situation) Now I get the pleasure of teaching my Goddaughter the experiences of life and enjoy phenomenal service and delectable meal. Can not say thank you enough to the staff for trusting us to bring in a three year old at 7pm on a Saturday evening! Being single Mom's we don't always want a babysitter but to share our lives with our children. The food did come out very quickly and the staff was very accommodating to all of our request. Had a fantastic time at dinner here. I immediately felt very welcomed by the numerous greetings various waitstaff bestowed while entering the restaurant. The space is of course beautiful, with soft dim golden lights throughout. The food was a little on the rich side but overall spectacular so long as you're expecting it. I would love to eat salad every day if it was like the Salad Lyonnaise with the rich liver and lardons adding warmth to the crisp veggies. The Duck Au Poivre had a fantastic sauce, and the Gateaux was really well balanced with sweet and bitter chocolate. Can't wait to come back and try more things on the menu! read more

We had an amazing experience this past weekend at Le Gratin. The service was exceptional and attentive. We had the litchi martini and genepy spritz for drinks, which were both refreshing and delicious. The complimentary bread was so warm and tasty. We had the tuna crudo to start (amazing, highly recommend) and steak frites and duck for our mains. Duck was incredible, super tender and came with a perfect pepper sauce to accompany it. My fiancé said his steak was great. Also, they were accommodating with food allergies and made adjustments to my finance's main course without an issue. Came here for a work lunch, because we heard they had a top notch burger in lower NYC. All three of us has burgers, and all were content. Wouldn't go as far as saying it's the best, but decent. (better burgers for $30) The service was good, but it was not busy when we went so a lot of attention was on us - we had 3/4 different waiters asking if we were OK etc, which was kind of annoying. read more

Daniel Boulud,you need a new hostess. As patrons were coming in she allowed everyone to pick their seats and to sit next to us in an empty restaurant at 5:30 pm. I was with my daughter who is young ,blonde and attractive .. We asked to move repeatedly so we could celebrate my birthday and not be part of a table for ten in an empty restaurant .. The manager tried to rectify the problem but by this point my experience was ruined. Yes ,the food lived up to the hype but this is NewYork. I will stick to Jean-George's. read more

We paid for First Class, but all we got was Coach. Even though our prior meal here was mediocre at best - tough steak, congealed shallot sauce, 2 laughably overpriced asparagus spears, soggy French fries, a server pushing wine hard out of the gate - we decided to have our New Year's Eve dinner at Le Gratin. We live in the neighborhood, and it's such a pretty space, so we thought it would be nice to return. Silly us. The food was okay; nothing special. Deviled quail eggs, Coquilles St. Jacques (I've never had one with so many potatoes in it), halibut with leeks and crispy potatoes (they were not crisp), Tournedos Rossini with black truffle sauce (the sauce was brown, but alas, no truffle flavor), lemon tart (the best item of the night). Service was incredibly rushed all through the night. It seemed as though staff were under orders to move customers along promptly. I felt like I was riding in Coach, with the service cart coming by before the plane was preparing to land. I almost started looking for the tray table. People were clearing out, and by the end of the night, the floor was desultory. If you are celebrating New Year's Eve somewhere, you expect a little celebration, don't you? Some indication that, hey, it's an occasion. Maybe a little Auld Lang Syne. Not here. The way we heard it was midnight was when one of the remaining tables in the restaurant exclaimed Happy New Year! In the distance we did hear the staff wishing good wishes to each other. About 5 minutes later, we received a thimble of champagne. So much for that. I would like to add that we paid $685 with tax and tip for the experience. It shall not be repeated. Ever. On top of all that, I was violently sick the next day. Green at the gills until about 5pm. The respect that Le Gratin has for its customers is endemic to the entire chain of staff. My coat was returned to me without my gloves, and when I left voicemails, no one bothered to return my calls. On the fourth try I reached a manager, but by then I was over the whole dispiriting thing. What a load of Ick. read more

I was even doubting between 3 and 4 stars. Since it's Daniel's restaurant, you'd expect high quality and excellence! The interior and decor is great! Service is nice. Not too attentive. The food you are expecting to be amazing. And after having a tasting menu at Centurion Lounge designed by Daniel, you expect it to be somewhere in the area. It was not. Far from it. The cocktails are amazing! Ordered duck and poulet rotie. The duck was very underdone, very chewy, nothing like at Centurion where it melted in your mouth. This one was far away from that. Veggies and sauce were good although bit salty. The chicken was far away from a nice poulet roti I had in Paris or a small bistro in Midtown - where it was a small chicken with zero fat and crispy skin. Here it was a ginormous dinosaur of the chicken, with a soft skin. Sauce was good. But nothing crispy. And I'd expect from Daniel's restaurant to serve organic chicken, not a goose size monster. On a positive note, the bread they served in the house was freshly baked and great. The dessert - chocolate profitrole was a chocolate orgasm- chocolate batter with chocolate cream topped with chocolate ice cream and chocolate shards covered in chocolate sauce. read more

Hostess altitude adjustment please... Mistakingly thought I made a resy on this slow Wednesday eve and was happy when I walked in to a not too busy restaurant. Many empty seats. Hostess was like, you have to wait at the bar for 30 minutes before I seat you (in my empty restaurant). I'm like, bye. And had $$ dinner right next door in the same building. You gotta read the room yo. I walked by afterwards and still had many open tables (of course). It's a shame cuz I want this place to be around. Too bad. Great meals last few times. read more
