What can I say about this business, except they have the best custard and pumpkin pie on the planet! 12/24/15, approximately 11:30am: I have not been here when there was a line, so today was my first. It's Christmas eve, and I took a chance on 1) finding parking close by, and 2) getting a pie. I was able to find a stall right outside Nam Fong on Maunakea St., just about a block away. Christmas luck number one. The back of the bakery line ended just before the end of the bakery's awning. (Wow, that sounded wierd) I got in line and it started pouring. Christmas luck number two. As I stood outside the front window, I peered in, between the shelves of cookies, sponge cakes and shrimp chips, to see that there were only three customers inside being helped by three employees. I suppose, the people in line with me were regulars of the bakery, because they patiently waited either just inside or just outside the door. It must be the bakery policy to not allow crowds of customers standing inside waiting to be serviced, and people seem to be fine with it. I know I was. When I was finally called to be helped I asked for a pumpkin pie. I was told that if I didn't have an order, it would be another hour before the pies came out of the oven. It was raining, I was hot I was tired and if my pillow and blanket had not been screaming my name I probably would have wandered around Chinatown until my pie was done. Heaven knows my stomach wanted it but the rest of me refused to wait. I should have known better. Mt Christmas luck ran out. One other useful tidbit, the fresh custard pies aren't available until after 8:30am. Sometimes, not always, but sometimes, you can get lucky and purchase a cold one from yesterday. We usually order the peach pear pie here and you can't go wrong. At one time it used to cost around $6... and prices have gone up consistently since then. Now it's a tad over $10. Suggest eating the pie right away, it's best when fresh. It melts in your mouth and is not too sweet, the crust is crispy, not burnt, nice and brown. Too bad Sunny Side doesn't open a store in Honolulu. read more

I'm a huge fan of egg-based desserts- flan, chawanmushi, panna cotta, creme brulee and especially custard! I would say that Lee's has one of the best custard pies on the island. It's hard to say that judging from a bakery located in Chinatown, but it's true! The texture of the custard is perfect- not too soft, nor too congealed. Truthfully, I sort of hate to love this place during Thanksgiving. They really do have the best custard pies AND pumpkin custard pies. Best crust, best filling, just ugh. The thing about Thanksgiving time (or probably any holiday time) is you can call in your order but you will still have to wait in line. I waited an hour on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. So I tacked on two other people's orders to mine so we didn't all have to wait. Just as a warning: everyone does this! So if you're waiting in line for an hour, it's probably because the ten people in front of you ordered 20 pies each. The staff and their system is just straight up old-school. They have your order handwritten on little post-its with tape and things can get lost and confused. During the holidays, have someone drop you off, so you don't have to worry about parking. And tell them go shopping and don't wait around. I don't care for waiting in line so long for something I already pre-ordered, but trust me when I say you gotta have Lee's custard pie and/or pumpkin custard pie at least one. read more

From the outside, the store doesn't seem very nice-looking, and you'd probably even miss it while you're walking past the banks and restaurants on the way to some fresh produce in Chinatown. However, you might also notice a delicious bakery scent wafting from someplace unknown. This smell, my friends, is from the home of the custard pie, Lee's Bakery and Kitchen. I've only had the custard pie and the egg tarts from here, but that's all you need from this bakery! Freshly baked, the pie is the perfect melding of egg and sugar (and flour?) for the filling, while the crust is nice, flaky, and not terribly sweet. For the price they charge, $9.75, it is definitely a bargain, and definitely a must-have for any party. Same goes for the egg tarts, which are slightly larger than regular egg tarts you would find at dim sum places, and go for $0.95 each. The filling and crust are so perfect; in fact, they're the best egg tarts I've ever eaten in Hawaii. They also sell assorted bakery items such as pumpkin custard pie, sweet rolls, and Asian-style cookies. They even have those typical hot-dog-filled buns that I had as a little kid. I've never tried them, but they look good! The ladies that were there when I ordered the cake were very nice, and they were really quick with their service! They have price, taste, and service down, so I don't see why this place should get any less than 5 stars! Just be sure to bring cash, since they don't accept credit card. I haven't had Lee's custard pie in years and with that first revisited bite, it took me back to those warm, nostalgic times where family, stories, and Lee's custard pies go hand in hand. Not too sweet or eggy just smooth...hold on (taking another bite as I type for accuracy) balanced and Addictive (beware ladies it's a diet be d***med I'm mad @ my boyfriend binge type of pie). I know people rave about two of their pies, and Even stand in line for three hours the day before Thanksgiving to get these suckers. The custard and the peach/pear pies are the faves. Verdict: the custard pie is good, really good, but not amazing. The peach/pear although it's a great idea combining the two fruit it's made with canned fruit so it's not as good as it could/should be. Feels like a bit of a rip off for the price. read more

This review is for their manapua and ham & egg pastry. Very disappointed in the portion of fillings. The manapua had only a third of pork. Rest just bread. Tossed it. If i wanted bread, I would've bought bread. The ham & egg pastry had a quarter egg and half portion of ham (one thin cold cut slice folded over). Tossed this half of bread away too. I didn't know there was a shortage on egg and cold cuts! If your expectation is manapua with a reasonable amount of filling, then you better trust me on this one! read more

I heard so many good things about this little place in Chinatown. Heard the pies are really good, so had to try. I had the custard pie and even got a butter horn, as I'm still trying to find the perfect butter horn like Makiki Bake Shop used to make. Custard pie was better than average, but the butter horn was dry. It looked good, but dry. Maybe next time I'll add some butter and nuke it. I made it a point to leave early for work so I could make this detour and pick up one of those infamous custard pies from Lee's Bakery & Kitchen (it was my co-worker's birthday). Talk about utter fail because when I got there (about 7:20ish) there were no custard pies to be found in the glass case. According to the cashier, there would be no pies ready until after 8 AM. As I debated on ordering a pie and coming back later to pick it up, I snagged some pineapple buns. They were a bit expensive in my opinion. Passing, but not something which left me craving more.
