I love Custard Pie and recently heard that Lee's makes one that is delicious and coveted. I decided to go to Chinatown on a Saturday morning and pick one up. I got there around 8:30am and the woman who helped me was so nice. I was in luck as there were still two Custard Pies in the display case. I brought the Custard Pie home and it was still warm. That first piece was melt in your mouth good. I then put the Pie in the refrigerator and shared some of it later with family. Even cold the Pie was delicious. The crust of the pie is perfect. I like big buns and I cannot lie. You oddah braddahs can't deny! I like dem big and round and fluffy. Okay, enough of that. Lee's Bakery is one of those long time, staple establishments in Chinatown where everyone just knows it is thee place to go for your variety of pies, buns, cakes, pastries, and other baked goods. Try coming here on Thanksgiving Eve and Day. From the early dawn till late dusk, there is always a crazy long line that goes around the block! I've been coming here more and more frequent as I am having less and less time to make breakfast at home. One of my favorites is the pineapple bun as I've grown up always eating them. The top of the bun has a very nice flaky crust that holds very well. All the other places I've tried, the top crust either falls apart very easily causing a big mess, or it's not crusty at all to the point where you can peel the whole crust off. The inside is so soft and fluffy. It doesn't eat dry at all, it is not overly sweet, and the size is well-portioned. It's a decent price at $1.25 per bun. I remember when they were 60 cents! The Chinese Custard Bun is similar to the pineapple bun, but it is flatter in shape because of the filling. The custard was good. Again, not too sweet with the right amount of filling. This would be a satisfying dessert. The Ham and Egg Bun was all right. The bun, as always, was the star. So light and fluffy. The ham added a nice salty savoriness, and the egg actually felt like eating an egg. The ladies in front are always very friendly and they teach me how to say some of their food items in Cantonese since I can't read Chinese :( and the literal English translation is rarely the correct saying. It's clear why Lee's has been a staple in Chinatown and why it's so popular amongst Locals. It's buns are second to none! read more

OMG! Our favorite is the peach pear pie! So delicious! My daughter's favorite is the peach pie but you need to special order it. Yesterday, I bought a peach pear, Apple pie, & then I saw an Orange Chiffon ring cake. It was so soft & so cheap $7, just had to buy it & try it! The Orange Chiffon is so soft, fresh & yummy! We have tried orange chiffon all over the place:Napoleons, Liliha Bakery & different supermarkets but Lee's is the BEST & the cheapest! I've heard so much about the pies here and have seen the lines during Thanksgiving. I was in the area today and while they didn't have a pumpkin pie- I did get my next favorite peach pear! I finally got to try their famous pumpkin and custard pie. It just was meant to be because I purchased the last one. How lucky! Their 9" pumpkin & custard pie is $14.50. I wasn't sure if I heard it correctly. I thought maybe my hearing was going bad. Custard part tastes pretty standard but pumpkin was on the fluffy side. Pumpkin looks pretty standard too but I don't know why it tastes fluffy. Maybe it's the combo of the two flavors? I do like the pie. The counter ladies were very nice. I've heard so much great reviews about Lee's Bakery pies especially the custard, Apple, and peach and pear. One of my coworkers wanted the apple and peach and pear pie for their birthday so I was excited to go pick it up. Lee's is located in the heart of Chinatown near the Bank of Hawaii and walking distance from my office. They have free parking located at 111 North School Street. The space is just right for a bakery. They have many different types of things to select from beyond pies. Such as sandwiches, bread, cookies, etc. The customer service was on point and the prices were inexpensive. I was able to pay and place my order to be picked up on a later date too. The day before they called me to remind me to pick up my order and when I did it was hot and fresh out of the oven. Both pies were so delicious. We all enjoyed it very much. I love pumpkin pie and I love egg tarts, I never even thought they could make a baby that could be even better than each of them on their own. The staff here is super nice - they had run out of the elusive pumpkin custard pie for the day but actually made one to order for us while we went to each lunch. $14.50 is such a small price to pay for the most satisfying, glorious and tasty pie you've ever scarfed. While you're waiting, hop down to Nam Fong to scarf some crispy pork and roast duck. If you're a major fatty, stop by the bakery next door to Nam Fong and get succulent Shu mai!!! I was never a huge fan of Custard Pie. The custard pies I've tried always had a strong eggy taste which I didn't much care for. Therefore, I was more of a Pumpkin person. Until now!!! Every year, during Thanksgiving, I would hear either on the news, social media, or someone raving and having to stand in line for these famous custard pies. So...I had to find out for myself. It's a little over a week past Thanksgiving on a Saturday and decided to trek it out to Chinatown. One the way there I called to see if they were selling their pies. Lady said "EVERYDAY" (who knew). I decided to place a phone order for pick up. Love the option of what time to pick it up. :) upon arrival, my order was waiting in the box ready to go. Tip: if possible have someone drop you off and do a round about to pick you up. Assuming it's not the peaks times. The custard pie looked beautiful. It was warm and freshly made. When cutting, it was extremely soft and bouncy and when eating it just melted in your mouth. Tasted more like custard than that eggy favor, but the right amount of sweetness. I finally see what the fuss was about. The only downside now is having to be one of those people standing in line for them during the holidays. Lol. But it's so WORTH IT! Now, trying to get one while in a rush is another story. No phone orders on holidays and the longest lines ever. Even on an off day with a phone order, it could take a while. This place is located on the main road in china town so best plan of action..... make a phone order, go with a driver, on a non- holiday, early in the morning , then have your driver stop you off in front the store while they turn down the next alley and wait for you on the side of the road, when done, call your driver to go around the block and pick you up in front the store!!! Went to Lee's bakery about a month ago and was disappointed with the Custard Pie. The crust was not flaky like it used to be and tasted more like store bought crust. The taste of the custard wasn't the same as well. I used to taste the richness of the custard but now it's comparable to a grocery store pie. For the amount they charge for a pie, they should not compromise on ingredients and the process which made their pies so delicious. Will not go back until they return to the original recipe. Oh and there's a pushy and grouchy older local white guy at the counter who needs to work on his customer service skills. If they continue working this way, they will go out of business. read more

Used to be an apple pie / pumpkin pie kinda guy before this place changed it all. Yes, it's that good (get the whole pie, the tart tastes different.) Helpful tip: There will be a huge line come Thanksgiving Day. The earlier you go, the longer the line will be. (Not sure if people are celebrating Thanksgiving breakfast?) My friend wanted to buy a pie for her office mates so we made the trek up North King Street to Lee's Bakery which is home to one of the best custard pies in town (thanks Dave F. for the stellar recommendation!). I was not planning to buy anything, but since it was nearly lunchtime, I was hooked by the aromas wafting out of the back kitchen and the sight of fresh-baked Chinese wedding cakes. These wedding cakes were more like cookies -- pale flaky discs with a chewy filling -- but with none of that char siu that so often makes surprising appearances in the "other" bakery's wedding cakes. One for just 60 cents! Okay, so put me down for two. Greedily, I ate the first one, savoring the buttery crust and sweet filling, and half-heartedly offered the other to my friend. As I chewed thoughtfully, my eyes wandered to the display case in the window and saw (can you hear the angel music?!) ... orange chiffon cake. These golden rings with dots of orange rind were just what I'd been missing since the closure of Ace Express. The smaller cake ring, maybe 7 inches in diameter, was only $5. Ka-ching! When I sliced a piece of the orange chiffon cake for the four-year-old after dinner that night, he could barely contain his excitement and shoved the whole thing into his mouth reveling in the soft, fluffy treat. This is the best pie in Hawaii, period! They have peach pear, custard, pumpkin custard, blueberry, and apple. They all are great! The pie is about $13. That is super cheap, unlike places that sell pies for $20-$40 which is absurd. My favorite is the blueberry. It just has such good flavor. Also, the custard pie is known as the best in Hawaii. Overall, you always get a great pie when you go here. Last week during Thanksgiving, there were lines up to 125 people. read more
