Really surprised this place has 2 1/2 stars! This was one of the places my family suggested we go to and I didn't doubt their judgment, so I went along with it regardless of the yelp reviews. I'm glad we did because everything was delicious! A lot of the reviews do mention service was lacking, but I didn't feel that way at all - maybe it's because we spoke Cantonese but honestly they were still very attentive throughout our meal even when we weren't conversing with them. We got a wide variety of things to share family-style. X.O Sauce Rice Rolls: Super flavorful, always a favorite amongst the entire group. Can't go wrong with this if you enjoy Cheung Fun. Curry Beef Rice Noodle: My favorite of all the dishes in this meal! The beef was super tender, and the curry was just the perfect amount of spicy. Shanghai Stir Fry Rice Noodle: Probably my least favorite, but still yummy - just personal preference as I don't like "mai fun" (Thin Rice Noodle) Pork Chop Baked Rice: This was very delicious - I just found it hard to cut the pork chop when it was on top of the bed of rice. Salted Fish Fried Rice with Chicken: Super yummy, I love how the rice is cooked in this dish - it's not hard, but also not mushy. It's like the equivalent of "aldente" pasta. Choy Sum: Pretty good, but after the check came and we realized it was EXPENSIVE like $13? Definitely not worth getting. The staff was rude and treated us like children. We asked for a different kind of sauce and they just pointed at that one. But when I went to pay I could see a lot of sauces on the counter. They weren't attentive and were more just talking and then demanded a tip. I didn't tip because the service and I always tip. After I put 0 for the sip on the receipt the waitress brought the receipt back to the table and said that the tip isn't covered in the total, of course I know that! Once in a blue moon, I would crave HK style food and I always like to come to Leisure Cafe since it's pretty close to where I live. There's a wide selection of delicious food as well as dessert. My top faves are the baked dishes, although they take awhile to come out. There's not a dish that I haven't liked, everything tastes pretty good. On top of that, I always either get the HK hot milk tea or iced lemon tea. This place is kind of crowded especially on weekends so I normally grab a menu to see what I want while I'm waiting so that once I'm seated, I usually order right away. I agree with other Yelpers that it helps a lot if you know Chinese, but either way, service is okay considering it's a Chinese cafe style restaurant where some servers have an idgaf attitude, but whatever you need, they still provide. One complaint that I have is from today when I went. I was sitting in the front corner and there were a bunch of annoying flys flying everywhere. I had to shoo them away with my hands every other minute while I was eating to make sure they didn't land in my food. I turned around and saw a bunch of them under the blinds (see attached pic) - gross!! It would be really great if they could fix these flys issue. Food is decent, tasty, and relatively cheap, but the service is REALLY hit or miss. In one instance, I came by myself on a weekday evening when the restaurant was pretty deserted. I waited at least three minutes for someone to seat me. Then, I waited for someone to take my order while I sipped cupful after cupful of tea. I must have gone through at least 5 refills of tea before someone came to get my order. On my most recent visit, my friend and I were sitting in our booth and we were ready to order. Well, the waitress went to help the table behind us. Then she circled around the restaurant, and just as I thought she was approaching us to take our order, she stops at the table in front of us to take their order, turns, and walks away towards the kitchen. I went, "Seriously? She's just ignoring us?" and that was when she heard and spun around and came back to us. I asked if rice balls could be added to my half and half sesame and red bean soup. She and another waitress said that would be fine, it would cost an extra $1, which was fine by me. When my order came, THERE WERE NO RICE BALLS. I could have just let the $1 go, but I didn't, not because it's just a dollar, but because if I'm paying extra for more attentive service, I'm not going to let that go unnoticed and let them know that they can't get away with that. Even though they revised the receipt, I didn't tip them for this trip because the service was overall subpar. Oh, and pretty much all the desserts I wanted to order are permanently out, even though they're still on the menu several months later. For instance, no more duck-shaped mango pudding. I was craving HK cafe food, and Leisure Cafe was one I hadn't tried yet near Fremont. I was pleasantly surprised by the cute interior decor, but the food and prices offset that. Unfortunately, the food quality did not seem authentic and did not taste great. We ordered 3 dishes. The baked fish and corn spaghetti is a classic HK dish, but it tasted very bland, seemed like it had canned peas/corn, and a few pieces of partially cooked broccoli. We also had the pork feet and tofu skin rice plate which was mediocre. The pork feet was mostly fat, and both the meat and tofu skin were hard and not too flavorful. Lastly, we ordered the chicken mushroom and clay pot rice which was the best out of all of them. It had the most flavor, but it also was made with mostly white rice which I'm not used to for a clay pot. The prices were pretty steep as well, with the average dishes being around $18-$20+. The service was also not too great; no one came to check on us, refill or tea, or give us our check/boxes. It's cute inside, but other than that I would not come back. read more

COVID update! I've still been a loyal fan of Leisure Cafe for HK cafe food. I've picked up food from here a couple times even during quarantine. Our family loves to order from here because of its wide selection. It's definitely gotten pricier over time though. COVID precautions: there's hand sanitizer at the front right table, stickers are taped on the floor for social distancing measures, and there's a temperature check stand on the floor. When you call at rush hours, it can be hard to reach them. Luckily the times I've called, they answered on the first try. Food is still really good and huge portion sizes! Causal Hong Kong style cafe. They did some remodeling earlier this year so the interior is upgraded. However that also means the prices went up a bit as well. Portions are always a good size so it's recommended to share one of the bigger plates and order a small appetizer to go with it. This time around I ordered the shrimp wonton noodle soup (shrimp was a bit salty) and Chinese broccoli with garlic sauce bc I wanted some greens. The roast duck over rice is great! Hainan chicken over rice is also good. Overall, food is average and good portion, but not any kicker which you would recommend a friend. Food wise- it's one of the best HK cafes in the East Bay. Delicious food and very generous portions. There is a lot of variety on the menu that is a mix of common HK cafe food as well as special dishes that are unique to this cafe. Service wise- it's 2 stars but that is unfortunately expected (and stereotypical) of HK/Chinese restaurants. If you move a bit too slow or ask 1 too many questions, you'll be getting some attitude, both verbal and non-verbal. Even as an Asian American trying to speak and order in broken Cantonese can only get you so far on being on the staff's good side. Have low expectations with the service but don't take it personal. My family has been eating at Leisure for years! They were always packed pre-COVID but the wait was always worth it. They have been very good about social distance and limiting contacts since COVID. When I went today, they had a temperature checker at the door before you go in. I love how big the portions are. 1 dish could easily be shared or split into a couple of meals. I worked at a Chinese restaurant before and totally understand the chef is pretty much the main role of restaurant. No server wants to upset him or her. However serving hazardous food shouldn't be happening anywhere. Today, I ordered a clam pasta with a lot of broken shells in it. That's very obvious for the chef and server to see before bringing to table. I notified one of the servers and her response was "oh, they must be from the bottom of frozen package" then walked away. They could be in serious trouble if the broken shell choked anyone or broke anyone's teeth. No servers wanted to bring it back to the kitchen or notify the chef or even consider its a problem. One of my favorite spots for HK cafe food. I always get their baked dishes as their red and white sauce taste very authentic. My personal favorite is the baked spaghetti with meat sauce. They have a large menu so many different items to try. The foods great but can get pricy due to all the Covid price increases but most of the main dishes are pretty big portions. Service really can still be a hit or a miss depending on the day and time. Undoubtedly, their baked pork chops with rice is delicious. Every time I think about that specific dish, I forgot about the bad service because the food is so good. The pork chops (comes with two) were incredibly tender and the portion is massive. Come on down at your leisure! I am actually surprised as to why the ratings are so low. I have always had quite a leisurely time here. The food is more than adequate, and although service isn't necessarily the best, it's pretty much par for the course by Chinese standards. It's never overly crowded (nor is it dead), so you are usually able to sit down comfortably without much of a wait. Seating is also spacious, and the dining experience is enjoyable overall. If I'm with a group, we usually order family style, but if alone, I always default to my baked pork chop over rice. Their version here is definitely in my Top 3 in the Bay Area! I've tried a plethora of HK cafés, and I'm very picky about this particular dish (check my last meal on earth). I'll just break it on down with a couple of bullet points: Food: B Leisure Café is mainly an HK café (aka cha chaan teng), so they have the usual gamut of baked goods over rice or spaghetti. In addition, there is a wide selection of family style dishes. As mentioned above, I was pleasantly surprised by the baked pork chop over rice. The fried rice is tasty without being overly greasy, and the pork chop is quite meaty. My main complaint with most other places is that they often rip customers off by using fatty, super thin slices of pork chop, the majority of which is usually bone! You are tricked into thinking you have a certain size ready to be devoured, (which is typically not that large to begin with), and to find out that half of it is inedible is quite disappointing. Well, my friends, I am happy to report that you won't find that issue here at Leisure Café! For shared dishes, I have sampled everything from salmon fillet, salmon head, mixed seafood with vegetables, ox tail, and their special fried rice. No complaints whatsoever! Service: C+ If there is one problem customers may have, this is likely it, but I have not experienced any issues in each of my visits. Perhaps their English is not the best, and they may have trouble understanding sometimes? That is the only thing I can think of. The food comes out in a timely manner, and the servers usually drop by every so often to refill tea. That's all you can ask for. Are they super attentive? No, but they let you enjoy your meal in peace instead of hovering over like vultures. Ambience: B Tables are spread out, and seating is quite comfortable. Lighting isn't too dim, nor bright, with high ceilings. Music isn't excessively loud, and there isn't much echo or sound reverberation. Location: B+ I believe this used to be a Taco Bell or some other fast food chain. Leisure Café has an ideal location that is both adjacent to East 14th, and part of a strip mall with plenty of parking. There is a T4 next door that gets crazy packed, so if there are no spots directly in front, there is a huge lot with a Safeway adjacent. Sweethoney is also a few blocks down if you are looking for dessert. Overall: B Once again, the poor reviews are somewhat shocking, but I suppose those are mostly for the service, and not the food. Long overdue review for my favorite HK Cafe in the east bay. There's just not that much HK Cafes available in San Leandro yet this place makes the best out of it.
