Everyone there was very nice and helpful, but the food was something to be desired. I ordered the "low calorie" Grilled Salmon and Vegetables. The fillet was a very generous double portion (which would be good if not ordering a low-cal option). Came in for breakfast on a Sunday, it was busy, they were flippin tables like crazy, in a good way. Didn't rush us at all, and our server, cant' remember her name, was Spanish and great! very friendly and on top of everything. The Pancakes were so good! I only wish they had differen't flavor syrups like IHOP haha but still good! My fiance got the Apples/Cinnamon Belgian Waffle..... OMG this was awesome!! I stole some of them and put them on my pancakes!!! He also got the Italian omelete, which he said was really good too... I know, he's a fatty... Prior to the new ownership I could care less for this place. However, I decided to give it another try once I knew there was new ownership. This place is my new favorite restaurant to go to in Oakland. The people are nice, attentive, but more importantly the food is amazing. Went for Sunday late breakfast early lunch....what a great little diner! I had a house salad and asked for a bit of fresh broccoli in it and it was very well made little salad. The panini I had was really good and my husband had a basic egg and pancake breakfast. They have a lot of fun pancake options like red velvet and Nutella. How cool is that? They have a bowl full of mini chocolate chip cookies at the door on your way out. I definitely snagged a bunch for the ride home. I'd go back there for sure. read more

They've made the leap from 'Grille' to 'Diner'....don't know what the difference is technically, but I can say its a positive change since I ate there a couple of years ago. After eating at diners so often, I am used to the same level of mediocre (with the occasional extra credit for decent gravy for the fries). However, I was sincerely surprised by my lunch meal. Homemade coleslaw, excellent gravy for the fries, and a tasty and meaty cheesesteak wrap. My mom ordered a fruit and nut salad, with grilled chicken - one of the few times I wished I had a smart phone so I could post a picture of it. And she gave it kudos for taste, too. Maybe because it was a Monday, the service was extremely attentive, but the staff was friendly all around. (I still can't completely rid myself of thinking that it should be the 'Hens Roost', but I guess I have to move on...I still think the Hudson. City Savings is 'Collucis' pizza!) read more

Update: We went for lunch, turkey club was very good, panini good, lemonade great, service was excellent, manager was very nice, young lady walked around to every table and asked how they were doing. I love that. The only negative I can think of is, smoothies are $5.29. i would Love to try one,....but not for that price. $3.99 I would get one every time,...anymore and its not worth it. Went for lunch. The owner from Preakness Diner took this over last month. The food is fresh and the restaurant is very clean. John greets you at the door and makes you feel welcome! We'll I've lived in Oakland for30+ years and I have to say this restaurant has become the best kept secret of Oakland. Since they have hired an A top chef 6 months ago the specials are Amazing! I had the chicken with asparagus over penne comes with soup or salad and dessert all for 17bucks. Large portions so can be shared! MY dinner companion had the pot roast special. She ordered the soup, freshly made vegetable amazing. Also at the table they serve an olive tapenade with the most amazing rolls. Dessert I chose cheesecake which was creamy and delic! Perhaps one of the worst diners in NJ. My wife and I used to frequent Lenape Grill when it first opened. It's close to our house, breakfast is a hard meal to screw up, and the food was always decent. The place was usually fairly crowded on weekend nights. Over the past year or so, we noticed the crowds have disappeared. IMO - diners need a consistent crowd so the food turns over regularly. If not, they try to stretch the life expectancies of their food to generate a profit. Net result is that the food served becomes questionable. We went for dinner early 2011 on a Saturday night at around 5:30PM, and we were the only people eating in the whole diner. Right around the time we were asking for our check, another couple showed up. Thank God. I thought maybe the place had been quarantined. The food and service that night was absolutely horrible. The High School kids that waiter there seemed 1/2 drunk and thought they were in the middle of a keg party. Can't blame them, they had nothing better to do as there were no people to be served. The management was rude and arrogant, as we finally realized was always the case. I mean come on, this is a diner, not some fancy well-respected restaurant. Listen, if you're looking for a great meal at about the same price plus a few bucks, head over to Portobello's across the street. If you're looking for diner food, I would recommend the Burger King in front of the Shop-Rite before I would go to the Lenape Grill again. read more

We have a large family and little kids and they always accommodate us wherever we want to sit. Salads are fresh with fresh veggies. Pancakes are delicious. Coffee drinks are excellent. I think their grilled salmon is delicious atop any salad of my choosing. The best wait staff in town. The owner has his eye on everyone to make sure it all runs well. Friendly and attentive and fast. They give my kids crayons, balloons and lollipops each time we go. Our last waiter didn't know what to do for us... Drinks were refilled early and he kept checking on us to see if we needed a thing without being intrusive. I never had a bad meal here or less than excellent service. You get great value here. We used to dine at Lenape from time to time as our son enjoys their pizza burger and his sibs like the chicken fingers. We always perceived Lenape to be a decent restaurant - nothing exciting, but okay. Well, until I went there this weekend for a breakfast treat with my younger son. While my son loved his pancakes, my omelet breakfast meal (for about $7) came with a bonus - egg shells. When I approached the (initially unpleasant) server about it, he started poking to omelet to find the egg shells, as in disbelief. And although he offered me another omelet (which, I of course did not want as I was feeling sick to my stomach from the egg shells), he never even apologized and simply walked away. But that was nothing. It got much better when I got the check... while I wasn't charged for the omelet (probably after telling a manager on duty about the egg shells), the owner found it reasonable to charge me for the toast, juice, and milk (that were part of the breakfast deal) in the amount of $7!!! When I had asked him about it his response was "but you ate some of the toast and had some of the juice - do you think you should get the food for free???" My further attempts to explain to the owner that charging a guest about the same amount for the extras that came along with the meal (which I barely touched anyway) was wrong - were futile. Well... at that point I insisted on paying the full amount and told the manager that I will NEVER EVER dine at Lenape again. While he eventually charged me only for the pancakes it no longer matters. Mishaps (such as having egg shells in ones omelet) happens; but I would never dine at a restaurant that treats its guests in such a disrespectful manner. Oh... and by the way... do you think that the owner ever bothered to apologize for serving egg shelled omelet? Of course not; and why should he?... read more

As others has said its basically a dinner with an extensive menu, we came in for Sunday brunch and all decided on breakfast fair. The tables are squashed together, but when we got there it seemed half empty and we were all in the same area. I could basically hear my neighbors conversation, but it is diner like. The food was pretty good. I got the fruit topped pancakes, the strawberries, bananas and blueberries were fresh and amazing, but the peaches on the other hand were definitely from a can. I would be happy with fresh seasonal, but I could pick them off. My companion got an omelet and toast with butter on the side - of course the toast came out with butter all over it. They make a wicked panini, and their lemon chicken soup is the best I've ever tasted. Even their veggie panini is good, The paninis come with the crispiest waffle fries I have ever had. They have a customer card, where your meals count toward points to a free breakfast or dinner, depending on how often you eat there. I've eaten there much more often for breakfast and lunch than for dinner. I haven't found any favorites on the dinner menu yet. They don't serve egg salad, which I find strange for a diner. They did serve it once as a special in a wrap with bacon and lettuce, and it was delicious. Not sure why it's not available on an everyday basis, but they have enough variety that you can always find something else to eat. The only negative is the music. The speakers are so tinny that it's almost torture listening to whatever unidentifiable noise comes out of them, and of course you can't get away from the music. Try not to sit under a speaker, especially if you are sensitive to noise. It's like an electronic mosquito under there. read more
