My bf and I went on Valentine's Day so we expected that it was going to be busy. Upon being seated we were admiring the place. The ambiance was quite nice as well as the bar. This place would be great for a date night. Unfortunately, things took a turn when we were done ordering. First off, our service didn't say anything about the specials so we found out after we ordered our food. We ordered the croquette, the udon carbonara, some sushi pieces Leona roll, and salmon carpaccio. We were informed that the sushi bar was backed up so it would take about 20-30 minutes for the sushi to come out... okay. That's fine. The croquettes came, it was good but not anything crazy. Udon carbonara was probably the highlight of the night but again not anything too crazy. Now for the sushi, I think they need to train their sushi chefs again. The fish to rice ratio is extremely off, the fish wasn't even fillet or cut right, and they use the same "Leona" sauce or their own version of ponzu sauce for almost every fish dish there. I was just so disappointed I didn't even take pictures. as I mentioned above, we were informed by our server that the sushi was held up. But it ended up being about 40 minutes for our sushi to come out and it didn't even come out all at the same time. It was one by one. Not only that but during the entire time we were waiting for the rest of our food to come out, our server didn't come by to check up on us to refill our water. We can tell she was trying to avoid our table.... And the one time she did come by was because we had to wave her down and asked her to check up on our meal. As the food was coming out, there were some things we were missing and we ended up just having the server assistant help us instead since they were bringing out most of our food. The only other time she came back again was to give us our bill. Now, I am in the service industry myself so I can say I understand how it is and also have a lot of patience. However this service was extremely underwhelming to say the least. We spent about $300 with tip so I just expected more out of the service (checking up, refilling our water, reassuring us, etc). All in all, maybe I'd give this place a try again but maybe after they have a sit down with the staffs and maybe train them again on some things. This place is beautiful and the ambiance is great, however the service and food should also live up to the expectation of the restaurant and pricing. Just sucks because I really wanted to like this place but maybe I'll try it again after some things change. I would recommend maybe going for their hot foods instead. read more

The restaurant is incredibly dark. It was difficult to read the menu or see our plates of food. The food was good but nothing spectacular. The prices are steep for the quality of food. One oyster was $17 or $19 dollars. I have had much better oysters at the Water Grill and they do not charge that much. I quite literally don't know where to start with this review! This was one of the worst dining experiences I have ever had in my life. Actually the worst! From the moment I arrived, I had booked a table at 8.15pm, the host didn't tell me my table wasn't ready she just said head to the bar and we will seat you ASAP! Walk in and it's crowded as hell and there is literally not one area to stand at the bar to wait and it's so narrow it quite literally was a fire hazard. So instead I was just shoved ever second by people trying to get by. My guest and I then ordered cocktails as we waited that were the most VILE things we had ever drank, to the point we had to send mine back as they were out of an ingredient but instead of telling me, made it anyway without it and hoped I wouldn't notice..... ummmm. 50 MINUTES LATER after several times of checking they seated us in the Sushi room where there were quite literally exposed nails on the wall and we ordered ASAP. Now I could have potentially forgiven the mass chaos if the food was good.... But my god it was dismal! Spending over $230 dollars just for 5 dishes of tiny crap sushi and an extra $100 dollars on awful cocktails I am flabbergasted. Oh not to mention the waiters literally brought the food for the next door table to us 6 TIMES asking if it was ours. We were asked how it was at the end of dinner and we obviously weren't pleased but were kind enough and the waiter informed us the reason it was so busy and OVERBOOKED was because they just received a Michelin Star........ EXCUSE ME? Did we just eat in the same restaurant, am I blind? I could not believe my ears. Never in my life have I been to a Michelin Star restaurant like this... outrageous! I will never be stepping foot in there again. If anyone has the phone number of the Michelin man that gave them a star please pass on their number to me, I would like a word! Thank You. read more

I'm giving it 4 stars because over all the food is like an 8 out of 10 and the ambiance for Studio City isn't bad. We had gone there when it first opened and our server we had at that time was well informed and great. However, this 2nd time we went, we were appalled with the service. ( we frequent sushi restaurants and I used to serve at 3 different sushi restaurants, one being Katana- so maybe I'm jaded? ) Maddie had NO idea what she was selling. Honestly, if she knew anything about the menu or what was in the dishes, her sales could be much higher than they probably are- just a guess. So we were about to get the omakase. Maddie was pleased about this because I'm sure she liked the easy $160 a person. ( 3 people total). Now this, ( this is not her fault) but the first item we get, according to her, on the omakase is a miso soup... I'm sorry- what? I've had plenty of omakases and the fact that this restaurant puts a miso soup as 1 out of 7 courses for $160 is beyond me. Immediate no. ( we ended getting WAY more food for almost the same price as the omakase, btw) Needless to say, I'm glad she told us because we would have been so unhappy with that. However, Maddie was instantly irritated that we no longer wanted the omakase. Her attitude immediately shifted to annoyed. It was obvious. When she came back to take our order, we had questions. What was this garnished with? what kind of sauce? How is this prepared? Etc- she had NO idea. She said "honestly I'm not sure- ponzu I think?" -- my jaw was on the floor. Do you work here or not? She knew simple things- like how many pieces you get... I think. But she wouldn't be able to tell me if something came with yuzu or ponzu. Or tell me that the scallop sashimi special was garnished with micro greens and yuzu koshu. To be honest, she probably doesn't even know what yuzu koshu is just based off of our interactions. Either know the menu or say "let me go find out for you". nothing. She basically "faked" her way through this entire service with bare minimum menu knowledge- almost like she could care less. That's the attitude she gave off. We get it- this is part time. I asked if the toro had anything on it, like a garnish or sauce. She said "yeah yeah- I'm pretty sure it does" - no, it did not. Just a regular ol' nigiri. It's disappointing when you expect something based off of the information received and it ends up being wrong. Honestly it was pretty bad. Know what you're selling. I've had some bad service before but never anything like this where the server literally has minimal knowledge of the menu. We were left high and dry on a lot of questions we had. It was painful for us and became the topic of our dinner- unfortunately. When we went to pay, as we were literally signing the bill, my husband asks something about valet, again: "I have no idea- no one's even asked that question before". -- it was the cherry on the cake. The level of "service" from her was a 0. Like... you sure you work here girl? Thanks for keeping my water filled though. All I can say is, if I was the manager or owner at this restaurant I wouldn't want my staff not knowing the menu and potentially missing out on sales. She had so many chances to upsell us- and honestly maybe even other tables who don't frequent sushi places like we do. Also, maybe the omakase IS amazing, but she didn't sell it well at all- so who knows. Idk, again, maybe I'm comparing this to places like Nobu and Catch; places that pride themselves on service and experience...and this ain't it! Give this girl a menu test!! Uninspired. The food is subpar for the experience they are trying to create, and the staff seemed a little checked out as well- maybe it was just an off day? My recommendation, trim down the menu, don't serve paella that isn't, paella- it was just a bowl of muscles pretty much. The wait was outrageous - some meals came in right away and some took an hour (and we had a group of people - so extremely uncomfortable when someone is already full for some time and someone still hungry and keeps waiting ). Servers did not give enough attention to the tables, like weren't looking around and checking on guests. Hostess was kind of spaced out and we didn't feel welcomed at all. I don't know what is happening here -- the food itself was quite good but I would never return because of service and overall bad taste after. If I could leave zero stars, I would. Here is the summary - the food and the service were absolute trash. The only thing they have is vibes. Do not be fooled by the positive reviews, those poor souls have never had good food in their life. OR this was the worst night in Leona's history. My fiancé and I had a reservation at 8pm on a Saturday. The hostess was friendly and seated us immediately. The ambiance was great and we were so excited to have potentially found a new date night spot - it all went down hill from here. The staff was visibly stressed and we waited 20 mins for anyone to acknowledge us and get our drink order in. Normally, I would have lost my patience but we could tell the waitress was really busy and she was trying to fix something on a check. So we didn't say anything. She came over and told us we better get our whole order in now because the kitchen is busy. My fiancé said "that's fine. Could they space it out? So we don't get all the food at the same time." And she sort of snapped at him and said "No. I can't watch the food as it comes out." Bizarre but okay. We said we would put a few things in now and then order more. We ordered the yellowtail cilantro roll, ox bao and chili garlic edamame. The yellowtail cilantro roll came out in 3 minutes. We were shocked but excited because we were starving. At the first piece we realized something was off. The rice was hard and cold. The yellowtail on top was also hard and cold. It had a lot of vinegar on it - no jalapeño sauce like described on the menu. It tasted like a subway sandwich that had been in the fridge all day. It was not tasty at all. The ox bao, was also cold like it was pre made and put in the fridge. The chili garlic - same deal. We still ordered more food. This was our mistake. The waitress never came back to our table. The manager or owner did (not sure who he was) to collect the menus and we had to flag him down to put a couple more items in. We ordered some nigiri, who can mess that up? Leona's can. The fish looked like it died twice. It was discolored and the texture looked off. Against our better judgment, we each tried a piece. It tasted worse than it looked - icy cold, fishy with hard rice. It was like they got frozen fish from Costco and cut it up, put it in the fridge to thaw it and then served it. The entire time i tried anything there, I was wondering if it would be the thing that caused food poisoning. I'm not feeling great today, will keep you posted. read more

The good: cocktails are excellent, room is absolutely stunning, service is friendly. And while others have complained about noise level we found it lively and fun. While Studio City over-indexes on Asian fusion, we're grateful for every post-pandemic opening and appreciate restauranteurs who take a risk on upscale concepts in the Valley. The less good: food came FAST -- which might be a good thing under different circumstances but was confusing and challenging this night. Because we don't mean food came "promptly," we mean absolutely everything hit table immediately and simultaneously. Cocktails, appetizers, sushi, main courses -- 100% of the meal arrived all at once and less than 10 minutes after order was placed. Equal parts impressive and terrifying, as kitchen is either working some serious voodoo or rolling sushi in advance. Our guess: both. We were looking forward to a leisurely dinner with family and got exactly the opposite -- we felt rushed and overwhelmed, and it's no exaggeration to say we could have ordered and eaten and exited in substantially less than 30 minutes had we not taken it upon ourselves to order a few more rolls just to extend the meal a bit and make it feel a little more like a night out than a... lunch break. The actually bad: given the breakneck pace, Leona's felt crazy expensive for what ultimately amounted to a fast-casual 50-minute meal. With tip and a bottle of okay sake, dinner for 6 was almost $900. That's pricey, but to be expected for a first class dining experience. But this... wasn't that. When asked, waiter confirmed "this happens a lot." The service sprint is a feature of Leona's, not a bug, and that's unacceptable given the fine dining aspirations and price tag. The upshot: Food and drink both reasonably good; not Valley's best sushi by a long shot, but mains are tasty and inventive, especially the paella. And again, rooms (there are a few) are genuinely gorgeous. Which all OUGHT to add up to a special night in a unique spot filled with food and fun. Sadly, it just doesn't. We're hopeful Leona's ownership will eat at their own joint, take stock of the issues and opportunities, and rethink their processes. A few significant tweaks would make this place pretty great. It's definitely a lively restaurant organized into multiple "rooms": the living room, patio, sushi room, but from what I gather the same menu is served in all of them with sushi room perhaps having some additional items. We sat in the "living room" - overall the vibe was pretty lively but quite noisy. Waited about 15 minutes for the menus to show up...and then another 10 for the waitress to just go "ready to order?" No drink menus, no drink order...so then we had to wait another 10 minutes for the drink menus to show up. Interesting cocktails even if the cherry blossom was too tart; but the old-fashioned didn't disappoint. We got the truffle halibut, the ceviche and jalapeño yellowtail - ok - the food has redeemed substandard service. The Ceviche was delicious with the most tender calamari I've had this side of the Mediterranean. Truffle halibut - pricey but came with a really heavy dose of shaved truffles and with a citrusy base it paired quite nicely. The jalapeño yellowtail is pretty much a staple at every sushi restaurant in LA, but the quality of fish and the "sauce" definitely stood out here. For mains we had the branzino and the pork chop. The fish was delicious even if plated on a slightly small plate with a forgettable side of mash and asparagus. The pork chop was wonderfully tender, moist and cooked to perfection. Truly one of the best ones I've eve had...again with same forgettable mash and asparagus. So - overall the food is wonderful: imaginative, flavorful, but could use some refinement on the presentation side and variety of sides that go with the protein. Service - rushed, impersonal, lacking attention - perhaps some training in basic bedside manners and service. Finally the bill: I'm OK spending good money on good food. I don't remember how much the bill was, but probably around $300 with a bottle of sake and a few cocktails. What totally rubbed me the wrong way was the gratuity choices presented on the POS device: 30%, 25%, 20%. Really? 30% tip as default top choice? For what I just described? Nah. Sure, there is a choice to enter your own amount which is what I did - a healthy 18% for a truly substandard service but I've been conditioned that anything below is being cheap. I'd love to come back for the food and stay for service. Perhaps by then Leona's will get their service kinks worked out. read more

I had read the EaterLA article about this new place and tried it out last night. First of all - it is absolutely beautiful. They have three distinct areas, each with its own feel. Beautifully decorated and fabulous ambiance. We sat in the sushi room and had one of their Omakase options. We are true sushi snobs and have eaten at all the best sushi places in the valley. We have a few we frequent. I can honestly say that this was the best sushi we've had in quite a while. The service was friendly. The drinks were delicious. We joked that we are going to come back every day. While I wish we had the time and money to come every day, I can certainly promise that we will be back - and often. It has only been open for a month, so I don't think it has been fully discovered yet. Go now before everyone discovers this place and reservations become hard to get! read more

We sat at the sushi bar and had the premium omakase for $160 per person. The quality of the food and presentation were simply outstanding and well worth the price. The Uni from Santa Barbara and Toro from Spain were the real standouts. Probably the best I've ever had, and I've eaten at some really nice sushi restaurants. The Toro melted in my mouth like butter, it was truly amazing. Halibut with shaved truffles was to die for. There wasn't a single course I didn't like, everything was great, including the cold sake that our server recommended. The restaurant is brand new, it opened just a month ago, so it was easy to get a reservation and there were many open seats. I am sure as the word of mouth gets around, that will change. The restaurant decor is lovely and they had some music playing (not very loud), which was nice. Valet parking was $10. read more
