A restaurant with perfect atmosphere and vibe, and a beautiful bar. It wasn't packed but seemed busy on a Friday night, definitely recommend making a reservation. Plating of food was great but the sushi quality was pretty mediocre for the price, which was a bit disappointing. Everything on the menu was on the pricier side but smaller in serving size. Plates I recommend trying are hokkaido scallop, yawarakant octopus, and yellowtail cilantro roll. All the cocktail options sounded delicious but but opted for cold sake which I enjoyed. Leona's was selected for me through the social app TimeLeft, which arranges dinner parties for six strangers at random L.A. restaurants. I had never heard of the place, nor do I remember seeing it whilst driving down Ventura Blvd. It's not a taggable location on Instagram. It's truly a hidden gem. The aesthetic is light and airy, modestly sophisticated. Our party of six arrived on time and were promptly waited on. Our server was excellent - attentive, friendly, knowledgeable about the menu, and very patient as my five tablemates asked a bunch of questions. Our seating area was quiet, great for a group conversation. I ordered the Cherry Blossom gin cocktail, which was fresh and zippy, but substantial enough that I sipped on it most of the evening. As others ordered more food or dessert later during our meal, I did finish the drink and ordered Leona's Old Fashioned. Both drinks were made with Japanese gin and whiskey, respectively, and while the Cherry Blossom gave a good buzz, the old fashioned was breathtakingly strong. For my entrée, I ordered the cilantro yellowtail cut roll, which also had spicy tuna and jalapeno sauce. It was good, though not enough of a meal - my focus was on being social, but if I'd been more hungry, I'd have ordered something else. They have a pretty extensive menu, including robata. So happy I came across Leona's for a great dining experience with our friends. This was our first visit and we are looking forward to go back. From th moment we walked in we were greeted by several staff and our waiter. We thought our waiter Nick was the owner because he was incredible and really took the time to explain the menu and went the extra mile to make sure we had a excellent experience. Seated in main room with bar. We had a reservation and arrived early so were first to be seated. Department store music was fun though a tad too loud. It's obvious this room can get quite loud when it's full which would be a turnoff. The room was dark but had nice ambient lighting to see menu and eat by. Excellent service from hostess who could have made us wait to the attentive waiter who was playful but professional with excellent suggestions. Sushi was very fresh and beautifully prepared. We ordered Crispy Rice (Spicy Tuna Roll) and the Leona's Special Roll ($19.) (See photo) Tasty and fulfilling. The Wasabi was lacking in bite and needed much more horseradish but that's just my taste. We also ordered the Croquettes for $14. I think this is my new favorite spot! I love how lowkey this restaurant is - seeing it from the street you wouldn't expect it to be a sushi spot. My husband and I have driven past this spot since it first opened and we finally decided to try! This restaurant has a bit of Asian, Mediterranean, and Spanish influences - which is reflected in the dishes. For it being a 'holiday' they were definitely busy and the service was a bit inconsistent, however, I truly think it's because it was just busy. Staff were all sooo nice, especially our waiter! Based off this, I know service on any regular night would be on point. What we ordered: Drinks: Smokey yuzu - perfect for the mezcal + citrus lover. Appetizers: tofu miso soup, spicy seafood miso soup, corn tempura - so good and crispy! Both miso soups had excellent flavor and were unique in their own way. Perfect for a cold night! Robata: lamb, meatballs - the lamb was a bit over cooked for my liking but the lemon brought it to another level! The meatballs were tender and the teriyaki sauce was delicious! Mains: seafood paella - nice depth of flavor from the garlic and seafood. This is totally shareable and the portion is pretty big. I went to Leona's with two friends, and I'll start by saying the vibe of the restaurant was amazing and the food itself was really good. However, the experience quickly became confusing and frustrating when it came to the bill. Before ordering, we actually calculated what our food should roughly cost. After dining, one of my friends paid without checking the bill until later and when they told me the total, my jaw dropped. It felt way too expensive compared to what we ordered. Unfortunately, my friend forgot to grab the receipt, so the next day I called to request one. When the manager called me back, the very first thing he asked was why I tipped "so low." I was shocked tipping is a personal choice, and no manager should be questioning or pressuring a customer about how much they choose to tip. He even brought it up multiple times, saying that everyone tips 20%+ and implying that mine wasn't enough. Honestly, that was very unprofessional. Once I got the receipt, I noticed multiple overcharges. For example, the menu listed nigiri at $4 per order (2 pieces). We ordered 3 albacore nigiri and 3 yellowtail nigiri, which should've come out to $12 each, $24 total. Instead, the receipt showed $60 charging $10 per order instead of $4. This wasn't just with the nigiri; nearly every item had an unexplained $1-$8 markup compared to the menu and online prices. I completely understand if prices have increased, but then update your website and printed menus so customers aren't blindsided. The lack of clarity plus the manager's attitude about tipping left a very sour taste after what should've been a nice dining experience. read more

Was so drawn into the vibe of the restaurant as soon as I walked in. They have what looked like three room. One was to the right which was more like a bar/lounge with great music, dimly lit and very date night ambiance. The middle room was was more chill and garden like. Then to the left was the sushi bar restaurant area. Three different experiences in one place. Now for the food and cocktails. You really can't go wrong with anything you order. The croquettes are a great start, yellowtail cilantro and tiradito de tai were both bomb. If you want entree type food get the miso cod and the udon carbonara. Can I just thank Michelin Guide LA for leading me here because I came with expectations and left with those expectations exceeded by our dining experience and this was only for lunch ! (Insert mind blown emoji here) Ambience: I did not expect to walk in to this beautifully decorated, modern restaurant with such an upscale vibe for a Saturday lunch with my husband. Our casual lunch to chit chat turned in to a "Day-Date" because we were so impressed with our food, the service, ambience and their most welcoming owner Frank. We sat down at a booth by the patio and were greeted by Nelly who really helped us with ordering. We decided on the Yellowtail Cilantro Roll, Spicy Albacore Roll, Shimeji Risotto & Nippon Chaufa Paella. Did I mention this is a Japanese,Peruvian fusion? You're welcome. The spicy Albacore Roll with crunchy garlic was so good but the Yellowtail Cilantro Roll with Leona's Jalapeño Sauce was probably, the best Yellowtail roll I've ever had. I'd love to go in to more detail for you about the texture, flavor and freshness but to spare your time and mine, let me just say that if you seek quality sushi or are more selective on where you eat sushi then you will be very happy dining here. I didn't have much of my husband's Paella because I was too busy enjoying my Shimeji Risotto. But there's a uniqueness to the taste of the Nippon Chaufa Paella because of the black rice and saffron amarillo aioli that made the dish delightfully tasteful. On to the Shimeji Risotto which I couldn't stop eating! The butter, fontina cheese and reggiano parmigiano packed this Risotto with flavor and I never knew Shimeji mushrooms could ever taste so good. I shared a good portion with my husband so that I can have room for dessert. I will definitely order their Shimeji Risotto again and again. Our server, Nelly suggested their Congari Banana that is defined as, "puff pastry with caramelized banana, vanilla ice cream & caramel sauce" but in my food vocabulary their Conagri Banana is just flat out ridiculously good!!! It was thee best way to end our meal. We were fortunate to have Frank give us a quick tour of the restaurant. With 3 beautifully designed dining areas, this restaurant can go from quaint and relaxing, to private party ready to a lounge and social club. Leona's gave me a "Place to be" vibe. I've been to Leona's twice and it doesn't disappoint. The sushi is delicious, on par with many LA sushi joints and the service is great. So I've been really excited about this new sushi place and I finally had the opportunity to check it out for my girlfriends birthday on a Sunday. It happened to be the first Sunday they started to have a live DJ to bring some south of France vibes. What a great suprise it was since we were there to celebrate a birthday. The design and ambiance was set for south of France vibes. The service was great and the sushi was surprising very good. We tried lots of different dishes as we were so hungry and they did not disappoint. We started with two different sashimi plates, rolls, oysters and cooked cod. I'm normally not a fan of the cod as it can be made with too much glaze that makes it too sweet for me but this cod was made perfect for my taste. We had the napoleon ice cream for desert and cake and it's one of my favorite deserts. Overall, it was a great suprise to visit on a fun Sunday afternoon. Great food and ambiance. They gave us a heads up that there was a reservation in an hour and a half, but we were in and out within an hour. Friendly staff, not sure why there are so many negative reviews, that didn't reflect our experience at all! It's a little pricey, but a great upscale spot for a date! Well done, sir. It was an early dinner (for LA at least) so there wasn't much of an issue with getting a seat, though it was quite crowded when we left at 830. There's indoor seating, which was well lit and spacious and seating in the bar with open windows to the street. Service was friendly and provided some solid recommendations. My brother had some specific orders (light rice or no onions) and our server remembered him, which was nice. On to the food. We ordered a variety of food and I've waited too long to recall everything but it was all amazing. We started with edamame and crunchy rice and moved on to a variety of sushi. Hand rolls, sashimi and the sushi tacos. It was all amazing. I'd highly recommend this place if you're up for sushi, though I didn't really have a chance to explore the rest of the menu because we were sushi focused. read more

Ah, I have mixed feelings about Leona's. Dined here on a Friday night with my family and made reservations for 8:30pm which upon arrival I realized was not necessary because the restaurant was not super busy. The ambiance was great. They have a beautiful bar and just a gorgeous vibe all around. Their menu isn't too heavy on roll options but had a decent selection of rolls, sashimis, and other Japanese-style dishes. For cocktails - we tried the lychee martini and the cherry blossom. Both were delicious and the perfect amount of sweetness. For our mains - we all shared the albacore sashimi, yellowtail cilantro roll, lobster roll, crab croquettes, spicy tuna handroll, scallop sushi, spicy tuna crispy rice, and udon cacio e pepe. Everything was delicious, especially the croquettes and udon. The only roll we all didn't care for very much was the lobster roll. The miso sauce that it was dressed in just didn't pair well with the roll itself. Everything about the restaurant was good - food, service, ambiance. So why am I giving them 4 stars? Well, I felt that the portion sizes compared to the pricing just did not add up. Portions were relatively small for a hefty price tag. I have been to plenty of other sushi spots that deliver the same quality for 1/3 of the price. So overall, we enjoyed our time at Leona's. I would say try it at least once, but personally I don't think I would be back. read more

We had the best experience at Leona's tonight for my daughter's birthday-- It was her dining choice as a repeat dinner and our first. We were welcomed -- right at the curb -- with a wonderful valet team that made our parking effortless... which is unique on Ventura Blvd. Then our hostess, at the front door, checked us in and invited us to enter (even though we were 20 min early) and off we went to our table. The cocktail and beer list was deep and classic and I started with a great Belgian triple. Our daughter and son in law arrived and off we went with ordering small bites, salads, lots of rolls, baked miso cod, so much nigiri, tempura and much more. It was a feast fitting for the birthday celebration that it was. When things couldn't possibly get any better, Frank Leon arrived table-side checking on how everything was tasting snd if we enjoyed our dining experience... we chatted about the menu and his passion for serving us-- just then our love for Leona's instantly deepened as this wonderful owner made us all feel like celebrities. Felt like if you ordered sushi in "dining room" instead of the "sushi room" you may not get the same attention/service. Just guessing from our experience in the dining room section. Again the sushi was good but have had the same or slightly better quality elsewhere, so need to differentiate somehow. Ocean Treasure at $19. Just don't do it, think it was the crab that didn't taste super fresh. Expensive and not good for what you get. The rooms...sushi, garden, and dining is a cool concept. Really well done but unfortunately I can't eat and drink them! Wish I saw more differentiation elsewhere, as being sushi focused you have a lot of competition in the valley.
