Leo's really began in 1972 as Southfield Souvlaki Coney Island by the Stassinopoulos brothers, Leo and his big brother, Pete. I first ate there in 1973 with my big brother, Jack. Today there are over 70 locations making it one of the biggest chains in Michigan. They also offer online retail. Not all the Leo's are equal. Visit each with an open mind. I can't speak for all locations, but, this one uses Koegel's hot dogs. The number one hot dog in Michigan. Their coney sauce (similar to chili sauce) is outstanding, but the buns were a disaster. Stale and cold in places. Half the bun ended up discarded. Tuesday's coney dog special is $1.99 per. I get two, Mrs. E. gets one. We then split fries or a Moussaka. Today it was fries. Leo's is so generous with the chili we can take half off the dogs and make chili fries. They have a very impressive menu featuring Greek and American dishes. Melissa was super friendly and checked on us a time or two. She brought to-go boxes and cups for our tea. I kind of like going to different Leo's locations; while their main menus are the same, they all have different specials. My sister & I went to this one after an appointment at the hospital. We both ordered iced tea and were disappointed; instead of the fresh brewed tea we've gotten at all the other Leo's locations, this one had either some kind of instant tea or it was old. In any case, it wasn't very good. My sister ordered a tossed salad with chicken. It's too bad that she doesn't like tomatoes because there were a LOT of them. But no worries, I took them from her. She also commented that there was a lot of chickn. I ordered the gyros platter special. There wasn't a description, so I expected it to be a gyros sandwich and fries. But I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was diced gyro meat, delicious hummus with a couple cucmbers & a few chick peas on it, diced tomatoes and (too many) onions, along with a grilled pita and tzaziki sauce. We both brought a fair amount of our meals home, Our server was very friendly and personable, but the service (from the kitchen, not the server) seemed a bit slow for a Leo's. I can't remember ever having a bad experience at a Leo's Coney anywhere across the Detroit metro area. It's so good that we'll seek out a Leo's specifically when we're in the mood for Coney Island fare, whether it's breakfast, lunch or dinner. So, when we moved into the Commerce area in 2019, I was excited to see we'd be living less than a mile from a Leo's. I figured it would be our spot! Well, I don't know how they do it. But their food is consistently poor, the 5 or 6 times we've eaten there. I keep telling myself, I'm never going back. Then a year or two will go by and out of convenience I'll stop in, only to be disappointed again. I've had coney dogs that were rock hard on the bottom. (I mean rock hard!) I've had chicken kabobs that were so rubbery, you could barely swallow it. Low quality preparation and execution by the cooks. Now the wait staff on the other hand, IS their greatest asset. Always nice and friendly. Well, The cashier, the regular one, is usually pretty crabby. Typical decor, the booths are getting a little raggedy in the seat cushion, but stuff like that I don't really care about. For the record, we still love Leo's and frequent the Novi/Wixom Leo's over on Beck road and Grand River when we are out that way. They always do a fabulous job. But, If you are in the Commerce area, Biffs Coney on Union Lake might be a better option, in my opinion. read more

Never again! Zero stars. I felt so sick from eating here! First of all, this place was crowded. So, the food should have been fresh with such a turn over of customers, but no, it wasn't. This place is getting quite run down. And I get itt, prices are high for everyone, but I am tired of paying for the credit card fees. It is so hard to balance between cashless places and cash preferred/ only places. I do not carry a lot of money on me. and it is really hard to know when to do so. 4% is a very high mark up, I think the restaurants take advantage and charge a premium over what they are paying to skim a profit. And it would have been alright if the food was good. The staff was kind and pleasant. No complaints with the individual who served us except for not refilling the over prices drinks. That was not cool. Once we ordered food, it took a really long time for it to come out of the kitchen, and when it did, it was cold. So where is the disconnect? Was the kitchen too busy and understaffed? Are they not cooking the food to safety standards, or did the server fail to pick up the food? The chili was super cold. It tasted a bit off and had practically no meat in it. It was all weird reddish brown sauce. If you are are going to charge more but skimp, not sure why I should eat here when there are twenty Leo's is the area. I got fried clams. It was all breading. The actual clam was the size of a skinny rubber band, and tasted like it. The fries were so disappointing. I was hoping for crispy fries to go with the chili. They were cold and soggy and came from a bag in a freezer. Not fresh and super under fried. We had to go elsewhere to get a redo for a fry fix. The chicken gyro had practically no chicken and they up-charged for a few slices of onion. Typically places to do white onion, they put in a couple salad red onions. The only decent tasting items were the pancakes but we paid for a blueberry pancake and a chocolate chip, and they maybe put in three chips and three berries in each. And they did not automatically bring syrup, we had to request it. Then afterwards I quickly felt ill. Selling me old, not so fresh, skimpy food is a recipe for disaster that I did not ask for. As far as Leo's go, they are a standard coney Coneys in gen6are not my kind of place but I do order a carry out salad from here at least once every 3-4 weeks when om on a pinch. I am a fan of the Mediterranean salad as it is mixed greens not that nasty iceberg lettuce I like it with grilled chicken and it comes with hummus and greek dressing. However they are so skimpy with olives, I have lit8never had more than 2 olives on my salad. Why even bother? But its tasty and typically ready in 10 minutes. read more

This review is long overdue. I have a lot of memories at this restaurant from middle school to high school and now in to my adult life. Michelle and the other veteran wait Staff are amazing. They know the business inside and out. Sometimes you will see the occasional new faces in today's work climate but they always work as a team. I've seen some other reviews about the food and it is a true Michigan Coney Island, not a Michelin star restaurant so the Karen's talking about bad food clearly need to call their doctors for some taste bud checks. They are also pet friendly not only to their staff but I have brought my dog in many times. The menu is comprehensive with much to choose from, but after many years my go to will be the chicken lemon rice soup, Caesar wrap, and fries. Everyone loves the chicken finger pita, but not my style. (Not bad though) In conclusion, this restaurant goes above five stars in my books, this past Summer the power went out while I was eating, and they took care of all our bills and were so apologetic for something they can't control. read more

The only reason Leo's Coney is getting one star is because the waitstaff was nice.!!! We paid $16 for ham and cheese omelette, western omelette and corn beef hash.... The hashbrowns I asked for well done, and we're actually well done, but so is everything else omelettes were WAY OVER COOKED. They were omelettes they had no filling and way overcooked and the corn beef hash that came out of the can..... My toast was the only thing they didn't over cook... Usually would make my wife and I breakfast, but she wasn't feeling well and didn't want me taking extra time to clean the pans. The waiting staff has always been good every time that I'd been there and the food is usually pretty good as well. The reason I'm only leaving 3 stars is because of the cashier that's usually there is very rude. Sometimes she doesn't even acknowledge people at all and acts too good, (which she's definitely not). She's the heavier set cashier whom I believe has a retainer. She doesn't even bother to ask if you'd like your receipt anymore, very unprofessional! I've been there numerous times while she was working and have given her the benefit of the doubt but after the last time I'd be there I must say, if you care about your business then she definitely needs to go. I would like to say that I have never felt such discrimination from a waitress in a restaurant setting my life than I have tonight. I came in with my cousins (for the sake of more description, they are white and I am not) the waitress ignored all that I said and only spoke to my cousins. When asked of our food, she only directed the question to my cousins and not myself. When asking about sauce, it was only asked directly to my younger male cousin and not I, so I went ahead and asked for some for myself and the waitress said "yeah sure" and did not return. Was promptly given the check and did not ask to give refills of our drinks. I thoroughly must recommend anyone who have a slight thought of even eating at this establishment to not go here. I paid for the meal and gave the waitress $0.01 (1 cent) tip just so that she knew I did not forget about her. I paid $8.00 plus for a chef salad at Leo's Coneys Island and it was ridiculous. When I got home and opened the box I couldn't believe my eyes. I had wet and some wilted lettuce, My 2 tomato wedges were soft and mushy, I was given one awful looking cucumber and the chopped meat was chopped and put on the salad very sloppy, last but not least the eggs were green and the pita bread was cold. When I called to report my yucky salad to the manager I don't believe it was a manager I spoke with. She was short ad very rude. Very lackadaisical waitstaff who do not acknowledge their customers at all. They are extremely rude if you can't make up your mind, and extremely unfriendly when you try to make casual conversation. Not only have I had waitresses never introduce themselves, or even greet me and my party for that matter, but I have had a waitress who openly admitted to not putting our order into the computer, which caused us to wait 30 minutes for our food, without any form of apology, discount, or sense of regret after completely ruining our visit. However she could not have ruined our visit much more than the food could have, considering my mozzarella sticks were cold on the inside and my fries were soggy. This is not just a one time occurrence either, the food here is often given to me when it is too cold to be served. I would have had a better experience heating up frozen mozzarella sticks and fries at home because I would have paid less, and waited less time. I was also extremely offended to walk in one day and order and eat, then be asked, "do you know how to tip?" yes, some teenagers do not tip very well, but it is often because servers discriminate against younger kids because they believe them already to be bad tippers, even though I am more generous than most adults I know. Teenagers are often a bit critical in their tipping because they are treated so poorly, so it is quite presumptuous to say that our bad tipping is due to a lack of knowledge, rather than the waitstaff's rude and unkind demeanor. All in all, I would not attend Leo's of Commerce if you intend to get treated as if you were in a restaurant, because not only does the restaurant have a seemingly unclean look to it, the waitstaff treats the customers as if they were attending a fast food restaurant.
