Went outdoor a ride to cabelas this am and detoured to kutztown for breakfast after hearing about this place. Easy to miss as it is tiny, but that comes with a meal made with pride. The locals were friendly to talk to when I sat at the counter, the K-town girls were very cute, as mentioned in another review, and the ploughman's special was sufficient to hold me over until breakfast the next day. I'll definitely take the ride to visit this one again with family, but will be sure to her there early so we can find a seat. read more

I have not been to Letterman's in many years but was really hungry for a good breakfast this morning. I was so very happy when I my bacon egg and cheese omelette and hash browns arrived and tasted just as good ad I remembered-- okay maybe better ! Now I remember why I thought this was one of the best places for breakfast. Large portions , fresh food and friendly service. I was also glad the college was not in town and I got a seat right away. This place has the best diner food we've ever had. We were on our way home from Baltimore and others rated this place highly on Yelp so we stopped for a late breakfast. I also rate it highly. I had a special called Hey Arnold. Two eggs on English muffins with mozzarella, ham and hollandaise sauce. It was served with sweet potato fries which were the best I've ever had. Hubby had the Miners special which was two eggs, bacon and French toast with blueberry topping. All of this for about $20. I would make a special trip to eat here again. Always a great place to stop at when I am back in the area. Down to earth people and great diner food. The people are always warm and friendly. Cash only and they aren't shy telling you how it is. It's kinda like being at your grandparents house when they've been drinking, they are real people and so are most of the patrons. If you are uppity and high maintenance then move on because you won't fit it. If you want great food and no bs. This is the place. Oh and I enjoy the signage. Try the SOS with home fries. Been a customer for over 10 years. Cheesesteak omelette is my go to, I've actually only ordered something different once. So I've eaten probably over 100 cheesesteak omelettes by now and they're still my favorite food on the planet. The hashbrowns are the best I've had, homefries are good but don't compare in my opinion. Doug is a culinary genius and the food is incredible, largest portions in town by far. I'm a night owl and usually sleep until noon so I wish the hours were different but honestly I would probably have eaten myself to death by now if I could get Lettermans whenever I crave it, so I'm thankful. read more

A 5 star is a very rare reward, with that being said, this place was great .The staff was pleasant and made us feel comfortable. 5 stars for incredible food every time! I can't believe the amount of food you get! Worth getting up early to avoid the lines. 1 star for the waitress. She was awful. Dirty looking and sloppy. The first time she waited on us she was wearing a knit hat thing that looked like it hadn't ever been washed. Spilling coffee and not wiping it up, had her finger in a water glass and slopped it all over the counter at my place and again didn't wipe it up. Yelling at the other waitress and cook. Best diner for breakfast for miles and miles around Kutztown. Great friendly waitress. Helped my 92 yr old mother pick out something special from the menu. She recommended the stuffed french toast with baked apples and whipped cream. She loved it and had a wonderful time at the diner. We both walked out with boxed leftovers and very full stomachs. I was a very loyal customer for many many years until about a year ago. For medical reasons I was tube fed and when I was allowed to have food by mouth it was one of my first places I wanted to go. I was berated for not going there lately. I tried to explain but was met with a sneer and a chuckle. I figured i caught a bad day for the owner. The next time i took my family there i was talking to my wife and and was interrupted by him again with his own opinion and basically verbally slapped. The last time I went in I was wearing a sports team shirt and was ridiculed by the owner. I considered him a friend and nicely told him he has a "problem" if you catch my driftand I wouldnt be back. His remark was he didnt care he had more than enough business. He asked if I ever thought people like me were the reason he has a problem.and to top it off he has started to nastily bash other businesses and use phrases like snowflake and liberal assh*le. 3 strikes I'm out as a patron and a friend. Zero stars. Great portions just be careful if your conversation topics and keep your opinions to yourself. read more

This is honestly my favorite diner around. The food is great, my personal favorite it an everything bagel with egg bacon and cheese. They also have a huge menu so you won't be left out. The cook is funny and always seems to be having a conversation with someone. Overall you have to try it at least once, it's much more than your typical diner. Also to the people who complain about the atmosphere you need to need to realize this is not your mothers kitchen so don't expect to be treated as your the only patron. Letterman's is my go-to place for breakfast or an early lunch if I'm anywhere near the Kutztown area. There are some things to be aware of going in, however. The short-order cook, who owns the place, who manages the staff, who is involved with the local fire department, is a busy guy. He's good people, but its easy to take his focus on things besides customer service as cold or dismissive. That's not the case though, if you luck out and get in when he's not swamped to the gills he adds quite a bit of flavor to the experience. The building itself is small, everything but the surplus storage is in one area. Airplane coach-section bathrooms and what amounts to a hallway with a few bedside-table sized eating areas along the outer wall and a bar in the center, behind which is the 'kitchen', which is part of the same room. I wouldn't take a party of more than four - two at a table (the maximum size of any table service) and two at the bar next to it. Three at a table would block ingress/egress. This is compensated by the fact that no one who goes in solo will have a hard time striking up a conversation with staff or the other folk's in bar seating. The setup *can* make for a cold dining experience if you end up next to the front door during the winter or early spring / late fall. If it's cold enough that you're wearing a jacket, leave it on for a few minutes after you come in until you're sure you won't need it. It is a self-seating establishment. Don't wait to be seated, if the waitress(es) are busy they may not see you there for a bit. I've seen reviews here where people are disappointed at how long it took to get assigned a seat. Know going in that you're on your own there. If everything is already taken, come back later, or check out Mark's Steakshop or Spuds down the hill on the main drag. The food is greasy. I like it, but it's not 'classy'. The menu is huge, I'd recommend almost any of the omelettes. The ones with sausage or sweet and sour sauce are universally good. You will almost certainly have another meal left over for later though, as the portions are substantial. Describing them as 'huge' probably isn't inappropriate. Two adult males can feed themselves off one omelette platter, which brings the price point to a more than reasonable level. As a teenager/ early 20 something I never left hungry. I may have cleaned my plate once. Be sure to strategize your consumption once you get your meal, as you probably won't get through everything. I've been there during a drop-in health inspection, and gotten to witness the whole thing firsthand, which as someone outside the food service industry is neat. They left satisfied and happy, and the Diner gets good ratings from the board, despite their older and somewhat greasy appearance. Honestly though, it's no dirtier than a Waffle House, and I've never seen Doug (the cook/owner) compromise a cooked meal by exposing it to anything that has touched raw meat/eggs. That might be the best way to determine if you'd like Letterman's. It's like the best possible Waffle House, with a better and larger menu. If WH scares you for it's up-front grilling, or the closeness of it's customer seating, or the "I'm serving you food and fulfilling your needs but I'm also a person" waitstaff, this probably isn't the place for you. Bring cash. Plan on ~$13 per person, or per pair if you're close enough to share food. **EDIT** I've noticed few comments about Doug yelling at his staff. I've never seen it, but I'd go out on a limb to defend him as it seems extremely out of his character from what I've witnessed. The waitresses are mostly college-students, so there's a highish turnover rate. I've had a few less-than-stellar waitresses, but I haven't seen them stick around like the good ones do. I *have* heard him have a sharp word or two with a member of his staff, so there's probably some 'escalation of force' at play where he doesn't just snap to yelling at them right off the bat. Considering that it's him and two staff members running the whole show at times, I can imagine him being brought to the point of barking if they're busy and he's not getting the kind of work he needs out of his crew. But, again, I wasn't there. read more
