These are the NICEST people. First time, and waited outside as it's a small place that fills up fast. Server came outside with a coffee pot to ask if we wanted coffee while waiting. If any place in the area deserves an episode on DDD it's Letterman's. Easily the best breakfast around! You most likely will take a doggie bag home, as the portions are large. Just watching Doug cook is an experience. And the staff (college kids working their way thru school) are so friendly and nice. DO NOT SUPPORT THIS ESTABLISHMENT! The owner is verbally abusive to his waitstaff. If I were solely rating the food, Letterman's would have 3 stars. However, customer experience is an important part of dining out and my experiences at Letterman's were horrifying. The first time I ate at this diner, I felt like the entire place was giving me funny looks, as I was the only person of color in the place. The second and final time I visited Lettermans, I still felt very uncomfortable as the only person of color and the only female in the place. As I sat down to order, I could hear and see the owner/chef verbally abusing a waitress because she forgot an order of fries. I understand the owner needs to reprimand mistakes; screaming bloody murder at your waitstaff in front of all of your customers is not the way to do it. and, really, is a missed side of fries that big of a catastrophe? I know the food is good, but it is not good enough for me to support someone who treats his waitstaff so poorly. read more

We went here for a nostalgic diner experience, found an old diner resting on its laurels. The facility is poorly ventilated, with limited outdoor air and plenty of smoke from poor quality cooking oils. There are requirements in dining facilities regarding exhaust airflow rates and per person outdoor air flows that are surely failing here. Expect to be thermally uncomfortable and to smell like biodiesel when you leave. While the diner has some history, it hasn't been preserved. What should be nostalgic and retro is actually decrepit. If you want to keep your appetite, don't go to the rest rooms. The exhaust fan in there is caked in dirt and there is some kind of stain in the sink. If you do go to the washroom, be sure to bring some quarters for the condom dispenser! There was a short wait for a seat, as expected, but then we waited inside for approx. 12 minutes for a table to be cleared or to even be acknowledged by the waitstaff. Pro tip, a little "I'll be right with you, let me just clear this table" goes a long way. Communication, folks. Once we sat, put in an order and waited another 50 minutes for the one cook to prepare it. Also, a party of 4, 2, and 2, who had arrived after our party of 2 were served before us. We ordered omelettes. Food quality is exactly what you would expect for a diner. Conventional grade meats, cheese, potatoes. The pricing is maybe 10-15% more than what one might expect to pay for an omlette but the portions are large. If you are interested in large portions of mediocre diner food in an uncomfortable, outdated diner with poor service and questionable sanitary practices, stop on by! read more

Went to Kutztown, for an antique radio show..... & wound up finding a gem.. We had breakfast two days in a row, as the first time was Sooooo good. The IMO best of class omelets are #1 Wild Horse, Texas Pete, and the Scrapple.. wow what good flavor, and the size of the servings plates.. I'm a big guy who can do "Man VS Food", but these were close :-) just plain old fashioned good. The grill guy was basically "Dancing" to keep up with the orders. Within the past few months they redid the menu for Letterman's and the prices shown here on Yelp are no longer accurate. Instead of the average specials and omelettes costing in the $5.65 range, they are now in the $8.10 range. But you know what? It's still a deal! And it's still one of my favorite places for breakfast in Berks County, tied with Tomcat Cafe (Sinking Spring, PA). I've been to Letterman's Diner at least 6 or 7 times and have always had a good meal. I've never been there for lunch, just for breakfast. If anything, with the higher prices the portions have become LARGER. Any of the breakfast omelettes will satisfy me for a total of three breakfasts if I add an egg or two to the leftover fixins from the third day. They're really *that* big! read more

The slogan really rings true 'Letterman's Diner--because everywhere else just sucks!" I still drive all the way there from Philly just for breakfast sometimes. Breakfast is insane. Humongous portions, you will not eat for awhile and good luck finishing your plate in one sitting. My husband got the cheesesteak omelet and really the egg is just there to wrap the huge amount of filling. If you like rye bread, get rye toast with your breakfast. So yummy. The last time we were there, 08/24/12 we went for lunch. My husband had the sausage steak sandwich, which is just sausage instead of steak meat but full of sliced sausage, peppers, onions, sauce, cheese. He loved it. I got the burger with mushrooms and onions. Huge whole mushrooms and just right grilled onions overflowed the sandwich, Massive beef patty on a grilled bun. So yummy. To top it off we split an order of fries. Now talk about fresh, he called for a potato from the crazy back of the diner and sliced it right there before frying. Who does that? We came here early after a thunderstorm motivated an early clean up while camping. What a find. The service, atmosphere and food were all stellar. The place is old timey and spotless, a rare combo. The waitress was on it and the food, so delicious and yes, big portions! I was shocked that the counter was almost full at 5:00 AM on a Sat, then saw the other reviews. Great spot, just go. Me and my girlfriend went to this place for breakfast because we were in the area camping. We saw it was on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives so we felt compelled to go. The place is really small but in a good cozy way, it is like an old train car converted into a diner. We sat at the counter. The menu is a bit overwhelming but again, in a good way. I ordered steak and eggs. The portions at this place are huge. It came with an 8 oz steak, 3 eggs(I got em over easy), a side of sour dough toast, and a big mound of hashbrowns. My girlfriend got an omelette. I forget the name exactly but it was the biggest omelette I have ever seen. It was filled with ground beef, coleslaw, french fries, onions, american cheese, and some other stuff. Instead of home fries she chose these small round potato hash brown things with chives, very delicious. If you are in the area definitely go to this diner! read more

I want to go back to Kutztown just to eat here. Recognize that you either sit at the counter or tables for 2, so this is not the place for a family reunion. I had the sausage gravy on home fries and my husband had some sort of omelet on the specials board with everything but the kitchen sink in it. He didn't eat again that day - and he ate the entire thing, so it had to have been good. My sausage gravy was as good as, or better, than what I would make. While I might have preferred it on nice fluffy biscuits, the home fries were a great alternative. Sit at the counter - watching the griddle chef is worth the price of admission. read more

If it's true that good things come in small packages, then Letterman's Diner fits the bill! I discovered this Kutztown treasure less than a year ago, and I have been back almost a dozen times! Doug, Josh, April and the rest of the Letterman's crew pump out the biggest, best and most inventive breakfasts you will find in the Lehigh Valley...or just about anywhere else. The atmosphere is fun and lively. The seating is very limited (about 20), so you will probably end up getting to know the people sitting near you, but that is part of the experience. It is the only restaurant in the Valley that I will gladly wait in line to get a seat. 30+ varieties of omelets, fresh smoked meats, thick style toast - what more could you ask for? And the staff is a blast! And don't forget their lunches. They make one of the best burgers to be found in the area as well as their enormous and inventive steak sandwiches.
