    beef chow mein, bone-in beef

The chow mein is AMAZING!! so much flavor can't believe they offer free unlimited refills on the noodles! honestly, the portion is already big enough that a refill isn't needed, but I appreciate it. Limited seating and can get pretty busy. The broth of the soup wasn't that flavorful, but the beef was tender for a reasonable price. Big portions for a good price, especially for college students!

I'm not the prototypical hand-pulled noodle slurper you would see near the UC Berkeley campus. I'm well past my Cal undergrad days, and let's just say I wasn't that Asian ethnocentric about what I ate back then. Now and then, I find myself willing to try spots of burgeoning popularity that attract youthful foodies to see whether they justify the crowds. This new eatery piqued my curiosity because I heard good things about the San Mateo location. I walked in when the place was bustling. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to order at the counter, but then a server immediately seated me at the only available table for two. The rest of the tables appeared to be populated with students, mostly Asian but not exclusively. It took me a couple of minutes to figure out there was a bar code on the table. Once the menu popped up on my smartphone, I was immediately overwhelmed by the number of choices. Since I wasn't in a soup mood, I went for the &15.99 Stir-Fried Pork with Black Fungus Noodles (Photo 9). I was surprised how large the portion was. The pork and wood-ear mushrooms provided strong umami, while the cabbage, red peppers, onion, and leeks added variety to the texture and fullness to the flavor. The star of the show laid underneath, the flat knife-cut noodles. Thick and chewy. Tasty and abundant enough to take most of it home. FOOD - 4 stars..,those noodles were substantial, and the rest worked well around them AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...fairly tight space SERVICE - 4 stars...very efficient crew here TOTAL - 4 stars...get the signature knife-cut noodles if you can handle the carbs RELATED - Exploring Berkeley? $15.99 Braised beef noodle soup: wonderful. Deep flavor, filling. $9.99 Cucumber with Black Fungus: garlicky, light, refreshing, and filling. Can eat again.

They say they have unlimited noodle refills but we could barely make it past the first bowl! Solid Chinese noodle place by campus. I got the braised beef noodles. The bowl is a decent portion and is straightforward - beef, noodles, bok choy, and soup. The braised beef was delicious - great texture and great flavor. The knife cut noodles had delightful chewy soft texture. We shared the cucumber wood ear appetizer/side which had the most delicious garlic soy dressing. The restaurant is your typical Berkeley campus-adjacent eatery - quick, casual, straightforward, and just opened in the last year.

Free refills on noodles. Really great deal. Machine cut, even flat noodles. I got the lamb noodle soup. The dumplings were good, and it was cool having soy sauce. Xlb sauce, and chili at the table. I wouldn't say I was totally impressed by the taste of the soup but a good quick cheap meal is all it is. Service is friendly and fast. I think they try to make you as comfortable as possible, even giving WiFi access.

I am jealous of all the college kids that come to UC Berkeley. If I would have known about Li's Knife Cut Noodle years back, I would have ditched UCLA in a heartbeat and came to UC Berkeley instead. I am a huge noodle person and my standard is quite high. This hidden gem surprisingly met my standard. The knife cut noodle is freshly made. I ordered the beef rib noodle soup and the entire dish was very savory. The meat falls right off of the bone. For the price you are paying, the portion size was more than enough. I honestly couldn't even finish it (makes me wonder who could possibly order the free noodle refill). I also recommend the side dishes like the lamb skewers and the cucumber salad cold dish. Overall the ambiance is very cozy. It is a smallish restaurant, but you do get seated pretty quickly. Service here is fast, people don't stay for long, they tend to finish their noodle and leave. If you are in the area and have some noodle craving, this place would hit the spot!

This place is delicious. I am not sure I really like the ordering system but we were lucky enough to have a person come to our table and help, pretty much took the order so not sure if that is normal or not since it says you have to place order on phone. Food was as good as it looked. What is crazy to me is they seem to have an free noodle refill on a lot of the noodle bowls. That is a great deal but the first bowl is huge and I can barely finish it. The thought of another bowl seemed crazy but maybe others have bigger stomachs. Maybe next time I will be up for the challenge.

I came here on a weeknight for a casual dinner. It's a no frills casual Chinese noodle shop. You can see them slicing the noodles fresh and stir frying up your food as you wait for your order. The restaurant is filled with UC Berkeley students grabbing a bite post studying or studying at the tables. Food is pretty inexpensive and large portions (they give you lots of noodles,) you'll leave stuffed or with leftovers. The atmosphere isn't quiet or super noisy, just a bustling kitchen. Great food, can't wait to return.

Pretty cozy spot with a good amount of seating and also offering takeout Super good portion sizes, pretty decent noodle textures (leans slightly over done but noodles are wider so doesn't become an issue). The flavor is on the lighter side too but hits the spot! They do unlimited noodle refills (if you finish), but I couldn't even finish more than half. Does not apply to potato noodles though They have chili oil in the side if you like your noodles to have stronger flavors. The Chinese burger was a bit oily on the meat and the bun was on the softer side, would've loved a little more seasoning on the meat. This reheated really well though if you're planning take out! Beef roll pancake was solid, pancake leans in the puffier side!

amazingggg knife cut noodles in a casual setting - free noodle refills! i love chinese noodles and the texture of these are so on point. they're nice and chewy, super flavorful, and they don't skimp on the toppings. the service was attentive and quick. my friends ordered the braised beef noodle soup& pork intestine noodle soup, and i got the tomato egg & pork dry noodles. my tomato and egg was so delicious and saucy. it really reminded me of my mom's cooking, so i loved it of course. there was plenty of egg & pork and the dish was overall very flavorful. all of the dishes come with so much food, including the meat, but they also give free noodle refills if you finish it! such a good value and well done dishes, i can't recommend it more.

Quick service, was seated quickly. Small interior but well lit and you order via QR code on the table. Food also came out very quickly Noodle soup itself was ok but a decent price ($16). Would recommend getting knife cut VS regular noodle as knife cut had better texture. Broth itself was not as flavorful as expecting. Meat was fairly tender but not a lot of flavor either. For the price and if you're in the area, this is a decent place to go to

Enjoyed our DD delivery from here: - generous portions - still hot - pig ears, really good, fresh scallions and cilantro, would definitely double order this - chewy noodles, maybe a whee thick? - enjoyed the garlicky sauce and the variety of veg on the noodles, pork was okay - spicy duck necks, quite a punch and very star anise flavor forward Satisfying and great to share!

Finally another hand pulled noodle place in the East Bay! This Berkeley location is the restaurant's second location, with the first one being in San Mateo. Li's is known for their knife cut noodles AND unlimited refills on soup and dry noodle orders, say less!! I was very excited to try the food at this location to see how it stacked up against their San Mateo location. Located half a block from UC Berkeley's campus, parking can be tricky. Allow extra time for parking and with it being so close to campus, expect longs lines as well! Got to the restaurant at 4:45 and was the second group in line behind a party of 6. Literally a minute after, 10 additional people got in line. If you're not in the first wave of seating, you'll be waiting 30+ min for the second wave. The whole time I was seated, there was a line out the door. After I left, still a line. Walked around for an hour, passed by the restaurant, and there was still a line out the door! [+1 star] opened earlier than planned! Hours are 11:30am-3pm and then 5-9pm. They opened doors at 4:50pm! Not sure if this is a regular thing with this location, but the San Mateo location never opened doors early. [+1 star] well designed space. The restaurant space is really narrow but the tables are spaced out enough to not feel too close to the table next to you. With that being said, the table only has 3 sets of tables for 4 (two sets in the front and one in the back). The remainder of tables is set up for 2 people. If you're a group of 6 or bigger, my guess is that you'll prob be sitting in the back as that seemed to be the only table of 4 that had enough space to maneuver and add an extra table without being in the way of staff. [+1 star] easy ordering and fast service. Tables are equipped with QR codes to easily order your food. But staff is still readily available if you have any questions. Food came out within 5 min of ordering and the soup was HOT! [+1 star] big portions and flavorful food. I ordered the E.01 which is their most popular (braised beef noodle soup). I paid an extra $3.99 for extra bok choy and $2.99 for marinated egg - portions did not disappoint. Like the San Mateo location, they did not skimp on the noodle portion. I didn't even get a chance to get the free noodle refill because I was so full from the regular portion already! Beef was cooked well also. [-1 star] noodles were not al dente. With the noodles being what they're known for, my noodles in my soup were quite soft and not al dente. I thought it was because the noodles were sitting in the hot broth which contributed to the texture. I asked to try my partner's food because he had ordered the dan dan noodles. It was the same soft texture! So that was disappointing and not like their San Mateo location. I was hoping I wouldn't be that full so that I could order the free noodle refills to see if they were also overcooked, but alas that was a no go. I'll be back to give it another try!

I ordered through a tablet where I ordered and paid first. Refreshments were a plenty with my own pitcher of water! I ordered the house special noodles with bone ribs, spicy, and also the cucumber salad. Both were amazing!! The cucumber was worth the $7.99 since they use large portions of high quality cucumbers. The broth of the noodle soup was amazing also! Never, have I had Chinese inspired noodle soups like this before. It was rich and deep with flavor. The dried peppers and the nuts gave it a good texture and you can taste the freshness of the noodles. The bone on Ribs were so tender and they gave a generous amount. So perfect! All in all, I totally recommend this spot! I don't know any spot in the San Joaquin county that even comes close to this. Great job!

We popped in on a Sunday, right before 11, but unfortunately they were late to open the doors by about 5 minutes. Once they did open the doors, we found the tempura options weren't ready so we had to stand to the side and wait a little longer for them to get those out. They had several posters and signs up advertising the new Tomatama curry, which I really wanted but when I ordered, the employee informed me they don't offer that sauce anymore. I let her know all the signs outside say they do.. she said they didn't realize that and they have to be replaced. She was really nice, but that was a bummer. She said I could sample the sauces they do have though, so that was the consolation prize. It did help me choose between their normal curry or the new Bolognese. After you choose the udon option you want, they make your bowl and give it to you on a lunch tray, along with a paper container to put your tempura options. I went with the Big Chicken ($5) and sweet potato ($2 something). You can top your bowl with as much tempura flakes and green onions you like, which is nice because I love me some green onions. At the end, the cashier will ring you up and then you find your seat. The dining area is nice. It's well lit, aesthetic but we haaaaate the chairs with a passion. There is no back support unless you sit in a booth. I really like that all the utensils, napkins, to go items, tempura sauce, etc are all available to grab as needed. I also like that they have chili powder! A must for us spicy eaters. The tempura sauce is rich, and flavorful. A little sweet, but it balances the tempura well. They also have katsu and gyoza sauce in packets. Pro tip - use the larger cups instead of the plastic sauce cups to dispense the tempura sauce, so that it's easier to dip! Wow this was long winded, but onto the food. The regular size bowl will have you full but you can opt for a Large for a couple bucks more. My bolognese was sooooo creamy and savory, and made even better by adding the chili powder and a couple spoons of the tempura sauce. Don't ask me why, it just works. I don't know if it's just a seasonal item, but hopefully not, as the sauce works. I like that i clung to the noodles well too but def get yourself a spoon to help ladle the meat alongside each bite of noodles. The big chicken isn't that big lol But it's basically 1 chicken thigh. I appreciate the dark meat, as it keeps the meat juicy. The sweet potato had the perfect batter on it, but tbh I probably could have gone without another starch. I had a sip of the Creamy broth and the Nikutama my sisters had. Creamy broth was savory and creamy, but it didn't have a bold enough flavor for me. The nikutama is sweet af.. way too sweet for me. But i liked how tender the beef was. There's street parking, free on Sundays. I wouldn't wait in line to eat here, but for a quick, comforting meal, this will hit the spot without breaking the bank.

It's in a modern building in the heart of downtown Berkeley and feels spacious and clean inside. They have a digital ordering system for takeout and clear signage for where to line up if you're dining in. I pretty much always get the Nikutama, and the recipe has been consistently solid. The tempura at most Marugame locations is just average in my opinion, but it does taste better when you ask them to fry a fresh piece for you, even if it means waiting a couple of minutes. My biggest issue was the service during my last lunch visit. There didn't seem to be any problem with the kitchen or food prep--everything was already made and ready to be assembled. The delay was entirely at the ordering/plating station, where the employee putting bowls together was moving painfully slowly and seemed completely unable to keep up with a very standard lunch flow. What made it more frustrating was that other employees clearly saw the line building and did not step in to help. A massive line formed behind me, and several of us waited around 10-25 minutes just to order, even though the restaurant itself didn't seem that busy. It honestly felt like everyone was stuck on their own individual task while customers were left waiting unnecessarily. I'd still come back because the food is reliable but would immediately walk away if I saw the same employee working as this visit was genuinely frustrating. Management should make sure staff are properly trained and that the team actually supports each other during lunch service, because one inefficient person at the front can completely slow down the entire experience. Update: Popped back in on 7/8/26 around 1pm. Same employee working. Huge line. Only 2 parties seated. Line did not move after waiting 5 minutes so I had to walk away. Doubling down on my recommendation to re-hire or re-train this staff member.
