Came with my husband about a week or more ago. Always thought the building looked cool and wanted to try it. Even better they serve food we thought it was just a bar. I ordered the lamb burger. I've had other lamb burgers, and definitely, this wasn't on the better end of lamb burgers. The French fries were great. Had a cup of shrimp bisque soup. I've had lobster bisque, and let's just say it should stay that way. Husband had the chilequiles he ate all of his because he was really hungry but he said it was okay. He didn't care or the verde salsa and only had one plastic cup to put on it. There were garbanzos and other kinds of non-traditional ingredients. For it being a bar, the cocktail menu was pretty limited. I've been here for both dinner and brunch. I would definitely recommend coming here for dinner but not so much for brunch. I made a reservation for brunch on a Sunday morning and we were seated immediately but a waiter didn't stop by our table for a really really long time. Another guy ended up taking over our table cause our assigned waiter never showed up. I ordered the eggs Benedict and honestly was extremely disappointed. The poached eggs were hard boiled which is a huge no no. Their version of eggs Benedict was also on a rounded piece of toast instead of an English muffin. I did like the side of spinach and thinly cut fries though. I will say the thinly cut fries are an acquired taste because my friend got the same dish and she was not a fan of them. I really feel like this should be 3 1/2 stars, but I'm rounding up because I'm on the fence. Liberty Bar is a beautiful spot that has a designated parking lot besides the building, and across the street. They had one of the best happy hours ever, which is why I frequented this place. It has changed slightly, but it's still solid. They have tons of appetizers at reasonable prices during happy hour. One of my favorites is the goat cheese con piconcillo. It's served with a hearty portion of cheese & toasty bread. It's sooo good, but I love goat cheese. They also have some pretty delicious calamari that is battered in a cornmeal batter and served with a smoky sauce (the last time we got this, it was way too greasy though). The minguichi, essentially queso, is also great. I'm sure you can see my fondness for cheese. Where they miss the mark sometimes is the service. I have at times had really good service here (friendly, attentive, checking often without being overbearing) but it seems they don't always have enough servers to cater to their patrons and we often have to wait a while for refills, to order drinks, etc. Another gripe is there are no blinds or curtains on the windows, and when the sun is setting it can get REALLY hot and the sun just beams down on you. I'm not sure of the reasons they don't have them for aesthetic reasons, but it is pretty uncomfortable. I had fond memories of Liberty Bar from a visit several years ago and thought I'd give it another shot. I made reservations since it's Saturday evening and I'm used to tight places and the need to make reservations even for one person. Upon arriving, I checked in and was made to feel awkward for even making a reservation when it was me. The hostess escorts me upstairs and takes me to a dining area. She stops and asks me to wait. I thought it was because a table wasn't ready and was going to offer to take a seat at the bar. Instead, I see her talking to a party of two who had arrived. Odd service. She comes back for me and seats me in another part of the house that was less crowded and hands me a menu. The waiter arrives and ask what I'd like to drink. Is there a drink menu I asked. Annoyed that I didn't get one he goes to look for one after which the hostess arrives with one. He comes back when one a minute too late. (Poor coordination) I take a peak and he comes to take my order. Cider and asked about the specials I saw on the chalkboard. Yes, there is crab cake, a red fish with asparagus, and a pasta with scallop and shrimp (but he notes they're out of scallops, so extra shrimp. I asked got the fish and we go from there. He stops by afterwards to let me know he misquoted and the veggie is spinach and mushroom. I don't discriminate on veggies, so all good. The food arrives fairly quickly. The rice is delicious and fish is cooked well, with good flavor. The spinach and mushroom had a good garlic flavor but some of the spinach was less than sauteed (still hardish leaf). Overall, I enjoyed the food and thought they did a nice job. The bill came and I was a bit surprised to see how expensive half a fish was. They should make menus for the specials (would help staff remember things and not have patrons prompt the inquiry on specials) or write the price on the chalkboard. This trip didn't make the mark. The experience lacked. There are other restaurants in the neighborhood that I walked by on my way over that had larger crowds, a suggestion that they might be more worthwhile. read more

I loved how the relleno tasted more traditional and lighter than the typical battered fried ones you find in most restaurants nowadays. Not to mention, it was only $5 during happy hour. The salmon dish was also great. Very light and healthy tasting. I loved the cilantro sauce that came with it. It's flavors are perfectly balanced: just the right amount of sweetness from the cranberries, body from the cream sauce followed by spicy heat. The review is regarding brunch. Everyone in our party of six loved their brunch entrees, including the huevos rancheros, simple breakfast plate, quiche and the fabulous french toast. My savory quiche with leeks and cherry tomatoes was the perfect fluffy texture and was so tasty! The side salad was a beautiful mix of leafy greens and house-made pesto dressing. I also enjoyed the half portion of the french toast, topped with a pile of fresh fruit and accompanied by real maple syrup. Their orange and grapefruit mimosas are made with fresh squeezed juice. Even the iced-tea was great. The building was a historic convent and the exterior reminds you of this. I expected to come back from Texas having had the best BBQ or tacos, but instead, it was the handmade fettuccine from Liberty Bar. It was so simple with just olive oil, thyme and parmesan, but the handmade noodles did not need much and spoke for themselves with flavor. I devoured the entire thing and wanted more. I discovered Liberty Bar thanks to a friend who works there. The restaurant is located in a beautiful old historical building whose facade is painted pink, and the interior is also a bit chic, all while remaining casual and accessible. The staff is courteous and the service is usually quick. Their menu is large enough to please a variety of palates, including my own which happens to be vegetarian. I had their salad followed by their homemade fettuccine alfredo. The salad was good and fresh, filled with arugula, topped with vinaigrette and mangos. The pasta was indeed freshly made, as indicated by its thin, firm and doughy texture, and the sauce was creamy and tasty. The desert, a custard, was also quite good, and everyone at the table who had a bite approved of it. My experience at Liberty Bar was very positive. The reason why I'm giving it four stars instead of five is simply because the restaurant's identity is not clear, as in, it's not initially clear what it's about cuisine-wise and culture-wise when you walk in. It's honestly super rare for a place to cook salmon go a certain temp. Something I was not a fan of was the price of the OJ ($4 for a 4 oz. glass) and the service. It was a beautiful day outside and we really wanted to sit outside, but their tables were all turned upside down. It looked disheveled, but ok, we went inside. The sign inside read "go upstairs for service". My friend has trouble walking, but we did it anyways because a lot of places were closed; but if you have a dining room downstairs, why not use it?? In any case, we asked what the draft beers were and the waitress couldn't tell us. Why not put it on a paper menu? We ordered nachos and they were terrible; the queso didn't even look like cheese; it looked like a curdled condensed something with something in it. I couldn't tell you what the other dips were. The chips were incredibly greasy; they were so shiny with grease. I've never been so disappointed to eat and drink somewhere. Gosh, how do you mess up a simple queso, and in San Antonio of all places. There's so many good places to go in San Antonio, we'll just do better at planning ahead next time. read more

I really do like the Liberty Bar! Don't get confused by the name. It is a restaurant, not a bar. It is located in a funky pink building not too far from the blue star. I was first introduced to this place at a Yelp elite event. I thought the place was pretty cool and loved the bacon pizza we sampled. A couple of months later, I was doing a bike tour with a friend and needed a stop to relax and recharge in the middle of the trip. It just happened that we were near the Liberty Bar so I suggested going in for a quick bite. I was pleasantly surprised that they actually had a second floor for dining which I didn't know of the first time I was there. I really liked the setup and the cool decors. The hostess asked if we walked here b/c we looked all sweaty and tired from biking for several hours in the Texas heat. We told her that we had been biking. We weren't treated any differently than other customers even though we looked like we just got out of the gym. If anything, we were provided with outstanding customer service. They sat us quickly and our waiter got us ice cold water which was much needed at the time. We ordered a gourmet pizza to share which was $11 for four ingredients. We chose cheese, bacon, basil and something else that I cannot remember. But it was super delicious!! Our waiter was so nice that he even refilled our water bottles for more biking we were going to do later! I have yet to come back for a more proper meal here. I have to start off my saying that every meal I've had here except for ONE has been excellent. Very flavorful and beautiful presentations. I like that they have several rooms to dine in and the full, long bar that never seems to be too crowded. I hate crowded bars and fighting for the bartender's attention while trying not to piss them off or be rude because they hold your buzziness in their wet, salty, working hands. But I digress . . . My one terrible meal was when I met a few friends from Austin there on a weekend during the day. We had a few kids and grandma, us girls and some husbands. We all ordered separately and didn't realize that we all ordered the calamari so every time an order came out we all thought it was ours. I was served last as is my fortune. After all that anticipation my calamari turned out to be a big frozen ball of mush, crispy on the outside. That in itself could be called an amazing feat of cookery but it was really nasty trying to pry a tentacle loose from the grips of freezer burn. They took my plate away and deducted it from my bill therefore leaving me with calamari cravings for the rest of the week. Very sad indeed. Otherwise, I have had great food. Service . . . not so great now and then but it's ok. The one thing I can't put my finger on may be that this place, while appealing, perhaps, lacks a little bit of soul. Servers are a bit cold. Never a big warm smile. It's all tepid. That may be ok for some people but this is South Town. People are happy there. I may be over-analyzing but I just want to feel welcomed when I walk in there, not like another person that requires to have my basic food needs met. We tried a combination of Old Fashioned with rye varieties, Boulevardier, wines and beers. The bar was able to handle each request with aplomb. Appetizers were varied and we found several that met our varied group's needs. Cheese plates, steak tartare, etc. The salads and pizzas were also popular with our group. We liked the fact you can customize the ingredients on each pizza. The wild game selection on the menu was surprising. It included quail, boar sausage and venison sausage.
