This is a breakfast/lunch spot with a nod to a Greek diner... lots of Greek options, normal breakfast fare and sandwiches. We sampled a typical breakfast of pancakes with bacon which was very good. Pancakes were fluffy and bacon crisp. Coffee is a huge disappointment however, it is very, very weak. Two of us sampled the Greek specialties... a gyro and a chicken souvlaki. Both were disappointing -- there was plenty of meat in both but chicken seriously under seasoned and not grilled much. The sandwiches, which typically have sliced onions and tomato salad, were lacking that crunch and acidity. Instead, they were covered in a very thick tzatziki. Again, the tzatziki lacked seasoning . It was way too thick, no discernible cucumbers or dill. Fries were outstanding. We shared a huge baklava which was delicious. Happy to give it another try because of the staff, location , vibe and baklava!

Built in 1776, it has been a family home, the first classical school west of the Susquehanna River, a stop on the Underground Railroad, and even a Civil War field hospital. Today, you can grab an incredible meal while surrounded by centuries of history. If you go, eat in the basement tavern. The atmosphere alone is worth the trip. I kicked things off with the Baked King's Onion Soup, loaded with perfectly toasted cheese and a surprise twist--shredded beef that took it to another level. I followed that with the Spit Roasted Chicken Dinner, roasted the old-fashioned way over an open fire until the skin was perfectly crisp while the meat stayed juicy and tender. Because apparently I arrived with the appetite of all 19 Dobbin kids, I also ordered the Dobbin's Hot Beef Sandwich. Tender roast beef on a buttery brioche roll with rich au jus for dipping? I could see the patty was hand formed. We were sat immediately at a table not far from the kitchen. Each of the dozen or so tables comfortably sits four people each. Our server was friendly, cheerful and attentive. There is a bar in the main dining area serving liquor and beer. In the back of the bar is a pool table and an outdoor patio also with a bar and several tables, offering a great way to eat and relax outside. There are two bathrooms, one inside the restaurant and the other is outside by the patio. The one by the patio is a little cleaner and better maintained. Burger prices are a little on the high side, averaging between $17.00. However, you are getting a superior burger. Street parking can be a bit of a challenge due to the restaurant being located in downtown Gettysburg. Parking is free on Saturdays and Sundays until 1 PM. Lee features a slab of Virginia ham. I ordered the General George Meade. Meade was a Pennsylvanian, so naturally this burger comes with a pile of Philly cheesesteak. By the end of the meal, most of my breakfast and both orders of home fries were still on the plates, and my husband had only eaten his sandwich. We paid for the entire meal without complaint, but no one asked if something was wrong or why so much food had been left behind. A simple check in or offering to make things right would have made a big difference. We know every restaurant can have an off day, and we genuinely hope others have a better experience than we did. Unfortunately, after giving Gateway Diner two chances and leaving disappointed both times, we've decided it just isn't the place for us.
