This food stand on Governors Island gets a lot of flack but I've never had a bad experience here. Yes, the food is pricey, but I've enjoyed everything I've ordered across several visits over the years. The alcoholic drinks are strong and delicious frozen on a hot day. I made a visit to G.I. with my girls, and some friends this weekend. Not only for our yearly trip that we do, but they had Pumpkin Point on the island that day. That is where they bring pumpkins and set them up like your in a pumpkin patch and you get to pick your very own, or two. Of course the kids got hungry, and we found that they no longer had a row of food trucks, more like food huts now. A lil disappointed, but happy to have found Lil Eva's. Now I knew that I was gonna pay a pretty penny because we didnt have time to pack a lunch like we normally do, and to my surprise I found that the prices were not outrageous. Chicken nachos- 5stars+ The chicken was so juicy, tasted like slow cooked BBQ chicken, with cheese and guac. mmm, mmm, mmm, only thing missing was the spice. I didnt miss it though, I mean they were that good. BBQ sandwich- 4stars Chicken taste the same as the nachos, just in a sandwich, missing all the cheese, and good stuff. Kimchi Dumplings-5stars They were hot, spicy, just delicious! Peach sangria- 3stars It was refreshing They have a seating area where you can sit down anywhere you like, and after you pay they give you a number and bring you your food to your table. If not, you go to the side of the shack and pick up your food from a lil side window. I hated the seating area due to a sworn of bees all over the place. How can you eat or drink when you are being attack by bees. I think they should find a way to have a net all around like a fence to keep them out. The food is overpriced and not very good, the line is always long and the top 40 they blast in the seating area is pretty terrible. The mac n cheese is actually OK, it's a classic mac with no goodies and standard cheddar, but it's melted nicely. It does need salt and pepper which they do provide in packets at the side of the shack. The shrimp bun is hilarious. It's literally a hot dog bun smeared with mashed avocado with three shrimp added in. It's pathetic. I never thought shrimp and avocado could be so disappointing but, there ya go. Service is weird. On a weekday the woman bringing out the food to the tables seemed weirdly intense and also mentally checked out. She looked at my table (alone, at a four seater) like it was puzzle, not sure where to place my tiny items, so I made a ridiculous amount of room for her so she couldn't possibly make a mistake and like, throw them across the island. A deeply disappointing experience. I've been coming to Governor's Island regularly for the last few summers and I finally bit the bullet and bought food (I usually bring my own). Little Eva's, having been around the longest, seemed like the safest option. Prices for the food quality were INSANE. I paid $27 for a salad pita (pita with hummus & veg), french fries, and water. The fries were good, water was cold, but the salad pita was a disaster. I don't know what the "hummus" was, but it definitely wasn't any kind of normal chickpea hummus. It had a thick stodgy texture, a fishy smell, and looked weirdly white. (Note: it wasn't fish, but did have a fish smell, oddly). And some of the greens were black and slimy. Needless to say, I did not eat the pita and salad. So $27 for fries and salad. Ouch. Considering the small crowd and how simple my order was, it took quite a long time for the food to come out. I'm assuming I had the same server as someone else who mentioned she seemed oddly intense and/or high. Also asked me if I want a fork as if that would be a weird thing to want with a pile of salad. Why not just bring it with the food? The good news is that now I know not to bother with this place again. Seems like a tourist trap. There are limited options here, so people end up here, and they can get away with these ridiculous prices for less than mediocre food and unimpressive service. oh, oh, oh.... This is a strange place. I thought the food (cod sandwich and fish tacos) were pretty good. The fish was tasty and portion/price reasonable. The presentation is really low-effort though. It's not a cod sandwich -- it's two pieces of cod sort of dropped into a hot dog bun. I hate to say this, but the drink I had here today was just god awful. They were out of margarita mix which was a major bummer, but stranded on this island our group was determined to "catch a buzz" The guy taking our order said we only have "Strawverry mix or something so we can make like a daiquiri on the rocks" Ok sounds fine to me! Today we spent the afternoon on governors island. As we got to the area with the lunch tables etc we noticed a place called Little Eva's. Little Eva's was a really cool looking little spot with tables and umbrellas, so we decided to grab a quick bite there. We ordered Eva Dogs, with slaw. The ladies working at Little Eva's were super nice and really helpful. We noticed there were a few other things on the menu but there were 3 of us and we weren't looking for a MEAL. The hot dogs took about 20 minutes and were just plain old hot dogs with some shredded cabbage and carrots on top(slaw). We were certainly disappointed in the hot dogs, but I imagine we made an error in ordering something so easily found elsewhere. Overall; I wouldn't order the Eva's Dog again....but I'd give Little Eva's a shot again just based on the great customer service. read more

Be forewarned-the mango used for the blended drink and bun is canned, and therefore the texture and taste were...questionable but was refreshing in the daiquiri nonetheless. There was NO alcohol whatsoever in my daiquiri which, for $13, is both a ripoff and a waste of money. The mahi taco was ok if a bit wet, and the shrimp bun was on a hotdog bun and not the Bao bun I was expecting; however, the fault is mine for assuming. The shrimp is pre cooked cocktail shrimp, and the guacamole lacking in both salt and lime. The salad was crunchy, with fresh greens, peppers, cucumber, a sprinkling of quinoa and a nice dressing. After walking around Governors Island's limited selection of food vendors, I decided to try Little Eva's. It is an outdoor vendor like all the others on the island. The staff was friendly and I was able to customize a little, like when I asked to get guac on my burger, they told me they could give me a side of guac. The burger was a filling meal, but mediocre in my opinion. It was quite expensive to get my burger with a side of guac ($20) for it being an average one. Also, the person who took the order didn't ask what I wanted the cook on the patty to be so when I got it, mine was medium to medium rare while my friends was well done. Arrived at Governor's Island around noon on a Sunday with a hungry party of 7. We walked through the food court but decided the ratio of decent menu items to length of line was best at Little Eva's, since we could walk right up and order. I split the bratwurst and pulled pork sandwich with my fiance. The brat was greasy and had all the wrong flavor combinations. The cabbage with disgusting looking bacon on top was no match for what should be on it, sauerkraut. I dumped that part off. The pulled pork sandwich was more like hunks of pork, which made it very difficult to eat. There was no or little sauce, and it was pretty flavorless. I ended up just taking a couple of bites of each and giving up on the whole ordeal. A lot of people seemed to be sitting there not eating or drinking, and just taking up precious table space. We mangled together 7 chairs from borrowing from folks, and someone brought us a *tiny* end table so we could rest our food on that. The ground is also super uneven, which means my chair almost turned over a couple times. Next time I think I'll just wait in the long line for the BBQ. read more

The shrimp roll turned out to be one of the odder things I've eaten: a hot dog bun filled with guacamole, big chunks of ice-cold mango, and just three cold shrimp sitting on top. Also right when I and my child sat down at a regular-sized round table with two chairs, the proprietor ran over and asked us to move. She said she wanted to seat a family there. I said we were a family also. There were larger empty tables all around us. I looked over at the family of five she was trying to reseat at our table, and they looked confused... they were already comfortably seated at a larger picnic table. Little Eva's is a shack set up by the Hammocks section of Governors Island. My friend and I ordered a Seafood Trio; which consisted of two raw Connecticut oysters, two raw little necks and to steamed shrimp. The oysters and clams were briny and soft and crunchy, respectively. Really delicious. The shrimp were steamed andchilled just right. You have shrimp that taste like meaty shrimp. They also gave me a sample of some smoked pork that was sitting in its own grease in a carbon wok. While it wasn't seasoned with sauce or salt, the pork had a very nice meaty taste. I have to say, I'm very pleased to see a food stand like this in a tourist spot. Not too many eateries who serve raw oysters know what the ef they're doing. Usually, you get the bland ones. Oysters that have had all their liquor leeched from them because they were covered in tons of ice for a long time. Or, had the brine washed out of them after they were shucked (or pre-shucked). Nice que as well. Throw in some nice picnic benches with a panoramic view of lower Manhattan, the Statue and Joisey (all with accompanying waterways and breezes) and you're doing pretty well for yourself. read more

I understand that food vendors in tourist areas/ theme parks / museums charge more (because, well they CAN because they have a captive audience of hungry tired dehydrated people) but I really resent being charged 4$ for the second worst hot dog I have ever had in my entire life. The only WORSE dog I've had was at IKEA. It's a hot dog, how hard is it to get it cooked all the way through? And if tore charging 4$ at least use a better dog or better bun or provide more than just ketchup and mustard as toppings. Even street meet guys do that. read more
