This has become one of my favorite hotpot places, and it's nearly all because of the broth. I am biased because my most nostalgic Chinese meal is tomato egg noodle soup, so I favor tomato-based soups over many other favors. Their tomato-based broth was amazing, and made the rest of the meal so much better. There was also a greater variety of foods to add the hotpot which made things interesting. The servers were more familiar with Chinese so it would help to be relatively fluent, but I think they are okay with English (I struggled with trying to order in Chinese). It is on the pricier side (the regular price is equivalent to Happy Lamb's premium price) but I think it is worth it because of the multiple broth options and greater variety. What we ordered: - mildly spice soup base - New Zealand lamb, fried Chinese dough with shrimp paste, vegetable platter, and longkou vermicelli Soup base was very spicy as a warning!! There was a large selection of dipping sauces as well as fruit/sides at the sauce/dessert bar. My favorite were the sesame balls! This was a solid experience. The staff was nice and the food was definitely comforting, and they even have little chips at the front counter for you to snack on while you wait for the inevitably long line. We Asians love our hot pot. My review will be based on the below criteria, with heavy comparisons drawn to Qiao Lin Hotpot and HaiDiLiao (sorry Happy Lamb, you're no longer relevant to me anymore): Presentation (5/5): we spent a solid 5 minutes letting our phone cameras eat and being in the way as the servers tried to find a place to put our food. All of your Instagram worthy pics can be found here: from the chunk of fat molded into the shape of a pig to the iPad presentation of beef, I enjoyed spamming my friends on Insta with my onslaught of stories. Broth (3/5): we got the signature spicy soup base and the pork & chicken one. The spicy base was just too spicy - I was taking breaks to cool off my body outside from how spicy it was (Alexa, play Hot n Cold by Katy Perry). The pork & chicken was kind of bland - I just wasn't feeling a lot of depth in flavor. The pork bone broth at Qiao Lin and HaiDiLiao was much better, and both places are cheaper actually than the $16/17 price offered by LuiYiShou (Qiao Lin is $9.95, can't remember for HaiDiLiao) Food (4.5/5): the beef was beautifully marbled and the lamb was very tender and not dry. Ours came in a giant circle of meat, creating a beautiful circumference of protein around our hot pot. The meat prices were well priced and competitive against other major players in the city. One thing I didn't like was the brown sugar mantou-like dessert thing - it was quite bland and just lacked flavor. Sauce Station (3.5/5): the sauce station was a bit lacking. The satcha sauce was really dry when I went, and there wasn't as much variety. I couldn't find soy sauce or Shoyu sauce. One thing that they did have going for them were the little side dishes offered. I had edamame, pig ear, pickled veggies, and fruits. Decor (3.5/5): the inside was decorated in a pretty normal modern fashion. There was nothing too special: Qiao Lin's had very beautiful decoration, and at least HaiDiLiao had the dancing noodle guy. Nothing stood out here for me at LiuYiShou. One good thing is that the soup was quick to boil - they have good hotpot stoves (better than Qiao lin) Price (4.5/5): our bill was $118 before tax and tip for 4 people and we had some leftovers. It's fairly priced between Happy lamb and HaiDiLiao and the closest competitor with Qiao Lin. But with Qiao Lin VIP card, I would end up choosing Qiao Lin over this. Overall a good experience. I'm glad I tried it. I think it's worth a playing going to and I would go again if my friend group wanted to! read more

This is the place to try if you like Szechuan cuisine. The spicy is spicy. Don't mess around if you can't handle it - I learned the hard way. My fix for this was asking them to add some non-spicy broth in which they were very willing to do. Their meats are so delicious and it's fun to create your own sauce and the bar. There are also traditional desserts, fruits, and yummy appetizers at the bar. Overall, I would definitely go back here when I am back in Chicago! If you prefer Mongolian style hot pot and you like lamb, Happy Lamb just up the street is a good option for you. They have a ton of lamb cuts and options. read more

This place is very good! The portions of food are a lot and I think the price is worth it. It is not an AYCE restaurant, but the quality of meat is just really good. The hot pots were individual, which I liked a lot. The only thing is the wait, where we waited more than 45 minutes and did not get the free meat (beef) plate that they advertised. This is the so far best Chongqing hotpot I've ever tried. There are a lot of choices for the soup base. We chose 2 different mini pots, spicy and wild mushrooms, both are very good, not too salty. Meats and vegetables are fresh. Waitress is attentive, continue refills the different soup base when she notices the soup level is getting low. The sauces are covered, which is a plus. The one star review is for the bait and switch misnomer of "All you can eat hotpot for $26.88" because they charge you extra for soup ($10 - 28) and charge you extra for dipping sauce ($2.88). There's no way to eat hotpot without the soup so how can they say it's $26.88 a person if that doesn't include soup? It would have been better if they just charge a few dollars more a person that make you pay for soup and dipping sauce. The other gripe was with the rude blonde hostess. She told us the kitchen would be closing soon when we arrived but we could stay and eat until they closed and that was great. However, when we ordered some extra food before we were finished with what was on the table so we could get our order in before the kitchen closed she gave us a dirty look and told us that we would be charged with wasting food if we didn't finish what we ordered. I went with a group of six and got a bunch of stuff with our bill totaling to $205 which honestly is not bad at all. We were all full and satisfied. The service is great. They're pretty quick and attentive. There were times when we did have to try to get the servers attention but that was far and in between. They also got a couple of our orders mixed up which ended up not being a big deal. They politely apologized and rectified the situation. I highly recommend getting the tomato broth and the mushroom broth. It is so good. Anything goes with it--from seafood to vegetables to noodles. Check this place out. read more

Food: Food was pretty good. They had a good selection of soup base, dipping sauce, and food for dipping. There is one soup base with white pepper and chicken and it is so delicious. I just drank it as soup before dipping anything in it because I loved it so much. Service: I waited for an hour to be seated, so just prepared for that. They do have water and candy to keep you entertained while you wait though. The restaurant will also send you a text when your table is ready, so you can also reserve a spot, leave to grab some bubble tea to go along with your hot pot, and then come back when your table is ready. Liuyishou doesn't look like much from the outside, but within is a large dining area with tables that can accommodate as few as 1-2 and as many as 12... maybe more at the mega-table in the back. I didn't note any music, but a gentle hum of folks enjoying meals with family and friends. Broths came out quickly, with meat, veggies, and noodles soon to follow. We did a 2-broth pot - mushroom and spicy. It was best to mix these together for those who weren't vegetarian, as the spicy broth was MEGA spicy. Both broths were delicious, though. I appreciated the presence of quail eggs and dandelion greens on the menu. We also got the massive beef and pork circle tray, which we could spin like a lazy susan when someone wanted to try the other meat. I did notice that some older menus on the internet from this restaurant feature more veggies, but that could be a seasonal thing--I visited in winter. The sauce bar was very well-equipped, clearly labeled, and even had some veggie appetizers and desserts to the side for those whose appetites extend beyond hot pot (not me--I was stuffed!). No need for waiting time and the food was great! The place was also very big and clean and the sauce station is nice too.

Place is relatively small for hotpot, so the wait can be quite long if you don't get there early. They should probably look into improving the ventilators or exhaust fans as the entire place steams up. Patrons and all those who enter are bound to smell like the place, but they do kindly offer a plastic bag for your jacket. Now, the menu selection is pretty good, but not as wide variety as a few of their nearby competitors. But what they do have is a cute signature soup base shaped into a cute cow, and also a unique chicken and fresh coconut soup that's not available at any of the other hotpot places around. Their meat is also fresh with just the right amount of fat to meat ratio. Their veggies are also fresh and vibrant. But hotpot is nothing without a good soup base. Now I like spicy, but their signature soup base was too spicy for me. Our server was kind enough to skim all the chili peppers out to cut down the heat, but even then it was still very spicy. So you've been warned. Overall, the food was good, but it's pretty expensive. And for that price, I like a few other places nearby like Qiao Lin and Happy Lamb better.
