Haven't had their beef, but their Chicken Pot Pie is absolutely magical. The price for the large is abut $20...and we'll worth it. It will easily fee four people. I understand that their prices are high, but consider the neighborhood and obviously, the overhead. Every time my fiancé's parents come to visit we place an order at Lobel's. We're total foodies and love cooking as much as we love trying new restaurants. The meat you get here is unreal. The quality is better than that of most restaurants and you can prepare it the way you like. The people that work here are extremely nice and accommodating. They ship nationwide and deliver locally. I'm very disappointed by the meat I received from Lobel's. We ordered a porterhouse steak and rack of lamb, neither of which had any flavor and was tough and chewy. The meat quality is very good but over priced compared to other equally good sources of USDA prime meat. The prices on many of the products are not marked or are not clearly marked so you end up with hard to verify and often exorbitant prices. The quality of the prepared foods is not consistently good. Lobels is now just a shadow of its former greatness. Except for the prices. They are great at maintaining those and they just go up and up. The meat is still pretty good. Though there are other butchers around with the same quality or better. You can order prepared food from them and it is often good. However, yesterday I received an order of food that was NOT fresh. In fact,there were items that had spoiled so much there was fermentation going on. Lobels should know better than to send days old leftovers to someone who is expecting freshly prepared food. Unacceptable. No "get out of jail free card" at these prices. Quality and service and taste should be 100 percent every time. read more

I've been on kind of a steak binge lately, and have been trying premium meat cuts from butchers and farms near and afar. Lobel's is a solid institution, as far as I can tell. Right smack in the middle of the Central Park East area, is this meat market, sandwiched in an area full of many-million dollar residences, museums, and other high-culture attractions. Their presentation is what you'd expect for the location. There's a small counter area, impeccably neat and clean. The interior is warm and tastefully furnished with wood paneling and vintage tools. I decided to go with the prime aged ribeye.Those pieces of raw flesh were almost hypnotizing in how good they looked. At home, I prepared with the oven-assisted pan sear method. The MOMENT the steak hit the pan I was overwhelmed by this powerful aroma of fatty beef. I don't remember ever having beef that smelled that good before. It was almost like cow-bacon or something. I don't even really like fatty pieces of meat usually, but I ate this up like no tomorrow. Afterwards (yes there was some wine involved, but still), I started experiencing this incredible feeling of utter satisfaction. It wasn't quite the feeling I get after eating a really big meal (I only had a small, ~7oz portion), with its attendant food-coma and such, but rather, this euphoric haze of everything's-okay-in-the-world. We need to get this meat on the DEA's Schedule I cause it's too dangerous for laypersons to just waltz in and walk off with a piece of this decadence anytime they wish. The meat here is totally legit and worthy of all superlatives, but I can't give it my highest recommendation if only because it's not a very good value. You can get meat that's almost as good at a fraction of the price from quality online retailers or the many gourmet meat sellers that have been popping up all over Brooklyn. But if you're doing some gift-giving, or just want to impress with the no-holds-barred best, Lobel's is it. read more

Apparently when you have a baby and you live on the Upper East Side of Manhattan people send you things from Lobel's. At least that's what happened to us and I'm not complaining. I'd walked past Lobel's many a time but I'd never been in. When I had my third baby a number of people (3, actually) sent us dinner from Lobel's including the rotisserie chicken, chicken pot pie and sides. I don't eat meat, so I can't speak to the chicken items, but my husband claimed that the pot pie was the best he'd ever had. I will say there was a sweet potato situation that was amazing. Well I just finished a superb meal featuring filet mignon from Lobels. We had heard rave reviews from several of our NYC based friends about how spectacular the meat from this butcher was, and although I didn't doubt our friend's enthusiasm for a minute, I did feel there was a a fair degree of hype in their exuberance! Well after grilling these generous cuts of beef on a less than optimal Weber charcoal grill in the dampness of our host's beachside cottage in Amaganset, we all are feeling this was the best beef we have ever tasted. My wife characterized the filet as being simultaneously dense and light. We all consumed at least 8oz. or more of this insanely tender, lean beef...double the quantity we are used to eating! All in all, the finest we have had......I can't wait to order the bone-in ribeye! read more

The best and the most expensive meat I've ever had. Many experiences with them, both in the shop and online. Be aware that: The shop and online stores have different inventory. For example, loin lamb chops are available online but not in the store. Same for Natural Beef. Shop also has items and will do custom work that online store won't have/do. While you can be very picky about EXACTLY what you get at the shop, it's much harder online. You don't see what you are getting; it's hard to specify "the small end of the ribcage, please" online and expect to get it. Some of the online steaks are much prettier than others and at $40 a pound, you tend to be picky. If you don't like what you get, they try to be accommodating, but it can be a pain and you may not want to be a complainer. On the other hand, once you taste the stuff, it's hard to eat anyone else's, except maybe Peter Luger's. read more

I first tried Lobel's several years ago after reading a glowing review of their Wagyu steak in the Wall Street Journal. I have been a loyal customer since. Lobel's is a family run butcher shop in New York City, but you can have any of the steaks offered at their shop delivered overnight to your front door. If you've had Lobel's, you need no review. This review is simply intended as a recommendation for those who are looking for the best steak in the U.S. I have had the others, and Lobel's is the best. Lobel's doesn't have to toot its own horn with national advertising, it has a cult like following for those in the know. I recommend all the steaks, however, you might be surprised by some of the lesser known steaks such as the hanger steak or the flat iron steak. The Cowboy Ribeye at 36 oz. looks like something out of the Flintstones, but it's phenomenal. Any Wagyu steak from Lobel's is the real deal, not some hybrid from these other guys deceptively labeled as Kobe beef. I've had the monster 48 oz. porterhouse, which is just ridiculously good. The recipes offered at lobels.com are superb and customer service is excellent, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, delivery Monday through Saturday. I have had one mistake with my many orders. I placed a call and one of the Lobel's actually answered my phone call at the butcher shop. I received a call shortly thereafter from customer service and the problem was fixed, money comped. towards a future order. I couldn't have asked for more. If you or someone you love is a steak fan, try this place once, you'll be hooked. The downside is that you'll probably never order a restaurant steak again for fear of disappointment. read more

I have ordered a lot of meat from this company, in the past no problems what so ever but as of late all the meat they have sent me has been WAY under the weight is supposed to be. Like half!!! I would highly recommend trying another company such as Allen Brothers or whoever. I just like to get what I pay for. If it says on the package 2 lbs. I don't expect it to weigh 1.1 lbs. THE BEST MEAL I'VE EVER HAD. I trekked across our fair island yesterday to pick up a couple of steaks based on their reputation. To my chagrin, I arrived home with hamburger instead of steak, a major disappointment. I spoke with Evan Lobel today who sent four NY strips to my home. Lobel's has an excellent sense of customer service and had a real desire to rectify the mishap -- I must also mention I am no stranger to steak, and hands down, this was the best steak I've ever had. I ordered the filet mignon gift set for my dad (who is impossible to shop for). The woman I spoke with on the phone was very helpful and shipping was exactly as stated. But, more importantly, my dad called me immediately after eating the steaks and said they were the best he had ever had. I've never heard him rave about food like that except for one meal at a Michelin 3-star restaurant in France whose name escapes me, so it must really have been something special. As I live in California, I don't risk the store pick up nightmare described earlier. But it does seem strange that not having to pack and ship an order would cost more, a lot more, than over the counter. But I have a better experience. When my order was delayed by hurricane Sandy, it arrived at the FedEx terminal about 30 miles from my house after all their deliveries had been completed. This was a Friday afternoon and they called me and said I could pick it up or they could deliver it Monday, but they had no refrigerated place to store it. You would think when they accept a shipment for a perishable product they would get it to the recipient on time even if an employee has to deliver it in his own car. I picked it up, and everything was fine. When I emailed Lobel's my story, they said that once it leaves their shop, they have no control, but they gave me a $40 credit for my trouble. Pretty good, I thought. Now and then, if I haven't ordered for awhile, they will offer me free shipping if I order in the next week. With shipping to CA running over 50 bucks, this is a deal too good to pass up. Everything I have ordered from them has been great except the kabobs. I don't care for their marinades, so I'll make them myself. I really like the cut up lamb chunks as I make a lot of Indian dishes that call for them, and cutting a leg of lamb into bite sized pieces is really a chore. All the pork and beef cuts, sausages and hot dogs are very good. Last night we had two USDA prime T-bone steaks that were about the best steaks we have ever had. Yes, everything is expensive, but in line with what other high class butchers like Niman Ranch or Lacense charge. Shipping is about the same too. read more

First of all, the meat is five star quality. You can not ruin these meats, even if you over Cook them. The price is very expensive, though I'd pay that price anytime because you just can't beat the quality! I've been purchasing from lobels for years and I've truly never been upset with them " except when I'm waiting online at Yankee stadium" it's still always worth it! There service is friendly, they will chat with you but do expect it to be very busy some days. My favorite is prime rib roast for holidays, and the burgers and hotdogs for BBQ.
