At this price point you would expect perfect execution of the concept. Instead we got soggy fries, underwhelming dogs, and warm beer. They serve Nathan's all beef franks, which are good hot dogs, but for the price I would expect a Nathan's "colossal" four ounce dog. What you get is a standard bun length dog, for nine dollars. Hand cut fries are great if you fry them correctly, which is a two step process. Today ours were browned but very soggy, probably the result of frying them only a single time. Whatever fries won "Best on The Island" these weren't them. Beer was warm. The chiller had been turned off overnight resulting in warm kegs. I understand this is an unusual situation and we were given a bottle of beer that was cold, but it indicates a problem with management and employee training. You can see the owner's attitude in her responses to reviews which may be the root of the problem. The building is perfectly clean, completely refurbished with a sensible modern dining room and pleasant patio. The space outshone the food served in it. Ashley, don't get mad, do better. Serve a piping hot colossal dog with perfect golden crispy fries and ice cold beer and you might see repeat business picking up. read more

Took a drive to Galveston today - a beautiful chilly Veteran's day. We don't get to Galveston often anymore & there were many restaurants I would like to have tried for lunch but we settled on Local Dogs because of the good the owners have done for Galveston and because I always told my kids when they were young that Galveston really needed a hot dog place. Well now they have one! The menu has a nice variety of options and something to please just about anyone without having an overwhelming number of choices. I got the Carolina dog and potato salad my daughter got the Philly cheese steak dog and hush puppies. I really loved the bun but thought for $10 the actual hot dog would be a larger size weiner. The pulled pork and cole slaw on mine were a couple of bites' worth of each and both ok. The potato salad was made from unpeeled red potatoes and not something I cared for. Not their fault, just preference. It may have tasted better warm. My daughter's hush puppies were very dark brown but tasted ok. Both of us were glad we tried it but have no desire to go again. They were sooo good! The ingredients were all so fresh! I am super picky and stomach-sensitive about chili, and I really liked their chili, and it didn't bother my stomach! The French fries were freshly cut and made to order, just like Mama used to make! Best French fries that we have had in a long time! We had the chili cheese fries; they are a must-try! We recently stopped by Local Dogs, and I'll start with the positives. The owner was very kind, even taking a picture with our son, which made the experience feel personal. The atmosphere is also fantastic--very thoughtfully designed and welcoming. I also appreciated that they offer veggie dogs and gluten-free options, which is a big plus. That said, the prices were on the high side. Shave ice in Honolulu is about half the price, and while the ice texture was spot-on and the flavors were good, the portions leaned more toward ice than syrup or toppings. At $9, I expected a more generous balance. The most I have ever spent on a shave ice was at Aulani, Disney Resort, it was bigger and shaped like Mickey. With cream, it was $10. Same price as what we spent here. The hot dogs started at $6 for plain and $8 for a bacon-wrapped version, with extras like cheese costing an additional $1. I wouldn't have minded those prices if the hot dogs came more loaded, but they felt pretty basic for what we paid. My son's bacon dog was a bit messy in presentation, and my daughter's sliders unfortunately came out burnt. She was sweet enough to say they still tasted "good," but it was disappointing. Overall, we loved the friendly service, fun atmosphere, and inclusive menu options. We will give this place another try because they have these options and our son loves hot dogs, but it won't be our go to place like we had hoped. read more

Love what the Cordrays are doing to improve Galveston. Looked like a fun place but the "music" sounded like we were all @ a frat party-during the day, not at night- super loud and obnoxious. The small crowd was a mix of seniors, young mothers and locals so I couldn't understand why they wanted to blast our eardrums while we ate. Please consider lowering the noise level and changing the type of music in the future if you want to attract a bigger crowd.
