Just when I thought I had found my go-to spot... I've ordered from here a handful of times over the past few months, and the Fried Chicken Salad has been one of my favorites. Unfortunately, the last two orders have been disappointing. The salad container has changed and now seems to hold less salad overall. There was noticeably less chicken than before, and the lettuce looked old and wasn't as fresh as what I had received on previous visits. For an $18 salad, I expect consistent quality and portion sizes. I love Local Kitchens and I have been to several of the locations around the Bay Area which were all 5 star experiences. But sadly, they closed about half of the locations recently and so suddenly too. I am always in the Redwood City area and finally checked out this Local Kitchens. The location is quite weird because it is on the side of the Bay Club. There is hardly any parking and you'll end up parking very far. The place was clean with lots of windows too. I ordered Proposition Chicken sandwich and strawberry tea fresca from Boba Guys. The fried chicken sandwich came out pretty fast but I noticed it was smaller in size compared to the other locations. A few bites in and I knew, the chicken was much smaller, thin and pretty dry. I still enjoyed the flavor but not how dry it was. My drink was good but the boba was quite hard which is unusual because my boba at the other Local Kitchens locations were always soft. Just a few bumps but I would go back since I am always in the area and maybe they just had an off day. Will come back soon to update! read more

Great spot, easy and quick to pick up your food! I was pleasantly surprised that you can actually dine in as well. There's a spacious seating area with plenty of tables and chairs, and it's conveniently located right next to Bay Club Gym with lots of parking available. I tried the Proposition Chicken burger, fries, and chicken tenders, and everything was juicy, flavorful, and served in great portions. The fries were especially tasty. I was also surprised to see they have Boba Guys. It was too late for me to get one this time, but I'll definitely be back for it. I love that they have a bunch of restaurants all in one place. We live closeby and came one night at like 9PM. This place is great and there's so many good choices on the menu! Inside was very clean and the workers we interacted with were super friendly (even so late at night right before closing)! Portions are big, the plates we got were well made and balanced as far as components, prices are very fair, and it's super easy to order! The sonoran berry horchata was so fresh and yummy (I'd come back for that again)! If we had Bay Club memberships we'd probably eat here all the time! Food was bland and inauthentic. The birria bowl was so disappointing. It made Chipotle look authentic. There was nothing blending the food together. It was so strange to see large pieces of cauliflower in the bowl as well. The black milk tea was also very basic. For the price, you'd expect pretty decent food. Maybe the other food is better but pass on the birria bowl and the milk tea. Parking was also confusing. The lot is for bay club and it was pretty full during lunch time. I work a block away from here and have wanted you try this place for a long time. I did research so I wasn't surprised when. I got here. The place is better than the pictures. It's a very casual café type area. There's 3 ordering machines that would see in most casual restaurants now. On the day that I went there were 5 different types of cuisine to pick from. Great for people who have very picky Lunchmates. I was very happy with the selection and found the food to be excellent. The food is all made from one kitchen and there is one window to that distributed food and where you can. Talk to people. Overall great casual location that is perfect for big groups. read more

Love the recent addition of the carne asada tacos. The meat is so tender and they stack up those tacos like crazy, it is a bit on the pricier side but they are oh so worth it. Decent food options here, but what rubbed me the wrong way is that this is a ghost kitchen and the way they set up their point-of-service terminal is that it defaults to leaving a 15% tip. Keep in mind: I am inputting my own order, picking up my own order, and bussing my own tray. That said, for what reason is a 15% tip the default option? To the owner of Local Kitchens: please think through this and look at it from the standpoint of the customer and ask yourself does it make any sense at all? I have no problems with tipping when there is a service provided, but businesses like this that are not providing a service and not only ask for a tip but set it as a default option are part of the problem as to why tipping in America has gotten out of hand. The new location is inside The Bay Club at Redwood Shores & Twin Dolphin. The good news is they have an entrance on the outside of the building. So you don't have to walk thru the lobby like I did! Also, there's special parking spots reserved for Local Kitchen customers near the main driveway. I was there on July 7th, 2024, and the place had just opened 5 days ago. I placed my order on Local Kitchens App, and then went inside to checkout the new restaurant and talk to staff. I ordered: - Turkey BLTA from "Flavor Trippin' " menu - Birria Beef Burrito from Nopalito Taqueria menu - Spiced Fries, from Prop Chicken menu The order status board showed a 20-min wait for my orders. The interior is spacious and clean. I was there around 5pm, and I decided to stay and eat part of my food there. There's a large empty area in the restaurant, and I was told they plan to make a lounge area for dine-in customers. There's a self-serv station in the center with fresh water, utensils, napkins, ketchup/mustard, and trash bins. So, you don't have to buy drinks with your order, there's free water. Okay, so I sat down and started eating my Spiced Fries. They were crispy and well coated with spices. My dip was Malted Mayo. The Turkey BLTA was a loaded turkey, bacon, avocado, tomato, lettuce and onion sandwich. It was a thick sandwich that needed two hands to hold. The menu options allow you to add & remove items. I ordered the Turkey BLTA as-is. The only issue with this sandwich is the crust. If you eat it right away, the crust can be hard and crunchy. If you let time pass, the crust can get hard and chewy. Otherwise, it's a tasty sandwich with a good amount of turkey. Now, I had to wait a bit for my Birria Beef Burrito. The restaurant Mgr offered to replace my fries with fresh ones since I had to wait for my food. I declined, as I already ate half of them. The Birria Beef Burrito was worth the wait. It weighed over 25-oz, and was about 8" long. It was delicious, with a nice balance of stewed beef, salsa, and rice/beans. No extra salsa, it was good as-is. Overall, a great first time here in Local Kitchens @ Redwood City. BTW, I have bragging rights! I have been to every Local Kitchens location in the SF Bay Area, plus Davis and Roseville. This is a self-service, cash free, micro food hall. You can eat here, takeout, or get delivery. Tip: Save $$$ by using the Local Kitchens App or website, and pickup your own food. The App will tell when your order is ready. The website is great to browse and check out the variety of food they have. My order was done in 20 minutes and I came to pick it up. Hong Kong Milk Tea from Boba Guys: The ice was good, flavor actually tasted like real tea, and boba had good flavor too. Pretty good. Pork Belly Tam Rice: I checked this place out as I saw the chef's videos on TikTok and saw her recipes were available in Redwood Shores, so I wanted to check it out. Surprised me a lot it was delicious. The pork belly was crispy and tender, very flavorful, all the pickled veggies were good, the egg quiche was good too. Overall really great and doesn't taste like gentrified bs imo. Chicken Tenders from Proposition Chicken: I wanted to get a side and wasn't expecting much but the tenders were seasoned really well and it was tasty by itself. With the buffalo ranch sauce it was good too. Very pleasantly surprised everything was delicious. I think the price was reasonable it was 30 something without tax and tip and 42 after tax and tip. Overall, a thumbs up. But there are some big trade-offs. Pluses 1. Tasty Food: The dishes they make are pretty tasty! I'm a pretty discerning eater, and the two things I ate I would definitely eat again. 2. Good App: You can order ahead - a feature I make a lot of use of. The interface is intuitive and the back end seems stable and well engineered. 3. Clean Space: The whole space was very clean. 4. Friendly Staff: In the very brief interaction I had with the staff, they were very warm and friendly. 5. Great Hours: Exceptionally good hours - open until 10:30 daily. 6. Location: I'm a Bay Club member, and the location is hugely convenient for me. I'm pretty over the moon about it. For those who aren't headed to the Bay Club or a nearby office, the location might be neutral to negative. Minuses Ambience: It kind of felt like eating inside that show Severance. There were actually so few items in the space, that I can remember, possibly, all of them: an 8 foot row of plants, 6 cookbooks sitting on one of the tables, a screen with some branding, the three ordering kiosks, and four graphic cards showing the brands of each restaurant. Top 40 pop music added to the Amazoness of it all. Human interaction: Part of their value proposition is limiting human interaction. I encountered someone cleaning the floors who also brought my food out to me when it was ready, and she was actually lovely. But it's obviously a lot less interaction that you get at a sit-down restaurant or even a lot of take-out places. Sometimes, that feels great. Sometimes, it's lonely? Limited Menu: When I was actually at the location today, I think there were maybe a dozen dishes you could order. Looking at their website, it seems like there's twice that many. Not sure what the discrepancy is. But even if there are two dozen dishes, many of them are slight variations on one another. Each brand has 1 to 3 core dishes - like the burrito and the bowl from Nopalito, or the chicken sandwich, chicken salad and chicken tenders from Proposition Chicken. So there are maybe 8-10 basic dishes you can order, plus fries, rice and some canned sodas. The website menu seems to formally list two dozen plus dishes. The trick is that for each basic dish, they make small variations and then list it four different ways. For example, in the chicken sandwiches, 80-90% of the ingredients (including the bun and the chicken) are exactly the same across all four sandwiches. They just change the sauces and slaw slightly on each one and give it a fun name, like The SpicyExtra. Branding: The branding at these new conglomerates that sell food made from recipes licensed from recognizable, buzzy brands always feels a little disingenuous. A recipe is not what makes an eatery. Rather it's the full package - the people, the culture, the customers, the surrounding neighborhood, the ambience, the full menu, the accumulated knowledge of the purveyors. I can't tell you how many customers I've watched walk into a Local Kitchens and stare around confused, with a look on their faces, as they enter a soulless grey room, that says, "I must be in the wrong place". Sustainability: All food is packaged to-go and I didn't see on-site composting or recycling. Some Nuances and How It All Feels Hollow. The central problem with Local Kitchens (this location as well as the other dozen or so) is how hollow it all feels. At every step along the way, I am conscious of the Faustian bargain I'm striking. Fast, tasty, (relatively for the Bay Area) affordable food at the expense of just about everything else. One imagines the finance bros sitting around saying something just like this at their early concept meetings - "we're going to optimize dining for Millennials!" But to actually be in one of these places feels like shopping at Whole Foods aka Amazon. The entire time I'm in there I think - I'm killing local communities, ecosystems and economies all so I can buy ripe tomatoes at 9:30pm. The name "local kitchens" is a laughably silly name for this eatery that could not be more quintessentially un-local. Neither the ingredients, the food traditions, the brands represented, or even the chain as far as I can tell, are what I would consider local (owned and operated exclusively on the SF Peninsula). There is zero mention of sourcing, so I'm guessing it's all Sysco. Local Kitchens is a small chain with a dozen locations, spanning 100 miles. They don't illustrate in any way who owns this place or how they interact with or support their local communities. It looks like a stark division between the owning class who sit at desks and the workers who staff on-site operations. I doubt anyone's worked their way up from cook to owner, nor does that barrier seem permeable. It's likely people who work onsite receive limited wages and have limited opportunities to shape or influence the organization. A more apt name would be San Francisco Brands-R-Us. read more

If you figure that each bite is 2-3 square inches of pizza that translates into $1 - $1.50 a bite! Anyone who would ever order this basic pepperoni pizza is terrible at math! read more

My husband said let's try Local Kitchens in Redwood Shores! Google Maps led us to the back, where there's no entrance so we drove to the front of the Bay Club, saw the entrance, and parked in the general lot. We tried out the kiosk, but couldn't get the Boba Guys section to open. We opened the app on our phones, and the Boba Guys section still wouldn't open. But we went ahead and ordered from the S.O.B. section as we were craving hamburgers and fries. Though the app said it would take up to 25 minutes, the board on the wall said 12-15 minutes. The latter was accurate. I asked Claudia, one of the wonderful workers there, about the Boba Guys section. She tried calling them to have someone trouble-shoot the problem but she wasn't able to get ahold of anyone. Because we had come to LK, counting on and having a craving for both burgers and a Boba Guys' beverage, she went way beyond what was expected (even though it wasn't her fault), and gave me a complimentary strawberry matcha drink!!
