We were downtown and decided to grab a quick lunch. We ran into Alejandro on our way in. He is the marketing manager for several restaurants in the area and offered us good information about Moak's as well as a 15% off coupon. He was very engaging. We ordered the 2 meat plate, 3 drinks, fried pickles and banana pudding. Our total was around $60 and our 15% discount was listed at $2.20. I made sure to take the receipt back to be reviewed, but the girl who rang us up was very confused. Dwaynia came to the rescue and cancelled the transaction and fixed it. The food was good and was what we ordered. I liked the fried pickles but my daughter had been hoping for them to be chips and not spears. The meat was tender and the Mac n cheese was super creamy. The banana pudding was plenty to share. The staff was working hard to make sure everyone got their food timely. I'm not sure what the issue is but people were not responding to their order numbers, so numbers were being called out a lot. It may be that Moak's needs to switch to calling out names, instead of numbers, or putting number stands on the tables. I am a big iced tea drinker and would expect a place like this to brew their own tea. It did not taste as if it was fresh brewed, it was just okay. The most odd thing about our visit was the bathrooms. You have to exit the restaurant into the inner part of the building, take an elevator (there are 2 and one does not have a call button) down 1 floor, navigate which way to turn to go down a hallway to the bathroom. The countertops are in disrepair. The toilet paper holders need large rolls, but they are broken open and regular rolls are wedged in the holders and some had fallen on the floor. We decided to try something different... we stumbled across this BBQ place and thought, let's try it! It was a cute little place. The service was good. The gentleman at the register assumed, correctly, that it was our first time. He gave us the menu and said we can look it over and come back when we were ready. When we made our selection, we wandered back up to the register, gave the guy our order and told him no to the jalapeño question... I do not think he heard us say no. My gut is on fire. I really wanted to like Moaks Family Barbecue, especially because the customer service started off so strong. When I walked in, everyone was super polite and took the time to explain the menu. I mentioned I didn't want a sandwich, and they suggested the combo plate as an alternative, which I appreciated. After I got my food, one of the waitresses came by and walked me through the different sauces they offer, which was a nice touch. I decided to try the meat on its own first before adding anything, and honestly, that's where things went downhill for me. The meat was extremely underwhelming and tasted like it hadn't been seasoned. It lacked flavor to the point where even adding sauce didn't really save it. It just wasn't enjoyable, and I found myself wishing I had gone a different route. On a more positive note, the kettle chips were really good, and even the sliced bread was decent. But unfortunately, the main focus--the meat--just didn't meet expectations. I also felt a bit uncomfortable being asked for a review while I was still eating. First time in Dallas and wanted to try real Texas bbq. This place is the closest to Dealey Plaza, which I had just visited on foot. I was relieved because although the average review score isn't the best, I had a very positive experience. Even though I ordered to go, the man at the cashier (I wish I got his name) gave me a cup to fill and a plastic cup to go. I ordered a two meat combo with brisket and chicken. Moak's is a fast and convenient BBQ chain which stands out because most BBQ places we've been to have long lines and high expectations. We were already in downtown Dallas and wanted something quick and easy and Moak's definitely fits that bill. There's some pretty cheap street parking just down the road, otherwise parking may have to be by lot, especially on busier days. There's both indoor and outdoor options, we sat indoors with our dog which was nice to be able to do. The indoors itself is pretty standard for BBQ places, no frills and there's nothing wrong with that. The only strange thing is that to get to the bathroom you have to go downstairs by elevator. The bathroom itself is rundown and just adds a strange feeling like you're in a completely different building than the one you entered. We ordered their 2 meat and a side combo plus some cornbread. For the meats we ordered their brisket and turkey and for the side we got mac and cheese. We wanted the sweet corn but they were out unfortunately. There was also some confusion as we wanted the cornbread to be our side but it auto charged us separately for it so we paid for it and also ended up getting the mac as a side since we had already paid. The brisket was good, a nice bark and salty flavor to it. Honestly it was better than some other BBQ we've had, the turkey however, was meh. It was a bit tough and bland, but not bad. The mac and cheese was nice, a good creamy texture to it. The real star was the cornbread. It was soft and buttery, a good contrast from the dryer turkey. What Moak's boils down to is good, quick BBQ; something that is kind of an oxymoron when you think about the smoking process. This is an order at the counter type of restaurant, so if that's not your thing (certainly isn't mine) then look elsewhere. The server didn't seem to be in a very good mood, although he appeared to try to be nice to us. We ordered the sandwich combos: pulled chicken (15.00) sandwich and the brisket sandwich (17.00) with a side ea of potato salad. Both were tasty but nothing to write home about. There's a self serve condiment station with jalapeños, pickles, BBQ sauce, onions, etc. Big restaurant with plenty of seating. After going to the zoo, rode the train back towards my hotel... couldn't pass up opportunity to hop off the train & grab some legit bbq. Sure glad we did... yum yum yum! And the counter person was SO patient & so helpful. I'd definitely rate as very accessible friendly, as when I was having verbal communication challenges (due to fatigue, common w/my brain disease) the staff didn't miss a beat, patiently walking me thru options. And then, when they learned I needed the bathroom (which is located in the basement) a staff member went out of her way to assure I got on elevator safely , assured I understood I needed to take elevator bk up to first floor... so though steps out front of this older bldg make it wheelchair challenged, I'd otherwise rate it as exceptional for accessibility. Trying to be fair with this one - I was out and about doing the tours and sites in the Historic West End, and decided to check this place out for some ate as bbq. I came in just about 3:30 on a Sunday, and I saw they had a happy hour $5 margarita special. Bonus, right? It is located on a corner with decent visibility to the public in the area, though the immediate area is a bit rough. A decent rotation of country music can be heard outside and inside. When entering, it is check out the menu and order a the host station. There is of course a tip option, but not entirely sure what it is for as you order at the station and self serve for everything except they bring your food tray to your table. The atmosphere is decent with a long open area of wooden tables of varying sizes and even a cute area for darts and pool. The self serve area included ranch, bbq, jalapeños, pickles, and onions. There is a small bar and that is where the pre-prepared margaritas are served from. There are a couple of seats the bar with outlets if needed. Okay so for the menu there is a decent offering of food. I ordered chopped brisket and fried okra along with my $5 margarita special. The host taking my order charged me $12 for my margarita even after I pointed to the sign right next to the register. I brought this to the attention of the gentleman who is either an owner or manager based on his demeanor. He asked if I already paid and if by credit card. Yes, I did, but I just accepted another margarita and let it be. At least he tried to make it right. The margaritas are definitely just basic margaritas, but certainly not bad for a happy hour special. Just make sure you actually *get* the happy hour special of your bill. The chopped brisket was just meh. Not much taste to it but edible. The okra was actually pretty good. A few notes to the owner - make sure your staff charges the correct prices. The table next to me also had an issue with a check adjustment which tells me this happens a lot. Training, training, and re-training. Signage at the front for people to know what to do would be helpful. I was expecting to be seated and order taken versus figure it out then order here. It's awkward. Food wise - get a good marinade or dry in or something for your brisket, pretty please! Honestly, I regret not just going down to Terry Black's, but I wanted to give this place a chance. You absolutely have great potential, but you've got to change some things up. The manager/owner guy 100% seems invested and like he cares, but the rest of the staff is absolutely disengaged. I needed to trim off a lot of fat. It should have been rendered longer. I didn't eat the bun and had some of the homemade potato chips. Prices were high for a side $7.95 for basic French fries. This is a nice looking place they've slapped a new coat of paint on what was a Sonny Bryan's previously. The location is inside a very cool historical building. You can really appreciate the hardwood floors and the large wooden pillars around. The staff was very welcoming. I went on a Thursday 8/22/2024 I believe their second day of soft opening. After ordering, I asked about the restroom, and i was led by the cashier to the nearby elevator in the hallway of the building where you have to go down a level. The restrooms weren't very clean. Price per portion was pretty good for downtown. The brisket itself wasn't anything to write home about. The sauce, while nice and warm and sweet, just gave me bottled vibes. My texas torpedo order only came with 3 jalapeños vs. 4, the online menu said. The flavor of the texas torpedo was great. My only issue is some inconsistency in the heat levels. Overall, it's a nice addition to the west end that was missing something after Sonny Bryan's left. This was the first week of their soft opening, so only time will tell if they will fill the void left by SB's. In a state and city that prides itself on BBQ, you can't just be mediocre P.s. bbq is relative from Texas to Memphis to Carolina and Kansas City. Leaving this place now and might not make it home before puking. This BBQ is so incredibly VILE! Where do I start? I have never seen such disgusting ribs in my life. We got a pound of beef ribs that came in one massive, hard block that was impossible to cut or bite into. The inside was dry and charred, and the outside was just globs of sauce and peppercorn. We ended up trying to take one bite without breaking a tooth, and then gave up on the entire pound. It all went in the garbage. Okra was terrible...really don't know how you manage to screw up fried okra. Cornbread was inedible. Threw that away, too. The brisket...probably the only semi decent thing on the plate. Still was just a large piece of fat with too much peppercorn, but at least it was edible. The bbq chicken. Another failure. Threw a half pound in the trash. Really don't understand the good reviews. This was by far the worst bbq we've ever had in Texas. I hate leaving a business such a bad review, but $100 spent to throw 95% of the food away deserves it. read more

If I could give it negative stars, I would. Honestly, Dickey's would have been better. The sausage was the lowest quality, not even smoked, probably microwaved. It was also dosed in some kinda sweet sauce, because without it, you wouldn't be able to eat it. Same with brisket: dry, in some kind of sauce. Inedible. Turkey also didn't seem smoked at all. We asked the lady to bring a desert later as it had an ice cream. Obviously she didn't do that. And the ice cream was already partially melted by the time she brought it out. Amazing food in town for work and my wife and I extended our flight until the next day so we could go back for dinner

Good ambience but caused stomach pain. The place looked nice overall. We sat ourselves, which I didn't mind, and we could order quickly at the counter. The drink station was clean and the soda was good. The condiment station also seemed clean and we could get things easily and swiftly. My issue was the food. Both me and my mom ordered a brisket sandwich and chips which came out not long after we ordered and it looked pretty good. However, the barbecue sauce was sickly sweet and the burger itself was very average. When we got home, my mom and I experienced nausea and stomach aches, taking anti-acid medication later in the day. We hadn't eaten anything after so it was definitely the food we ate here that caused the issue. The setting was quaint and the workers - although not having interacted much - seemed nice.
