Lockhart Smokehouse is located at Old Town Plano where the street is paved with red bricks and the buildings are turn of the 19th Century. I could smell the smoke as far back as 2 blocks in the parking garage, and it was making me more hungry than I was before. Luckily, there was no line for a Saturday afternoon so I stepped up to the counter and ordered. I was excited to try this place as I've read good things about from Texas Monthly. but when I sat down and started eating I felt like maybe I caught them on an off day. I asked for moist brisket and it wasn't moist but tough and dry. As much as I don't do this, I had to use their sauce to moisten it up. Sausage too was dry and felt really chunky when chewing. Ribs had a great rub but lacked a good smoke ring and were dry itself. The burnt ends were pretty good; juicy, flavorful and precisely cut keeping it at a size that isn't a big 'ol chunk of beef. I will admit that their potato salad was unique. It was a mix of mayo and I think a drizzle of their homemade bbq sauce and had a few pieces of brisket. That was really good. If I'm ever back in Plano, I'll be happy to give it another go and hope it's a better than today. read more

Decided to try a new place for bbq as I have already been to pecan lodge, terry backs, Hutchins and hard eight. Overall the bbq was ok, the brisket was moist, but it lacked flavor. The pork ribs were very dry and and some parts were very tough. If I were to come back, I would maybe reorder the brisket and try the beef ribs. The potato salad comes with brisket, but the brisket flavor in it isn't super strong and it's very Mayo heavy. I still prefer terry blacks or pecan lodge over Lockhart, but if you don't feel like driving all the way to downtown, this place will do the job. read more

First time at Lockhart. We were in the area, so were excited about trying it as we love BBQ. Definite Texas BBQ ambiance and all the meats are served on butcher paper. Three different people greeted us with big smiles. The men who cut and served the BBQ were great. They explained everything and were eager to make sure we were getting what we wanted. They even gave my wife a sample of their beans to make sure they were not too spicy for her. I would not normally tip counter self-service, but did here, as they earned one. Most all the sides are spicy. The beans have jalapenos in them, one version of the slaw has habaneros, the other jalapenos. For me that is fine, but for anyone who doesn't care for spicy sides, you are probably out of luck. The potato salad doesn't have peppers that I could tell, but I think it had chunks of bacon and that flavor really didn't work for me. The Lockhart slaw was slightly spicy and I thought ok flavor. However, if we returned, not sure we would get any sides. We tried the moist sliced brisket (a nicer way than having to order the fatty brisket vs. lean). I thought the brisket was pretty good, but not fantastic. Also tried the ribs (only 2 to a 1/2 lb order), which had a good flavor, but were too dry. A simple thing, well executed, is a beautiful thing indeed. This place sells piles of smoked meat and sides. That's what they do. That's it! I ordered 1/2 lbs of ribs, 1/2 lbs of brisket, 1/2 lbs of burnt ends, and sides of beans and slaw. That's what we got. No bread, no salad, no plates. Lol. It was more food than I and my buddy could finish. The food was served wrapped in paper. And if you want to eat it there, head upstairs, wipe off a table, open your paper onto the table and dig in. (Plastic spoons, forks, and knives are available if that's your thing.) And an entire roll of paper towels. The meat is good. It's long smoked, fatty of you want it lean if you want it. I like my meat lean. So my favorite was the burnt ends. The brisket was a little fatty for my taste. I was a little disappointed at how much of the ribs was bone and fat, but that's the nature of the cut. Its a rare treat. (Our bill was over $45 for two people.) But a meaty treat indeed. read more

I have to wonder if coming in towards the end of the day impacted my experience, or I should say, Lockhart's product. Although, that had nothing to do with how ridiculously pricey this place is. You can smell mad delicious smoke from way down the street and that's generally a solid preview of the happiness to follow. With this smoke comes mirrors, so I regretfully cannot say Lockhart knows anything about good bbq. Their brisket is dry, dry, dry. I honestly got scared of eating another bite, like John Candy in The Great Outdoors. Their claim that they smoke their ribs "to perfection" is head-scratching when any smokehouse's merit can be proven by how effortlessly you can flick rib meat from the bone, and yet Lockhart's stuck on as if it had been glued. The ground sausage was not packed tight within the casing, and was as loose as ground beef stirred around in chili. It was too strange to me, texturally, to get past. Brisket deviled eggs? Practically no flavor. Jalapeño mac and cheese? About the only the thing on my plate I did enjoy, and by then it was too late. All this, by the way, is nearly $60...one person. Did I say plate? Oh, excuse me. Lockhart's does not have plates. Your grub is wrapped in cheap paper and it's handed to you without a tray like it's an inside gag to see customers get grease and fat stained on their shirts while carrying their order like a pyramid of softballs to the table. You can see from anyone's pic it's just a thin sheet between your food and the table. And you get to pay top dollar for that. Again, maybe it was coming at the end of the day. All meat had been smoked to ash, I suppose. But given the many other dependable joints in the area, I can't say Lockhart's is worth a second try at the risk I'll be disappointed again. And for the insane amount of money my one plate cost, it's far from worth it. read more

I'm playing catch-up on my reviews over the past month, so got this one finally finished. We often take drives around the Metroplex as our outing for the weekend to revisit areas we've not been recently. It's interesting to see all the changes that have been made, and, of course, fun to people watch. Amazing at this time in our world how many people are not masked! Okay, enough of that repetitive redundant observation! This trip found us in old downtown east Plano. My. that area is thriving with new shops, restaurants and throngs of walkers out in the beautiful weather today. Ah ha, we drive past Lockhart's BBQ, didn't realize there was a location in this part of the world. We ate at the one in south Dallas many years ago, and had a very disappointing experience. Adventuresome friend says let's give Lockhart another try; so he places to-go order and we wait for pick-up, which was relatively quick. Chopped brisket, xtra BBQ sauce, beans, mac and cheese and peach cobbler; yum, smells delicious, can't wait to get home! Lockhart gives white bread to make a sandwich; okay, that's nice, but I prefer my brisket on a bun; had some at home, so piled that bun high with the chopped meat. The meat was moist, tender and smoky; added a dab of the BBQ sauce, onions, a dash of mustard and sweet relish. Quite tasty, although I could only eat half of it, deconstructing the other half for lunch tomorrow! I was pleasantly surprised at the deliciousness of the Baked Beans - thick, sweet, onion-y, with bits of brisket. Could have had more of these 4 stars legumes. That creamy, rich Mac and Cheese! Who doesn't love bacon, jalapeño included, and soooo cheesy. Some of the best at a BBQ spot I've enjoyed! My oh my, very happy we decided on a dessert, which was mostly because of my sweet tooth encouragement as friend rather fill up on the protein. BUT, Wait...I was too full to eat the cobbler so saved it for a late afternoon snack. Finally, late afternoon arrived! Warmed the cobbler and topped it with a big scoop of Blue Bell Vanilla. The best adjective I can apply is "just scrumptious"! What a treat; nice flaky crust, tender well seasoned peaches that were just sweet enough. A large serving, so again, more left to complete my lunch tomorrow. This location redeemed their business; we had said we'd never return to Lockhart many years ago (reviewed 01/27/2013), but glad we chose to check out this location. First time having a horrible experience. While waiting in line, they allowed a large group of people to skip me. What kind of business does this??? They were seated on the top floor and we're brought over by some employee. I got largely ignored when I was asking why they could go in front. The one employee that approached me when I arrived to ask if I'd been there before was nowhere to be seen. I could talk to anyone including the staff member that motioned them to go in front of me when I was next in line which is infuriating. The group also ignored me when I said I was next in line. I was not prepared for this, and I don't think I'll ever be the same again. I came in looking for great barbecue, and that's what I found. We were lucky enough that there was not a crowd or line of people, especially on a Friday night. We walked in and quickly saw that there was no hostess and you go directly to the counter toward the back to place your order. The guys behind the counter were very friendly and were quick to get our orders ready. One of the guys behind the counter pulled out big hunks of meat and cut off portions for us. Even before the food was given to us, I could tell that it was amazing. Then, he wrapped the meat in paper. I almost reminded him that we were eating in, not taking it to go, but then I realized that this is how all the meat is served. Strange-no plates, but I went with it. When we got to our table and took out our meat packets, we dove in -with our hands- and enjoyed some fantastic food! Yes, it was messy. Came here on a date night with my husband and loved it! Nestled on a street with lots of options, but definitely worth trying! We got there before the rush, but staff was super friendly and attentive. Someone even came around to check on customers and make sure everyone was satisfied. In fact, because I've spent the last couple of years in Seattle (known for our seafood, not necessarily our BBQ), maybe my amazement at Lockhart is really just because I've missed meats. So take this review with the proper grain of salt. But we LOVED Lockhart. We got 1/2 lb of brisket (moist), one jalapeno sausage, and 1/2 lb of spare ribs. Just a heads up, even when you ask for only a 1/2 lb, they will likely cut you more, which would be amazing except then you also have to pay for the extra amount, so yea--double edged sword. Nevertheless, the food was worth it. Brisket was the star: fall-apart, fatty, and MAN what a flavorful bark. It was really rich so I couldn't eat a ton (though I tried), but yes, I will miss that brisket now that I'm back in Seattle. The sausage was good, but not out of the world. The spare ribs were also really delicious (my partner is more of the ribs person, and he thoroughly enjoyed it). Loved the pickled bar where you can just grab little tins of pickled everything. Yes, I did go back for seconds for the spicy pickles. And the staff was so nice as we just sat at the bar and chatted for a while. read more

MY FAVORITE SMOKEHOUSE If you want non fatty, flavorful, well cooked meat, this is the place. One of my biggest issues with certain barbecue is that the meat has way too much fat. This is not the issue here, you pay for what you're asking for, meat, meat, and more meat. The prices are reasonable and a full pound of meat can take you a long way. My by far favorite dessert is their peach cobbler. The crust on the top of the peach cobbler is crispy and the peach is almost as tender as a jam. The barbecue sauce is a bit tangy and just a little bit spicy, it adds a very nice kick. My only recommendation is moving the sauces and toppings upstairs as well as providing larger disposable cups for the barbecue sauce (which you can purchase by the bottle near the register) 10/10 would recommend. read more

Service was quick and we were always checked on throughout our meal. We ordered fatty brisket, burnt ends and jalapeño sausage. The burnt ends and brisket were very unique as they had a sweet taste to them. This gave the meat a caramelized color. I'm more of a traditional brisket fan myself, but I definitely appreciate the establishment doing something different. Either the reviewers are from out of town and don't know any better or they had minimal expectations for what a good smoked meat should be. Tried a variety of items. Brisket, sausage, mac and cheese, deviled eggs, potato salad shared between a few people. Starting with the brisket, the smoke flavor was there but it was SO dry. A sad level of dry for a brisket. It was mediocre for just being cut which was a let down given they're a smokehouse so well known in the area for their meat! The sausage was good though, which I'd hope so as it's kind of hard to mess that one up. The sides though were good, especially the deviled eggs. But unfortunately, the one thing we got the most of was brisket and well it was such a let down. Maybe it was an off day, but when your specialty is meat there shouldn't be an off day! All the food was phenomenal, the kids loved the Mac and cheese and the brisket was juicy. The turkey was good, but the chicken was a little dry (it might have dried out as it was later in the day).
