As a new Dothan resident, I can say from my experience that it is true. Let me start with the basics. This place is super cute! Driving up to the location, I noticed the outdoor seating area. Picnic tables, palms, and ceiling fans make up the covered patio. Step inside and you are greeted by the daily specials board. It's a 'Seat Yourself' establishment. They have booths, tables with chairs and seating at the counter. It's nicer than the typical diner. I was greeted quickly by a nice young man who provided me with a menu and flatware. He took my drink order and returned promptly with my liquid refreshment and a basket of fried cornbread. I was later offered seconds of the cornbread but I declined. I wanted to save room for the best fried chicken livers in Dothan. A few minutes later the waitress stopped by. Her name is Reagan (like the President, she told me) and she is just the most adorable young lady. When I mentioned that I was new in town and this was my first time dining here, she seemed to get excited. I mentioned the Dothan Facebook page references to The Blue Plate having the best chicken livers in town and she was beaming with pride. She was such a joy to have as a server! Of course I ordered the fried chicken liver plate. It comes with two sides so I asked Reagan what her favorites are. She really likes the Cole slaw and rice with gravy. I wasn't in the mood for slaw so I selected creamed corn along with one of Reagan's favorites, rice with gravy. I was given a choice of white or brown gravy. I chose the brown gravy. And off she went. It might have taken 5 minutes for her to return to my table. With my meal! I kid you not! I have no clue how she was able to deliver hot and crispy battered fried chicken livers with creamed corn and rice with brown gravy in such a short amount of time, but she did! Kudos to the kitchen staff, and not for just the speed in which they had my meal on the table. They really DO serve the best chicken livers in Dothan! Oh my word! Let me walk you through my meal... I started out with the creamed corn. I am a big fan of corn in just about any style. This was good but needed salt. Same goes for the rice with gravy. I added plenty of salt and lots of pepper to the rice & gravy. Let me add here that for those who follow a low sodium diet, some of these sides may work for you. Personally I would rather have my food under seasoned than over seasoned. I had a few bites of each side and got the seasonings dialed in. Now it's time for the main event: the best fried chicken livers in Dothan! They were perfectly cooked and had a good batter-to-chicken liver ratio. I asked Reagan for honey mustard dipping sauce because it's as close as I could get to a Carolina bbq sauce, which I absolutely love to dip my chicken livers in. It totally worked! I took the first bite of the best chicken livers in Dothan before the dipping sauce arrived. My eyes closed, my head leaned back, my taste buds were rejoicing. These ARE the best chicken livers in Dothan! I started doing a little dance as I chewed while sitting in the booth. I was in heaven! I ate them slowly and deliberately, savoring each bite. The angels were singing, a light shined down on my table. That's what I imagined when my eyes closed and my head leaned back with that first bite. I thought I might float out of my seat. Eventually my hunger was satisfied and and I stopped eating. Reagan had her eyes on her tables and immediately headed over to ask if I needed anything else. I requested a to go box and more honey mustard. She was back at my table in a flash with those items and my check. The total: $12.81 for dinner, a beverage, and enough leftover for lunch tomorrow. A great deal for a phenomenal meal! Good Southern home cooking is the best way to describe the food. I wish I'd had room for dessert. I could smell the apple cobbler being delivered to the table behind me. The staff here is great. A waitress taking care of nearby guests greeted me with a smile and a "how are you doing" as she passed by to wait on newly arrived customers. Many times the wait staff for other tables focus just on their tables. Not the case here! If you haven't tried The Blue Plate West, you are seriously missing out! I'll be a regular here! The restaurant is very clean. Tables are cleared promptly. The management is doing a great job with the running of this place. There is plenty of parking. They have a drive-thru window for carry out orders. They have thought of everything!
