We ordered take out tonight and decided to give loon Chuan another chance as I usually order from a nearby place that we absolutely love. Unfortunately, the food was tasteless. The general tso chicken were huge cube of meat and although tender, it lacked any of the traditional flavors from the sauce. Roast pork lo mein was *fine*.. I will say they gave more pieces of shredded pork than other restaurants so that was nice but the flavor lacked there too. Kung pao chicken was ok, nothing great but was ok. The imperial shrimp was the worst of it. Absolutely no flavor whatsoever, what a shame. I was charged the "new" prices, even though I ordered off their menu on their website. The egg roll was disgusting. The shrimp with lobster sauce was watery and lacking anything other than a few shrimp. No flavor at all. How dare they pawn this off as lobster sauce!! Every New Year's Day my family gets together and we go out for Chinese food. We usually go to Oriental Plaza, but decided to try this restaurant due to it receiving the number one rating on Staten Island that the Staten Island advance has given them based on people's votes .We got there at 5 o'clock, which was our reservation time. There were a few tables that were full and the owner seated us at a table in the corner. We waited for the one waiter in the entire place to come over to us. It took quite a while before he took our order and we placed our appetizer and entree order. We didn't receive the appetizers for an hour and a half, We then waited for our entrées which came out about half hour later except for my husband's. (while we placed our order the waiter had told us they had no dumplings so we ordered a large, boneless barbecue ribs. He came back out of the kitchen and said no we have chicken dumplings, so my husband said OK will have two orders of the chicken dumplings and make the spare ribs a small order instead.) He took the rest of our entrée order. I very clearly heard him repeat my husband's order of crispy duck. As we were receiving our entrées, he said to my daughter, your vegetable lo mein will be right out, and my husband said, and my crispy duck? He didn't answer . He went to the kitchen and came back with the lo mein. He left again. When he returned (and at this point there were very few diners left in the restaurant) it was about 7:30 PM, .He returned with my daughter's order and I said to him, "what about my husband's duck?" He quickly said, "no no he didn't order that." I said he did you repeated it. I saw you write it down " "no no no I didn't do that." he kept replying and went back to the kitchen. Finally, he came out and he said to my husband when you changed your order from a large to a small, boneless barbecue ribs I got confused." We said how you could know the exact point in time when you were confused, but you have no recollection of my husband even ordering crispy duck? My husband had to share my food. He was not happy, because he always has crispy duck traditionally on New Year's Day, When the waiter came out again, I said, "You know we've been sitting here for almost three hours. You could've put another order in an hour ago and he would've been able to at least take home his order of crispy duck." He said nothing I said well I'm sorry you're not getting a tip with that he came back out with the check and my husband (being the nice guy he is )of course generously tipped him. At last the waiter looked at me and finally said , "sorry " I will never go to that restaurant again. Yea, well I can see why everyone is so happy with the quality of the food and the spices here. I was bummed when I didn't have duck sauce until I realized I had home made sauce for the egg roll. It was a good thing too, because the egg roll tasted like old oil. Not so good. Bone in ribs were overcooked and terrible- skip that. Scallion pancakes on the other hand were great, and the sauce was also really good. Same sauce for the dumplings, which I loved but wife thought were too doughy. What I didn't like was it was only 4 to an order. Crab rangoon were delicious. Lo mein was good, nice flavor and lots of veggies. The general tasos used really nice pieces of chicken, but I almost missed the small, over fried crunchy ones you usually get at other places. All these pieces were huge and hug to be cut. That being said, there aren't many Chinese food restaurants in Brooklyn that offer such great food unless, of course, you go to 8th Avenue, Chinatown, but that's like hit or miss with cleanliness. But Loon Chuan's food is amazing and I missed that in Brooklyn. It's as if all the restaurants in Brooklyn left and went elsewhere! So far so good! On Friday June 3, 2011, I was in the area on business. It was about 1:00 pm and time for lunch. I was unfamiliar with the area in terms of food. I had passed a variety of fast food places and saw a Checkers. When I parked the car and I saw Loon Chuan across the street and decided to go for Chinese instead. When I walked inside, there was only two other patrons eating at a table. I usually would walk out, why no other customers. If you consider it was lunch time and there were only two other patrons eating at a restaurant, I usually consider that a bad sign. I decided to stay because I was hungry and in the mood for Chinese. An older lady directed me to seat where I liked and the waiter immediately came to my table. I was given a menu. No lunch specials, etc. I reviewed the menu and decided on a combo plate. Sweet and sour chicken, pork fried rice, egg roll, and egg drop soup (all for $12.00, pricey). The waiter (classic Chinese accent) was attentive and brought over my beverage and fried wonton noodles with dipping sauces (duck and hot mustard). He promptly brought my soup which was hot and tasty, albeit a little syrupy (how?). My meal came shortly thereafter. Well, I was surprised. The plate contained an egg roll, fried rice and what appeared to be a fried breaded chicken cutlet (uniformly sliced across) with the red sweet and sour sauce drizzled on top with several chunks of canned pineapple and three ridged pickle slices (I do not like pickles in my food). In all the years of eating Chinese food, I have never had sweet and sour chicken in that way, NEVER. Usually in sweet and sour chicken, chicken meat chunks are breaded and fried. Then it is served with the sweet and sour glaze on the side or quickly sautéed in the glaze. I gave it a try anyway considering I was hungry and pressed for time. I did not like the presentation and the fried breaded chicken cutlet lacked flavor. The sauce also lacked flavor. I don't think the fried rice was freshly made for my order. It was not hot. It seemed that it was in a warming container of some type. The rice was ok, but not flavorful. The only thing that was decent was the egg roll, which was like every other egg roll you get at a Chinese place. I finished my meal and was given a small package of almond cookies, which were ok. The bill came to something like $14.60. I went to the bar where a male Asian guy who was working laptop. I gave him the bill and a $20 bill. The guy must have been an American born Chinese. He looked and the bill and asked if I need change. Really? I am going to leave over a $5 tip for that meal. I replied yes, give me back my change. I went to the table and left $2. I left the restaurant, got in my car and went on my way. Later that evening, I told my wife about my lunch and she thought I was joking. She laughed so hard at my description of the meal. She reminded me that is why she dislikes Chinese food, too inconsistent. If the restaurant reads this, please understand that I have had better Chinese food from storefronts in some of the worst neighborhoods NYC. If I wanted a chicken cutlet, I would have gone to the nearby diner. Damn, I should have just gone to Checkers and save $10. read more

You will not experience true authentic Szechwan or Cantonese here. Gooey gelatinous messy Shrimp with lobster sauce. The fried rice is blah. The hot & sour soup is a travesty and almost all broth as is the egg drop. $9 plus for lunch without soup or standard egg roll is horrendously over priced. They have the balls to charge extra for these standard lunch items along with white rice, Really? Brewed black tea is always weak. English isn't spoken well here so you may have to point to get what you thought you ordered. No decor or music. Dated look & feel. Now the only saving grace is a big screen TV along with a full bar. Unfortunately the high priced theme continues with Mai Tai's $8 a Chinese traditional cocktail is way over priced and embarrassingly poorly mixed as well as super weak. No, I'm not a fan. read more

Walking into this restaurant reminds me of Chinese restaurants in the late 70's and early 80's...it is like a step back in time. The service is excellent -- the same staff has been there for years. They also make a mean pina colada! The food is good...not oh-my-god-I-gotta-go-back-there good, but it is good.
