Lord Empanada serves Argentine style Empanadas which have cousins throughout the world such as the Phillipines and other former Spanish colonies, India (Samosa).  Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica all former British colonies often call them Pasties.  Lord fries their Empanadas which, to me, creates a drier, denser, tougher crust especially where the dough is crimped to give a thick, hard, desicated, unsophisticated mouthfeel.  I tend to like the Filipino style where the dough is slightly sweetened and baked with an egg wash to create a more cakey, softer, mouth pleasing, shinier finish. I deliberately chose meat based Empanadas here since many times I've experienced that vegan based foods can be bland.  Service here is efficient and thoughtful. I bought 6 different empanadas, and inside the paper box flap, each flavour was listed in the order that the empanadas were placed!!!  Bravo for taking the time & effort. Each order is fried fresh so our order took about 20 minutes. The smart regulars know this so some phone in a pre-order.  * denotes more tastiness in my opinion.  The fillings are eclectic mostly from the Latin American cultural realm.  1) Pizza:  Pepperoni salame, Salsa Marinara, touch mozzarella.  Had a diluted pizza flavour and couldn't taste the "Parmigian". Rather dry and only a verisimilitude of what a good pizza should be.   *2) Al Pastor:  Mildly sweet, fruity red chile sauce with a bit of piquancy.  Chicken is meaty moist.  *3) Chicken Fajita: red & green peppers agrodolce/sweet-sour,  meaty moist   4) Spicy Carne Asada: Beef is a bit dry. What is it meant by spicy? Not particularly chile piquant; not hot spices like cinnamon, cloves, allspice.   5) Birria: Soft, moist, fibrous like braised pot roast. Light flavour of possibly herbs like thyme. Bland  6) Beef: Mildly sweet, beefiness. Precision diced micro-cubes of al dente potato possibly sautéed in oil.  Unfortunately, many of the Empanada fillings lack a satisfying Umami.  1-6a)  Sauces: *Chimichurri is a complex mélange of good quality, buttery olive oil with addition of garlic, oregano, thyme, parsley, etc.  Red Chile Salsa reminds me of Salvadorean salsa for Pupusa...watery, mild, no piquancy.  **"Spicy Tan Sauce" flavour & piquancy of Habanero chile peppers, touch citrus fruity, black peppery, bit of Umami, good acidity, nice piquant kick.  ***7) The Bread Pudding here is unique in that it is the perfect blending of bread and egg and milk based Flan. I can't tell where one ends and the other one begins. The gradation is so fine. Ultra soft yet sufficiently firm, velvety yet dense. It's an elegant exercise in plush mouth textures.  Good amount of vanilla to add aroma to keep it interesting. Addition of sweet, semi-leathery raisins here & there to add a counter point. It is such an excellent bread pudding/flan that it is worth the drive to Lord. Drizzling Grand Marnier, Amaretto di Saronno, Frangelico, etc. could make it even more decadent.  Overall the Empandas are 3 stars, but the Bread Pudding and the pert, patient, informative, young lady server and other servers, who helped us, propelled my rating to 4- star.  PS There is only what seems to be a "swamp cooler" which is good in that it is more energy efficient and hydrating. However, please fix it since it wasn't properly pumping cool air out on a 95℉ afternoon. Your workers and customers need to stay comfortable especially  in the hot kitchen. read more

Finally got the chance to try Lord Empanada. It has been on my list of places to try for a while now. So while visiting some friends who now live in Monrovia. We went here for lunch. You order at the counter and then pick up your order at the counter. They have a few tables inside. It is a small place. And of course, I had to try a bunch of them. So we got a dozen to share and I took the leftovers home. We got a bunch of savory flavors and a few sweet flavors so we could have lunch and some dessert too. They have classic flavors like beef, chicken, and spinach and cheese. And they have different flavors like birria, spicy asada, spring roll and al pastor. They were great after re-heating them too. I don't know why I haven't tried this place earlier!! I ordered on DoorDash cuz I was feeling lazy and it was the quickest option that wasn't fast food. The empanadas arrived hot!! Each one was so yummy. They were packed well, and it was easy to tell which empanada was which cuz they wrote it on the box :) the birria came with consume, and I got two other sauces as well. I was short on time and needed a delicious, easy-to-eat snack, that I could pick up on the way to a party. I was about 40 minutes out and asked the gentleman who answered the phone if he could prepare enough empanadas to serve 20 people in that amount of time. I've been meaning to try this place out since I've gotten recommendations from friends, seen that they've been nominated as one of the best eateries in SGV /ETC on Yelp, and it was one of the Yelp Elite Events/Experiences that I was a bit bummed out on not being able to RSVP too. We were getting ready to enjoy a meal later on, but wanted to pre-game and Lord Empanada is in the area, so we took this opportunity to finally try them out! The parking lot is a bit tight and if there are large trucks or cars there, it might get a bit tight, so if necessary you might have to park across the street at a larger shopping plaza. There's a decent amount of seating inside and the décor is cute, and also really reminds me of a "welcome home" feeling. They do have jars of their chimichurri sauce on sale, baked goods and desserts on display, and a fridge of beverages too. We got these empanadas: 1) Spicy Asada: -The filling is bistec (beef steak) with spices. -The asada has spices in it but isn't too spicy. To make it spicy, we dipped this in the side of salsa provided which gave it the kick to boost this empanada's wonderful flavor. 2) Birria Queso: -The filling is marinated beef and Monterey jack cheese with a side of consommé for dipping. -Generous portion of consommé for the size of the empanada for sure. This was my favorite. -The marinated beef was flavorful and moist and the gooey Monterey jack cheese really brought everything together. 3) Pizza: -The classic! We just had to get this. -Simply mozzarella, pepperoni, and red sauce (marinara sauce). Reminiscent of a pizza Hot Pocket. Good, solid order. Each empanada came out super piping hot with all the filling melty and steaming. Each one, wonderfully flaky on the outside with the perfect amount of bounce in the pastry. With our empanadas we had a side of consommé, salsa, and chimichurri to dip in and these only serve to enhance the empanadas since they were so good on their own! The empenadas is a bit heavy on the stomach after a bit since it is deep fried. TRI TIP SANDWICH (4/5) - The sandwich was good, but I really like the soft bread they use. BIRRIA EMPENADA (4.5/5)- nice soft juicy birria beef with some cheese inside. It has great flavor and dunk it in the birria broth. AL PASTOR EMPENADA (1/5)- I didn't like this at all. The pork taste in the empenadas doesn't work at all, in my opinion. SPICY ASADA (4.5/5)- nice beef chunk flavor of spices. There are about 5-6 tables in their dining room that can probably seat 4-5 people comfortably, and half were open for my friends and I. You order and pre-pay at the counter, which also makes this a great spot to eat with a group of friends. Across my group, we tried nearly all of the empanadas except a couple, and they were ALL phenomenal! My top three favorites were the Mushroom, Spinach, and Chicken Fajita. I also ordered the Birria, which was also good, but not as good as the others (to me). They have sauces as well including a consomme for the birria, a spicy salsa, and a chimmichurri...YOU WANT TO ASK FOR AN EXTRA CHIMMICHURRI, TRUST ME. Their chimchurrri is great and they have a red salsa you usually have to ask for that I like with the egg empanadas. You have to make them give you enough sauce if you're taking empanadas to go. We tend to stick to the empanadas. One time we ordered the chile verde which was tasty but too expensive for what it was. We are happy with the price and quantity of the empanas though! I made an online order the night before for a 10am pickup of Monrovia's finest empanadas. Person who went to pick up my order showed up at 10:07 to pickup the order and the order wasn't ready until 10:27. Although staff was very nice and even apologetic, it's a little frustrating that orders aren't ready at specified time requests. This may have been a one off though. The hype is real. The empanadas here have solid flavor and do not shy away on the filling. The four original empanada flavors are Beef, Chicken, Spinach+Cheese, and Spicy Black Bean. There are a large variety of other flavors, some staple (ex. Birria and Pizza) and some seasonal (ex. Al Pastor). My favorite has got to be the Beef empanada. It's just filled to the brim with flavorful ground beef and nothing else to get in the way. My second favorite was suprisingly the Spicy Black Bean. It's got just the right amount of kick you'd want from a small hand pie worth two or three bites. I also tried one of the breakfast sausage. It was also delicious, though a little less special. The filling was a mix of sausage and egg. They also have a couple dessert empanadas like Apple Pie and Cheesecake. I tried one of the Apple Pies and it was also very good, with a sugar crusted exterior and served with a side of dulce de leche sauce. At $3.75 each, I think it's a fair deal for a solid product. $41 if you order a dozen! (You really only need like 3-5 of these for a meal) The place also sells cakes and flan as well. There is a really small parking space where you might end up double parking somebody, so you can try for street parking instead. read more
