My favorite taco spot in town! Been coming here for 5 years, and I am never disappointed! I first came here for Fruiti Hielo, which was a dessert spot connected to the restaurant. They had a number of desserts, but I'm not sure what happened because they got rid of that section and made room for more seating. Los Cuatros Vientos is located in a pretty desolate location, behind Cold Stone Creamery. You'll find it if you turn on Cassaza, it's behind that shopping center. They have a wide selection of combination plates, meats, tortas, and even seafood. I usually go for the combination plates or their delicious tacos. I have tried their buche (pork stomach, carne (beef), carnitas (pork), el pastor (pork) tacos. Each are so delicious and definitely filling. They have a salsa bar with green/red salsa, roasted jalapeños, pickled onions, and more. I love their salsa because it's very creamy and spicy. I had the fortunate opportunity to try them as a taco truck too, because my friend hired them for her going away party. I have to say they were the best tacos I have ever had along with their various salsas. The workers are also so kind and they always make my order fast. Pay attention ! Trust your GPS, it is there ! We have been driving by this place, on the way to someplace or on the way from someplace, we didn't know it is there until we purposely look for it. WOW, this is really a Gem and we are glad that we finally tried them out. Much bigger menu and lots of items for us to try in the months and years to come. You will place your order at the counter, get your ticket and a serving of Chips. Then have fun at the Salsa bar, my new favorite is their Pickled Onion .... yummmm... Took about 10 minutes, then the Chef brought out our orders. Everything was hot and tasty, did I say "Hot", be careful when you open up your tortillas. We savored each & every bite of our food. We have tried their lunch and dinner and are enthusiastically giving as many thumbs up as humanly possible! Their tacos are so juicy and delicious! Their burritos are huge and filled to the brim with deliciousness! You can pick pretty much any meat in any combination which is so cool. The quesadilla was made so uniquely and was really a fun treat! The enchiladas are spectacular. We went with the green sauce on top and can see why it's so popular, not spicy with heat but flavorful to the max. The red hot salsa is fire! Literally! Came here for a quick bite after visiting Reno for the weekend. Ordered our food and waited about 20 minutes. I had a huarache de asada and my husband had a quesadilla de asada. The huarache had no beans on it just meat lettuce and cheese. The meat was nothing but fat and my husband's quesadilla had very little cheese in it. My son had some tacos and said they were ok. this is one of my favorite mexican spots in reno. as someone who went to mexico city a year ago i have been searching for the best spot in reno trying everything. by far this is the closest to any food i had in mexico city. their ceviche shrimp tostada is insane. their salsas are so good. their tortilla chips are perfect. honestly would not recommend the carne asada tacos or tortas but everything else has been so delicious. always full of people and the staff are helpful and always cheery. they do deals on beer which is also a plus. read more

I needed a potluck meat dish and this restaurant delivers in a big way! Tucked behind other shops near Wells and Plumb, once you find it, it will be a 'go to' place. They have all kinds of tacos (carnitas, pastor, etc,...,), burritos, and plenty of chips and various salsas to go with them. I ordered a pound of carnitas. You don't just get that. You get a bunch of tortillas, lime, cilantro, tomatoes and onion, and salsa (you choose and put into ziplock bags). The price for all this was incredibly reasonable. Just go and check it out. Best Mexican food in Reno. My girlfriend got a huge quesadilla stuffed with a ton of asada and cheese and I got the carne en su jugo. This is the only spot in Reno that you can get it and this is the best I have ever had. The broth is a spicy green blend that was absolutely delicious. The menu is all Spanish and the inside if the restaurant is bare bones and kind of divey. Some may be intimidated by this, but if you are brave and go for it you will not be disappointed. The staff is awesome and the food is top notch. I couldn't have been more happy about the experience. This is going to be my new Sunday morning soup spot. read more

We were there for Taco Tuesday and tried several different ones - Carnitas, Asada and Pollo - all great. The Salsa Bar allows you to try different combos and adorn your meal as you wish. I have tried great Mexican food in Reno. As a Mexican, I can tell that this place is the one that best captures the Mexican true flavors. Just sent me back to my childhood in Mexico City. OH MY GOD. The deliciousness of Los Cuatro Vientos has left me stunned. I'm so glad I've discovered this hidden gem. If you're into unique and authentic Mexican food, and don't mind venturing to rather sketchy territory to get it, this place should be at the top of your list, as it is probably some of the best Mexican food in Reno. My two friends and I arrived here at 2:30pm, believing that we would miss the lunch rush, but we were wrong. The place was completely packed and there was a pretty long line. However, everything moved extremely quickly; the service is phenomenal. Their menu is also enormous. We were completely overwhelmed with all the options we had. There were many vegetarian options, including squash blossoms (flor de calabaza), mushrooms (hongos), and not to mention the exceedingly rare and legendary corn fungus (huitlacoche). Yelper Steve T. has a fantastic list of translations of food that was very helpful to us. I was so ecstatic to find that this place serves huitlacoche; it's a very rare type of fungus that grows on corn, and though it doesn't sound appetizing, it's a sought after delicacy. We had to try it, so we opted to share the HUITLACOCHE QUESADILLA. It was huge and extremely tasty, though nothing life-changing. Nonetheless, it's a definite must, as this is probably the only place in Northern Nevada that serves it! My friend ordered the FLOR DE CALABAZA BURRITO (slash blossom burrito), and it was phenomenal, and unlike any burrito I've ever tasted. It was stuffed to the max with tons of fresh squash blossoms, which were reminiscent of artichoke hearts. I ordered the CAMARONES BURRITO (shrimp burrito), and it too was very impressive, and one of the best burritos I've had in Reno. The thing was the size of a small child, and chalked full of the freshest ingredients, including a huge amount of surprisingly fresh shrimp. Each bite was such a satisfying burst of flavor. My other friend ordered the special of the day, which was a shrimp dish. This might've been the star of our meal; the plate was enormous, with a pile of sizzling shrimp, potatoes, and veggies swimming in a pungent red sauce, accompanied with rice and two huge slices of the most tender and flavorful garlic bread. The sauce was a thing of wonder, and the garlic bread dipped into it was just heavenly. Last but not least, we took a caramel-filled CHURRO to-go, and it was swoon-worthy. The scant filling of dulce-de-leche added the perfect decadence to this fresh sweet treat. I will definitely be frequenting Los Cuatro Vientos. There's no other place that offers such a variety of authentic Mexican food, and it is now in my top three Mexican places in the area. read more

Wow! Very impressed! If you're going at night, just be aware that the restaurant's sign doesn't not light up. We got the chicken, nopales, and al pastor gorditas and they were sooooooooo good!! Naturally, I went for a taco trifecta: asado, al pastor, and pollo ("Beef, pork, chicken... MMMM!"). I dug the carne the most as it brought more flavor than the other beef tacos in town. The chicken and pork tacos may have been edged out by their local competition but were still super tasty. Still hungry, I ordered up a lengua taco on a whim. Having grown up in South Phoenix, I am no stranger to the looks of surprise I get when I opt for lengua; trust me though, this "chino" does not discriminate when it comes to beefy goodness. Spoiler: it's cow tongue. But I HIGHLY recommend it. Braised to perfection. Trust my buddy, Otis: "TRY A LITTLE TENDERNESS!" The actual meats were good but not mind-blowing, and the salsa bar is what really helped to make these tacos great. Small spread of selections that range from tame and fresh to delightfully spicy. Red onion, radish, and lime for all of your topping needs. My personal favorite was the creamy avocado tomatillo; mixed with the spicy salsa rojo, it really brought the tacos to life. Topped this all off with a cup of horchata. I think they use a powder mix here with a few in-house tweaks, e.g. noticeable, but welcome, dash of cinnamon. On my way out, I got a chicken torta for the road, but sadly, bolillo bread and I just don't click. Solid sandwich nonetheless. If you time your visit well enough, you can also catch up on your telenovelas on the TV in the larger dining room. I paired my lunch with "La Rosa de Guadalupe." No regrets. Have you heard of Los Cuatro Vientos? It is Spanish for "taco heaven". Actually, that's not true, but they do have great tacos. They have chicken, three types of beef, chorizo, and two types of pork. You can't go wrong. It's a lot of food if you get the combo. It is unfortunately located on a back street making it hard to find, but if you get there you'll be glad that you did. We left the Peppermill in Reno in search for tacos. I love finding small hole-in-the-wall places while out of town, and Los Cuatro Vientos looked promising! We parked our car out front near a line of motorcycles and bikers milling around a lounge next door. A lady biker pulled up on her Harley in super high heels - quite impressive. Some of the biker men had giant knives at their sides. I liked this plaza! Inside the taqueria there were a handful of tables, and I took it to be a good sign that most of them were full. In between the tables there were lots of noisy children running around. We walked to the counter in front of us and placed our orders. Since veggie tacos were not an option, I ordered 1 carnitas, 1 pollo, and 1 carne asada ($1.60 each). We sat next to the salsa bar - perfect! My love of chips and salsa is even greater than my love of tacos. Looking around the place I noticed dirty floors, but the tables were clean. I used the restroom and it was clean (ish). It's not somewhere you'd want to take an important client, but it IS somewhere you might pick up for to-go if youre trying to impress someone. Because oh, man! When the food came, we were quite impressed. It takes a lot for me to give high praise to a taco, but the ingredients were fresh, the meat was moist, and the salsa bar was terrific! The chips were light and tasty also. We were full when we left and I would absolutely return to this place and recommend it to others. The staff clears your plates for you (probably why the tables were clean), unlike places where people bus their own plates, and leave food behind on the tabletop. If you are adventurous foodie who loves to try new things, or a seasoned vet (see what I did there? Pun absolutely intended!) who misses the taste of home, Los 4 Vientos is for you. Not only do they serve hard-to-come-by huitlacoche (black corn fungus) quesadillas but they also have Salvadoran tamales, natural juices, tacos, pupusas, soups, and desserts. Before you say "no way" to huitlacoche, let me ask: Do you like mushrooms or truffles? Because that's sort of like what huitlacoche feels and tastes like. At Los 4 Vientos they mix theirs with onions, peppers, queso and spices. I'm not sure if the dish is totally vegetarian, but it's a great meat alternative. (I recently read an NPR article that said hipsters have caught on, so now huitlacoche is actually being grown and harvested somewhere in Alabama.) I love that you can also grab a vegetable juice or champurrado (they run out so if you are set on champurrado, go early). Their menu is extensive, including the options for dessert. What we loved on a recent trip: caldo de res, posole, juices What we didn't love as much: the tripas taco. There are so many other specialities here, tacos take a backseat. I like my tripas crispy on the outside, but these were chewy and rubbery. Maybe it was an off day. Tip: if you are ordering to go, park on the street in front of the restaurant for a quick getaway. Ate dinner here tonight! I ordered 3 carne asada tacos. They filled me up! The tacos were about a 6, but at $1.69 each, they're a 9. They have a little salsa bar which was fun to try. I also had a mandarin jarrito which was $2.... I wish they would have had more of a variety because I like the strawberry jarritos. Their menu is pretty large, I'd like to come back to try the posole and more tacos. There is a dessert shop conveniently connected to this place. The downside of this place was the cleanliness. The booths are falling apart, the menu has things scratched out with sharpies and sticky notes, the lady behind the counter was eating jello in front of us, and she was also making some sort of sauce for which she had to open a packet of powder mix, and she did so with her teeth. Went in with my father. Was a pretty bad experience to say the least. I'm normally patient as i've been a server in a restaurant before, but the service was just awful. Inexcusable. An hour long wait, and the food that came by wasn't even of good quality to make it worth the wait. Tasted bland and rushed. Surprised I didn't get food poisoning worthy of a hospital trip from it, though I did feel kind of sick the rest of the day. The waiter we had was pretty rude. She had lighter dyed hair. Seemed bothered that we even came in. With that super long wait we only got a slightly dismissive "sorry for the wait". Most restaurants would at least offer you something as a compliment for your wait such as a smaller, faster appetizer on the house or whatever but no. Then watching a guy literally sprint around the restaurant wiping things down and almost looking like he was about to run into customers. Didn't do a very good job either, tables were still kind of dirty and the menus they handed us were still covered in some food. The bathroom was also pretty disgusting. Dirty and awful. Wouldn't recommend it. Looked like it hadn't been cleaned in a year and to really add to it, they had a sticker of Donald Trump in the toilet saying "please pee on me". I get you don't like our president, but that's just very, very, unprofessional and lacking in any class. Anyway, if that's the cleanliness of their bathrooms, you can imagine the hygiene of their kitchens. Their entrance also smelled like urine which was also nasty. I'm usually mistrustful of Mexican places that have too many different genres of food -- the old "jack of all trades, master of none" thing. So seeing Los Cuatro Vientos menu with an extensive mariscos (Mexican seafood) listing, plus specialty items such as Birria and Barbacoa (pretty rare north of the border), as well as the standard burrito, taco, and torta list immediately ran up the red flag. I was wrong. On sequential days I tried (a) one of their seafood dishes (Filete de Pescado a la Veracruzana) and (b) their Barbacoa (had it before....) and both were excellent. From the photo you can see the extremely generous smothering of olives, mild chiles, onions, and garlic-spiked tomato sauce on the fish; what you can't see is the tasty char they got on the unidentified fish filet before it got buried in the avalanche of vegetative goodness. The Barbacoa made me think I was in Mexico -- I didn't get a chance to ask but it sure seems like they have the pit out back where you bury the chunks of goat wrapped in either Maguey or Banana leaves over the pot to catch the broth, and then pile hot coals on top of the whole mess. The meat was fork-tender and flavorful; it was served with a small bowl of "consume"; which is normally just the condensed steam and juices collected from the slow roasting meat but in the case of Los Cuatro Vientos got jacked with a mild red chile, garbanzos, and rice to turn it into a light soup. Both dishes were served with sopa de arroz (Mexican rice) and frijolitos refrito (refried beans) which tasted like they were prepared by somebody who gave a damn rather than was just going through the motions. The ($2 for 4) order of tortillas hecho a mano (actually hand pressed rather then patted) really added an extra pleasure to the meals. Noteworthy also is their salsa bar, where the well-chilled salsas again tasted like somebody really cared and they added pickled red onions (dynamite with the barbacoa) and fire roasted jalapenos to the standard offerings. And if you're going with several people Los Cuatro Vientos offers shared platters they call "Comaladas" -- the Comalada de Carnes looks like the classic shared platter of meats that you find in the huge outdoor barbecue restaurants you find in Jalisco which are called "a platter of snacks" but is in reality a frakking huge and delicious group meal when you add in some tortillas, beans, and hopefully guacamole. Order one with a bucket of beers like I saw several groups doing, and you're set for a couple of hours of shooting the sh**, watching futbol on the big screens, and gorging on meaty goodness. How cool of a place is Los Cuatro Vientos (The Four Winds) as a place to eat? How about quesadillas made with mushrooms or squash blossoms? The tortillas are freshly made, adding to the overall awesomeness. There's also corn fungus (huitlacoche) quesadillas, but after trying one they're pretty rich for one person to eat. They're perhaps better split between two or more people. Some on the Internet call huitlacoche Mexican truffles. Another gem of a food item to try: Molcajete. This is a sizzling hot pot with a mildly spicy tomato base and beef steak, chicken, chorizo sausage, shrimp, cactus, white cheese called queso fresco, one big onion and one big pepper. Much of it comes from scratch and not out of a can. This is a great place for people who like quality food that isn't expensive. I saw lines backed up out the door for Chipotle and wondered why we can't get the same level of enthusiasm for Los Cuatro Vientos, which has a greater variety of better food for less money. Some of it is people being intimidated by the language barrier. So I'm taking it upon myself to help people along, including giving translations for fillings available for tacos, burritos and quesadillas (see the list at the bottom). Granted, pig esophagus isn't going to be what everyone wants in their burritos, but some of the dishes are both delicious and different. And safe to eat for picky eaters. And you really need to try them in a quesadilla. The corn tortillas are freshly made (or at least taste that way) and the meal is just that much better with one. Also, ask what kind of drinks they have behind the counter. I'm not a horchata (rice milk) fan, but other drinks are tasty. Jamaica is a hibiscus ice tea and it's one of my favorites. Agua fresca de pepino is a drink made from cucumber, lime and sugar and is perfect on a hot summer day. They have a lot of the conventional Mexican food. If you go to the right end of the menu hanging over the counter, there are lists for less conventional Mexican food. They usually have four kinds of salsa in their salsa bar, including pico de gallo. I love the basic red salsa. It has a nice smokiness. Los Cuatro Vientos also serves breakfast and has deals on breakfast and lunch specials. Asada: Grilled beef Barbacoa: Slow-cooked meats. Being from SoCal, I am used to small Mexican Restaurants that are authentic - food that they would serve if you were a guest in their home. If that is what you are looking for, then you've come to the right place! I had the pleasure of meeting Raul, the owner, during my last visit and he shared with me that his vast menu are the items that he and his family serve at home. He excitedly told me that they also offer Suiza Enchiladas and he's working on getting it up on the menu. He's even toying with the idea of making it more of a sit down restaurant with waiters. Personally, I love the homestyle feel and don't think he needs to change a thing! If you are still not convinced, let me seal the deal for you. At 2pm on a random weekday, there was a steady stream of patrons. Raul shared with me that his website is only in Spanish and he has done very little advertising, but when he has, it has also been in Spanish. He realizes that he is in a hard to find spot (behind the Staples center, almost directly behind Ben Franklin) yet he doesn't seem to be hurting for business. We were the only English-speaking customers...so, definitely homestyle Mexican food. I showed him that he was on Yelp and then he told me that there have been a few articles written about them in RnR and some others that he found out about because others told him. I'm telling you, this is Reno's best kept secret!!! The menu that Raul and Los 4 Vientos offer includes just about anything you can think of! They have your typical burritos and tacos, but you can have them made with just about anything including lengua. Same with the tortas. They have menudo and flan. What more can you ask for? Oh, but you want a smoothie? Yup, they have that too. Not on the menu, but they make it for me every time, is the Chicken Chimichanga. When I asked for guacamole on it, you'd better believe she went back there and made me a fresh batch of guac! Last time I was in, we had the Chorizo con Huevos - best chorizo I've had! Nothing like the store bought...it had the consistency of sausage and all the flavor you expect from chorizo. The Huevos Rancheros had a fabulous tomato sauce on top, unlike many restaurants that just dump a ladle of jarred salsa on top. And, the carne asada tacos were cooked up fresh and to perfection! The décor was pretty much what I expected. I was greeted and seated as soon as I came in. I ordered the deep fried Tilapia to eat there and a tongue burrito to go. I was slightly disappointed in the fish. It was two small fish instead of one good sized fish that I have received at other places. Being small they were slightly over cooked. What I could eat of them was nicely seasoned. The beans and rice were pretty average although the rice was fluffy. The burrito was large and stuffed full of tasty things. Some of the meat was just a bit tough. This was my first time here, and I plan on going back to try some more menu items. Hopefully I will be able to raise my rating at that point. read more
