Los Bagels is a go-to place when visiting Humboldt Nation. They have some tasty baked items, but what do we all go there for: bagels. Actually, the last two items I had there were "slugs". They're basically "everything" bagels which aren't rolled into a circle, but kept as a straight line....well, I guess they look like 6-inch long slugs! I met Bill at a #Humboldt event and was intrigued by the story. I'll be honest, I'm an east coast guy with a pension for H&H Bagels, but when I walked into Los Bagels I was sold! Great friendly, comfortable atmosphere. Bagel books for cooks and kids. Good local coffee and the fresh bagels behind the counter. I had a Sushi bagel sandwich on a Jalepeno bagel and it was fantastic! Wasabi cream cheese, fresh lox, sesame seeds and cucumber! A combination I would have never invented but I'm glad I discovered. I got turned on to this place when I saw an advertisement in their window about homemade matzo. They were out, but then I knew a good place to take my honey for lunch when we got to Eureka one afternoon on our way to a concert at Humboldt State. He's Jewish, and knows about stuff like that. Anyhow, he had the bagel with lox, and I forget what I had, after I got a bite of his. I've never had lox before, and it was insanely yummy. We got some hummis to go, to use the next day for sandwiches....but ended using it for dip all afternoon, and it never made it to the next day. I'm probably biased having grown up in Humboldt (or maybe we're just extremely lucky), but these are the best bagels I've had in my life. Good and chewy, not dry, perfectly seasoned. You also have to love the interesting fusion thing they have going on here and unique artwork. My favorite: toasted slug with cream cheese, fresh tomato slices (they always have excellent ones), and thin red onion slices. My first impression was "Nice they have papel picado and are also selling bags with labels saying 'hecho en mexico' this place might be my new bagel spot" I then took a look around and see "slug slime" on the menu hmm very interesting... The bagels here are pretty good, however, the inside of this restaurant is a bit dingy and I would go so far as to say dirty. The seating is also very tight. This is a good place for a quick grab-and-go meal but not somewhere I typically would want to sit down for a prolonged period of time. This bagel joint is the bees knees. The bagels are soft yet crisp on the outside. The sandwiches are a fusion of delicious flavors. "The Cucumbin," my sandwich of choice on a Parmesan bagel certainly hits the spot. It has cukes, cream cheese, larrupin (a kind of mustard), and their slug slime sauce which is tangy and sweet. The service is friendly and the restaurant is sunshiny and well decorated. I was in Humboldt County for the weekend and went twice to this place. The bagels were okay. The first time, I ordered a multigrain raisin bagel, and the second time I got an onion bagel. I just wasn't impressed because it wasn't anything stellar. Locals rave about this place, but I didn't get the the hype. The customer service also left a lot to be desired. I think this establishment could benefit from using a number system to prepare orders. Everyone was huddling close to the counter waiting for their order to be called. The people working the counter weren't very friendly, though I get they were super stressed dealing with the crowd. I did like that they are fairly quick, and I loved all the merchandise they had available for purchase. I got a cool bag and free calendar with my purchase. read more

I miss this small shop. I'm not a bagel person, but i do enjoy eating their croissants (or "kwassant"), especially their chocolate one. Yummy! What I enjoy the most is their mexican hot chocolate. For those who havent tried mexican hot chocolate, it has nutmeg and cinnamon mixed in. I've yet to find another coffee shop that can match Los Bagel's hot chocolate. This morning was the best experience I've had there. The two guys working were very cool. Last few times I had nervous/uncomfortable people makin all sorts of mess. Maybe I should limit my visits to Friday mornings only. Espresso drinks are great, cookies/pastries good, & well, the bagels. Yeah. Get some. Los Bagels is a must eat at place. It doesn't matter if you're a local or just passing through, if you're hungry for a bagel I would highly recommend it. These are the best bagels I've ever had. Having grown up in the area and then leaving for college I was sad to leave it but my family would ship me bagels they were so good. The shop has a nice Mexican cultural feel and carries things like Mexican sweet bread. This is by far the BEST bagel place I've ever been to in my entire life. I love the atmosphere and the corbels staff. My favorite is the seafood combo on the multicultural bagel, love how is topped with several types of smoked fish on top of a nicely applied pillow of cream cheese, piled high with chopped black olives and drizzled with larupin mustard sauce. Absolute perfection. My beverage of choice is orangina which pairs well with the seafood combo. I can't wait to return to one of my tastebuds favorite places. read more

Bagels are kinda pricy for what they are but they taste pretty good. Its always really hot in there and crowded and its why I gave it such low stars because its almost a suffering amount of heat in there. The food is good though but I don't think its good enough to justify the price. read more

On a vacation trip, we decided to stop by Los Bagels. We love how welcoming and enticing the atmosphere is. The cultural displays are very appealing. We weren't even ready to order because we were so caught up in the look of the place. I've been eating bagels my whole life. I grew up in NY where bagels for breakfast are more common than donuts or cereal or bacon egg n cheese sandwiches. That being said I would not consider myself the be-all-end-all of bagel knowledge. The truth is bagels vary from place to place and everybody has thier favorites. That was a long backstory just to say, these bagels are OK but very expensive. If they were average size then they would be overpriced but, seeing as how these bagels are about 2/3 the size of a normal bagel, it's pretty much a rip-off. I dont know what it is about Humboldt but it seems that every category of food (sandwich shop, bbq, bagels, etc) has just 1 decent place and that place charges an arm and a leg just because they can. Isn't it supposed to be about peace and love up here? If Los Bagels were located anywhere else I would give them 2 stars. However, as bad as the pricing may be, they could make worse bagels and charge the same amount and people would still have to buy them. So they get an extra star for not going total Robber Baron on us. read more

What can I say? I always get a slug... because I can. Garlic. Pesto cream cheese and chopped black olives. I love the dense Jewish type bagel they make. Neat trick: buy the day olds, freeze them. Take one out nuke it in the microwave for 10-15 seconds and then cut and toast it. Same perfect texture. Great for those of us who don't live locally but still want some bagels occasionally. I kind of hate Los Bagels, but only because they have ruined every other bagel place for me. These bagels are chewy and almost dense -- a much better mouthfeel than anything I've found in the Bay Area. Plus you can get them with Larrupin's. BEAT THAT, POSH BAGEL! Even better than the bagels though? The corn-lime cookies. You might be thinking, "WTF? Corn-lime cookies?" I know I did. But they are made with cornmeal, giving them an amazing texture, and paired with tart, tangy lime juice/zest. They are sweet, but refreshing and light (probably deceivingly... I suspect there's a heckuva lot of butter in them). I could probably eat a dozen. I routinely eat a half-dozen. Go eat at least one for me. read more

On a road trip with my boyfriend, we stopped in Arcata for a few days to go hiking in the Redwoods. We came here for breakfast both days and it was so good. We split n shared a Cucumbin and Seafood special the first day and they were both Delicious. The second day my boyfriend decided to get a Veggie Delight with a curry spread at 7 am. I don't recommend doing that! But the Guac and Lox more than made up for it. Too bad the nearest location to LA is so far! I salivate at the thought of Los Bagels and no visit to the area is complete without at least one stop there. It's the atmosphere, it's the Hispanic-Jewish-Kosher thing, it's the cool staff, it's the local products, it's the mural, it's just such simple baked goods and everything else they have that are perfect. There are nothing like Los Bagels Bagels. I recommend getting a slug toasted with cream cheese and a side of Larapin sauce. Ask for the Larapin sauce on the side or it might get a little messy while eating. If you want to get additions like salmon or lox then prices start getting a little expensive. This Jewish/Mexican bagel shop is the "cream cheese" of the crop! Absolutely fantastic! The selection of bagels is wide and super delicious... not to mention you can get one for a mere .85 cents per bagel. I've tried the onion and the garlic bagels. My friend has told me that the sesame bagels are wonderful too. Los Bagels also has a selection of sandwich and specialty bagels. I've been twice and I tried a Thai bagel and a Cucumbin when I was there. Including a cup of orange spice tea, I was able to eat for under $5 both times. I can't say enough about how delicious their sauces are either. My room mate introduced me to their Larrupin' Goods, a Swedish mustard dill sauce. It tastes fantastic on practically anything you'd eat mustard on and then some. When I was at Los Bagels, I tried the jalapeno jelly. Equally delicious. The potato kinish is a one of kind item that I guarantee youll never find anywhere again. Light flakey pastry with a delcious curryish potato inside. So so good!
