Lotus Hunan rocks. I've worked nearby for the past 9 years and I go there once a week or so. The woman who often waits on me knows ahead of time that I want mustard and chopsticks and just automatically brings them. The guy that often works the front, hosting and cash register, is super cool and friendly. I think they're both family members. Siblings perhaps. When I only have a short time for lunch, I come here. I recently started working off of Mopac & Barton Skyway & was anxious to find some great new (new to me) restaurants. I happened upon Lotus Hunan while driving down Bee Caves and decided to give it a shot. I was NOT disappointed. The staff is super friendly & the food is terrific. Good quality meats & vegetables, not the less than stellar plates you can get at some chinese places. Less than $10 for an entree, soup, egg roll & drink with plenty left over for another meal! I love the Chicken Almond Ding & Ma Ma's chicken so much that I have yet to order anything else from the menu. Their hot 'n sour soup is so good (and I have tried a lot of hot 'n sour soup around town). You won't be disappointed if you give them a try and their menu even says they deliver!! read more

I eat here about 1-2 times a month, mostly through take out. The portions are great and the service is top notch. This is not westernized chinese full of over-breaded meat scraps. i definitely recommend the ginger duck or chicken. i definitely stomp my feet quickly to get here as often as i can. read more

My colleagues and I have always enjoyed going to LH for lunch. The food is great and the service is fast. What is not so great is one particular server who we've had the misfortune of getting the last 3 visits. She doesn't EVER smile and treats you like you are bothering her. I know it's been open for a long time, but they benefit from no competition (there is maybe one other Chinese restaurant in the area). This place has declined into a real dump! It stinks, it's dirty, the food is bland, and the service is by far the worst I have ever experienced in my life. I always try my best to be polite and respectful to ANY person serving me no matter what type of business or who they are. When it happened the first time a few weeks prior during a lunch visit I thought I would never return again, but one evening I wanted Chinese food and stopped by, sat down, and ordered fried rice. I can't imagine any reason why, but the waitress was so completely rude I almost couldn't believe it. Then when I finished paying the bill with my credit card, I gave her a $2.00 cash tip. She got upset and proceeded to argue that she deserved more and that I didn't give here the "required" percentage. I responded by picking up the $2.00 from the table and started walking toward the door. She then raised her voice and started complaining to the manager in front of all the customers that I was leaving the restaurant without giving her a tip. I stopped and looked into the manager's eyes and gave him the opportunity to say something. The waitress continued to complain loudly as if she expected the manager to physically stop me and take money. I continued to stare into his eyes and gave him the opportunity to say something. I got the impression that he knew what a totally terrible person she was and he had this helpless look on his face as if there was nothing he could do about it. He didn't say a word or even attempt to apologize for her behavior. After a few moments I continued leaving and I could her yelling more loudly at the manager as the door swung closed behind me. read more

This is, by far, the worst Chinese food I've had in the Austin area--and that's saying a lot!! I went with my wife and son and we should have walked right out after we walked in as we noticed only one other person in there during lunchtime. But we were hungry and there.... The glasses that the water was served in were very dirty and an actual can of coke was $1.75. But the worst of it was the food, or what passed as food. The "sesame chicken" was just small bits of old meat...not sure if it was chicken as it was too dry to distinguish. The shrimp dish and the general tso's weren't much better, as they both tasted like Lean Cuisine dishes with too much salt. We will NEVER go back there again. You might want to avoid this place if you want good quality food---or even mediocre food. read more

My wife was wanting some Chinese, so we decided to try a new place. I'm sad to say it will be our first and last time at Lotus Hunan. Although the staff is super friendly, the food was not good. Everything was too greasy to eat but the crab Rangoon. I shouldn't be picking up egg rolls with my fingers being coated in a layer of grease. The Sweet and Sour Chicken was worse. Got that one for my children and after I tried one all I tasted was Canola oil. Not to mention the oil was dripping off the chicken. Orange Chicken tasted of oil and the Szuchuan beef tasted of oil as well. We threw all the food away. Worst Chinese food I have ever had! Greasy, bland, and the brown rice (which they charged $2 extra for) was like a ball of silly putty! The corn soup did not have a speck of corn in it. I have been going to the Lotus Hunan restaurant for years and they serve some of the very best Chinese food around. The food is great and the service is always outstanding. It is a family run restaurant and they make you feel a part of that family. A few of my favorites are: Beef Hot Pepper Sauce (add shrimp). This makes a great surf-n-turf Chinese dish. Combination fried rice (spicy): This is the best fried rice that I've ever had. And my own creation of: chicken, white onions, green onions w/the sauce used in Beef Hot Pepper sauce. I really cannot say enough good things about the Lotus Hunan. If you are a fan of Chinese food or just good food in general then a visit to the Lotus Hunan is a must. read more

First of all, I'd like to say that the food here actually tastes good. I tried it for the first time today as I have been searching for a decent Chinese restaurant to meet my craving once in awhile. I ordered a beef broccoli lunch special to-go and unlike most restaurants I've been to in Cali, this restaurant actually includes the soup for to-go orders. I was pleasantly surprised by the hot and sour soup and by the portions of meat and broccoli I received. So why only 3 stars? Well, I personally think standard Chinese dishes such as these should go for around $5-6 max and not the $8 I ended up paying here after tax. Try going to any Chinatown in the US and see if any of the locals pay that much. You'll quickly go out of business. I didn't look at the dinner prices, but if my "lunch special" was $8, I shudder to think how much more it might be. Perhaps it's because I work in WestLake where many wealthy people live and have no problem shelling out $10 for chicken chow mein or sweet and sour pork. read more

I visited Lotus Hunan Chinese for the first time today. Upon entering the restaurant, it was quiet and dark. There were approximately 3-4 tables occupied by guests. I approached the counter and stood there for 7-10 minutes. I saw a female employee talking on the phone and the conversation appeared to be related to a person on the other end of the phone placing an order. I saw a male employee going to the tables checking on the guest. Both employees appeared to make eye contact with me. Finally, an employee comes to the counter and offers me the food prepared for another customer. I informed him that I had been waiting to place an order. He told me that he would get someone to place my order. An employee came to take my order--shrimp in garlic sauce, steamed rice, and a vegetable egg roll. I was told that it would take ten minutes. My order arrived within 10 minutes. I paid approximately $15 and left. However, while I was waiting for my order, a White woman entered the restaurant and stood in the exact spot I was standing in. In less than one minute, an employee approached her and asked whether she was picking an order. Here is the thing, I am an African-American woman. I couldn't help but wonder why I had to wait 7-10 minutes for an employee to attend to me and the White woman received service in less than one minute. So, I had that negative customer service experience, which I believe to be based on my race and the food was nasty. The shrimp tasted fake. The shrimp in garlic sauce was pretty much fake tasting shrimp and water chestnuts in a dark sauce. They also didn't give me much steamed rice. In sum, I waited 7-10 minutes to be served because of my race, watched White privilege in action, and paid $15 for gross Chinese food. I will not be returning to Lotus Hunan Chinese Restaurant and would not recommend it. read more

This is seriously the best Chinese food in Austin! You might have avoided this restaurant before because it is in a strip mall, the decor and ambiance are pretty boring and leave much to be imagined, and the restaurant is always really quiet, with only about 8 people in there at any given time. You might wonder how a place like this stays open when it's so dead at dinnertime, but once you eat the food, you'll understand. And then you notice that, during the hour that you're there having dinner, about 15 people come in for takeout. This is a neighborhood favorite for Westlake. Lotus is run by a very nice family, and if you come in often enough, they will befriend you and know what your regular meal is. The food is very high quality (especially the meat, even though people have just told me this because I don't eat meat myself), reasonably priced, and delicious. They make everything from scratch. They might have all of the same old tried and true options on the menu as other Chinese restaurants (lemon chicken, beef and broccolli, etc.), but they do it better than anyone else. oh yeah! Lotus Hunan or as me and my friends call it "Lonus Hutan". Been in Austin since 75' and have eaten my way though so many chinese restaurants I can't even list them all,....this place rocks. I am talking about excellence in food here. Its sooooo badly underrated and I think its because there is literally NO hype about this place. No doormat, no candles, no hot hostess.... but if their was... you would see this place written up for miles because the father is serious about kicking some Chinese food butt! The decor is a bit dated but get over it, if you want visual stimulation bring a good looking date and stare at him/her- I have had a number of plates- beef broccoli is awesome but the hot pepper beef and hot pepper shrimp are out of this world... especially the shrimp. I pretty much burned myself out eating there so much and every time I go in they ask me whats up and where have I been. read more
