Meh. I just don't get it. First of all, forgive me for my old lady tirade, but: if I want to eat, I go to a restaurant. If I want to drink, I go to a bar. I don't really know which of the two this place was trying to be, but it wasn't working for me. I feel like the atmosphere is about 80% bar...maybe 90% bar? But every table in the entire place seemed to be eating pizza. Confusing. Bottom line, I just don't enjoy having to scream at my friends over dinner. As others have said, the service here is dismal. The bartender admonished my husband for trying to order a drink from the bar after we had been seated, and subsequently abandoned, at a table. Once we finally got to put a drink order in, refills were never offered. The food took forever to come out. Once it did come out, the pizza was extremely forgettable, in my opinion. People... stop being a bunch of pansies and whining about burnt crust! It's not burnt, it's CHARRED to perfection. The pie is supposed to be that way, which makes it excellent and true to Chicago thin crust standards. The 'crunch' at the ends of the crust is truly what makes their pizza pie so awesomely special. Visiting my sister who lives in the area nearby and is a Louie's regular, we nearly come to blows fighting over the edge crust slices. Worst service ever!! We waited an hour to be seated and another 30-45 minutes for our food to be brought out. When our pizza finally made it to our table, our order was totally screwed up and our waitress gave US attitude about it! We asked to speak to the manager about the way she was treating us and he was even worse than she was!! I was completely blown away. I have never been treated so poorly in a restaurant. And the pizza is definitely not worth the abuse...the pizza that we ended up eating (which we did not order) was just swimming in grease. And to top it all off, the area around our table looked like it hadn't been cleaned since the place opened. With the abusive staff, the greasy pizza and the dirty environment I felt the need to immediately go home and shower after I left this place. These negative reviews are just mind-numbing. I would NEVER usually give online reviews a second glance, but when it comes to Louie's, I will waste my time and defend them til I die. I've been a regular for about 2 years now, and the bartenders, servers, and everyone involved, treat me like I've been there since day 1, and do so with all guests. The servers are some of the most on-top-of-their-shit I've been around. People bitching about seating time: dude, it ain't Applebees! It's a small joint, and not that big! Not to mention, it's a popular place, hence the table wait time! As for food wait-time... Once again, it's a small, neighborhood place. If the kitchen has an influx of orders, it may take a sec! Get over it! Either enjoy a beverage, or don't bother making the drive south of 635, or whatever suburb you live in! I won't even dignify the complaints about the food, because anyone that does complain, is just too used to the bullshit they eat throughout their mundane life. I don't buy or bite into this "amazing pizza" personally, but Pizza is always controversial. I like thick, thin and in between (same with my burgers). That being said I'm talking about the Pizza and can't give it more than 3 very average stars. It's just not that great, and the Food Network may have made a visit, but that doesn't mean the pizza is fabulous or the absolute best in Dallas! More so that it's an institution on Henderson going back to the days before we had more than a handful of sushi options in big D. Much less the pizza options we have now with Fireside, Grimaldi's, Urbino, Campania, Bryan Street and many others. It's above average pizza at times, but no better than that unless we wanna start doing a Domino's or Campisi's compare and contrast here. After years of going I think it used to be better, but there wasn't so much competition either and that's also when I used to think Campisi's was great as well. Plus, Louie's is more crowded than ever now, and not worth it to me. I liked it when it wasn't so "discovered". It was quite a nightmare with a group of girls last weekend that didn't have their cash. Will I ever get my cash back? Not likely, but I was prepared for this pizza ball of confusion and arrived with extra just in case. I guess something about watching that green disappear so rapidly makes everything less pleasant when the food wasn't great, nor the service. I do like the atmosphere if I can park and remember to get cash. I don't even mind the cranky wait staff at times. They seem a bit nicer during the week when they aren't as slammed. Especially with some of the crowd that seems to annoy the regulars as well. It used to have a relaxed feel that was fun and so cool. That would have given them 4 stars in my past, but sadly they are a 3 to me these days. That's certainly not bad, but not as good as it used to be. I don't see the growth of Henderson as a negative at all, but the changes can have negative impacts. I was not a regular, but I think all of this has driven many people away that used to frequent Louie's. I can't blame Diner's, drive in's and dives for driving me away, but I doubt I'll be going back soon. I've never gotten it to go and honestly think most people are enjoying their pizza after a few adult beverages making everything taste better? That's all I can surmise. I finally had the infamous Louie's pizza today! And sure enough our waitress was a bit surly. It was really early so she was just setting up the tables and it took a bit before we got menus. Off to a rocky start but within 10 minutes the place was packed and 3 more waitresses arrived. The small Greek salad is plenty for two and has a great tangy vinaigrette. However, it came with one tomato wedge and one pitted Kalamata olive. ONE of each, not cool if you want to call it a Greek salad. But thank the good Lord for the super nice redheaded waitresses that took over and kept us happy. She kept tea glasses full and delivered our piping hot pizza. The Italian sausage was delicious and they did not skimp on the cheese or pepperoni either. The table next to me ordered a plate of pasta with meatballs that looked amazing. The bartender was really nice too. I loved how dark it is inside and they had the coolest Art Deco pendant lighting above the bar. I was also a fan of the AC on full blast. I figured out why the aforementioned surly waitress has such a sour attitude. You see, Louie's has been around for ages and it was obvious that the manly men at the bar are long time regulars. Way before second hand smoke was the devil, I'm sure this placed was a fun bar with strong drinks, dark, and smoky. But now you have to smoke outside in the 100 degree weather and come back in to see people bringing their toddlers and small babies! It's not what Louie's was ever meant to be and she's pissed. So rest assured, I'll be back with my cash for some thin crust pizza but I'll leave all children at home until they are old enough to drink! I'm just hoping I get the nice waitress again. read more

The best pizza in Dallas? I think not. I came into Louie's in the late evening last week anxious to try this famous pizza that they have. I was surprised at how big the inside is since it is VERY unsuspecting from the outside. We were greeted by friendly staff and our waitress almost immediately joined in on our banter. I was surprised to see how pricey the beers were - more expensive than the Angelika which we had just come from! A round beers and a large pizza order later, we were shoving our face with piping hot, cheesy....flatbread? Was the pizza bad? Not really. Was it good? Not really. I found that the pizza was just sort of there and didn't do much to live up to the hype I've heard. Two beers and a mediocre pizza for $32? Hold your horses, this isn't some doucher place like Sfuzzi. On top of that they only take American Express or cash here and don't even have an ATM. I imagine I would come back on some drunken night but as far as heading here when I'm craving pizza, I'll pass. read more

Being from NYC I am admittedly a bit of a pizza snob so I'm always hesitant when I try it anywhere else since my standards are so high. My boyfriend recommended this place and told me it's an institution in Dallas. First of all as others have mentioned they only take cash and they don't have an ATM on the premises. They're missing out because we probably would've ordered more had we been able to use card. It's also shocking now with things like square. We ordered a large pie with pepperoni and then pineapple on one half and mushroom on the other. The crust is good, the sauce is a tad salty, and the pepperoni is great. I definitely enjoyed the pineapple and pepperoni combo more because the pineapple balanced out the saltiness of the sauce and pepperoni. I especially liked that the crust was charred as that's what I've become accustom to. That being said I didn't like that the pizza was party cut. If you don't know what this is it's when a pizza is cut into rectangles by cutting lines across and down. Maybe it's just a mental thing but when eating pizza I need a slice. The waitress was nice but service was slow. We got there five minutes after they opened and it took thirty five minutes from the time we ordered to get our pizza. Now I do understand when a group of people walk in at one time it causes a rush on the kitchen but you would think they would be a little more efficient since this is a mainstay in Dallas. All in all we saw our waitress three times in an hour. Once to order, once to drop off the pizza and then on the way out to pay. I ended up leaving a $4 tip on a $26 ticket because I felt the service was lacking. I love when restaurants stay true to their roots and style, but if you are going to charge higher prices then you need to make it worth it. I definitely wouldn't say my pizza was worth the $23 I spent. I don't know that I would necessarily come back although I wouldn't avoid it at all costs either. I was really looking forward to trying their pizza based on all the great yelp reviews but I'm starting to think the people that eat Louie's pizza may be intoxicated therefore anything taste great. You have to fight parking and long waits. We waited 30 minutes for our pizza, go home, open the box and we have the wrong pizza. Turn around go back and get a new pizza. We ordered 1/2 pepperoni with garlic and 1/3 hamburger with garlic. I like my hamburger meat to be small crumbly pieces while this was huge gross chunks of hamburger (think meatball size). The hamburger had zero seasoning. The crust was burnt on the outside and soggy on the inside. One positive note was the greek salad with feta cheese. This was their one saving grace. Good salad. My vote for best pizza would be Olivella's if you like cracker crust in a wood burning oven. Sorry Louie's. read more

I'm sure the food is good because it smells so great in there, but I've never stayed long enough to find out because we always leave before we can order anything. I've been in this place twice and I have to say...the staff hates life. They're incredibly rude and uninviting. We went in there yesterday afternoon for a snack and a beer. The surrounding bars and restaurants were packed and there were FOUR PEOPLE here. I can't imagine why... Just because you're a dive bar with great food, doesn't mean people will come to you. YUM. Saw this place on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives and just had to give it a shot. It definitely fell into the "dive" category. Thin crust pizza, topped with onions, jalapenos and chicken + mixed drinks (they have a full bar) + good company = awesome meal. Be sure to bring cash. They don't take Visa or MC - only AMEX or cash money. And who uses Amex? The pizza is thin crust. You pay for each topping, so it can start to add up quick. Our large pizza ran at $20. Like the Force, Louie's has a good side and a dark side. The Good Side: The pizza and the bar. The pizza here is better than most. It has a light, thin, crispy crust. It's not over-topped, soggy, or greasy, though it is a little saucy. The bar is very well stocked, and we didn't think the prices were bad. Keep your order basic, though. This isn't the type of place for fru-fru drinks. The Dark Side: Hours, parking, payment options. We have been here a grand total of one time because every other time we've tried to go it was closed. Sometimes it opens at 4:30 p.m. Sometimes it opens at 5:30 p.m. Sometimes it opens earlier, but doesn't serve food until later. Naturally, they don't have a website that lays out their byzantine schedule, or even post it out front for that matter. Parking is a nightmare. If you're lucky you'll be able to grab a spot up front next to the building, otherwise you will end up wandering up and down Henderson and the adjacent streets hunting for a spot you will likely never find. Finally, payment. No cards except American Express. I'm sure the crummy little convenience store across the street makes its entire business off ATM fees. As for service and attitude, we didn't have a problem with either, contrary to what a lot of people say. Neither was outstanding, but they weren't particularly bad either. I love Louie's! It is my go to week night casual dinner spot. It is a total dive and completely unpretentious. It's Dark lit and has old furniture, but has new TVs that are great for watching a game! Hands down one of the best Caesar salads that I have ever had ( p.s. I'm kind of a salad connoisseur)! This is the main reason why I keep coming back. The pizza is good too. Way better than Campisi's, but I still think I prefer fireside pies more. They also have good crab claws but they seem to be out of them a lot. My boyfriend is also a fan of their famously strong drinks. A few warnings - This place is a no frills no fuss establishment. There are no garnishes on the plate, a stack of sharing plates is dropped in the middle of the table, they only take AMEX, and accept cash and there is quite often a wait. This place is Ok. It's hole in the wall. The chairs have questionable stains and it looks like it was once an office building or something... a very tiny office building. It's average pizza. Pretty greasy with a nice crunchy crust. The other food (e.g. meatballs) is ok as well. It's pretty greasy and touted as Italian food (but is really just extra food for a pizza joint.) They serve sodas and the expensive beer ($3.50 for a domestic) in the can... There is virtually no parking. You have to nab something on the street (of which is extremely limited). The most annoying part is that it's cash only. People rarely carry cash these days and having to take some out or remember to bring enough for a whole meal and expensive beer isn't worth the hassle. read more

This is an old school Dallas establishment that probably dates back to a time when Dallasites didn't know what Italian food was. It still has a pretty cool vibe (dive bar that serves casual Italian-American food, as someone else accurately put it). But the food is not authentic Italian by any means. If you accept that you are going to eat Italian-American fare, then you will have an enjoyable meal. The pizza was thin but my compliments end there. I have yet to find a place here in Cali, but I did find one while on a business trip to Dallas and that was Louie's! The place is in a shady neighborhood and since I was traveling alone, I ordered ahead. Keep in mind that they don't serve food before 6PM. I love Louies! It is my favorite pizza in town AND the best Caesar salad. It is a dive (which I also enjoy) so you have to go expecting casual atmosphere and service, few smiles and jolliness from the staff, can be crowded/long wait at peak times and only one not-so-pretty bathroom. It is basically a dark bar with great food. But it is worth if to me for the great pizza, salad and drinks. My hubby enjoys his beer in a can and I have my old school Manhattan and we laugh with friends. And, it is no longer smoky since they now uphold the smoking ban. Louie's has the best thin-crust pizza in Dallas, hands-down. Yes, it gets crowded and loud, and the service is sometimes bad. This can be avoided by sitting in the back room (if they are seating people there) and trying to get the good waitress. There is only one good waitress at Louie's, and she is the best waitress I've had. She is also the only young and attractive one, so is easy to spot. She remembered us and the drinks we ordered after only waiting on us 2-3 times. She is always super friendly and attentive. She is usually in the back room on weekends. Others have commented on the dive-y quality of Louie's. The atmosphere is completely endearing to me. It feels like a place you would find an old residential Chicago neighborhood, but it's on Henderson in Dallas. Please, oh please, don't let the soul-less part of Henderson (home to Consilient) take over this stretch! I recommend the Caesar salad and a pizza topped with garlic, tomatoes, and sausage. I'm a big fan of Louie's pizza - but it amazes me that for two people you can never get out of there much less than $50. I'm a big thin-crust pizza fan - so if you're not in to that- this place isn't for you. The salads are great as well - a small is enough to share between a couple people. The outside does look like a complete dive- and the neighboring area is still semi-sketch but it's all being developed and I'm sure soon enough we'll see more apartment/condo type stuff go up in that area. read more

I am giving this one a five based on the fact that it is the best pizza in Dallas, otherwise it is a four. This place it totally a local joint which I love about it since it reminds me of my favorite pizza place growing up in PA. I was only in Dallas for 6 months for work and only discovered this place in my last month on a recommendation. I think I went at least once a week for that whole month. The restaurant is not large or particularly up-to-date, but it is all about the food and people. I sat at the bar and ordered a pie and a beer. It was delicious. After searching all over Dallas to find a food that resembles the kind of pizza I grew up with, I found Louie's. It is thin crust and since I ordered pepperoni, nice and greasy...yum. The bar tender was friendly and always near when I needed something. He also seemed to know most people who walked through the door, adding a neighborhood feel to the place. If you are in the area or live in Dallas, Louie's should definitely be a destination on your itinerary. read more

Where to start. If I walked past this place on the street, I would probably never go in. It is a very strange all white exterior and has an old bar sign that says "Louie's" with a cocktail glass on it. Stop #4 on my Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives tour of Dallas-Ft. Worth. With me this time was a co-worker who hails from Chicago. So he could tell me if the pizza is legit. I didn't know Chicago had famous thin crust pizza! I had my friend order what a Chicaogan would order. Sausage, mushroom, and onion. It was perfect. Thin, thin, thin crust that was super crispy. The sauce was sweeter than normal for a pizza but worked perfectly with the italian sausage. I could drink that stuff. We devoured a 14 inch pizza, which by the way only cost $12 and $2 per topping. Had crab claws for an appetizers. Never had crab served by just the claw (the lower part of the claw). In a butter-wine sauce...really tasty, but not much meat. Cold beer, thin crust pizza, good service. Another winner for DDD. This area is FULL of little joints like this. Pretty cool. read more

I was leery about going here for a birthday party, because of some of the reviews. But I loved it. The pizza was great; I'm a sucker for a good thin crust. The sauce had an original sweet taste to it. Our server wasn't the friendliest, but she had no problem keeping up with drink/food orders even though we had a large party & it was packed. This pizza is as good as it gets. the crust is thin, the edges are snappy, crunchy, and perfectly toasted. The pizza shape is imperfect. The sauce is exactly what we have been searching for: rich, robust, well-spiced. Tasted like someone made it from scratch. The cheese is real mozzarella, full of flavor, no skimping here. The pepperonis were small, bright red, spicy, and curled up around the edges adding a new layer of texture. I will never tolerate flat, oily, pink pepperoni again! This is, by far, the best pizza in the neighborhood. It is officially our new place. Even "the pizza man" who is always silent and contemplative after tasting each pie on our pizza missions, took one bite and said, "Yep, this is it. We can stop looking." Though we got the pizza to go, we were delighted chill at the bar and chat. We loved the string lights, the tin tile ceiling, the lamps that leave the place just well-lit enough to get your drink to your lips and slice to your mouth. This place isn't trying to be anything more than it is. It is a real bar, a great restaurant, everyone is welcome, the place is flooded by neighbors and regulars.
