Does not disappoint. Portions are generous but not ridiculously large. Everything is flavorful and validates the claim that it's from scratch. Husband had the hamburger steak and eggs...wow! a real, hand formed patty that was thick and juicy. Eggs were actually medium as requested (he hates "snotty eggs"). I had the half portion of biscuits and gravy, very good and more than enough. Coffee was some of the best I've had in a diner. I like a nice medium roast and this was flavorful and rich and did not need cream(in my humble opinion). Waitstaff was attentive and friendly. I had been looking for a breakfast place that opens before 7 (let alone before 8!) because there aren't many options in northern Humboldt. It was great! I'll be going back for sure. I got a simple meal - eggs, basic, and toast - it was delicious and exactly hit the spot. I'll be coming back for sure. Staff was real nice, too (and very hometown/small town vibe). This sweet little eatery is what I would lovingly refer to as a "hole in the wall". There are less than a dozen tables indoors, with a couple of bistro tables outdoors. I was happy to get a table at around 8:30am on a Tuesday morning. There is limited parking beside the restaurant, which is located on Main Street, but there is a shared lot beside it that is shared by a few local businesses, and there is some street parking as well. Waitstaff was very friendly, and brought me a tall cup of coffee while I waited for my other guests to join me. For being such a small place, there is a serious amount of variety offered in their menu items. I was pleasantly surprised! I ordered a "Veggie Mess" which consisted of some seasonal vegetables scrambled up with eggs and potatoes. I asked if they could omit the dairy for me (no cheese or sour cream). The dish was still packed full of flavor. For my side I chose a homemade biscuit, and it was to die for. The portion for this breakfast was huge! I took half of it home with me and ended up eating it for lunch a few hours later, so this breakfast covered two meals for me. Just how Brian used to make it. A few people know I grew up in Ferndale. And a few people know my mother owned the main street cafe that flourished due to its hot coffee, breakfast menu, and of course, its biscuits and gravy. The cook, Brian made the most amazing biscuits and gravy, and L's reminded me of just how much I used to love it. My hash browns were tasty, my chicken breast cooked well - wonderfully given as a side - and the biscuits and gravy were delicious. I really wanted to try the cinnamon roll but they were out. I got a berry turnover instead and it was so good. I got the blueberry pancake with strawberries and whipped cream and marionberry syrup which my husband scarfed down before I could get a bite . I also got a breakfast burrito and even though they forgot the salsa and sour cream on the side it was still delicious. My girlfriend and I tend to eat out a lot, so we can give you an honest comparison on everything from the taste to the price. That said, L's Kitchen can't be beat when it comes to getting value for your money. It's a small restaurant, making an already enjoyable experience even more so. (Let's face it: the more tables a waitress has to tend to, the less enjoyable your dining experience, which isn't a problem here, given how small the restaurant is.) And the food is every bit as good as the service. I ordered the Country Mess, which was a very large breakfast for less than $15. The best part? The sausage gravy wasn't some bland, white concoction of flour and water. Instead, it was a wonderfully seasoned topping of gravy prepared by someone who clearly understands their way around a kitchen. And it's not just the food and prices that were good, as our waitress was equally up to the task of ensuring that all of her customers felt valued. I genuinely enjoy going to this place and recommend it highly, giving it the coveted 5 Star Review, which is something I personally withhold for only the best of the best. This is THE best place I've been to in NorCal. This place has the hands down best home cooked food and everything is done so well. NOT TO MENTION THE GENEROUS PORTIONS! Im sad that I'll have to drive 7 hours just to eat here but trust me it's worth it! This little gem is somewhere that I could eat everyday for the rest of my life and not get tired of it! Such a huge disappointment today! We have eaten here in the past at least 2-3 times and had a great breakfast. Today was not the case. Our order was promptly taken but it took 40 minutes to get our food to the table. The food was greasy and didn't have a good taste. I ordered a spinach omelet without cheese. It appeared that cheese was added and then removed after it was realized that it should had be omitted, as there were pieces of cheese still on and in the omelet. My husband who loves biscuits and gravy took a couple of bites and then didn't want to eat more because it didn't taste good and it was really greasy. He didn't eat all his eggs either. After waiting for 40 minutes (only 3 small tables before us) I told my husband, the wait would be worth it....boy was I wrong. Terrible disappointment, perhaps they had a different cook today??? We loved this place. The waitress Ashley was really very nice and we me the owner too. It was clear that the cared about people and good food. There was a elderly couple there who finished up and the owner helped them out to their car, opened the door...that's cool. I had a Cajun Burger which came with a fresh cooked patty and real Habanero cheese...outstanding...wow. I had clam chowder that was great too. Michiru had a ham and cheese sandwich and could not get over the freshness. Even their ice tea was great. L's kitchen cared enough about the community to garnish their walls with a local artist works. That was of them. From the outside L's looks small, from the inside it looks perfect;y hospitable and warm. I'm going with 4 solid stars. I must confess, we didn't eat here though. We heard about their legendary chicken strips. Local chicks hand battered in top quality ingredients, sounds like some real good stuff! The kids were super excited too. Once we arrived, we ordered some waters, and 2 Eel River Brewing Co. IPA's and looked over the menu. We decided on the famed chicken strips only to be told they didn't make enough to last all day and were out. After careful consideration, and the fact the children would not accept anything less than delicious chicken, we decided to leave and come back another day. The server was apologetic, and hey, we both worked in restaurants so we understand! She didn't charge us for the beer which was nice.
