Luby's is still that girl, it was packed in there for most of our visit. And with them closing some locations, this one was definitely jumping while we dined for lunch. Idk why my mother chose Luby's for my dad's birthday celebration but we met there. LuAnn runs about $9/10 or you can get full portion of the entree for a couple dollars more. I ordered my Luby's favorite of liver and onions. I had to ask for extra onions but the lady my gave em to me no hesitation. It was as good as I remembered but their sides need work, ordered okra & tomatoes with mixed squash/zucchini medley. My companions ordered fried fish, chicken tenders with the mac & cheese. Nobody was really excited about their dishes but not much complaints either. We were helped by Ms. Hong. She was delightful for the most part except she completely interrupted us while I was praying. I went to this Lubys about 9 years ago and it was empty and the food wasn't great. Fast forward to now and I enjoyed my food. Something definitely has changed and lunch time was pretty busy. Wednesdays and Saturday are kids eat free. I wanted to take my kid to try some different food and take a break from cooking. His plate came with two big chicken tenders, 2 sides, a roll, jello, and a drink. Lots of food for a toddler and we took more than half of it home. I finally tried the fried fish. I want to say it is one of the most popular dishes and I liked it. My okra and mashed potatoes were pretty good. The roll was nice and soft, not warm, but soft. The servers are all very attentive and genuinely helpful. They keep the place clean and turnover seats quickly. Note: You get in line to order your food (like a cafeteria), but there are servers that can help bring your food to the table, bring you silverware/napkins , and refill your drinks. My mom gave me a gift card and I wasn't really too excited. Now don't get me wrong, I grew up with Luby's. Back when they would push the cart around, many meals were eaten here. But I feel like they went on a slow decline in the 2000s and a few years back, the meal I got was salty yet tasteless and mushy, and I hadn't been back since. But today, I was so surprised. Everything was flavorful but not overly salted. It was super packed so I'm hopeful that Luby's is back on track. Here's what I got: Roasted chicken (dark meat) 5/5: I picked the Lu Ann size and it was still a good sized portion. The chicken was super flavorful with lots of spices, well-cooked, and juicy. It comes with dressing, which I didn't care for. It has a spice, I think it's nutmeg, that I just don't like in dressing. However, the dressing isn't overly dry and had a good consistency. I didn't dock any stars for this because I feel like it's more of a personal preference. Macaroni 5/5: I could cry it was just as I remembered from my childhood. Not too mushy, right amount of salt, super creamy cheesiness. Fried okra 5/5: the breading and okra were perfectly done. I only had one woody piece of okra, but all the rest were tender. Pecan pie 5/5: I hate that I love pecan pie. It doesn't even try to hide that it's unhealthy. Like the high fructose corn syrup is just on full display. But Luby's makes an awesome pecan pie. I was kind of hoping they would be sold out, but they weren't, and I got it, and it still tastes good. I took off a star because of the customer service. The lady at the to go counter just seemed over it. I asked if they had eggplant because it was listed in the online menu if I placed a to-go order. She was like "uhhhh I don't think so" and tried to leave it at that. I had to ask her to check and see. They didn't have it, but it was just awkward for her to guess that they didn't and not take the initiative to ask. She did end up asking on the headset so she didn't have to go anywhere. I first discovered Lubys when I moved to Austin, Texas, a zillion years ago. I liked it right off the bat. Back then, I didn't know the meaning of "Do you want white gravy or brown gravy?" I wasn't cooking back then, and I still don't today, but I soon learned a lot of people like white gravy, and I do now. I have enjoyed all their dishes, and when I need a balanced meal, it's off to Lubys. But I do go in between during those times too. At least once or twice a week when I was living in Austin. I hadn't been to Luby's since I was a kid and decided on a whim to give it a try. The service was good and it was fairly quick going through the line even though there were a lot of people ahead of us. I ordered the Luann platter with fried fish, Mac and cheese and green beans. The fish was good and the half portion was enough for me with the sides. Tatar sauce was tasty. The Mac and cheese was really good - I'd come back just for that! You might as well skip the rolls as they were bland and looked better than they tasted. The restaurant itself was very clean and the staff were attentive. I have been in Houston 6 years and this is my first time going to Lubys. I actually enjoyed my meal. I loved the rotisserie chicken Mac and cheese and dressing. Like so many others, I was really dreading the closing of Luby's last summer, and I was thrilled when I heard it was bought out and would not close. I've been a big Luby's fan since college days way many years ago. Now after eating there tonight I'm like wishing someone would put Luby's out of their misery, and mine. I knew it had gone down recently, but tonight was shockingly terrible. We went at 6 pm. The selection was very limited, the liver (don't judge) looked nasty. The cream gravy was watered down, the rice was under cooked (crunchy), the desserts were practically all gone and what was left was cut into tiny pieces and packaged and sold as a whole piece. My primary Luby's on Hwy 290 and W. Tidwell closed a few months ago and this one is almost as close to my home so this location will be my new go to. It is also located on the 290 frontage road near FM 1960 (in front of the Harley Davidson dealership) and is part of a large shopping center that includes other restaurants and an Academy Sporting goods among other stores. There is ample parking space here. Inside there is the one serving line and a very large dining room with a lot of windows. Recently I had the soup and salad combo for $6.99 which is a great value. My salad had many extras on it that I enjoyed and my clam chowder was good but just a little salty. Another visit was for the seafood pot pie with green beans and pinto beans. The pie had a nice flaky crust with shrimp and crawfish in it that was all good along with the veggies. This combo meal was about $12 and change including drink and tax. Luby's is a standard for home cooked style meals. Consistency and value here is the key and that's why I am a fan and will return. read more
