Ahh Lucky Boy. The place really could use a thorough cleaning, but I so love it anyways. The menu is a mix of Chinese and American standards, with some combination of the two in the Egg Fu Young Burger. My favorite is the Sweet and Sour chicken combo with wontons. Okay, don't judge a book by it's cover because if you do you would run out the door because the seats are old, the tile floors needs a cleaning, and walls well it would need some renovating. Sometimes you drive by a place a hundred times and then always plan to try it. This is one of those places. Finally stopped in. The location is pretty divey, but passable. I can't believe it....my buddy swore on his life that this place was amazing and he and his wife had been eating there for years. I show up and I can't believe what I saw sort of like the old drive in movie restaurant (from the movie Twister) mixed with some sort of Chinese food. It has not been renovated since 1980. I cannot think of a single restaurant that could get away with the look of this place but they did it. The food is phenomenal! My mouth instantly started craving it for the next 20 years after I took one bite. I go there at least once a week now and it never changes my mouth is in heaven and my mood is instantly happier. Wow! I save my 5 stars for the true magic and I found it. I found my dive. I am not positive this restaurant will last 20 years because the owners are aging so go in now! Don't wait! If my years of Yelping means anything I will use every last bit of my review power to get you to go here! Just completely forget about the look and focus on the food, you will thank me later. I always order the Sweet and Sour Chicken combo with a side of hot and sour soup. I had the green chile cheese burger once just to say I did and it was amazing but I am usually craving oriental foods and rarely burgers (I save that craving for Blakes, sorry). There's not even a category for it's cheapness on Yelp (Less than $5). It's scary looking inside and out, yes, but do not fear. I'm not a fan of chinese fast food, so all I've ever ordered is burger and fries (which were overdone this last time), but the chinese food has to be good, other people there keep ordering it, and this restaurant is still in business after all these years, given it's poor location and shoddy appearance that's an amazing feat. read more

Lucky Boy is awesome!! Everything here is good but there are a few standout stars. The sweet and sour chicken is amazing as are the egg rolls!! This means that the combination A is the obvious choice. The chicken is better than the pork. The pork is good, but the chicken is the best i have ever had anywhere!! Unlike your typical sweet and sour sauce, this one is not overpowering with a candy like flavor. The real secret to success here is consistency. The same couple has owned this place for at least 25 years that i have been going and i would swear they haven't aged 1 day. They have deep frying down to an art! The grease temperature is always perfect and so are the results. The chicken is never greasy and neither are the egg rolls. This is a can't miss item at a can't miss Albuquerque Treasure. Like I said at the beginning, everything is good here. The Wor Mein soup is also amazing! It's basically the best bowl of Ramen ever. Don't miss out on this place! read more

This is one of those places you drive by a few thousand times and it doesn't really exist until you step inside, sort of like the K-mart on Indian School and Carlisle. My roomie and I swung in here on our way to Smith's and it's what I expected sorta. Their menu is a mix of greasy American burgers and Chinese food. We got sweet and sour chicken and two cheese burgers. It was fine for the price, cheap. The chicken was actually higher quality than I expected and the burgers had some mystery special sauce which was tasty too. An elderly lady who I presume is one of the owners (husband must be the cook) said they've been there forty years! The place looks like they haven't decorated since never but it has its charm. For years I'd seen photos of the picturesque outside and had thought it closed down long ago. I usually save my calories for local beer but I would get a burger and split some fried rice and egg rolls in the future. Do yourself a favor and check out this old relic at least once. I made my first visit to Lucky Boy last week. It looks like a dive because it is a dive but don't let that concern you. I admit I've always been leery of going to this place because of its run down look, driving by sometimes I wondered if it was still open. I now wish I would have visited this place years ago. There's just no way I'm ever going to make up for all those lost years of inexpensive but good tasting food, especially the green chile, cheeseburger. My loss. If you've ever had doubts about this place because of its run down look then get over it and do yourself a favor and try it at least once. There's not a big menu selection but if you like green chile cheeseburgers then you can't go wrong with that as a first time choice. The double, green chile, cheeseburger was $3.90 and it tasted really good, it was very flavorful. The single patty, green chile, cheeseburger is less expensive but I don't recall its price. Fries are extra, I think a side of fries is $2.00 but don't hold me to it. I didn't get the fries, maybe next time I'll give them a shot. I'm not going to say the Lucky Boy burger is better than Blake's but because the burger was very flavorful then deciding which place is better would simply boil down to personal, subjective preferences. I like the burger at both places. If you want to read a review of a bad burger then read my review of Weck's. On my second visit which was today I got what I think was Combination plate "A", there's combination plates "A", "B", and "C", it was $3.30 and it was okay with a decent sized but not over-sized portion for the price. When I do go back I'll more than likely stick to the green chile, cheeseburger, but not always. Anyways, combination "A" was a choice of sweet and sour pork or chicken, I had the chicken, with fried rice and a very flavorful egg roll. Not bad for the price. I've had better but just to have something different from a burger I could see myself ordering this from time-to-time. Moving on to other information, facing the outside there are no posted hours. Inside the store the barely visible posted hours are 11:00am to 6:30pm M-F and 11:00am to 3:30pm on Saturday. In all seriousness the exterior has not changed for as far back as I can remember. And even though my first visit was last week I'm guessing the interior hasn't changed either. It's owned and run by an elder oriental couple (probably Chinese), the lady said they've been there for over 34-years. They must be doing something right if they've been in business that long and don't feel any need to improve the look of their restaurant. From talking to the lady she knows how the place looks and my best guess is that they really don't care. The lady was very pleasant to talk to and I got the feeling she enjoys conversing with the customers while she's cooking up your food. Again, don't let the dive look scare you. The other reason you shouldn't let the look of this place scare you is the kitchen is open and you can clearly see what is going on while your food is being prepared. Even though I've only been there twice, I will definitely be going back because the green chile cheeseburger was really - really good. And one other thing, this place has no waiter service. You order and pick up at the counter, no big deal. I'm giving this place a 4-star rating because they serve up a great burger and because the egg roll with the combination plate was bursting with flavor. If you read my other reviews up to this point I've only given 2-star ratings. I'm a really good cook and for that it's just hard to impress me. I've been occasionally coming here for over 30 years, and I've always ordered the same thing: a burger, fries, and an egg roll. All three are delicious. The burger here has a unique taste. Nothing exotic or fancy, just unique. A little like Blake's Lotaburger, but different in a very good way. It is run by a very friendly couple that has been there as long as I can remember. The problem with this place is that, as much as I love the burgers, every time I go there (not that often), there is no way I can escape the feeling that maybe I shouldn't eat there because it just looks very unsanitary. It is run down, and I don't think the owners have put a penny into any type of maintenance, much less renovations, ever. Not even a paint job in over 30 years (or at least it appears that way). It's true, as others have said, that the kitchen is in full view, and it appears to be clean. But everywhere else you look will make you question whether to eat there or not. The floors are dirty. The blinds are old and falling apart. The vent covers are caked in grease and dust. The soft drink fountain machine is no longer working, yet it's still on the countertop gathering dust and grease. The tables and chairs are clean, but they're old and run down. The truth is that on appearance and cleanliness, this is place deserves 0 stars. Yet, because their food is delicious, and the owners are very friendly, and because I've never gotten sick there, I keep going back for more. read more

The space is small, I would have never stopped but a co worker took me once and I am grateful. Beware, your clothes will smell like fried grease when you leave. Ive been going to Lucky Boys since I was a baby and my dad has been going there since he moved to NM to go to UNM. The place is aged and grungy looking but it's actually a great place to eat and hang out. The food is cheap and there is a TON of it! It may not seem sanitary but it is clean and neither myself, nor anyone else I know have ever gotten sick from it.
