Wow I've heard great things about the Lucky Dragon and I can see why. It's doesn't look appealing on the outside and the parking is a little wonky but it's definitely taste amazing. Enter in and wait to be seated. The older gentlemen who sat me was also checking customers out. But he led me to a table quickly. The space is definitely small so it does feel like everyone is invading your personal space. There are three buffet stations and they have pretty decent assortment of food to choose from. Eating here felt like the quintessential Chinese buffet I went to as a kid. Everything was well seasoned and fresh. Nothing looked like it was dry and sitting for too long. I tried this place on the day the electricity went out, so you know I looked at them as a lifesaver! This restaurant is hands down, so far, my favorite Chinese restaurant I have tried. Wow!! What a welcome surprise in North Kansas City!!! Lucky Dragon Chinese is seriously good food with seriously-big portions! I'll share that in my opinion, since moving up here a couple of years ago, its been a real disappointment when it comes to dining out. With very rare exception there just aren't many great options available unless one is satisfied with fast food, the typical chains, or a near-endless supply of mediocre (or worse!) Mexican and Chinese restaurants with filthy floors, sticky tables, unclean menus, and staff that either can't speak the language of the USA or they lack the proper customer service skills to do so. As a result, the precious few good places which do exist north of the river are often too busy to get into unless one has the luxury of trying to arrange a reservation - if the establishment accepts reservations, that is. But after driving by Lucky Dragon Chinese several times in downtown N. Kansas City and wondering if it was worth trying, my wife tagged me with dinner responsibilities the other night. Since I was working late and knew I didn't want to go home only to head back out to find a nice place for dinner SOUTH of the river somewhere, I began poking around the web with a local search for something "different" near our home. Lucky Dragon Chinese popped up several times, so I read a few of the reviews and they were positive, with most referencing the freshness of the food, and the kindness of an older gentleman assumed to be the owner. As an entrepreneur I prefer supporting other business owners out there whenever/wherever we are able, so with the supporting positive reviews regarding their food, I decided to give them a try for carry-out. OH MY GOODNESS! There was so much food! And it was all SO GOOD!! My wife had the Chicken w/Broccoli, which she said she thoroughly enjoyed because of the freshness of the broccoli and the tenderness of the chicken. The garlic sauce it was in was flavorful, but not over-spiced at all. We split a Hot & Sour Soup and Crab Rangoon as an appetizer, and both were among the best we've had in quite some time (possibly since moving back home to the Midwest!). The soup had a nice blend of the required 'heat' in a Hot & Sour Soup, along with a reasonable level of the vinegar-y bite on the back of the tongue. The Crab Rangoon were big and stuffed full of cream cheese, imitation crab meat, and scallions. I had the Yu Hsiang Scallops & Shrimp, and it was very, very good. Great balance of vegetables with the scallops & shrimp, and all very fresh and flavorful. The sauce was one of the hotter Yu Hsiang dishes I think I have had (so it was SUPER hot by the time leftovers came around!), but good nonetheless! And we had leftovers for days!! All in all, Lucky Dragon Chinese Restaurant is well worth the stop! Don't let the simple exterior fool you; the food being prepared and served inside will be a very pleasant surprise!! When I walked in, I was immediately greeted by a tall man near the front door. There was a worker, mopping the floor, and I could see and smell how clean the place was. I let the greeter know I wanted to place a to-go order and he showed me to a menu and a place to sit down to be comfy while I reviewed my food options. Everyone was super friendly right off the bat. I placed my order and did not have to wait long for my food. The same man who greeted me was the one who gave me my food, and he wished me a fond farewell and told me to stay warm on this cold evening. The service alone is what will bring me back to this place. It smelled so good in the car that I wished I had a fork and someone else was driving so I could start tasting it on the way home. Finally, I was home and able to dish up. My daughter tasted hers first. "So good!', she proclaimed. After my first bite I agreed. Restaurant has plenty of seating in the dining area. The spring rolls had a thin and crispy wrap, and came with a piping sweet and sour sauce. The Sa Cha chicken was mildly spicy and had a nice mix of vegetables and mushrooms. The fried rice was savory and the beef was tender and delicious. The slices of meat in the dishes were on the smaller side, but we were full with food left over to take home. The staff were really kind and inviting. Overall, I was really impressed by the high quality of Lucky's (American) Chinese food, which is hard to come by in Kansas City. Lucky Dragon is my go-to Chinese place in KC. I've tried Bo Ling's and find it overly sweet and inauthentic. I've tried Red Dragon and it's decent and cheap, but not great. Lucky Dragon is yummy. I have to admit, I've never visited the actual restaurant. Lucky for me, Lucky Dragon delivers to Crossroads. The driver quality varies, frequently they don't even get out of the car. Still worth it. The dishes use fresh, real vegetables. The tofu is fried well. The sauces are not Americanized with massive amounts of sugar. The crab rangoon are tasty. Every order over a certain dollar amount gets you a container of Chinese donuts as well. What more could you ask for? read more

Food was 2.5 Stars and since Yelp doesn't allow half stars, the reason for 2 star rating and half star reduction is the to go packaging experience. This is typical Chinese food options with big portions. We ordered General Tsao chicken, orange chicken, happy family, and beef and brocolli togo. I was a little disappointed in the happy family because I felt it was more veggies than all the seafood & meat described. Considering we bought over $30 they threw in some meat skewers and donut desert things. (Or maybe because we were new in the neighborhood and they wanted to sell us). I wish though the packaging was better that way I wouldn't be so disappointed. We ordered to go and had to take it back to a house that had no napkins, waiting for running water, and the $35 plus worth of food bags had no napkins in the bag, silly me should've known better this may be a grab your own napkin restaurant. The sauce from all the boxes was oozing out making the bag and utensils and back of boxes all sticky. Kind of annoyed me that I couldn't enjoy my meal and that myself and others had to endure a meal so messy it was not what we signed up for. I think if the business was going to pack the stuff so poorly, they should at least provide napkins or at least ask us if we needed any if it's not in the bag already with the utensils. Food taste normal, but I rather go back for lunch buffet than buying what we did since the buffet was only $5.94 after tax. read more
