Awww yeah, Fried Chicken. If you're gonna clog your arteries and shorten your life by a few, you mind as well do it in style w/ some quality fried chicken. I'm not much of a fried chicken guy, but once in a blue moon I'll get the urge and may give Church's or possibly KFC a shot. I think I'm gonna have to add Lucy's to that list. Lucy's got some recent press, KLBJ morning show (Dudley & Bob) ran a "best fried chicken" contest and Lucy's made it to the finals and took 2nd place (awwww). Those KLBJ guys were pumpin' up Lucy pretty hard during, so I got the itch and gave them a shot. Nice location - even though it's nestled back behind Congress and you could easily miss it, but the bright neon lights might grab you. Parking is limited and I like the set up and feel, a bar w/ TVs and seats plus plenty of tables. It's an open environment and can get quite loud when packed. I went to the bar and viewed the menu, I was solely interested in the fried chicken tonight and no fixins. I see a full bucket of chicken for $23.50 (feeds 4)....wow, a bit premium priced (IMO) and I'm not eating for 4, and I guess that's gotta be some damn good chicken. I find the 5 piece basket for $9 and relay my to-go order to the bartender. About 8-10 min later she hands me a white paper bag with my fried chicken - and it smelled pretty damn good. I couldn't resist and dove in for a test drive. Well it tasted pretty darn good, I was very pleased with the quality. It had a slight spicy/peppery kick to it and was definitely a nice change from the usual. Nothing outta this world, but still good. The crust can easily break into plenty of crumbs so I would not advise eating it in the car, or while driving, otherwise you'll find bits and pieces of the crust pop up in the most usual places - and it will never end. It was slightly greasy but not too greasy to the touch, and the bag eventually soaked it up and soon became transparent. That's fine by me since it tasted so good. It's very close to a 4-star rating and I'll definitely give them another shot. Overall it's very good chicken, slightly different from the rest and a bit premium priced (IMO) so there's no bang-for-the-buck here, but it's still good enough to warrant a repeat visit. I'm just going to dig right in... Tried the Fried Deviled Eggs, they were SO SALTY. I really wanted to like these things, I mean it's a FREAKING fried deviled eggs, but truth is they were rather inedible. There was way too much salt in the batter and at one point I got a ton of unmixed batter in one of the eggs, so I was just eating dry batter....GROSS!! Now its not all bad, the chicken....oh the chicken. It was pretty darn amazing. Super crispy, moist and juicy in the inside. I won't have any problems getting more of this delicious stuff. I was really excited to try this place out as was my husband whose favorite restaurant is Popeye's (I'm being dead serious). Both of us are somewhat health freaks so we only allow ourselves to eat fried chicken about once a month and we take it very seriously. First, we came here on a Saturday afternoon and got extremely lucky by finding 1 out of the 5 parking spots right in front of the restaurant. Parking along the street was full and it seemed like people had to park a good distance away to dine at the restaurant which always sucks. A restaurant always loses a couple of stars in my book if it's inconvenient for me to get to. Next, we started off with the deviled eggs and they were just blah and nothing special. I was expecting a lot more. However, the fried chicken was excellent and it tasted fresh and very crispy! As far as service goes, it was just okay. Usually fried chicken places go with picnic tables, those horrible gingham plastic table mats and the tea colored plastic water glasses. After frequenting this establishment quite a few times (dine in) for a decent, pleasurable experience, I think this will be the last time. I have to say I was very disappointed in the lack of food quality I received today for take-out service in addition to the poor customer service. I ordered a bucket of chicken (as is), an order of (4) corn muffins and a side of smoked potato salad. For starters my experience was already compromised before even ordering and picking up my food because when I was on the phone ordering- I said my name as Jamie and the first response I got was 'we already have an order for Jamie' (ummmm....do you think there could be more than one Jamie in Austin, TX?) As the person on the phone was arguing back and forth with another employee over who's order was Jamie's- I am sitting there in disbelief as what I am hearing. Honestly, I should have just ended it there at that pathetic display of (lack of) customer service. However, I gave the benefit of the doubt and proceeded with my order. When I went inside to pick up my food, I was standing there at least a solid 60 seconds before anyone noticed my existence. Then I paid the tab of $36 (nothing to sneeze at especially for chicken, bread and potato salad). I only glanced at the order and checked if all items were there...but to my surprise...when we got home and started eating, all the chicken was dark meat (which is cheaper than white meat and we like a blend) and UNDERCOOKED. The breading was soggy- which I kind of understand as it was a take out order but it was REALLY REALLY soggy. The cornbread was way over valued at nearly $5 for 4 small dry pieces. And the potato salad was just okay, nothing mesmerizing. The food we received for the money we spent was not up to par at all- and I am also very disgusted at the lack of customer service as well. You do NOT argue with another employee when a customer is on the phone to hear you and you certainly don't accuse someone that you already have an order for them- you could ask questions to avoid assumptions. Sweet baby Jesus is this place good! A friend called and wanted to know if I was interested in some fried chicken and being tired from work I started to mumble some lame excuse. Then on a whim decided "Ah, what the hell" and I'm really glad I did. I like the outdoor area, and layout to start with. I thought it was a little cramped, but being just over six feet I often think chairs and tables are to small. Especially on patios were they are trying maximize all the available space they can. We started of with the deep fried deviled eggs. Which is some kind of fat guy's wet dream. I'm not sure I want to eat them all the time, but did enjoy them even though I think the frying drys them out a little. Next we had a few different types of oysters. I think my favorite was the Funky, and Texan. The Funky is topped with fish oil, garlic, and a few other things I can't remember. The Texan is topped (almost overpoweringly) with chorizo. I didn't try the Austin since it has tequila mixed in and sadly tequila and I had to break up. We got a bucket of chicken for the table to share. I'm also a big fan of buying food in buckets. Who wouldn't want to buy all their food in buckets? I found the chicken to be crispy and flaky on the outside and juicy on the inside. I don't consider myself much of an expert on fried chicken, but I liked theirs a lot. I believe the pile of bones left on my plate attests to how much I liked the chicken. I found all of the wait staff to be super friendly. Including the guy who gave us a free basket of gizzards. Gizzards aren't something I ever order, and am not a fan off. But when I'm hungry and you set a basket of food in front of me... The finale gem of Lucy's was the smores pie. It was so good that I wanted to meet it's parents and ask for it's hand in marriage. Visited here for the first time last week. Was looking for something else and somehow Yelp pulled this up and I am glad it did. I prefer eating south of the lake and I must say this is one of the better places to go. I ordered the basket of chicken and mexican coke sweet potatoes and was very pleased. The 1st time the chicken was tender and not over done and while I am not a big fan of sweet potatoes I got to say I love the taste of theirs. It really depends on what you get. Fried Chicken (I can only rate the white meat pieces) - 3 stars. The chicken was cooked fine, the coating was medium crispy....but there wasn't any "wow" factor. "Austin Oysters" - 4 stars. Woodfired grilled with tequila, lime, chili sauce and cotija cheese. The winning dish for sure! (Although pricey at $13 for a half dozen). Fried Deviled Eggs - 3.5 stars. A good friend chose Lucy's for his birthday dinner gathering, and around 20 of us descended on the spot for a boisterous meal. Large parties who arrive at intermittent times are typically a challenge for any restaurant, but Lucy's felt more like home in that they allowed people to be seated and order food, and other people could be fit in as they arrived. True, old-school, family-style friendly service. The staff appeared completely unruffled at our party - happy and not always soft-spoken - and kept the buckets of chicken and other delights coming. If I weren't impressed enough with the excellent service (in the face of a large, loud party), holy snap, the food. EXCELLENT fried chicken. SO good. And a simple, satisfying menu with homey sides like grilled potatoes and corn bread (sorry, no mac and cheese). Another star for the comprehensive beer selection and specialty cocktails. If parking wasn't so hard to get (the classic Austin complaint), I would pop in here regularly for a beer and some chicken. I've never been a big fried chicken fan but my dad was in town and I really wanted mashed potatoes so somehow we settled on Lucy's. It's such an Austiny type place and I'd heard about it ever since moving here, so I was excited to try! However, I don't think it made enough of an impression for me to come back. Juicy Lucy (watermelon frozen marg) - it was pretty bland. I was really surprised and bummed because it was the thing I was most excited for, haha. Fried deviled eggs - fun concept and they were pretty good but I probably wouldn't order again Steak and Mashed Potatoes - it was Tuesday which is steak night so this is what I settled on because it came with mashed potatoes. I got it rare. It was kind of bland sadly .... not very well seasoned at all. I did like the mashed potatoes though! It was funny because she brought me the holandaise and gravy on the side so I was just dipping everything and I think it would be somehow better if those already poured on the meal. My dad got fried chicken (not sure the details on which) and he found them to be kind of boring.... which is a bummer for a chicken place. The saving grace for me was the smore's pie!! I eat here every time I come to Austin. The Caesar chicken salad is bomb. I was looking forward to eating at Lucy's for literally days and was extremely disappointed. I ordered my food and a beer and was told I could not purchase a beer because my ID is expired. I am 35 and clearly do not look under 21. I havent been carded in years and never have I been declined service because of an expired ID. I was shocked. I left because of the ridiculous service and went somewhere else on South Congress. Even if I go through the hassle of going in person to get an updated ID, I probably won't return again. We always sit at the bar, and try to get Olivia. She is nice, prompt, and polite. We also always get the raw oysters, which are our favorite in Austin for the price and quality. $14 for a dozen. Other things there seem pricey (and is of course all fried) so we pretty much stick to that or the chili. We would recommend the chili and the nachos though too. Their chicken is a combination of crispy, flavorful and juicy! If you order a Bucket o' Chicken or a basket it will definitely be enough to share. You can't stop by without picking one of their southern inspired sides, especially their collard greens which were seasoned to perfection. The ambiance is casual with outdoor seating. After driving by and being drawn in by the awesome exterior I popped into Lucy's for a late lunch. How disappointing! Not only did I have to wait 20+ minutes for my to go order when the restaurant was practically empty but when I finally did get my food it wasnt good. I got the deep fried deviled eggs because I mean - how good do those sound? Unfortunately, they just didn't live up to how great the sounded. They were bland and tasted like nothing and the only redeeming factor was that there was a spicy sauce that accompanied them. I also got the fried chicken skin chicken salad sandwich. Read about Lucy's in Austin Monthly and made immediate plans to go with my hubz the next day. We reviewed the menu and decided what we wanted to order beforehand: deep fried deviled eggs; Pearl beer grilled chicken; and Mexican Coke sweet potatoes. I also decided to order the "Chicken Lips" drink with vodka, a raw oyster, tomato juice, hot sauce, and fried chicken crumbles on the rim. Our expectations were very high, and somehow, Lucy's exceeded those expectations. The deviled eggs were perfection. There were lovely deviled eggs made lovelier with fried chicken breading. The grilled chicken was great to share as it was plated as two quarter pieces of chicken, smothered in Pearl beer gravy. The Mexican Coke sweet potatoes were divine as well. We were happily surprised to be able to taste the Pearl beer in the gravy and Mexican Coke in the sweet potatoes. It's not a gimmick; both beverages enhanced the flavors in their respective dishes. The Chicken Lips drink was dangerously good. Like, I could see myself downing a half-dozen of those puppies. It was a generous shooter and I savored every second of drinking it. Even though we shared everything, we had sweet potatoes left over and no possible room for dessert. The pie did look big and beautiful. Just wasn't in the cards this time. I was so upset I called the manager and she was nice enough to refund my order and here is where she messed up... she said MOST PEOPLE ASK TO HAVE THEIR CHICKEN FRIED FRESH, and that usually takes 20-30 minutes. ummmm if you are an institution that specializes in fried chicken, you should pride yourself in serving fresh chicken even if it means that your patrons will have to wait. I'm not from Texas, so I love the fact that everything comes with pickles and/or Jalapenos down here. I can really get behind that. Chicken was great. It was hot, crispy, and juicy. I didn't notice anything unusual about the seasoning, other than it was properly salted, so thumbs up for the "less is more" approach. The sides were for the most part, also great. Fried deviled eggs, crispy fries, stewed okra, all fantastic. The mashed potatoes were underwhelming, but the biscuits with tequila butter more than made up for it. I was so excited to try the famous Lucy's Fried Chicken and Waffles I've heard so many people rave about. I live about 10 minutes from them and ordered with Favor. By the time I got it, my food was completely cold. Okay fine, I ordered to-go, I don't expect it to be piping hot like it would be fresh out of the kitchen. But then, after warming it up, when I bit into my food, I spit it right back out. The waffle was hard as a rock and the chicken was totally dry and mostly batter. Sorely disappointed by my food that I threw away after the 3 bites I took just because I was starving, I decided to try the banana pudding with vanilla wafers to try to salvage this disappointing meal. To my dismay, there were no wafers, just some crumbles at the top. I honestly don't know why people love this place so much. Since this was my first time ordering from them, I don't know for sure whether the food would've been better had I eaten it there, or if it or if it's because they're slammed due to Covid or if the food just sucks in general, but as bad as literally everything I ordered was, I don't think I'll be back. I ordered the fried chicken with mac & cheese and decided to throw some fried livers in there. Chicken - to be honest a bit bland, I expect a place like this to have some sort of a signature seasoning blend that makes the chicken really pop but came out a bit underwhelming. Mac & Cheese - bland as well, but it was nice and creamy which is a good bonus. Fried Livers- One of the better fried livers I've had, nice and crispy. Overall - By all means if you haven't tried this place, try it. Regardless of my review it is still worth a shot but in my opinion there are better places here in Austin for some good fried chicken. read more

Friends and i shared a boat load of stuff, fried chicken basket, chicken gizzards, livers, cole slaw, corn bread muffins, fries, wings, diablo oysters, baked potato, chili, and some potato salad. So the OK stuff out of the way would probably be the wings, and chili. Like they aren't bad or anything, just OK, the chili comes with a lot of stuff, but the chili just tasted like whatevers honestly, nothing to really remember it by. The wings were pretty salty. All the other stuff that I listed earlier were really good though, good batter, moist chicken, the diablo oysters were really spicy, but super delicious.
