Visited M Sushi for a special occasion and had an absolutely phenomenal experience. From the moment we arrived, service and the ambiance was incredible. We decided to order the Nigiri Omakase. The dishes were presented beautifully and explained very well by our server. The total experience took about 1-1.5 hours, but honestly didn't feel that long. We were instructed that the chefs recommended eating each piece with our hands (minus the soups), so we did just that. Our dishes came relatively fast with enough time in between to discuss each piece/fangirl over how delicious everything was. We were presented so many kinds of delicious, fresh fish I honestly don't remember what each one was. The piece I will always remember is the fatty tuna (4th picture, 3rd piece from left to right) -- the moment I put it in my mouth, it literally melted. No chewing required (except for the rice, obviously). The rice used was also unique from other M-Sushi locations, so we were told, because of the special type of vinegar used to season the rice. Each bite was different and filled with a level of umami I have never really tasted before. Going into this omakase, I expected to finish and not be full. Boy, was I wrong. After finishing, I was stuffed to the brim and had no room for any other food. The whole experience from start to end was quite literally one of the best dining experiences I have ever had. Cannot recommend the Fenton location of M-Sushi enough. read more

OMG the quality and freshness of the fish for the nigiri Omakase was just mind blowing. I also loved the rice - they write about it in the menu about the uniqueness of the rice they chose. I will continue to say that MSushi (Durham or Cary) has the best sushi in town. The menu is still on the limited side as they are slowly working their way to a full menu. Wow. Definitely different vibes than the Durham location- this Fenton, Cary location is .. sexy? It's dark and moody and enticing. And the sushi is unmatched. How did they come up with the flavor combos? Like a sweet yuzu foam with my sushi? I had the omakase and it was the perfect amount to leave room for dessert after. I love that the servers seem to be keeping an eye on you to bring out the next dish at the perfect time. It was an *experience* I would recommend going on a weeknight to enjoy shopping at Fenton after dinner haha. read more

We came for my birthday dinner. The vibe is dark, and luxurious but still very friendly. It was busy on Friday night and reservations were recommended as the meal courses can last to around 2 hours. About the food, we ordered the sushi courses. Everything.was.so.good! Don't think these tiny sushi won't make you full. We was struggling having our dessert because we were that full. Lastly, you don't have to worry about the freshness. The fish as you can see in the pics were clear, crunchy fresh, sweet, balanced flavor. Total bill for us was around $350 for 2. This location was open for lunch on a Saturday while the Durham location was not. The restaurant was about half full and we sat at the sushi counter. Our server was nice but the food took a long time to come out. As always, the fish is fresh and high quality. Last time I was shocked by how generous the rolls were. This time they were more average in portion, maybe because we ordered different ones. The truffle tuna roll was good, though the truffle flavor is slight. I didn't love the rainbow roll because it had a mango(?) sauce that really threw me off. It was sweet and sour but also had a slightly gritty texture as mangos do. I wasn't expecting that, but maybe you'd like it if you usually like mangoes in sushi. read more

Last minute pop in for lunch. Ordered the sushi Combo that included the trout and avocado roll and miso soup. If anyone ever pays attention to sushi rice, they'll notice their rice was really good. We pulled up to the restaurant and had no idea where it was. It kind of resembles a speak easy entrance. So, in case you don't know- it is on the corner and there is a large black door and a small sign. One Side goes to the kitchen and the other side is the sushi part. I absolutely loved the atmosphere. It was really trendy, and amazing for a date. The servers (other than Andrew) were not friendly. Our server was almost to the point of being rude. Nobody spoke and it made it very uncomfortable. The miso soup came out after the rolls and the drinks took a really long time. Service was very slow. I want to shout out Andrew again, who was not our server, but came over to greet us and talk. The menu is pricey and has some really great rolls. We started with the shrimp toast which has a wonderful dipping sauce. It was a really good small plate. My seaweed salad was tons of lettuce with a very bland ginger dressing under the seaweed salad. The tuna tartare was excellent but very overpriced for such a small amount. It was more of just tuna than tartare. The M roll and rainbow roll were very good. I really loved the atmosphere, but due to the service and high price of things that shouldn't have been, I cannot give this restaurant more than 3 stars. I had much bigger hopes. I would absolutely love to try the omakase menu, though. read more

I tried the Cary location because it's close to home. Cary location 3stars, Durham location 5stars. Cary won't let you get Omakse unless the whole table does. In addition, the menu is just not as good. The bento boxes are very limited at Cary M sushi. Basically, Cary location is trying to get a halo effect from the Durham location, and it's just not close. read more

Was so excited to hear that M Sushi will be at Fenton & couldn't wait to try it since we've had amazing meals at the Durham location. This location is much smaller than Durham so seating was extremely tight. There was very little space between the seating at the sushi bar and the tables. This makes it even more of a challenge with servers bring out food and people walking to their tables or the restrooms. I was afraid for our server as he was trying to balance the flaming hot shabu shabu broth almost over my husband's head while people were navigating around him to get to the restroom. My husband was bumped multiple times as people ventured to & from the restrooms in the back. Service was excellent and very attentive. Our server was constantly on the ball ensuring that everything and everyone was well cared for. Food-wise, it fell short of expectations. Prices were extremely high for the overall quality especially for the sushi. The unagi maki just wasn't good. Instead of tasting the delicate flavor of the eel, all one tasted was the soy glaze and the overpowering fried shallots that tasted like they came from a can at an Asian grocery. The kaluga caviar was not the quality that I expected for $20 per piece. It was overly salty and didn't have the briny quality that good quality caviar has. We did however enjoy the lobster shabu shabu, kampachi, chutoro and scallop nigiri. Overall the experience was meh...& not sure if we'll return when there are other options out there. read more

Excellent food for an anniversary dinner. Make sure to reserve ahead even for weekdays. We arrived on time and still had to wait 15-20 mins beyond our reservation time to be seated. This annoyed me so I docked one star. We liked the wagyu beef appetizer the best. Sashimi was excellent, and we ordered a variety of tuna, shrimp and yellowtail options. Our waiter was knowledgeable and prompt which we appreciated because we were just there for the food. We had our order ready to go within five minutes of sitting down and he got right on it. Dessert was a cool item: coconut sorbet in the coconut shell. Not too sweet with crunchy cacao nibs! Caveat: Ambience was loud and a bit cramped, not a place for a quiet, intimate dinner. It was hard to converse due to closely spaced tables. read more

I'm not sure what the hype is. I was expecting to see batman first of all. Why am I dining in a cave? This is Cary, not Gotham City. And it isn't just the unpleasant aesthetics. Are there any Japanese people who work in the establishment? Or even dine at M Sushi? I certainly did not see any, and yes, it is not a good sign. It's just another wannabe, pretentious overpriced restaurant that lacks freshness and flavor. Just stop trying to be New York or San Francisco (which, to me, has the best sushi besides Japan itself, by the way). Just....stop. I was told that if you want their real Wasabi, it's a $14 upcharge. Now, I'm not claiming that's true, but if it is, get over yourselves and go to Japan (or San Francisco) and you'll understand what I'm saying 100%. Sigh. How disappointing. An expensive disappointment; wish we'd gone to the Durham M Sushi instead. They tried something different at this location: strict traditional Japanese sushi bar. We ordered Omakase (whole table, as required) and got some very traditional cudo, nigiri, miso soup, and a tiny tuna handroll. Ingredients were excellent, but it was overall underwhelming. None of the creativity of the Durham location's omakaze. More disappointing was the atmosphere. It's cramped inside, and all the hard surfaces mean it's LOUD...like averaging 85+db, according to my phone. So while the service was attentive, we simply could not hear what the server was saying. Finally, I have to mention the bathrooms--they were horrendous. Overflowing trash cans and water (I hope) splattered everywhere. Out of toilet paper in one, out of paper towels in another. Not at all what I was expecting for $450. Won't be back. read more

I have to go all the way for this one, the food was different in a very good way, the seafood they use was so tender it melted my taste buds! Our waitress Brianna was very informative while we ordered helping us navigate the menu! It's on the pricy side but worth it! The place was packed for a Sunday night all tables full and the beautiful bar seemed packed. The ambience was dark windows closed but still nice, no one can see in or out. My wife and I were visiting from Austin, TX again as my sis and parents moved here 5+ years ago from Seattle. We have yet to find a good sushi place in the tri-city area, but we can now say that we have. My wife, Michiko, is half Japanese and we both travel outside the U.S. quite a bit, so we do prefer more authentic flavors eating out. We both ordered the omakase at the bar (we squeezed in Tues. night with no reservation right at 5pm when they opened, but know they are pretty much booked so I'd get reservations). We both had macha green tea, asahi, and sake and our server Jane was awesome checking in with us regularly while we were served 1 plate at a time from the chef across the bar using the fresh wasabi available that's always worth the upgrade everywhere. All fresh and tasty--I didn't take pics of everything--trust me when I say my wife and I were full by the end--we both were simply relieved to find a place that met our expectations--only place in Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, RTP, Cary to do so. 5 stars. They did it again!!! We sat at the sushi bar and were fortunate enough to talk with owner Michael Lee. He explained that , although this is an M Sushi there are some very intentional changes that have been made compared to it's sister restaurant. Mike explained the rice is a major change and one of their most important ingredients. They source theirs from Japan via NYC where it is milled and then sent to Cary. Another major change is the fish they offer here, and they were not kidding. Just look at those photos!! We got the Omakase and everything was explained eloquently and the service was top notch. We even got a little crash course on the wine! BTW get the White Rioja!! It's made in Spain by a Japanese wine maker and designed with it specifically being paired with sushi. I had 3 glasses. I'm going to be a regular here and can't wait till the Test Kitchen side is open! Book a resi, sit at the sushi bar, and enjoy the best sushi in the state. read more
