My mom stopped here as she saw people in the restaurant eating GOOD when she looked in. Little did we know we found the cutest gem. I went to Mabu Cafe for a quick lunch, and had a good time. The place itself is very decorated with lots of lights and color. The table is even decorated with mahjong tiles! Service is efficient and swift, we placed our order and waited about 10-15 minutes before it came. We got Hong Kong Milk Tea, Baked Pork Chop on Rice, and Toast. Mabu is such a cute restaurant serving comfort food with a fun aesthetic. My friends introduced me to this place recently and I came back with my husband a week later. There was so much on the menu I wanted to try. Items such as their milk tea (the teddy bear is so adorable!), beef and scrambled eggs with truffle, and strawberry milky cream French toast were good, but my personal favorites were the tom yum seafood instant noodle soup and fried tentacles. Very cute place! I love the decoration. There are dominoes or mah-jong tiles underneath the glass tables, and the bathroom door is a fridge door. I was drawn to the teddy bear dessert dish and the bunny dish I've seen online. The bears in a bathtub dish was made of jellies, red bean, and mochi. The actual bear was made out of ice. It was disappointing that we couldn't eat the bear, but it was very cute. The bunnies were also very cute, but I think lacked flavor. Disappointedly, I didn't love this place like I thought I would. The upside was that we didn't have to wait in line, which was a common sight when the restaurant first opened, to try out the eatery. They have space upstairs and in the basement, and my party was seated downstairs. I loved all the vintage HK decor and the mahjong tables, as well as the inventive menu items. However, I think that's where it ends. The food -- the most important part of any restaurant -- was mid. It didn't necessarily taste bad, but I wouldn't go back for mediocrity. Satay beef and sunny egg on instant noodle (4/5) - Overall, this was a decent dish but the satay flavor was subtle; it would've been better with stronger flavor Baked cheese with tomato sauce beef on spaghetti (3/5) - I thought this would be the classic HK baked dish of minced meat with tomato sauce, but the meat was sliced meat. I didn't expect that but at least the meat was a good texture. The rest of the dish was not super saucy or cheesy. If you like things light, then this might be up your alley. Tom Yum Goong Seafood Instant Noodle Soup (4/5) - The flavor was pretty good, and the setup was creative. It's kind of funny that you have to scoop all the noodles back into the cup to eat though. Durian coconut chicken mini pot with instant noodle (2/5) - The durian is really small like the size of a golf ball. I'm not sure if it's cause it disintegrated in the hot broth. But the flavor of the chicken and broth was not enjoyable. Vanilla ice cream in pineapple bun (3/5) - This tasted better than Japan's famous melon pan ice cream to me. However, the pineapple bun looked like it was made in-house and ranked lower than most Chinese bakeries. Also, the worker thought we ordered the pineapple bun with butter, but we clearly said the right number for this dish. There was some back and forth until the worker offered to swap out the butter for ice cream instead. When we ordered this, we also asked for the dish to be served toward the end of our meal because of the ice cream, and the worker agreed to it and did. So I'm not sure why there was confusion with what was actually ordered. Soybean milky cream french toast (3/5) - Interesting flavor but underwhelming. It was basically french toast with a pool of condensed milk in the middle and soybean powder spread all over. The HK classic of peanut butter condensed milk french toast is better. I finally had a chance to visit this cafe. There are steep steps to go down so thank goodness I didn't bring the baby or a stroller with me today. I did see they have a first floor but I'm gonna guess the main area is the basement? I feel like the first floor can be opened for wheelchair patrons. Well, walk down the steps carefully. There is an interesting door by the basement entrance which was the bathroom. It transports you back to the 80s, I loved the posters they hung up inside. Two entrances - the one street level, and the flight of stairs to the right that take you to the basement. Pay with cash for a small discount. Large, laminated menus are covered with saturated photos of items and adorable illustrations that beckon you to order them. This menu aligns to my dispassion for reading (jk), and my favorite type way of ordering, pointing and saying "this". We got: Satay beef with scrambled eggs over rice - best entree we ordered. The beef was quite tender and the sauce was delectable. Thankful for the steamed broccoli as my only veggie source from this entire meal. HK Style Rice Noodles Rolls w special sauce - disclaimer, the sauce was indeed special and carried the dish. It was a smooth soy + peanut sauce that hits drastic notes of sweet and salty. Rice rolls were very tender, but overall, a simple, but solid dish. Beef with black truffle over rice - granted, this was the furthest item from me, so I only got one bite. It was ok, and I personally preferred the satay beef for the sweet and salty contrast, vs this dish being only salty. Baked spaghetti - as expected, a bit on the greasier side. Unlikely to order again. Strawberry cream milk french toast - exactly as pictured: pale pink cream doused two slices of french toast. Artificial strawberry flavor for sureeee, but sometimes I need to keep my body on edge with some Red 40. Coconut milk with grass jelly, sago, and taro ball (plus the teddy bear in the bathtub): cute for sure, but flavor was not necessarily there...but still cute nonetheless. This was brought early in our meal, so Mr. Bear was already melted away by the time we got to him. Ask for this to be brought towards the end of your meal if you want an intact dessert. Overall, fun and eclectic spot that goes above and beyond in terms of flair, presentation, and plating. A cute spot that I appreciate even in my high school and meal college budget days. The prices for dishes here were inexpensive that you can't beat. They even have cute drinks that you expect in a classic HK style place or bubble tea shop - bear shaped goods. Food isn't fancy but it hits the spot if you want a quick service snackish dishes. My boyfriend and I wanted to recapture our childhood Asian comfort dishes and this place did the trick without breaking your wallet. I will deduct one star because of the cleanliness of one particular area in the restaurant near the heater/ Air conditioner. The dining area here had a pungent seafood smell and flies were floating around here that made me question the seating's cleanliness. Onto the food: appetizers or bites to share range from curry fish balls, rice rolls of a few varieties, Hong Kong style toasts (think condensed milk or strawberry), and even egg sandwiches. The entrees are plentiful: ramen, rice dishes, bread bowls and egg platters. Too many to name but if you know HK style cafes, they likely serve it. My party of four really enjoyed the black truffle scrambled eggs with beef over rice, the plain rice rolls with the peanut/sweet dipping sauce on the side, curry fish balls and the beef ramen. My guilty pleasure was ordering the breakfast platter - two fried eggs (sunny up), paired with garlic toast, two hot dogs, and two slices of spam. OMG, so much food...we were so stuffed. A nice twist on the traditional curry fish balls, but with crispy, fried squid instead--and it works - Butter Pineapple Bun: Great taste but not enough butter - Satay Beef Rice Noodle Soup: The satay sauce was bland, and I'm annoyed they didn't offer other noodle options like macaroni to go with this. A real CCT spot would've had that. - Shredded Pork with Preserved Vegetable Rice Noodle Soup: I never like the Canto take on this Shanghainese dish, and Mabu's was no exception. Honestly even the menu was extremely cute which I appreciate. I thought the garlic flavors were very evident throughout and coated very nicely over the fried chicken which was a surprise. I know some people think there's too much carbs, but I thought the meat to rice ratio was great and it left me very full. - Ovaltine Condensed Milk French Toast - I didn't expect for them to cut a hole in the french toast dish and put what seemingly tastes like chocolate milk in there. What the hell did I just experience? No seriously. I was lured down some stairs by a giant green neon arrow to another realm where the menu was a fascinating reinterpretation of American classics mixed with Hong Kong street food. I'm still mystified by the whole experience but at the same time I'm wanting more. The decor is bold, colorful and intriguing... to get to the bathroom you go in through a refrigerator. Food is served super fast by friendly staff and I have to say the French toasts are delicious. This is in no way my favorite restaurant in Chinatown, but I will be back. Absolutely amazing, loved the food, the service, everything, if i had the chance to come back,i would definitely come back. I recommend coming here to try it out. Its cheap (for me) and serves large portions. The interior is sooo cute! I love how it looks and they even made the bathroom door look like a fridge! How creative! 5 star! read more

I have been wanting to come here ever since it opened, mainly because of the cute teddy bear milk tea. I've tried coming here a couple times when it first opened, but there was always a long wait. This time, we walked right in and got seated in their downstairs area. Their decor is very cute and took me back to Hong Kong. The mahjong table and posters on the wall were all very nostalgic. The food was average, nothing very special compared to other Hong Kong foods I've had. In comparison to other places like Kong Shik Tong, it is just not as good. Their noodles were on the drier side to me and didn't have as much flavor as I had wanted. Definitely come to this restaurant if you want to get a feel of HK, but if you want to go for the food, I'd suggest exploring other options in Chinatown! read more
