Nothing too memorable about Macau Cafe- the food was good, but not somewhere I'd go back to. We had frog legs- tastes like a chicken that took a swim in the ocean. Another dish we had was being kept warm by a flame underneath. The smell of the gas was a unique addition to our eating experience. I have to admit, I was extremely disappointed by this place. My family came here, hoping to eat some good old Hong Kong-style cuisine. I am pretty sure my mom's friend has been here before and said that the food was good. So we decided to come here today. At least they were coming back to us asking what we wanted to order so that was good. We decided to order fish curry, baked chicken with tomato sauce, chow mein, and a cup of hot milk tea. They ran out of chicken so we ended up getting baked pork chop with tomato sauce. Twenty minutes later, still no food or drinks. It has also been 30 minutes and by then the restaurant was over halfway full. I noticed how the people who arrived after us already got the food so we thought that was pretty stupid. Eventually, the curry came first. I was pretty disappointed by the fact that they served the curry already on top of the rice. I didn't like that because the rice would be getting soggy with the curry being on top. The food wasn't even hot and the rice was pretty dry and seemed slightly undercooked. I rank it a solid 7.5/10 because the sauce was good, the potatoes were decent but the rice was so bad and I also don't like fish. Then like ten minutes later after we finished the curry, the baked pork chop came. It was pretty good, I gave it a 7.5/10 but I was disappointed by the amount of sauce on it. I also don't know if the pork chop was any good because I didn't eat it. Then after awhile, we were still waiting on the chow mein. it has been like at least 45 minutes of being in the restaurant. We were about to cancel the order and when a waitress comes nearby my mom asks her where is it and they are like OH HOLD ON A SECOND and then brings out the chow mein. The chow mein tasted pretty good but I found it weird how there was chicken there but no chicken for the bake with tomato sauce. We were full by then and we ended up taking it home. I decided to go to the bathroom. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Apparently you have to exit out the back of the restaurant and walk down to a hallway to get to the bathroom which I found really weird and sketchy.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I walked into the girls bathroom and I was absolutely creeped out. I DoorDash for some Crispy pig knuckles and OMG! It was the best decision ever! The pork knuckles were crispy on the outside and tender & gooey from the inside. I had it with traditional Lao sticky rice and my homemade chili sauce, that was the highlight of my moment. It's a must try. read more

I've been here so many times, but I really don't like this restaurant 1) because it's dirty, and 2) I never enjoy the food my wife orders here. The last time I came, this restaurant was quite dirty. Our plates were greasy and caked with water/oil stains. The utensils were a bit sticky. The restroom was in poor condition and needed to be cleaned. There was also a foul, trash smell in the back of the restaurant. Service was slightly slow this time, but it's usually fast. The other issue is that I absolutely hate the food here. Much of that fault lies with the fact that my wife uses this restaurant to order the fattiest, greasiest Chinese/Asian foods, and their smell and taste remind me of warm, curdled milk. Almost everything here tastes like a greasy/fattening version of its equivalent mainland Chinese dish. But then, that's just their style. read more

I give this place 3.5 stars.. It's a nice, cute little hole in the wall. According to my Chinese friends, they say that this is one of the better restaurants in Sacramento for Chinese food for its quality, authenticity, and selection. The overall food was good. But would really stood out to me was their dumplings. It was freaking awesome!! I've tried quite a few variation and I must say that their dumplings really put a smile on my face. I also like their XO turnip... something like that. It was deliciously good, mouth watering, and spicy. Their spinach dish was cool. It was simple with a little flavor. Not a bad spot. Heard mixed reviews about service and speediness of the food being prepared and delivered to the table. I will say this is the only place in Sacramento that can actually make decent smooth scrambled egg with either shrimp or beef over rice (waat dahn ngao yuk fahn) the egg is like gravy and it is just the perfect r flavoring doe your pallet if you want something savory and yummy. Portions are a bit small...least for me because I'm a big guy. My girlfriend usually orders the egg plant with fish filets over rice (yuu herng keh ji yuu peen fahn). This dish is very savory as well. Honestly this would be my second favorite dish here and a close third would be a white porridge jook with yummy fish chunks and ginger. Best remedy option if you're sick or can't take much solid foods. They have a high tea (happy hour) between 3-6 I think. Sadly I can never make it on time but will most of the time order the salt and pepper tofu cubes. Tasty bites of salty,spicy,crunchy goodness. The service here has been both good and bad. Sometimes they are quick and friendly. Other times they are not so speedy and friendly. And your food will come late. And you have to go up sometimes and ask for your check. But I think these couple bad traits don't out weigh the yummy foods and other delectable treats litered around the shop in picture form and in the menus. They are all delicious but only Salt and pepper squid, its flour layers are too thick, you can take the flour rather the squid inside. Their portion are big enough to serve 2 ppls for each. Drink: Hot milk tea- very authentic taste of HK style. Highly recommend it. Its come with Condensed milk. if you are looking for Evaporated one, you have to tell. Service: Its meet our standard. OK, here's my take on Macau Cafe. * I was blown away by the size of their menu. LOTS of dishes available. * The types of dishes are not common in newer Chinese restaurants * These are mostly old-school dishes circa 1950s-60s-ish * Food was good, very mild, more like Cantonese style, not spicy * Prices were reasonable * Generous portions. Last thoughts: This wouldn't be my first choice. It's not my style of food. I prefer a little more modern version of Chinese food that isn't as heavy. I like cleaner flavors and lighter sauces. NOT saying the food is bad, it's not what I prefer. In a pinch, or if I wanted some of the things that are the Chinese version of comfort food, I would go here. Looks like the congee is authentic, hell, it all looks authentic...authentically like what you would find in a 1960s Chinese restaurant but without the Chop Suey. I'll come back and try the interesting dishes you don't often find outside of S.F's Chinatown like the sizzling clay pots, or the salted fish and chicken fried rice...Maybe the Brisket and tendon beef stew. read more

I seriously can't believe my mom and I just found this place! This is actually a chinese food spot where all ingredients are fresh! Taste absolutely delicious, no excessive amount of salt to cover up, overall great taste. It is a bit of a small place so I do recommend coming early or prepare to wait. The plates are big and look way better than they do in the pictures. I love the pictures on the menu we ordered like 5 things and it came out to 41 which is great price. My only complaints are that it opens so late (should not have the word cafe in their store name if they are going to open at 11.) and the waiters dont check up on you after they drop their food so good luck with your one napkin. Definitely give this place a try! My mom and I have tried chinese food from all over the place and she's a chinese native and she agreed this place was great. read more

Finally found a decent HK cafe in Sacramento. I've been coming here a lot ever since my friend told me about this place. It's your typical Chinese restaurant where the food is authentic and delicious, but the service isn't so great. I've noticed that their service is slightly better when I speak Mandarin to them (probably even better if you speak Cantonese), but not so great when I speak English. Think garlic noodles minus the garlic with lobster. Good value dish and recommended. fried shrimp and egg plant ($9) probably the least favorite dish of the night. Theres also lots of deep fried pepper and garlic to go along with the dish. Felt pretty gross after eating a couple pieces of this. Wouldn't recommend this. deep fried pork knuckle ($10) deep fried lightly salted flavored pork that was very tender. Good recommended appetizer. Beef with green beans ($9) there was a lot more beef than I imagined compared to the amount of beans and the beef was very tender and cooked to perfection without being over cooked and having a slight pink to it. This place serves good Hong Kong dishes. I've come here a couple of times and always ordered their scallion chicken - it's a good dish to enjoy over lunch. During my last visit here with my hubby; they forgot to bring out his entree. Although they were super busy with a line tailing out the door, that is no excuse to forget a patron's food! I stumbled on this place after Mentoring someone. I read some of the reviews and became intrigued when some mentioned Macau street food. I ordered a dish I became familiar with while I worked in San Jose for over 15 years. I ordered scrambled eggs with shrimp over chow fun noodles, wet (in gravy). The chow fun had a nice seared char taste indicative of a very hot wok, which is what you want when cooking this dish. The shrimp were cooked nicely, not overcooked. There weren't enough eggs in this dish. I'm use to more eggs. It's almost as if the gravy took the place of the lack of eggs. But the dish was still good. It could have been a five star experience if the right amount of eggs were used. I didn't taste the eggs which was unusual for this dish. The server was very nice and always had a smile on her face. BBQ pork, deep fried squid, Chinese broccoli, lotus root pancake. The bbq pork was a little fatty...which is awesome! Always tasty with fat...and you eat it together with rice...even better! The deep fried squid was crunchy but a little salty...had to eat it with rice. And again...made it better! Oh if you get it...I suggest you put the chopped garlic and pepper in your rice and eat together ! Broccoli had a nice crunch...flavorful like how vegetable suppose to taste. Not old...no dryness to it...very green! Lotus root pancake was good...first time I had it here. Would definitely order these plates again if/when I go back. I don't even know how to rate this restaurant as I am really congested and have lost my sense of smell and taste for like almost a week now :( quality of life really sucks now since I love food to death. I did taste the congee just a bit. I asked my mom what she thought of the food and she said it was good. She really liked the Cha siew. It came our honey glazed with a rim of fat layer. To me, it was still a little fatty, but my mom said it actually wasn't. The congee had too little thousand year old egg and didn't even have pork. I was disappointed. I love congees where they put a lot of thousand year old eggs. We got the beef chow fun and the color was a little lacking, but my mom said it tasted okay. I also ordered the lemon ginger drink and boy was it spicy. I'll pass on this next time. I think overall, it was okay. I mean, I would come back to try other things which is why I rated a 4. This is my grandparents favorite restaurant. The service is friendly and has gotten better over the years. Hong Kong style dishes. My favorite dish is the baked chicken or pork. The sauce is sweet and reminds me of spagetti-o's. The have fresh watermelon juice. the soup filled dumplings, I also like the Lobster Efu noodles the texture is quiet pleasing and the sauce is rich. Macau cafe is what I call is an authentic restaurant. i.e. not Americanised / Westernised. It had a lot of different combinations of items such as Chinese sausage and spare rib rice casserole, braised fish and tofu in a clay pot. The service and quickness of order was good. We ordered the crispy pig knuckle, beef brisket and tendons and singapore style pan fried rice noodles. THe taste was good but the portion size was a tad small however the cost was cheap. I noticed they had frog meat with vegetables on the menu, usually only authentic Chinese restaurants have frog, I wonder if they serves snails? Took my food To Go. Ordered Lemon Chicken. Like I said took my To Go Order back to work. When I sat and began eating, the Lemon Chicken was actually made with Lime ! ? ! I was sooo disappointed, I have had this before and it was made with Lemon, hence 'Lemon' Chicken. So I took it back after work, told them they didn't make my order right. All she could do was hold up a Lime and say this? I couldn't communicate that it was a Lime not a Lemon. She would not budge, I was upset, and left without any replacement or compensation. Some of my recommendations here is the . Lobster eeeee mein - a plate full of noodles with a big whole lobster on top. Its presentation will wow you. Def picture worthy. The taste is great as well, i do like to spice it up with the table red chili they offer on each table. The lobster is full of flavor with ginger and scallions. . Happy hour is pretty amazing. . Happy hour is not your normal hh here. Its more traditonal hk style hh. Dishes they offer for hh is more like a meal than small bites and feels more authentic as well. Some highlights on the hh menu is the combination congee also known as porridge. Out of most asian places i have tried in sac this is my favorite porridge here. The texture and flavor and all the good things they put inside is great. I do love the variety of seafood and the peanuts on top of this combo porridge. Must try if you never try before. . Another favorite from the hh menu is the xo sauce turnip cake. So they pam fried the turnip cake on both sides to be brown then they throw it in the wok to mix it with xo sauce which is dry shrimp and scallop bits with a little bit of chili to give it flavor. This dish is so ono! . They also have more and more, but they do offer authentic chicken vermecelli noodles soup too. Its like a chicken noodles version of hk style instead. . Lots of great family style dinners here like ordering a big table of food on a round lazy susan to spin and enjoy. They also offer american chinese food as well. If you like seafood, they do know how to cook up some seafood. . One thing i dislike is service. They are slow or always hiding in the back til you flag them down. They sometimes pretend they dont see you and etc. Just gotta sit in the front and avoid the booths in the back otherwise it takes even longer than it is already. . Overall this place is great and i enjoy coming here with fam. Oh forgot to mention the amazing steam ousters with black bean sauce and scallions is another favorite dish here.
