There's something going on here. I see tons of Chinese people eating here (sometimes it's packed!) and it always smells delicious. On more than one occasion I've gone to Sprouts to pick up some ingredients to make dinner and have just said "screw it," and gone to Macau instead. But every time I go, I leave disappointed. The food is just not good. Maybe there are a selection of dishes that are really good and I'm just getting unlucky and ordering only the bad ones. That's definitely possible, and I know there's definitely a secret menu written only in Chinese that probably has all the good stuff. Really though, everything I've ordered has been mediocre to BAD. The house chow fun was beyond greasy and it had some chunks of fish in it that tasted like dirty water. The lemon chicken was sickeningly sweet and gloopy and the breading was soft and mealy (ok, this may be my fault for ordering lemon chicken). The fried squid was very oily, chewy and absolutely flavorless. Their hot and sour soup is not so bad though. Based on other people's reviews, I might return if I'm sick and need some wonton soup. Service is good and restaurant is clean. Macau offers a variety of dishes and everything we had was pretty good. Yelp reviewers recommend the Lobster Noodles, but in my opinion, that was just mediocre. The lobster pieces are huge, but I found the dish a bit bland. On the more noteworthy side, my favorite dishes were the honey barbecue pork and the Japanese tofu! Honey BBQ Pork was tender, easy on the teeth, and sweet. Every piece melts in your mouth and is bursting with flavor--no sauce needed. The Japanese tofu is a tie with the honey BBQ pork. What I loved about this dish was the not only the excellent taste, but the simplicity of the ingredients and how it was presented. This comes out on a hot plate. The bottom of the plate is covered with a thin omelette and topped with tofu and shrimp. The tofu was lightly fried and had a great soft texture. I recommend checking out Macau Cafe if you can. The food has always been consistently good, but lately their service has been awful. We went there a few days ago and the waitress honestly ignored us. I had to flag her down just to get her to refill our waters. We order a family style dinner, and she didn't even bring out the soup first which is pretty standard. She never refilled our tea, and while we were ordering she was rushing us even though they weren't busy. this is a welcome addition to the sacto chinese restaurant scene (said by an outsider who grew up in LA and now lives in the bay area and who only is in the area a couple times a year to visit the family). my parents like this place because they claim they have excellent lobster. we had standard lunch fare: wonton, lobster yee mein, siu long bao (sp?), and a random thing that looked like wonton but was filled with some sort of vegetable (bleh; but my parents liked it). all of the dishes were quite good. the wonton were huge and the lobster and noodles were excellent. the siu lung bao were also good for being a place that doesn't specialize in the dumplings. the only drawback was that in both the wonton and the siu lung bao there was some gristle from one of the ingredients (i'm assuming it was chicken). like Alice C. said, beware the bathroom hallway. we sat at a table by there and every time someone went to/from the bathroom, you get a hint of seafood and back alley. bonuses: the food came out pretty quickly and the walls are a makeshift picture menu for those of us who can't read chinese or understand what the english names of chinese dishes are, but can recognize pictures of dishes. read more

One thing I learned from watching the show "Friends" is that if you see a bunch of Chinese people at a Chinese restaurant then you know its going to be good. If you only KNEW how right Monica was. Came in one afternoon to catch their "tea time"specials. Every person in there was Asian, including myself. And I'm thinking, "Man, this is gonna be goooodd." And it was. Ordered their baked pork chop over spaghetti. Not on their "tea time" specials but just had to have it. It was SO good. A bit on the sweet side, which is how I always had my spaghetti growing up. So this plate totally hit home with me. Watch out for the bones in the pork chop. Salt and pepper tofu. Crispy with fried garlic. Perfect. Fried chicken wings. I have no idea what chicken they got the wings from but they were HUGE and oh so juicy. Seasonal greens with oyster sauce. I was thinking "maybe its gonna be like what my grandma made when I was growing up." And it was! Steamed mustard greens with oyster sauce. Another flashback for me. Loves it! Beef Congee. I love, love, love congee. With a little soy sauce, pepper, and garlic from the salt and pepper tofu. Drool... Also ordered, 2 milk teas. Eh... Our meal also came with tea which is highly caffeinated so be careful. Our total: $32.24 to feed 5 people. Not bad. I just wasn't a fan of the service. I convinced my Mom to go to this little joint down the street from my house as it's in walking distance and always filled with authentic looking Asians. Yes, that's right, authentic looking Asians. Real Asians, not those Americanized ones with spiked hair, an electronic device in each hand and their one man drum and bass project at home. It was busy and the hostess watched my Mom and I check out the menu before entering and being seated. The ambiance of Macau Cafe is your typical low end Asian cafe; pictures of food on the menu AND the wall, that delicious spicy chili oil on the table, and a busied and perpetually annoyed server who thinks you're stupid for ordering the Kung Pao chicken as if you're at fucking Panda Express. But whatever. This place is getting four stars for one simple reason: it's so. fucking. good. Everything was hot and fresh and FULL of all these layered Asian flavors that were so amazingly tasty I wanted to punch you in the face. We ordered two different chicken dishes, pot stickers and an order of egg rolls which, by the way, I don't even like, but I loooooved these. I don't know what they do. I think it's pieces of angel breasts inside them. I don't know anything about Honk Kong style Asian food and yes, she scoffed at my Mom when she asked for a fork, but fuck it man, their food is delicious. As this place is close to my house and SO much better than any place I've tried in Land Park I will surely return, even though we had to wait an obscene amount of time for our check and our server was less than attentive and seemingly annoyed at our apparent whiteness. Macau Cafe offers delicious Hong Kong style dishes. I enjoy going during their "tea time" (basically happy hour) in the afternoon when they offer deals on many of their drinks and appetizers. Their iced milk tea is delicious along with their salt/pepper tofu. The staff is nice but they do get a little overwhelmed when the restaurant is packed. I pretty much grew up eating here. This place is one of the better options to get Chinese food although it's more of a cafe-style (hence its name) than a restaurant. Service is average, standard at most authentic Chinese cuisines. Through the countless times that I've been here, I've narrowed it down to a few items that I order on a regular basis: fried oysters, curry brisket, wontons, lobster noodle, and their pan-fried crepe w/ cured meat. Their fried oysters are super crispy and delicious with the sweet and sour sauce! The curry brisket is a MUST TRY!! It's pretty good although it can get oily at times. The sauce is perfect with white rice, yuuum! This place wraps their own wontons and for what you pay for, the ingredients fill up the entire wrapping! A very food balance of shrimp and pork. The lobster noodle is just average, but the price of the lobster is really reasonable. Sometimes it's a hit or miss with the pan-fried crepe, but if you like Chinese sausage, it's worth a try! They also have brunch specials which sometimes I order the sausage and egg ramen. It's pretty decent and will fill you up for sure! If you're looking for drinks, I suggest trying their papaya milkshake or red bean milkshake, it's really refreshing! read more

Well I am unable to rate the food seeing that I was never served after being seated.... I came here after a day out with the fam and decided to try a new Chinese Restaurant. We have been all over Sacramento looking to satisfy that periodic Chinese food craving. We walked in on a Saturday at about 4pm and the place was relatively empty. There were about 10 people eating total, so the place wasn't packed. Once we walked in, we were not greeted but we were asked by a lady at the cash register whether we wanted to dine in or take it to go......we informed her that we wanted to dine in. Another lady came from behind the counter and asked us to follow her. After arriving to our table, I asked her for a high chair for my child and she gave us another table chair. Instead of making a deal about it, I simply got up and went to the front entrance where the high chairs were and grabbed the chair myself. After doing this, we sat and waited for about 20 minutes for our waitress to come take our order. To make matters worse, she wasn't busy helping other customers, she was actually prepping vacant tables with silverware and napkins. I made eye contact with her several times indicating that I was ready to order but she never came by.... Now someone may be thinking "why didn't you just get up from your table, walk over to the table she was preparing and tell her you are ready to order"? My reponse, "why should I, is this not a restaurant that works to serve people and receives it wages and tips not merely based on the quality of the food but also the quality of the service?" My husband and I visit this restaurant often and order take out often due to the lack of service and They do not attend to you they ignore you if you're non-Asian and don't give you good customer service but yesterday we decided to go eat there with our grown children. As we walked in we were ignored we waited to be seated we kept asking if we can sit by the window which they never decided to clean the table for us to sit so we then decided to set ourselves in the corner we were ignored finally they came and we ordered our food and she left never came back to ask us what we want to drink finally when I food came out which took about 20 minutes we asked for water and a drink then we waited for the last dish which never arrived after 30 minutes we were done eating and we told them where is our last dish and they kept saying it's coming we asked three different people and they all said it's coming finally we decide to leave and they charged us for that last dish we never ate so then I had to tell him to remove that last dish because we never ate that dish We usually don't get great service but yesterday was the worst we were ignored completely like we always do that's why we only do takeout so if you're not Asian only do takeout because you will be ignored as the service is lousy but the food is good read more

Can this restaurant mess up anything? Everything I order from here seems consistently delicious. My two must haves: -Wonton Noodle Soup: quite possibly the best wonton noodle soup in Sacramento. -Pork knuckle: really! Deliciously seasoned pork wrapped in crispy goodness. Also, your dog will love you for the giant bone included in this dish. Combine excellent food with a cleanly restaurant (unusual for many Asian restaurants), friendly servers (equally unusual), and you have a fantastic dining experience. Nothing here is amazing to where it stands out and I would want to come back. When I went here it was fairly empty but it got crowded around the end. I shared a won ton soup, dry beef chow fun, oyster pancake and salt and pepper calamari. Sadly the best item was probably the salt and pepper calamari because it is pretty hard to screw up deep fried food. The dry beef chow fun wasnt as dry as I expected and it was too moist for my liking. The oyster pancake was such a cop out, i couldnt really taste or see any of the oysters and it seemed more like an oyster and egg dish versus a pancake. The won ton soup was okay and the won tons were pretty good. I think this place is definitely on the pricier end for Chinese food and especially if it is mediocre Chinese food at best. Who we were: 4 ladies without their menfolks out on the prowl for good eats. What we got: -- Egg rolls with a thick sauce (look like lumpia. I found out recently that Lum Pia is a town in China famous for their skinny eggrolls and that in that town they use a word that means Fortunate Sandwich or something. But I digress.) --Pan fried turnip cake (yum, similar to dim sum places get it with the sauce.) --garlic fried spinach (hard to beat this one for zesty flavor and garlic breath. I ate the bulk, so good thing PF is night fishing.) --BBQ Pork and Salty Chicken over rice (this is a large platter and the chicken is not very salty. it's good though.) --Eggplant and tofu curry (quite yummy for an eggplant dish) --Beef chow fun (noodles were not fried dry in the sauce like I like them, but they were okay. The beef was really good, savory and thickly sliced.) it was a lot of food. We took it back to one of our houses and drank 4 bottles of wine and I finished off the pork. 41 bucks heartily fed 3 hungry ladies and tempted the one of us who was feeling under the weather. Fun menu items we did not get: ox tongue, frog, and some other goodies that I had a chuckle at and yet passed over because really, we are not the kind of gals who are into super exotic meats. I've never had a bad meal at Macau Cafe. Food is always good and service is OK. Its not too expensive either. I really like their Hot and Spicy Chicken Wings. Always steaming hot and juicy with nice crispy flavorful skin. They are jumbo sized wings too. Won Ton Soup is excellent!!! Nice plump won tons filled with pork and shrimp. Favorite dishes are Hot and Sour Soup, XO Green Beans with Pork, Deep Fried Pork Knuckle, Shanghai Dumplings, Pork and Chive Dumplings, Lobster Yi-Mein, and Pan Fried Udon Noodles. Shredded Chicken Salad and Congee (all) is also good. Service is OK. They are always busy when I go. They keep my teapot full and warm and water cup filled. Food comes out pretty quickly. Came here on my way back from Tahoe with a friend. I am Cantonese and have been to who knows how many different Cantonese restaurants... Besides my grandmas cooking, this is what I call comfort food. We ordered Lobster Noodle (Long Ha Yee Mein), a ginger scallion Chicken dish, and braised beef with Turnip. A few more I forgot. Nothing we got did not make my taste buds so happy The flavor was spot on and just absolutely delicious. Service was beyond what I expected, they were quick, happy and extremely attentive. One of the best Chinese restaurants in the Land Park area! I highly recommend it. Some of the favorites are: Pork Chop Curry, Egg and Shrimp chow fun, salt and pepper pumpkin shrimp, the general chicken and beef stew chow fun. The place is clean and friendly, very limited with English speaking but the workers are very nice. great place to bring friends and family who enjoy good and cultured Chinese food. Its a hole in the wall place, next to La Bou near the Sacramento Zoo, be careful on how to get to Macau because the intersection is a headache. Even though it's name Macau Cafe, it doesn't really serve anything Macau like. It's actually a Cha Chan Tang which is a cafe that serves inexpensive items popular with expats in Hong Kong. Anyway, this restaurant is part of the Wonderland (or was it Wondertaste) family of franchised restaurants so it has a certain level of expectations and quality surrounding it. The clay pot rice with sausages and pork was a solid thumbs up but it takes 30 minutes to make so please order that immediately when you walk in. The rice on the bottom of the pot is all crispy when you reach it which is the best part of the dish. The soy sauce on the side is meant to be poured over the entire pot. I prefer pouring only half of it since it would be too salty otherwise. Another item that was pretty good is the ox tongue curry with spaghetti. Now, this seems more of a italian dish since it's spaghetti but it seems asian with the ox tongue in it. Not bad if I say so myself. The fu jian rice was a little disappointing. There wasn't any taste to it. Felt bland. Don't forget to order a drink. The ying yang drink (basically milk tea and coffee) served hot will start they day right. read more

I had fried turnip cake with XO sauce, rice porridge with fish fillet, pan fried rice noddles and the egg custard for desert. The portion is right and price is reasonable. This was my very first time here. It was recommended to me by a co-worker who said it's pretty good and has a well rounded menu. What they didn't mention is they have quite a few HK style cafe items! My favorite being Baked Pork Chop on top of Spaghetti! So delicious!!! What makes it different is the sauce. It's still your typical tomato sauce, only sweeter, not tangy like the American style. This is one dish I always crave and wait till I'm in LA to eat just because it seems that no one makes it! On another note: LOBSTER YEE MEIN FOR $12.99!!!!! It's $4 cheaper than Fortune House!!! AND SOOO GOOD!!! Needless to say, as you can tell, I will definitely be going back. I noticed most of their items on the regular menu are $6.99. Good Food. Terrible Service. We went here for dinner on 2/19/12 and we were quickly seated. We decided on what to order and then waited, waited, and waited. A waitress finally came over after we flagged her down. We ordered 4 dishes, 3 of them came out really quick. The 4th dish never came. After we told 2 different waitresses that we were still missing a dish, they still took their time telling the kitchen they had forgot a dish. Finally, they came out with a 4th dish. But, it was wrong and it was a dish we had already received. So we waited some more. During this time, we noticed that another table was also waiting a long time for their food and the two women there were not Asian. A waitress then took a dish to their table. It was the mistake dish they just tried to serve to us! The waitress tried to pass off that mistake dish as something the women at that table had ordered! Nice try, but the woman insisted that the dish was not what she had ordered. We finally got our 4th dish, but by that time, we were done eating. You will like this place if you like to have food with distinct, strong flavors. I find that the food here tastes like they have dedicated cookware for fish, chicken, beef, soup, and so on. Things don't taste like everything was cooked with the same pan like so many places. I've come here multiple times in the last 4 years. The food is always fantastic. It's important that you know what you're ordering here - stick to things that you are familiar with... the flavors are strong here so if you order something and you don't like it there is someone else that probably comes there specifically for that dish - you've been warned. The service has always been kind of lousy in past years but the last 3 times I've been here it's been really great. But the biggest disappointment fell on my face when my wonton noodle soup came with the yellow egg noodles, which I dislike the most. Definitely give this place a shot, but come with friends or family. It has a super family dinner atmosphere to it and it gets packed here. The menu has a million and one different choices. It's really overwhelming. There were actually 2 menus. A lot of it is traditional Chinese dishes mixed with americanized dishes (deep fried sweet meats!). This place offers many Chinese dishes, but the flavor isn't quite there. There is a huge parking lot outside and the restaurant has plenty of seating. It took a while for the servers to come take our order, but once the orders are in, the food comes out relatively quickly. We ordered the salty chicken with rice, tofu and beef dish, and preserved egg porridge. The salty chicken was delicious, but the portion was a little small. It comes with a ginger scallion sauce that really completes the dish. However, the dish was mostly rice and lightly sauteed veggies. The beef dish featured tender meat and yummy tofu, but the flavor was a bit bland. The porridge was bland and I've definitely had better. I work pretty close to this restaurant and I love going to there for lunch. I would say once a week the least to 3 times a week. What brings me there is the lunch special which only offers Monday to Friday 11AM-2PM for $5.95 (Dishes vary each day). Great portion for lunch and it comes with coffee, milk tea, or lemon tea. Nowhere else in Sacramento can you find an authentic Hong Kong style milk tea (Strong tea flavor, silky and smooth :) recommend hot than iced) I used to go to Yummy Juice or Happy Valley for lunch. Although they also offer the same lunch special, the taste is incomparable and great. It is classic in its flavor and quality. They don't have many tables for large group of people as the wait may take up to half hour to an hour. I get overwhelmed with too many choices on the menu, but pictures help me to determine if I want to eat it or not. And they have tons of pics showing on the wall. The food here is authentic and we love to order the basic American fan fare favorites like general chicken, chicken with asparagus, chow mein pan fried with shrimp, pot stickers, and fried chicken wings. Some of the dishes that I really like are: Pan fried lotus root cakes - minced pork, lotus root, and some other minced ingredients that fry up really nice and tasty Oxtail stew - not too many places serve this, the portion is on the small side here, but the flavor is good Stir fried yam greens - less mushy compared to spinach Udon noodle stir fry - thick chewy noodles stir fried with seafood Hong Kong style pork spare ribs - deep fried meat coated with sweat and sour sauce, this is good comfort food Steamed oysters with black bean sauce - comes with six oysters and some of them are really large and the sauce is good with rice The lunch menu looks good and inexpensive. Not sure why people don't rate this place higher. Yummy food and hot milk tea. Also they have lunner specials between 2:30-5:30 pm.
