Dont judge a book by its cover, but in this case, it's probably a safe bet. MAD MACKS has a rough parking lot and a dilapidated exterior. Once inside it's more of the same. Theres no entryway. The door just opens into the dining room. Signs tell you not to sit until you order. Steam and heat roll over the counter from the kitchen. Patrons must wait in queue as the lone cashier directs action and actually functions also as a host and waiter. The frankenbuilding has a bright front room and a dark backroom. Seems like this place would be comfortable on a slow winter day. You'd be well-advised to avoid the opposite. Oh and the food: Its burgers. Plain burgers, cheese burgers, etc, they're decent, but eh, decent is a fairly low bar. There are burgers on lots of menus, Mack's are kinda like those. They got fries too. read more

Was visiting San Jose Mission and we were hungry for burgers. We asked some locals and they recommended this place and gave us directions. What a cute place. Yes, when you drive up it looks like a hole in the wall, but boy was it worth the stop. I haven't had a good old fashioned hamburger like those they serve in ages! The decor is old and the place is small, but the place is clean and I felt like this place really was a flashback to 50's. Great service and excellent pricing. Saw lots of families there and the owner was visiting with everyone. I finally made it here when they were open.lunch rush here is crazy ,food comes out fresh made to order "dinosaur burgers ".fries and onion rings are also made fresh hand battered .our table was 3 guest took around 15 mins to get the food delivered to our table .well worth the wait . But lately the last two trips, the place smells like old grease, or not clean floors? It just does not smell clean like before. Some areas need dusting or wiping down, a refresh is needed. What a nice surprise to find this gem in San Antonio. I found this place. like I find most places (wink) through Yelp. Lol It had a high rating and it was current so I took a chance and found my way to Mad Mack's front door. The parking was a bit of a hassle since it is a semi dirt parking lot in front of the establishment and the lot was full. ;) another good sign that the place would be worth my while. I ordered a double with cheese and jalapeños, with a side order of chili fries. initially, I didn't ask for a drink but the cashier was insistent but since there wasn't any beer on the menu and it was mid-day I asked for a glass of water. I found a table and sat down patiently waiting for my food which was announced by the same cashier over the PA system, which wasn't necessary since the place isn't bigger than a double-wide trailer. The burger was huge and piping hot! The patties are smashed which, if done correctly, has a boatload of caramelization. Aaaaaand they did it well. The burger was loaded with flavor and freshness. The chili fries were just "Ok", I've had better. I was disappointed that the burger was a little dry but I'll come back, and bring my family. read more

The owner (I think) was who took my order and brought it to me curbside because the dining room is closed. She was friendly and efficient on the phone taking my order, and she was helpful and friendly when she brought my order our. The burger was 1/4 the size of my car's steering wheel and could have fed a family of 3. Seriously, it was huge. Every ingredient was fresh and tasty. The egg was perfectly fried, but I should've looked to see where the yolk was so when I squeezed the burger it would've run into the burger instead of into the wrapper. Once you order, the cashier tells you which numbered table to sit at so they get your order to you and not wonder around calling names. The food was fresh off the grill and sooooooo good. Everything you could possibly want in a burger. I have had the all American cheeseburger, but my favorite is the Hickory Bacon Burger. It has an onion ring and delicious tangy bbq sauce on top. Had the bacon bleu burger with a side of onion rings and an ice tea. It was one of their lunch combos. If you like bacon and LOVE bleu cheese, then this is the burger for you! The thin patty on its own is very tasty. Flat top grilled and not fatty or greasy at all. The onion rings were golden and crispy. You can tell they are hand made, nothing frozen here! With fantastic flattop-grilled burgers and solid fries, there is only one thing at this place that I want to talk about: The Mad Mack ($9.49). As a namesake burger should, this burger stands out from every other in San Antonio. And, it is a lot to finish. That guilt I mentioned comes from the overwhelming amount of fatty goodness in this burger. if you have a weak heart, you may want to skip it. Otherwise, buckle up. It has double meat and cheese, bacon, two onion rings, and Mad Mack sauce (a sort-of house-made thousand island). Oh, and it doesn't have buns. Instead, it is sandwiched between two grilled cheese sandwiches, admittedly, some of the best I've ever had. And, in spite of its heft, every part of this burger is done superbly well. This is a burger for people who want more no matter how much they get, and it satisfies, albeit in a guilty-pleasure kind of way. I can highly recommend this place a cheat-day destination.
