Did not share pricing during multiple calls before service call, did not explain payment options, did not fix issue. After 30 minutes of four guys standing around watching one try to fix a sink, they revealed that I'd need to pay $300 check or cash and told me it was a 3% service charge to do it by card online. After the surprise rate, for a drain that remains clogged and a mess in the bathroom, I was also charged a surprise $25 dollar service charge for doing an ACH online. This isn't the standard experience with plumbers, these guys are not fair dealers. read more

We have a 100 year old home in the suburbs - our sewer started to back up a couple weeks ago when we did laundry, so we had another firm come and rot out our sewer line for general maintenance. As they cleared, they hit a blockage about 75 yards into the lawn and couldn't go further, and so they left having completed their rotting job. Next day we did laundry and water came immediately up through the floor tile - so we knew something had happened. I immediately moved to get three quotes like I do for all large projects - but then remembered a firm I used in the city when I was younger - Madden. They had always helped me with my garden unit that had an overhead line during the years of massive rains, and they were always reliable and reasonable. Thankfully, they had grown and extended their service area into our suburb since those days. Madden got us a competitive quote on an expedited basis, and we moved forward. As soon as the contract was signed Madden had permits underway and requested the utilities be marked. At this time, we had not showered in 2 days, no laundry, and used the washroom sparingly - it was like camping...in the worst campground of all time. Thankfully the permits cleared after we harassed our village over and over, and with Madden's held got the utilities marked on an emergency basis. They got everything done as quickly as possible given dependency on other parties.. When the work started....my gosh....i had no idea people could work so hard. in 4 hours the techs had hand dug a 10 foot by 8 foot discovery pit where the blockage was detected. The next day all of the broken pipe was cleared and replaced. There was some internal work on the main stack where water was coming up through the floor at the point of connection - the tech's hammered through and found another broken pipe from the sewer stack, so that was replaced with new PVC. We've been up and running this week - no issues with anything sewer related after multiple rounds of laundry and standard family usage. Of all the home issues once can have, sewer utility is the worst to wrestle with. I'm glad to have found Madden again, thankful that they gave me a competitive quote when we were in a dire situation, and would always recommend them to anyone in an emergency. read more

They just came, showed everything inside my pipes on the camera and FIXED the sewage after another company failed to fix. They charge very reasonable fees. Issue: Basement floor drain backup when running washing machine. My appointment was set up a few days after I called. The team arrived on time. The technician, Austin, was personable and professional. He diagnosed the problem quickly. He rodded the cleanout sewer line, pulled out a small amount of tree roots and cleared the clog in about 20 minutes. Cost: $475 (I would not describe the cost for a job of this size as affordable or reasonable.) Warranty: 60 days I thought the great reviews for Madden came from Next Door. I only mention that because I'd be more inclined to rely on what neighbors say about their experiences with service providers. For that reason, and because I was in too much of a hurry to get the clog cleared is why I did not do my normal due diligence and get estimates from other businesses. Was so impressed with its work that I decided to give them a call regarding a seepage problem with my property. An estimate was made and the work was eventually completed in a timely fashion. They did not do what I asked, to rod all lines. The tech said there was 'no point', because my main line needs work and it wouldn't go anywhere. I acquiesced... but only to my demise... when days after sewage started coming up into my dishwasher flooding it and having it ruin my hardwood floors and leak down to the basement. The tech lied and said he rodded the main and toilet stack but did not. They still charged me for that and after I called them out on charging me for services not performed, they didn't believe me ask said they have to check with the tech who lied about it in the 1st place. I was referred to Madden by another contractor that I have used for 25 years. I was told he was an honest contractor. I had a big problem with water everywhere in a tenant's apartment from a leaking water service line under the basement floor. Madden gave me fast high quality service and with a reasonable quote. Been using Madden for years. They aren't the cheapest but they come out and fix clogged pipes as scheduled. Then one day the main guy had to look into the catch basin and he tells me it needs to be rebuilt, which it did, bricks falling off of it and everything. A call is given to them for an estimate. Instead of giving an estimate I get a call that they are on their way to do the work. No, they are told. Right now we just want an estimate. So they fax over a written estimate. $6,000 to rebuild the bricks in the catch basin, rod out to the street, replace the collapsed pipe from the basement to the catch basin involving digging up some sidewalk, and divert the sink line into the catch basin to stop the water from seeping up through the cracks in the basement floor. It wasn't an emergency, so about a year went by until we said okay, we have the time and money now to do it, come out and do it. They demanded half up front. $3000. Which they were given. But apparently over the course of that year they forgot what the job entailed. They come out, don't rebuild the catch basin but merely do a cosmetic deal on it by just coating it with cement (who cares what it looks like, it's a pit covered by a manhole cover), they replace only four foot of pipe (how does that help when the rest of the pipe going from the basement to the catch basin is collapsed), and don't do anything AT ALL with the sink line as the original proposal stated, and then do a sloppy job replacing the cement in the basement that they sledgehammered out leaving an ugly, bumpy lump in the middle of the room. At the end of the job, which only took two and a half days, I told the guy we weren't happy and he needed to call my partner or else he wasn't going to get paid, but he refused to call her, even laughed about it and made a snide comment to me about my partner being my "boss". What they did wasn't even worth the $3000 paid up front (as a matter of fact, I don't even understand what the point of what they did was--no problem was solved by the work they did), so obviously we weren't going to pay ANOTHER $3000, but they insisted we owed them. Never sent anyone over to talk to us, to inspect the job, to find out what the problem was, just insisted we needed to pay them. Very sad that we don't use Madden anymore after all these literally decades of using them, but how can you use someone again after they try to rip you off like that? My suggestion is trust them for a simple rodding but for nothing major. read more
