Summary: food and portions were very good but I have to take off at least one star for other reasons. We ordered paneer tikka paratha tacos and chicken tikka paratha tacos and a mango lassi. We sat down near the cart so the person should be able to see we are just there, hungry, waiting for our food. We waited over 30 minutes for a very, very simple order. Especially since I saw him scoop out tikka masala sauce so I know the parathas and sauces, and lassis are all premade. We were hangry by the time we got it so that was annoying. But what was a lot more annoying than that was that the owner of the food truck handed the food to us without wearing a mask or gloves. And he didnt wear a mask the whole time he was cooking. Great little Indian Food Trailer, friendly guy running it from southern India. If you've wanted to try Indian food, it's right past the Dam on 620 where the defunked live bait and gas station is, before you get to Steiner if heading east. Having lived in India for a year and liking the cuisine, it's nice to have a place in the area that serves authentic Indian. The Chai is also good. Laccha paratha was soooo bad it seemed like they just reheated a frozen one from the store. Mango yogurts was so disgusting it seemed like I was biting into sponge. Consistently excellent Indian food. Samosas, garlic naan, saag paneer, chicken 65, and channa masala are among the best I've had anywhere. Portion sizes are generous and priced very reasonably. Ask which entrees are served with rice so you know how much extra naan/rice to add on. My only complaint is that they abandoned us over on 620!! So my usual spot for Indian tacos was closed, and I really had been craving some so I ventured out of my comfort zone and fell upon Madras Dhaba! I left with my tummy feeling just as happy and satisfied so no complaints here. The tacos are full of flavor and spice. My parents got the Chicken 65 and the lamb ones and liked them both. The lamb was so tender and not chewy like you sometimes find. They said the Chicken 65 was really spicy (yet good) so if spice is your thing, then I say go for it. I stuck with my usual....chicken Tikka and it was just as delicious as I expected! Great atmosphere in the food truck park, and good location. I hate to say this but I don't know what the standards are if this is a 4.5/5. But in my experience the Prata was good and so was the samosa but these are easier items. The lamb curry was very average and I ended up throwing most of it away--it had no taste or spice. People have stated there is dosa and there is not. For having Madras in the title it should have dosas and something called poori, too. Another thing in Texas that would so well is "Mysore Dosa" but anyways I wasn't impressed. //Update June 2019 - CLOSED, TRAILER IS GONE. I'm going to miss them. This was my favorite neighborhood takeout place.// I picked up lunch there today and enjoyed it. The dosa was about 18 inches wide! (Masala dosa is a sort of crepe filled with mildly spiced potatoes.) I'm used to the little frozen ones from Asian grocery stores that are the size of a taco. :-) The green coconut chutney sauce was so watery that the end of my giant floppy dosa crepe tipped it over the flimsy plastic cup and I spilled most of it. (I confess, I was eating standing at my kitchen counter. But the dosa didn't fit any of my dinner plates anyway.) Mango lassi, ras malai, rice pilaf, paneer tikka masala - all good. One of my best Yelp finds ever! I didn't realize that it was a food truck but to me that makes me respect the food since its harder to pull off than in a traditional kitchen. Super stoked that we have a good, local spot for Indian food. Welcome, Madras Dhaba! I threw a dart at the menu online because I didn't recognize the dishes from what I've been used to in the past (it's been a couple years since I've found a regular Indian food place, and that was out of town). Made my order for take-out and they promptly called me on my way there to inform me that they were out of one of my original selections. Note: a bit of a language/accent barrier which leaves a native English-speaking customer wondering if their communication was received. You'll get by. Tasty lentil soup...Dal Fry; really good, not overly spiced, but had nice hints of flavors, though the 12 oz. portion was small for take-out, I felt). Also had spicy Spinach Chicken (same 12 oz. portion size--just enough for one person, really a bit small if you are hungry). Perfect rice pilaf (16 oz., per entree). Friendly, welcoming hosts. In all, the dishes satisfied our anticipation for (really) good Indian food, but the portions are small. No, it's not a belly-full of Indian buffet where the food is okay and you're expecting quantity. This place was SO GOOD. I'm Indian and have had amazing Indian food, so I'm always on the search for another good Indian place, but Austin has been just okay so far. No longer the case. I ordered their "Indian Tacos" which were huge and are more like Kathi Rolls than tacos. I couldn't decide which ones to get, so I ordered all three of the options available on DoorDash (didn't realize they have 5 options!) and it's what I ate all weekend with no complaints. I wish they had a sampler platter of 3 so I could have just ordered that! My personal fave was the Paneer, followed by the Channa Masala and the Chicken Tikka. Was visiting Austin and stumbled upon this place (after having tacos and not being satisfied). I ordered the chicken korma and it was fantastic. The creamy coconut sauce and well balanced spices really hit the spot. I should've just saved my $40 from the taco joint and come straight here. The food truck itself is good, but the prices are NUTS! That's what I'd tell those picking up from Madras Dhaba. We paid $8.99 for what was a very small order of dal fry...it was fine, but seriously, almost 10 bucks for a dish that costs probably 50 cents to make?! You're better off learning how to make one yourself. I'd argue the only reasonably priced item on the menu is the samosas. I'd go back, but only if the portions substantially increased or they changed their prices to something more realistic. My husband (who is Indian and very picky with his favorite dishes) and I are always willing to spend money on good Indian food when it seems worth the cost. 5 stars for trailer food and 5 stars for such thoughtful and courteous service! The owner is humble and generous. He keeps up with the indian culture of offering free water bottle to begin with to guests. Service was flawless! Food is fresh, home made quality, well cooked with delicious flavors. Decided to give this place a try after reading about it on Nextdoor. We ordered chicken Tikka Masala... it was fantastic! We will definitely be back to try more. The owner came out and met us and gave our dog a treat; very friendly people. They are looking into delivery options with Uber Eats. The wait was a little long (25 minutes) so next time we will call our order in. We made it work with a quick walk over to the gas station for a bottle of wine. read more
